QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 16, 2009 -> 12:18 AM) I've got some connections to people working on it. Private funding seems to be a pretty big issue, while Rio and Tokyo are looking good right now. They havent even visited Rio yet and are only on day 2 of their visit to Tokyo -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 05:39 PM) BA as a starter so far Walk (caught stealing, but Lillibridge missed hit and run contact), K (critical AB) and 4-3 (at least he didn't K against Perry, who had just knocked down Alexei twice) 1/8 on the season (.125) So I see we're gonna be bumping up this thread after every poor BA performance now? -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 10:54 AM) I know a lot of people who like the idea of having the larger seats and leg room you get in business or first class, and could care less about all the fru-fru s*** ("fancy" food, fancy eating ware, hot towels, etc.). I am surprised that the airlines haven't yet employed a section in larger aircraft with business class seating and no other frills - and charge somewhere between coach and business class (since biz class is so much more expensive). I'd be all over that. I'm 6'3" and have broad shoulders - my ass fits fine in one seat thank you, but I could use the extra room. Ya for real. I'm 6'1" with broad shoulders and should probably lose 20 lbs so I fit fine in a seat, but I'd gladly pay a little extra for a seat with a little more leg room just to strecth out some. I dont need all the other stuff that comes with business/1st class but just a little extra room for the legs would be very nice
-
It's a service they provide. If you take up more than one seat then yeah, they should be able to charge you for doing so. Sucks for those people who are obese, but at the same time, it also sucks for those who get crammed next to them. Not trying to be insensitive, just stating how it is

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) I also don't remember Crede ever being booed as loudly as Wise was, despite extended periods of non-performance/K's and flares to 2B/RF...the fact that it was only the first or second game of the season, that's the thing that doesn't make sense to me. It's not like we are a sure-fire contender for the World Series. Are the expectations so high in Chicago that we're now like the Braves, Yankees, Angels and Red Sox fans? Well if the Getz/Wise, BA/Wise and Crede/Dye comparisons dont work we might as well try a Crede/Wise comparison!!! -

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) Well youre asking me to prove that a racist would never buy a Kobe Bryant jersey. I cant do that. To me what we're discussing is a lot more subtle than that. It's not just Scalabrine though, I mean the popularity of college basketball and hockey are in part driven by things some would not want to face. It works the other way too, the NBA sells a big chunk of those jerseys to minorities and the Sox cap itself...we know what connotation that has had. The connotation probably paid for Albert Belle oddly enough. You have got to be kidding. College basketball is popular because people are racist? I don't know really know what else you're trying to say there. Take a look at the Elite 8 teams this year and the players associated with that team UNC - Hansbrough/Lawson MSU - Lucas/Suton UCONN - Thabeet/Price OU - Griffin Nova - Reynolds Mizzou - Carroll L'Ville - Williams/Samuels Pitt - Blair/Fields That does nothing to further any type of point you are trying to make. And I love hockey, but it's hardly popular in comparisons to the NFL/NBA/MLB. You are really grasping at straws with those ridiculous arguments -

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 01:41 PM) That's my whole point though. No one touches the reason behind his popularity. He's a monumentally untalented basketball player who is cheered by the entire crowd every time he puts up a shot. It's really something to witness if yr ever flipping around and see the Celtics in garbage time. No one really touches on the reason for his popularity with a ten foot pole however. Thats where I wish we'd take the next step in discussion like this, nationwide that is. Talking more about what's unintentional but still a problem. Again this is something I see myself doing as well. The same reason people cheered wildly for Manute Bol and Muggsy Bogues. Scalabrine is a pasty, uncoordinated, red-headed white guy who shoots 3's and entertains the crowd. Easy going personality, funny, and very receptive to the fans. Doesnt try to act "thuggish" (a common complaint amongst those who hate on the NBA) and he just makes it easy to root for him. People always root for the underdog. Manute Bol was a 7'7" wire thin, African with an accent. He was always smiling, blocked shots, shot 3's surprisingly well and was goofy. Instant crowd favorite. Muggsy Bogues was so short people rooted for him on that alone. Following your logic, are we to believe that there is also a bias against average height NBA players because of the love these two got. -

