  1. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 11:17 AM) For a little while, yes, but Tyler Flowers will make those regrets pass very quickly. No one knows that though. It's not as if AJ is 40 years old. He probably has a couple good years left. We know we are getting a good player with incredible baseball smarts with AJ. Plus, the pitching staff seems to like him and be comfortable with him. Flowers has enormous potential and has impressed at all levels of minor league play, but he has yet to take a major league AB. I have no problem penciling in Tyler as our starter in 2011. But i'm very hesitant to do so next season. I actually think Flowers would benefit greatly a year playing behind AJ. Obviously I wouldn't want him in a pure backup role as that could hurt his development so they'd have to find a way to get him some AB's elsewhere (DH) as well.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 10:54 AM) Speaking of Fenway... Is it just me, or, historical neatness aside, is that not one of the worst ballparks in the Majors? It seems to reward balls that are hit poorly more than balls that are hit well. A rocket off the MONSTAH can result in a single, but a pop up can result in a homerun. A 302 foot ball that would normally be a foul about 40 feet before it reaches a normal fence can hook around Pesky's lame ass pole. I'm sorry, it's neat, it's different, but the anomalies it creates for the players who play there regularly and their stats is just annoying, and it seems like winning there is really a crapshoot. My personal feeling is that the majority of people who feel that way only do because it is where the Sawx play. it's not as if it was built 5 years ago to help them out. They just haven't changed it. I personally love that all stadiums are different and I love the little oddities and quirks many stadiums have.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 10:57 AM) I love to watch AJ play the game. I have ever since he was with the Twins. I wish we had a team full of guys who had the baseball IQ that AJ has. If we did, we would be running away with the AL Central. People don't like him, because they don't like to be made to feel stupid. AJ does that to a lot of players on a field. Everyone who is clamoring for us to trade him in the offseason will really regret that if we ever do. He is such a beneficial part to this ball club. His first pitch swinging can at times be frustrating, but he's just so under appreciated here. It's surprising actually.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 10:53 AM) My point is that we have no idea what Brandon Allen would be. Even if he started with a bang, he could fizzle out just as easily, and cost a franchise a hell of a money while they sit on a bust. At this time we just don't know. Duhhh, yes we do! He's the second coming of Albert Pujols, silly.
  5. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 10:40 AM) Exactly, a major league organization needs to prioritize plus-positional talent over relief pitching. It’s a simple numbers game: Allen, ideally, plays every day of the week in innings 1-9; Pena gives you maybe 3-4 innings per week. Its’ easy to see who has more value to a ballclub. I imagine the D-Backs were thrilled when KW called to offer them this stinker of a deal. This almost reminds me of when we drafted Royce Ring back in the 2002 draft. It’s an absolutely absurd over-valuation of a relief pitcher. That's such a short-sighted statement. Bullpen's win and lose championships for teams. What's the point in having a good closer if your pen sucks too much to get the game to him? Brandon Allen is a dime a dozen prospect (that's being a little harsh actually). He projects to be slightly above average at first base with decent power. It is not hard to find someone else to do the same thing. Not to mention we have Konerko still signed and two players with higher ceilings many people feel may eventually make their way over to 1B (Flowers, Viciedo).
  6. I get to watch this with the YES announcers tonight. Oh joy. 4 years ago they were some of the best in the league, but now they're just horrible.
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) You, sir, are correct. I would bet a good amount of money that, if you were to ask someone in a random city why they were booing him, they'd respond with "[stutter][pause]...he's a jerk." LOL. I have a friend who's a Yankees fan and whenever we talk baseball if I bring up the Sox he always has to throw in a "I hate AJ Pierzynski" comment. I then always ask why, and his response is always "Cuz he's an asshole". So I ask why is he an asshole? "Cuz he just is. I hate that guy". So yep, you're 100% correct.
  8. Abramovich keen to stop big spending City So basically Roman Abramovich is trying to get rules passed to disallow teams like Man City to do what they're doing. AKA the same thing Abramovich did when he bought Chelsea! Looks like the big 4 clubs in England are getting worried. This is also being supported by Milan and Internazionale, two of the richest clubs in Italy. These owners are only coming across as hypocrites IMO
  9. UEFA charge Eduardo for "deceiving ref" I am so glad to see this. This is what UEFA, FIFA et al need to be doing. I can't stand when players take dives so I would love if they started cracking down on this. Basically telling them ya you might get away with it during the game but that doesn't mean you're gonna get away with it afterwards.
  10. I'd love it because with the way it is right now, the NFL catch all thread becomes the Bears catch all thread and the NHL catch all thread is basically the Blackhawks catch all thread
  11. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 11:49 PM) No doubt it was a mistake. Ranks right up there with the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth for cash. +1 QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 08:13 AM) Chris Young was traded for major league talent (Vazquez), a starting pitcher that threw 200 innings for 3 years. I don't know what you call Tony Pena, but major league talent doesn't come to mind. And he's a 50 inning guy. Der...Yeah! That's it!
  12. QUOTE (Wise Master Buehrle @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 05:14 PM) NOw there's an interesting thought. In all seriousness, when does Hanley start arbitration? Is he still making league minimum? I don't know much about it, but if Hanley is gonna be making more money then Alexei soon... could you see a SS swap because the Marlins love to dump salary so much? Gonzalez and Votto will stay with their respective teams, IMO. The Marlins signed Hanley to an extension prior to 2008. He makes ~$8M next year and in '11, $15M in '12, $15.5M in '13 and $16M in '14. He also has a NTC. And the Marlins won't be trading him. I understand the allure, but people gotta stop bringing him up.
