There needs to be a name for Buehrle-type pitchers

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 09:20 PM) What are your thoughts on Jose Quintana? I like him as a prospect. Hopefully he'll stay healthy and have lasting power as Buehrle has had. -

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 08:27 PM) Not to take anything away from Buehrle or Konerko, but there is another guy sitting in that Sox dugout that takes a lot of grief and was a better ballplayer than either one of them. Who, Harold? I don't understand how anybody can't be a HUGE Buehrle fan and not as upset as me that the Sox let him go. To me his greatness is a no brainer. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 08:09 PM) They have to cut down the time. Have to. I don't know what best way is to speed up pitchers, but it needs to be done. Bmags, all the umps have to do is enforce the 12 second rule, and the rule where batters can't leave the box, but they won't do it. They should all be fired and start over with umps. They are the one organization that does whatever the f*** they want to do. It amazes me.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 07:56 PM) First of all, Buehrle seems like the kind of guy who will get as far away from baseball fields as possible upon retiring. Secondly, while "ace" is a subjective measure, I think you can at least say that he has not had the consistency you would like from an ace. In 13 full seasons, he has had: An ERA+ of 130+ 3 times An ERA+ of 115-129 6 times An ERA+ of 100-114 4 times An ERA+ below 100 1 time I don't think of a guy with 38% of his seasons with an ERA+ below 115 as an ace. We all remember 2001, 2005 and 2007 really well but seem to gloss over 2003, 2006 and 2010. Since Mark has been in the league, who have been defined as "aces?" Aside from the 5-6 huge money teams, Boston, NYY, etc., name the aces. How many have been as consistent as Mark? Also, if you made a list of players that actually have earned huge contracts, he'd be on a short list of guys who have earned all the money. -
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) Putting this here since a lot of discussion in this thread has been about pace of play: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/...action/related/ Good article. If the umps would enforce the fricking rules as well as call the correct strike zone, baseball would be watchable again. 12 seconds to deliver a pitch? Yeah, right. Good luck with that. Umps won't enforce it unfortunately.

Why isn't Buehrle an ace? In my mind he's better than an ace. He's f***ing unbelievable is what he is. Whoever let him walk and not pay him on the South Side should be ashamed. I can't believe some of the snide comments about Buehrle and Paulie, by far two of the greatest players in White Sox history. When Coop decides to retire, I hope Mark replaces him as pitching coach for the Sox. -

He's never been on the DL. One of the biggest mistakes in Sox history was to let him walk. He deserved a huge payday on the South Side. All pitchers should copy him; many Sox pitchers DID copy him. He's one of the rare baseball players worth every penny because of the example he sets for others. Get the ball and throw it. Don't f*** around. Pitch. His style rubs off on his teammates, if they have a brain. Cause they can see Buehrle's style works. I miss him greatly. Can't believe he's not a White Sox. He'll pitch forever if he wants to, like Moyer did. The name for him is crafty lefthander. -
Great game. No complaints. I am a bit surprised the 2-0 lead got wiped away so quickly. I thought the Hawks just might run them out of the building. Hawks gave up way too many goals this series. I don't blame Crawford at all though he definitely didn't have the amazing acrobatic saves of a year ago. It wasn't meant to be, though it's a tough loss on home ice. Congratulations to a good Kings team that might win it all.

Semien certainly doesn't appear to be anything special, which is sad. He seems to have a clue in how to play the game, just doesn't hit enough. Maybe he'll emerge.

