  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 10:40 PM) For those of you who voted for him, how do you not constantly cringe whenever he speaks or tweets? I voted for GWB in 2000 because I was not interested in politics back then and chose him because my dad was a republican. As I started paying attention, I would often cringe and feel embarrassed that I voted for such a buffoon. I would hope that Trump supporters are equally, if not more, embarrassed. I just re-read this post. I had to smile at the word "buffoon." He was a buffoon. You know, I have to come to the realization I'm not a Republican anymore. Even though I technically am one, I haven't voted for any Republicans in a fricking long time. I wonder what the hell I am? I certainly ain't no democrat. But I never vote for my Repubs so what the hell am I? I despised Hillary so badly I am not near a Democrat, though I do worship Bernie so to speak. As far as voting for Trump, I wouldn't have voted for him if you threatened me with immediate death. Ditto Hillary.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 11:02 PM) Raised catholic but the wife and I are atheists. We still do the secular holiday stuff like Christmas trees and presents and Easter egg hunts with our little one. Cool; thanx for sharing. Little kids love those hunts IMO. QUOTE (juddling @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 11:31 PM) We go to the inlaws every Easter. When their grandkids were younger there was Easter baskets and egg hunts ..Now just a nice dinner and cards/games afterwards. Nice. I remember when I was little my grandparents died for a game of Pinochle. Unfortunately I never took to the game very well but they always got a good game going.
  3. Hey, I declined my family's offer to return to Chicago for Easter this year mainly because my sister has lost it at least temporarily and screams at relatives left and right and I didn't want to deal with it. But it got me to wondering. How many of you do Easter on Sunday? Go to relatives' houses or restaurants, etc? How many go to church, Mass or otherwise? Or do you ignore this one 'holiday?' I ask because my mom considers it a real holiday and is somewhat mad I am not returning to my beloved hometown for the big brunch. So do you do Easter or not? Do you dread it or love it? I will go to Mass tonight at 7:30 and again Easter Vigil on Sat night. I do enjoy the religious holiday but I like to keep it in my own way and not get yelled at by a troubled relative. Bless her, though. Hope she turns it around.
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 10:02 PM) There are at least a handful. I'm guessing alphadog, rabbit, and jenksismyhero among others. Could be wrong though. Maybe but I don't know how anybody could put a check next to the name of one-percenter, hotel magnate Trump. Those I like more than Donald: Bernie, Jesse Ventura, Biden, Kasich.
  5. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 08:37 PM) I know Greg bothers some people, but his obtuseness continually entertains me. I'd love to think this is some character he is playing for the internets, but, nope, I think he really thinks it - types it. Thank you. I appreciate kind words for a change. Truly thanx. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 09:40 PM) For those of you who voted for him, how do you not constantly cringe whenever he speaks or tweets? For the love of gosh, nobody on this board voted for Trump. We're pretty sure of that. BTW, if anybody's in the neighborhood, right now I'm sitting in Panera in Lawrence, Ks. Come on over and have some salad.
  6. Read an article somewhere yesterday that said Bernie definitely would have defeated Trump. It said the voters that put Trump ahead would have never gone Republican if Bernie had been the candidate. Wish I could provide the link, but I read it.
  7. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 06:39 PM) He blasted Obama as much as he could for his "vacation" usage. Then he should get roasted for all the golf on a regular basis. Some of the reporters at the briefings should do what's right and ask about all the golf. I'm a little surprised at the outrage, though. Didn't Americans who voted for Trump realize we elected a 1 percenter? He's rich and entitled, folks.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 07:34 PM) Do you know anything about golf? You don't carve out 30 minutes out of your day to golf. It takes up a huge chunk of your day. As taxpayers, we literally pay money out of our paychecks to go towards his salary. I'd prefer he actually work for my hard-earned money....you know, money I earn from actually working and not playing golf. Life isn't fair. He's a 1 percenter. They get to golf and work at the same time. Sad but true. Obviously Trump is never going to change so why get worked up about it? I'd think he's well plugged in to the issues of the day. He's not going to suddenly sit in the office 7 days a week working. I'm not a big Trump fan. Once he commits an impeachable offense, I'd assume we'll be rid of him.
