For those keeping score at home Lip Man is a BR alum as well.

  • To be fair their starting QB was out with injury, illness or something. I conveniently left that out, lol. Carmel looked like they had good pieces, it was one of those games that just went Rice's way

Brother Rice should be good. I coach at Lockport. We are at DGN tonight.

I've been covering prep sports around Chicago for about 10 years and decided to try and get a podcast rolling as prep coverage diminishes.

Good luck man. As someone who has been on that end of HS sports for a long time now, I love it. Hope it goes well for you.

Thanks. I have a pretty good Rolodex of writers and connections I've made so figured I'd give it a shot.

I broadcast HS games (basketball and football mostly) for about 10 years on and off. I actually just started working as my hometowns Sports Information Director and Webmaster, so trust me I know how hard it is to find good HS sports talk.

Coverage is diminishing in Chicago. Both the trib and suntimes are now bare bones with little to no freelancers.

Daily Herald is probably best for coverage now. Kind of sad

OK, will Br Rice beat Marist Sunday? What's the verdict. I see St. Laurence won its opener at Benet and scored a lot of points. Is Laurence for real or is Laurence Loyola Light with the spread in its infancy there? Is Rice's defense any better this year?

laurence is a nice 4a/5a team they play rita week 4

if rice doesn't get out coached again this year they should be fine. they'll never get past semis in 8a

It's strange. If Rice loses to Marist, isn't Crete pretty powerful? That could be an 0-2 hole hard to climb out of.

I think the next step is Suntimes and Tribune becoming 1 paper. Nothing to back that up. Just an opinion.

Agree, very sad. I loved the high school coverage in the Sun Times in the mid-80s into the 90s. They covered Cathilic league, city, and suburban pretty well. Scores and features. It's too bad that that's gone away.

Almost all sports coverage just stinks now.

I'll give the podcast a listen. Good luck with it.

Lincoln Way East seems like a team to beat with the schools combining.

Roster over 100

Pardon my Brother Rice homerism ...

I watched the replay Sunday night not knowing the score. Rice won, 31-7 over Marist. I thought the defense was surprisingly good and the story of the evening. Marist had no chance running the ball, except when its QB, a former Rice player, ran the ball. However, he had no chance of breaking one. He would get a few positive yards though.

Next, unfortunately I was not impressed with Rice's QB. First year he's starting. I thought he did OK. His best throw was a deep pass up the middle for a TD in which he stood in the pocket and got drilled. He made some very poor decisions and a strong opponent would have picked a few of them off. Marist may ultimately be good, right now they are not a good team IMO.

Smalling looked very good as advertised. They are gonna have to get him the ball. I'm not trying to be a dick. These are just high school kids and I am proud of the easy victory over a rival.

My hope is the QB improves (hell it was the season opener) and the running back who broke a long one is the real deal along with Smalling.

I'll give Bro Rice an A for the opening victory. Marist gets a C (no apparent stud playmakers; suspect defense). Rice BTW appears to have an excellent placekicker.

The best two QB's at rice and Marist are sophomores. Marist soph will probably start next game or after Simeon.

Rice could be great but it will come down to coaching while fails them often.

Best talent in Illinois is at east st Louis with good coaching they could win 8A.

That's very interesting about the sophomore QBs at both schools. I wonder if they'll move Marist QB to RB if another kid takes over soon. I do get worried cause you've mentioned Rice's poor coaching before. Do you know if Rice switched anything on defense this year re. coaching? That defense looked pretty good. Marist couldn't do squat. Any reason Rice's defense would be improved? I did notice they had a pretty big kid playing defensive line or LB. Looked like a good player.

And please keep the Sun times format so I can read the paper without taking it apart.

Their staff is young so hopefully they are learning. Sunday was much better, over time they should be a strong point for the team.

The OC and DC are both new so we'll see.

The defensive line for Rice should be a strong point for them. That D Lineman is really good as is a LB and safety. Just not sure what the O line will bring. If they protect the QB they will be dangerous but O line play has hurt on a consistent basis over the years.

You going to any games this year Harry? I keep telling myself I have to come in for a game some day. I'd love to check out a game at Rice's field.

Since 2002 has Lincoln-Way Central ever beaten Lincoln-Way East? I think the answer is no.

Was at Marist game at soldier field tailgate was very cool. Will probably hit a couple more.

Their problem is they are not good enough to compete in 8A especially after a loss or two in the regular season.