QUOTE (kapzk @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 08:06 PM) I think Sale will be the best pitcher to put on a White Sox uniform when it is all said and done. I LOVE Sale, but not in this era. Injuries.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 08:57 PM) Walsh had a pretty good 1908: 40-15, 1.42 ERA, 42 CG, 11 SHO, 6 SV, 464 IP, 56 BB, 269 K That's like comparing LeBron James to some guy who played in 1930. It's different eras. Even you Walsh lovers would admit mark would be in the top two of all time, then, if he was still a Sox.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 08:46 PM) Ed said read this Greg Ed Walsh is the best White Sox pitcher of all time. The HOF pitcher’s stats are gaudy. He stands third in WAR at 59.6. He is first in ERA with an incredible 1.81. He won 195 games while striking out 1,732 and tossed 249 complete games. While those numbers are fantastic, they are not what make him the best White Sox starting pitcher of all time. What makes him tops on this list are his 57 shutouts. That’s right, 57 complete-game shutouts set Walsh apart from every other pitcher who put on the uniform. I said "If the White Sox had made the right decision and re-signed Mark" there would be no question as to who the best Sox pitcher in history was. He'd be racking up accomplishment after accomplishment still.
-
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 08:36 PM) Ed Walsh says WTF! Even Ed Walsh would agree with me on that one.
-
Paulie baby! He'd be one of the best hitters on the anemic Royals team.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 08:09 PM) If Buehrle is done today, he's looking at 10-1, 2.10 on June 1. His value is such he's worth every penny. Every pitcher should copy his fluid motion and how fast he works. They'd avoid the DL as he has. What a pro. If Sox had re-signed him would be a no brainer for best pitcher in Sox history.
-
Baseball umps are a disgrace. Sale fires a pitch right down the middle for a strike and they call it a ball. I wish they had replay on balls and strikes just to get these umps fired or calling the strike zone.
-
This is vintage Sox day. Paulie with a blast! Buehrle shutting out KC! Better beware, Quentin might get a big hit.
-
Well, that tragedy is officially "old news." Let's hope there are no more, but this past one has certainly exited the news cycle. With the killer dead, there's nothing left to report on. Prayers for all the victims and their loved ones.
-
Buehrle shutting the Royals out thru five on Sunday. The guy is the best! Should still be in a Sox jersey. One of the few pitchers earning every dollar with innings/effectiveness. Mark, BTW, has NEVER been on the DL. If he wants, when he decides to retire he will continue to make tons of money (compared to the average Joe) as a pitching coach. If he was still with the Sox there'd be no question he'd be one of the top five players in Sox history.

Heat win again, easier than last year's series.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 01:08 AM) I think Hillary is wisely being as quiet as possible on most substantive issues and questions like her "plan" but it's easy to have an ass made of you over the course of two years. Wait to see what matters, what people want, etc. when it's closer to time to actually run That's true. What Balta said is too. We'll see what she comes up with. I'll be very interested to see what happens. Maybe she'll become possessed and want to win the presidency to help the country more than just be a figurehead. I would assume being that the presidency will be pretty much conceded to her that she will accept it for history's sake. She'll forever be known as first woman president. Hopefully she'll bring something positive to the table. I do think my Bob Dole comparison is a good one, though. It's just that she'll face no real opposition while Dole faced the democratic machine which always gets a boost from the media.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 30, 2014 -> 02:15 PM) Possible to do any biking/work on a stationary bike? Yeah I'm probably going to have to go the bike route. Jogging/walking has not been good to me of late.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 31, 2014 -> 07:41 PM) I'm pretty sure that Hillary Clinton is aware that she can be beaten in a hard-fought presidential primary. Really? I think this one is different. She's going to be running as a "queen of England" type candidate. It's basically her turn to win and she knows it. The Republicans pretty much have no chance nowadays until (if) they ever get their s*** together. I don't think issues will really matter re. Hillary and the more she gets out there and speaks it might just hurt her. She's gotten cranky in the past on bad days and my personal feeling is she has a little Bob Dole in her, kind of an unlikeable quality (on TV). And though some of you may get mad at me for saying this (the people who think platforms truly matter), the how you appear on TV factor is one of the biggest if not THE biggest factors in an election. To her credit, Hillary will NEVER be as annoying on TV as Sarah Palin. The moment I see her or hear a word come out of her mouth, it's time to change channels. Ugh.

I'm done with this game. This is a game where the Sox's current weaknesses are showing up and it appears the pitching is horrific today with the bullpen about to have to pitch a ton of innings. Not in the mood for it. GO SOX! Wake up and prove me wrong, but today's game has the makings of a lousy one.