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 07:06 PM) What? This is an extremely bizarre thing to say. Why should anyone have that point of view? Do you think his job is not very important? If he really wanted to spend so much time golfing, why did he run for President? Why didn't he just retire or keep doing whatever he was doing before he got into politics? He is literally putting people's lives in danger with the decisions he makes as President. Would be nice to actually see him work hard. Strange that you have this viewpoint. It seems like you don't think being President is all that important if you're ok with them playing golf so much. Why were you so against Hillary being elected if this job seems so trivial to you? I'm just saying he's 70 and doesn't figure to live but 10 more years if the odds are correct. Let him golf. Lots of people golf and work at the same time. I said, if he said during the campaign he'd never golf or rarely golf, then call him on it at every news conference. Otherwise let him golf. I feel like Trump has been working a lot. I don't see the golf as being a big deal unless he has broken a campaign promise to take rare vacations. If he has, shame on him for lying. Sick of that.
  10. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Apr 13, 2017 -> 10:30 PM) Why buy toys if you can't take them out of the box and play with them? I wonder how many MOAB's there are in existence? We may need some for North Korea if they do what they are threatening to do.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 01:48 PM) Trump taking another long weekend to go golfing in Florida. 22 of 84 days of his presidency has been spent at Mar-a-lago. That doesn't account for the couple days he spent at his other golf course, doing nothing Edit he's going there with zero senior staff too https://twitter.com/JenniferJJacobs/status/...624467469664256 The guy is 70 years old. Chances are good he'll die within the next 10 years because of law of averages. Let the guy golf while he can. My only addendum to this statement is if he indeed campaigned on never taking time off. If he did that (prove it to me) then he should be called on that at every news conference. But aside from that, let the man golf. p.s. It would be nice if he paid for his own travel, but isn't it law he HAS to take Air Force One everywhere and travel with SS agents everywhere? Good thing he owns the golf courses. I bet the guys in charge hate having to give free carts to all the SS agents. I wonder if the agents bring clubs and pretend they are golfers.
  12. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 04:36 PM) W. Garcia LF L. Garcia CF A. Garcia RF Has Avi been team MVP so far in 2017? 1.) Avi. 2.) Robertson. 3.) Davidson.
  13. Google the attorney's name and watch today's news conference. It was awesome. Love that attorney. He even invoked Steve Martin in Planes Trains And Automobiles. I kid you not. I LOVE that attorney. Damn he was cool. Reminded me of Ray Meyer meets Mayor Daley.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 06:27 AM) http://news.nationalpost.com/life/everythi...ennial-monsters This article blames the majority of problems for Millenials largely on the Baby Boomers (those 53-71 years old today). Greg, a response??? Hi Caulfield, Yes Boomers are despicable. I'm not joking. Yes Boomers have totally ruined it all. What happened is many of us had rich parents and we resented them for being distant parents. Yes Boomers are the last generation where dads NEVER went to their sons' little league games or grade school games or high school games. Boomers' dads on the south side went to the BARS after work and got s***faced drunk. Most of the dads on the south side never played catch with their kids even. They were the bad guys in the house, the disciplinarians and you never got anything from your dad but threats. Moms were not nearly as paranoid if that's the right word as they are now. They'd set you free to walk to school or walk the streets of Chicago with your friends after school and all day and night in the summer and only tell you to come home and eat. No keeping track of where you were AT ALL. Now for some reason, Boomers decided to raise their kids TOTALLY hands on. Involved in every aspect of kiddies' lives and didn't parent them but buddied them up. Yes, Boomers are the scourge. Boomers are very very bad. HOWEVER, the ensuing generations have even been worse about coddling their kids, etc. So whereas the Boomers started this, my gosh, have you seen 30 something parents in action? They have no clue and their kids are running the house hold. As far as Boomers being stuck with their grown up kids, good for them. They get what they deserve, what they asked for, dependent kids. Most Boomers got kicked out of their houses after college. Daddy told me, OUT! You will get a job and you will work and you are off my insurance NOW. Come see me when you are a responsible adult and we'll go golfing or have a beer. Until that day, get out of my sight. But these same Boomers will let em live in the basement and give them participation trophies while secretly worrying that their kids may never get a good job. So yes Caulfield, Boomers started this mess and are the cause of this mess. But the ensuing generations, whatever we are calling them, are actually worse. Way worse.