  13. 2 innings and no hits off of Nick f***ing Green. Pathetic. I don't care if we're up 5. Nothing was even hit hard. 88-90 mph fastballs and they knew they were coming...
  14. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 08:55 PM) Eduardo Escobar bumped up to 2nd in the order and he's responding; 2-2 currently with 2 stolen bases and 2 RBI's. His last month or so has been really encouraging.
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 04:41 PM) I don't know what Pena you've been watching, but I've seen him hit 94-96 relatively consistently. I'm not sure what its been the past couple outings but I've seen numerous game with his velocity in the mid 90's. He also gets great sink, but the problem is he doesn't have good command of the "run" on the pitches. He has a lot to learn but stuff wise he's above average. They're watching the make-believe version of Tony Pena because it helps them when they complain about the Pena-Allen trade over and over, and over, and over...
  16. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 03:28 PM) I was embarrassed and enraged when we went into Sunday - IMO a must win game - and we trotted out the "B" squad. I don't mind Ozzie always resting our guys but I always get confused because I thought the point was to keep them fresh for the late season run and these type of must-win situations. Seeing Castro and Lillibridge out there made me ill. Lillibridge doesnt even deserve to be in professional baseball. You have a must win game and your "Ace" on the mound. Aout to hit a huge road trip against the best teams in baseball and your plan for success is to run Brent Lillibridge out there? Really? You end up scoring 2 runs off a guy who has an era north of 6? Its pathetic. I love when people make these types of statements without thinking them through. AJ played in the previous 7 games, including the night before that day game. Giving him the day off before starting our road trip was fine and not unexpected. And that was Lillibridge's 1st start IIRC since being recalled. Basically Nix has not had a game off since Getz's injury. All the other regular players being in the lineup in addition to those two does not constitute "the 'B' squad". Come on.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) Why did KW think it was a good idea to trade an everyday player for this ineffective pitcher? Please tell me he doesn't have the type of contract where we'll be unable to dump him for a bag of chips this winter. Who are the every day player and ineffective pitcher you're referencing?
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 01:49 PM) Town hall meetings aren't a Constitutional right. That's why it's so absurd...
  19. QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) I don't want to see a Bobby Cox-like dynasty with Ozzie at the helm, but it's the players that aren't producing. This isn't the NFL, where the better coaches and coordinators "outsmart" the inferior ones. The Sox are sucking right now because the players aren't getting it done on the field, not because Ozzie isn't getting it done in the dugout or because Greg Walker isn't getting it done during pre-game BP. Agreed. Making the playoffs 12 or however-many-it-was years in a row is not something I'd look forward to.
  20. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) Dems demand to see ID if you wish to speak at town hall meeting http://www.breitbart.tv/congressman-demand...-hall-question/ LOL! but showing ID to vote is out of the question.
  21. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) He sucked in Arizona they could not wait to trade him away...............KW got took to the woodshed, Pena has not pitched 1 time for the Sox and NOT give up a run! Didn't know it was so easy to make four incorrect statement in such a short post.
  22. QUOTE (Tex @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 08:55 AM) I thought I'd gather a few posts in case you missed them in reading the thread. And I'm not saying they are unfair criticisms or not worthwhile remembering. Everyone who spends so much time in the public eye, and in this arena, will have detractors and admirers. Perhaps it is important to remember all of that, and learning some lessons. I thought I'd gather the same quotes and add some comments in case you have a bad memory. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) He f***ed up a lot when he was younger, but a very good senator. Duke is about as far from a republican that this board has. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 06:48 PM) He is (was) a reason that we SHOULD have term limits. Not necessarily a bashing. Look at Strom Thurmond, Robert Byrd, etc... there are a lot of people on both sides of the aisle who feel we should have term limits. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 11:11 PM) Yep. He also loved drinking, driving, and leaving the scene of a murder. But like Michael Jackson, lets forget about the horrible things, and concentrate on his music.... This was quoted AFTER the guy called out the "damn republicans" so it can't be used as a reason he made the post. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 12:45 AM) A patriot? Teddy? You sure you have the right kennedy? Just because he was a Senator doesnt make him a partiot, no matter how many of his views you share. I am sorry for his family over their loss, that is the extent of my respect. The Senate is a better place without him. He should have retired long ago when his health issues sidelined him instead of depriving his constituants of representation, but his ego, and sense of entitlement led him to hang on and miss countless votes and not do his job. See comment below previous quoted post.
  23. QUOTE (Crash73 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) A man, a patriot, recently dies, and you damn republicans can not just post your respect. He loved this country every bit as much as you. I didn't really see any of us damn republicans doing much criticizing in here. Not that there isn't room for it, but people have pretty much kept it to themselves. Keep trying to get angry though.
  24. NHL 10 demo comes out today for PS3 From everything i've read about this year's game, it sounds pretty awesome
  25. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 10:26 PM) We definitely have no use for the reliever we acquired for him. Just another rag arm hack we'll have to replace this offseason. hahaha This thread is funny,