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) You're not really responding to him with this post. There's no explanation here. Because he is making accusations about people here having misconceptions about Latin American countries, making fun of them and players because they are from them. I can not think of one instance when that is true so I'm asking him to name one. That's all. It's easy to make statements like that without providing examples, all I'm doing is trying to get him to explain his post. Because frankly i think it's full of crap. I was in Samana, DR last summer and let me tell you, you don't know poverty until you set foot in a place like that. Trying to compare the worst we have in places like Mississippi/West Virginia with places in Latin America just doesnt hold up. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) But sometimes there's no differentiating between a player's country/culture and the feelings that engenders. I mean, if a white player from rural Mississippi or West Viriginia did something, would we be describing those places as almost like 3rd world countries? How about no, because they arent...? Name one. Really? Where? Not trying to be a dick, but this post makes it look like you're just talking out your ass -

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) I dont think anyone really fully knocked down the Crede vs. Dye explanation I gave. No one really took apart what went on with Wise vs. Getz and their receptions. Someone tried but I dont know if it was enough to convince me. If what I'm saying is so flimsy and without merit, I should be getting good explanations. Instead it's just anger. People are coming up with some of the greatest White Sox hitters ever to knock down this argument, and mentioning Alexei's unreal rookie year with all those grand slams. But I think that's my point, that the untalented lovable grinder guy very often seems to be a white dude. Not always but it leans that way. I cant explain it but it's there. Wise is a 31 year old career minor league AAAA journeyman Chris Getz is a 25 (?) year old rookie who was one of our top prospects the past couple years. How can you really compare the two? They are in ENTIRELY different situations. Look i'm all for analogies guys, but these analogies you two are trying to prove your point with are awful. -

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 12:58 PM) When was that post? I think I missed it. Also, I was only basing my theory on two cases: BA/Wise and Crede/Dye. I feel those two cases are more relevant to the original question posed my Caulfield than bringing up other people from the history of the White Sox organization. Although, the Bevington/Guillen point is very valid. I'm going to keep this quick and short Wise: 31 Never had success in the majors Tempered success in the minors Below average arm Average (at best) range in CF Plus plus speed Decent power Not much room for growth/upside BA: 27 Former 1st round draft pick Rushed to the majors, never given a legit shot after initial failure Good minor league/college numbers Gold glove caliber CF Average speed Still possesses decent potential THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PLAYER JUST BECAUSE THEY PLAY THE SAME POSITION. -

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) Well I didn't explicitly call anyone out or drop any names or anything. I was extra careful not to do that. And as for the biased vs. racism point, I guess it's more appropiately comparable to the prejudice vs. racism point. It's just that some people, not all, has inherent behaviors towards things, all things in general, it's just how people are wired. It's basic sociological observations. So first it wasnt racism, it was bias. Now, it's still not racism, it's prejudice. Hello! Racism is prejudice based on race. Unreal. -
Official Recruiting Thread II
ChiSox_Sonix replied to greasywheels121's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Hey Juice, what do you think of UConn's class coming in this year? On paper it looks good (plus factor in Majok) but I'm interested in your opinion since you seem to know more about NCAAB recruits. Oriakhi is highly touted at center but he's awfully small for that position. And i fear Coombs-McDaniel is just another Stanley Robinson (and not the good one that appeared in his last 4-5 games). Also really hoping you tell me that one of those guards coming in can shoot the ball! Thanks -
On the plus side, maybe he'll bring his wife along