  15. You guys that moan about Hawk and Benetti should listen to these unlistenable Royals announcers. All they do is talk about upcoming games at home trying to sell a handful of tickets, talk about how great this team is, throw in dumb references to the parade they had when they won it all. At least the Sox announcers aren't part of one 9 inning commercial for the team. Denny Matthews is good but he's helpless. For an entire half inning he has to listen to some horrid announcer read scores for the Sonic MLB scoreboard or something dumb like that. Horrible listening. Pathetic homers.
  16. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 13, 2017 -> 06:06 PM) One of my buddies, who is pilot for an airline out of O'Hare, was on Facebook defending United so I was able to see a pretty good argument. They do have the right to remove you from a plane for any reason. Just really unfortunate he didn't cooperate and that it all ended up on video. Edit: and seriously, they were being well compensated to give up their seats. Your buddy, with all due respect, should shut up on this. There's simply no excuse to drag the guy off the plane. How bout all the LONG delays caused by the airlines. You sit and sit while they fix a light bulb, fill out the paperwork after fixing the light bulb, etc. We wait it out. They needed to wait it out, period, and not drag the guy off the plane. I was reading that some high school teacher pulled his students off the plane cause they were getting traumatized. So what if it's legal to bump a passenger? That really has nothing to do with dragging a guy off and beating the hell out of him. And well compensated to give up seats? Cmon. They didn't come close to offering enough $$. Your friend's premise sounds like, "It's legal to bump you at any time. The guy got what he deserved." No he didn't. It never has to escalate to busting a guy's face when he's 69 years old and has no gun.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 13, 2017 -> 06:49 PM) I'll guess more since his teeth were knocked out, he was concussed, requires reconstructive surgery and was publically humiliated. They should ask for 200 million because if it goes to trial, a jury would probably award him even more. Maybe he'll break United. I was thinking that whoever broke his nose and knocked out his teeth should probably face serious criminal charges as well as a civil lawsuit. Granted he refused to leave at one point but to physically send him to the hospital should be a serious crime not against only United but the f***tard who beat the s*** out of Dao.
  18. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 10:57 PM) if you would have actually read what i typed you would have seen that I did say I would have raised a stink, but would have started moving once the police showed up. Didn't say i would be happy about it. But no, keep living in your own world, seeing and reading what you want. I'm trying to imagine this happening to me. If one of the flight attendants or United bigwigs came to my seat and told me I must leave because I've been bumped, I think I would say, "Are you serious?" one time. Then the way my brain works, I'd think, "Dammit I knew I shouldn't have taken United. This bulls*** happens 50 percent of the time when I fly anything besides Southwest." Then after walking off the plane I'd see what they were going to do for me to reaccommodate me and plan my next steps. But, yeah, I'd get off the plane (I might make some snide comments along the way or say something to fellow passengers as I was getting off the plane). Why? There's no good reason to fight them on this. They said get off, I better get off and re-assess from there. I see the attorney and Dao's daughter had a news conference today. I wonder how much they'll receive in settlement money from United over this. Probably just a couple million? 1-2 mill plus medical costs paid for?
  19. OK your question was: "So if you are out to dinner, and someone sucker punches you and the video goes viral, you think it is fair game that your possible criminal history gets thrown out there for all to see? Even though it is completely unrelated and establishes nothing?" --I don't think it's really fair but at the same time I think it's where we are. Like somebody said, the guy with the sweater at the debate had his past looked up as well. This case is kind of weird to discuss. Cause this Dr. Dao is well known in Louisville I guess because of his sordid case 15 long years ago. So the fact it was him is probably legit news in LOUISVILLE right? But if Louisville reports it everybody picks up on it.