If they're fine signing Podsednik I'd rather they just called Florida and asked about Amezega.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 12:30 PM) To those attacking SouthsideDon with no real substance behind their defense.... let me ask this: What are your thoughts of Brian Scalabrine and his popularity in Boston? Granted, that is taken to kind of a circus level where they're almost making fun of him...... ....but if you scale it back it feeds into the Crede vs. Dye thing. Both those guys are quiet personality wise, so there has to be some reason why there's a difference in the way they're treated. I dont think of this as "Sox fans are racist." It's just that race affects what we do even despite our intentions, b/c the country has such a history with it. It's engrained in us. Yes, because it couldnt be due to the fact that Crede is the best defensive player we've had here in over a decade or the fact that he has also been one of our most clutch players. I'm surprised this is news to you, but Crede was bashed here more than almost any Sox player for his long swing, pop ups etc the past several years. There is nothing to dislike about JD. But the guy is slow, doesnt possess great defense or arm anymore, and is pretty bland personality-wise. JD also hasnt drawn near the ire that Crede has gotten here at times. I think that whole comparison between the two because of their skin color is absolutely baseless. -

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 12:13 PM) I actually think a lot of hardcore Sox fans, like on this board, treat black players a lot more harsher than white players. That's honestly the impression I get from how a lot of people act on this board. If a player is black, and he sucks/struggles, he gets booed and hated mercilessly. But if a player is white, and he sucks/struggles, get doesn't get booed as much and gets more benefit of doubt and their other attributes are played up as "positives" to outweigh the negatives of their suckitude. It seems like too many white White Sox fans cheer for white players even though they suck just because they "identify" with the player just because he's white and a young womanizer with funny stories about getting drunk at bars. Yet, if the player is black, the white fans don't "identify" with him just because of his race, which is ridiculous. Also, I think race plays a big role in why a white guy like Joe Crede has more of a cult-like following than a black player like Jermaine Dye. One would argue that both players should have an equal cult-like following, but the majority of white fans, such on this board, were devastated when Crede left the Sox via free agency and they have no problem whatsoever to see Dye being traded or leave as a free agent when his contract is up. The double-standards on race in this board is ridiculous. A lot of people will deny that race plays a role, but I don't buy it. I'm calling it out and the issue here is that race plays a subconscious role in how some fans decide to support a player or not. The issue of race is the only way I can make sense of how some fans are always clamoring for Anderson and ostracizing Wise despite the fact that both of them suck equally. So yes, I do think Anderson SHOULD be booed if he performs badly like Wise, but there's a strange adoration complex going on with White Sox fans for Anderson. GMAFB Good lord... -

All MLB Players Forced to Wear 42 on Wednesday

Wise to DL with Separated Shoulder/Anderson to Start in CF
ChiSox_Sonix replied to Jimmywins1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 08:07 AM) How does anyone really know that Anderson cannot hit consistently. He would have to play consistently to show that and he hasn't for 3 years. People forget BA hit right about .300 in July and August of 2006 combined. His September was a trainwreck but his mind is better now. Let him get 5 or 6 starts a week for the next month or so. If he hits like Lillibridge, or Wise or Owens then we all will know once and for all BA is a 4th OF at best. The sad part is the White Sox have not prepared him to play everyday. I'm not making excuses, this is his shot, its up to him, but they have had plenty of opportunity to give him some more experience the past couple of seasons against RHP that wouldn't have hurt them in the standings even if he took an 0fer but didn't. I think he'll start off relatively slow but will get hot in a week or so, and the White Sox days of looking for a CF will be OVA. Thank you. BA may never be able to hit well enough to be an everyday ML player, but he has never really had a legitimate chance. He was up in 2006 when he was not yet ready and it showed. Then, in 2007 he barely played in favor of Erstad and later Owens. And in 2008 he had like 10 AB's in the first 2 months. When you are a developing player, getting 4 AB's a week is not the way to prove yourself. BA has been grossly mishandled by this organization and never has been given a chance to succeed. Now, if he does not come through at this time it is on him, but we really can not use the past couple years as "proof" of his imminent failure. -

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 02:58 AM) On the surface, i'd say this injury makes us better, I have moderate expectations for BA, but i think he has enormous potential. Anything that leads to us replacing a player on our roster with Jerry Owens does not make us better -