  20. How has Nate avoided arm injury with that ridiculous pitching motion?
  21. Serious question: Are the Sox trying to lose this game? Nate blows and it was a nice 2-0 competitive game. Now we tank for draft position? Seems fishy.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 07:59 PM) So if you are out to dinner, and someone sucker punches you and the video goes viral, you think it is fair game that your possible criminal history gets thrown out there for all to see? Even though it is completely unrelated and establishes nothing? I said I had no forceful opinion on the subject either way. Why do u hate me so? I wondered everybody's take on this.
  23. Very interesting piece here on whether the past of David Deo (United passenger injured when getting dragged off flight) should have been dredged up by media outlets as part of this story. What do you folks think? Should the fact Dr. Deo 13 years ago got in SERIOUS trouble with the law been a part of this story or not? I have mixed emotions. It seems to me it is pertinent for folks to wonder a bit about the victim of this atrocity, hence fair game to write about who Dr. Deo is and what happened in his past. I enjoyed reading this item, however. It's not too often newspaper people take the type of position this author did. I have no forceful opinion on this either way. http://www.freep.com/story/opinion/columni...tion/100334210/
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 02:35 PM) What the hell are you talking about? We're having a discussion on a baseball message board, not organizing a million man march. This is one of the best posts in soxtalk history. Succinct, funny and downright brilliant. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 03:19 PM) Elsewhere, the doctor at the centre of the viral incident onboard the flight in Chicago has spoken out for the first time. His lawyers, Stephen L Golan of Golan Christie Taglia, and Thomas A Demetrio of Corboy & Demetrio, issued a statement saying: "The family of Dr Dao wants the world to know that they are very appreciative of the outpouring of prayers, concern and support they have received." https://www.yahoo.com/news/united-airlines-...-073030438.html Another United passenger in first class recently threatened with handcuffs treatment Oops. The guy is lawyered up. This story's 15 minutes of fame is fizzing out. Only thing left is when the man is released from the hospital and does all the talk shows for a day (if he's willing to, since he's had a troubled past). Now that he's lawyered up, it's about run the cycle. Attorney-speak will end this story. It had its run, that's why I'm surprised the United CEO issued a third statement, this one pretty condemning of the way United handled it. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 06:29 PM) I can only speak for myself but it's hard to get worked up after a mass shooting, knowing nothing will change. After a room full of pre-schoolers were killed and literally nothing changed because of it...what else can I do about it? No one is stopping you guys from creating a new thread to discuss these specific shootings. I have expressed horror on here at the nutjob assholes who kill people in movie theatres and schools and been lambasted for my insensitivity on here. I was especially horrified at that asshole who shot up the theatre I believe in Colorado. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 07:01 PM) More like the straw that broke the camel's back. They are regarded by many who fly as the worst in customer service and some other stories were added in this thread to reflect that. Here's another one for you to shrug off since nothing seems to bother you. This is a horrific story. Really bad. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 07:26 PM) People can be mad about more than one thing at a time. There is plenty of reason for people to be outraged about video of a guy being dragged off his seat on an airplane after being bumped. There's also plenty of reason to be outraged about a judge being shot in Chicago. Or Assad using sarin gas in Syria. Or the shooting in the school in California. Being mad about each and every one of those things is possible! This is another Hall of Fame post. I love your first and last sentence both. Priceless.
  25. If the Sox were sold tomorrow would they really get 1.35 billion for the team? I just can't imagine a baseball team regarded as one of the worst franchises (compared to the elitist Cubs who own the Second City) in the sport and a so-so stadium being worth that kind of money. I mean, if Jerry and the partners sold tomorrow would they get that kind of money for the team? If so wouldn't it be a no brainer to sell with TV contracts in question in the future (demise of ESPN, etc)? I'd think it's time to sell, sell sell if you are an owner of a sports franchise.
