  1. Then explain the starts Miggy Cabrera, Carlos Pena, Nelson Cruz, Luis Castillo, Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Delgado, Albert Pujols etc are off to. Plus, Viciedo has been playing in Birmingham, Alabama. It's not like it get's that cold there. Do you just make things up? In 2005 Contreras' worst months were June/July. In '06 it was June and August. '07 was July and last year was June and July. They play baseball in December/January? Getting into what happens in football is an entirely different argument. And weather patterns in April/May are VERY different to December/January. Like not even comparable. It's been 42 at bats and he's 20 years old in AA.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 09:37 PM) Check out the history of South America and I'd say the only place that's been f***ed harder by sloppy colonialism is Africa. Here's the problem with that road. What place hasnt been? The United States and Canada were once colonies. Southeast Asian countries were once colonies. India was, Australia was, many countries in Europe once belonged to other countries. It's always kind of been the world works (or at least used to). The problem with South America is that once they drove out the Spanish, they were faced with economic problems, no central government and lack of strong leaders. Leaders such as Bolivar emerged but after they were gone the governments just didnt seem to prosper. They have plenty of resources down there, but they just havent been able to stabilize the regions. I think part of it has to do with the fact that the countries were created somewhat arbitrarily and the region's terrain makes it difficult to have a sound infrastructure.
  3. Some teammates of mine did it at breakfast once before school on a game day (to be fair, the waitress we had was a total b****). We ended up having to pick up their tab. They actually ended up calling our school and the table that did it got suspended for the game
  4. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 04:32 PM) I don't know. Every media outlet in Chicago yesterday sounded like Tokyo was the clear favorite at this point. They can say that but as much as the IOC will keep saying that they "pick cities, not continents", the recent games in Beijing and the fact Japan had Nagano not too long ago will play a major factor. Especially since the voting will be done only a year after Beijing there may be a "been there, done that" feeling amongst some voters. Politics definitely plays a role in this and I am convinced there is no way on earth Madrid gets the 2016 Games with the 2012 and 2014 Games in Europe already. Until the announcement is made, I won't believe that the games will be in any city other than Chicago or Rio.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 07:25 AM) At the rate things are going, they might be suggesting a position change in the minor leagues for Ramirez. I wouldn't be shocked to see him sent to BIRM to play CF if his problems continue for 2-3 more weeks. Viciedo is also struggling mightily in his adjustment to American baseball...but it's just 40 at-bats for both of them. Seems that most Latin players really struggle in April in the cold weather. The question is, of course, who would play SS? Lillibridge? Getz, Nix and Betemit aren't capable of playing that position on an everyday basis for long stretches of time, and you'd have to think the chances of Alexei coming out of it are greater than Lillibridge putting up an 800 OPS from here on out. A lot of it will depend upon the standings. If we're in hailing distance of first place, they will continue to be patient with Beckham and let him develop defensively. The things you say sometimes... There is no way Alexei will be sent to Birmingham. Viciedo is hitting .238 through 42 AB's. He only has 8 strikeouts so that isnt that alarming. Far too early to be saying he is "struggling mightily". And there is nothing to your "Seems that most Latin players really struggle in April in the cold weather" comment.
  6. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 12:02 PM) not getting worked up, just stating how i fell... Did you get hurt?
  7. QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 18, 2009 -> 10:36 AM) Awww... that's cute! The name of the book Chavez gave to Obama? "Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent," by Uruguayan journalist Eduardo Galeano, which blames foreign interests like the United States for exploiting Latin America for centuries.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) Problem with that logic is...if the city of Miami isn't getting to lock them in to a deal in exchange for the new taxpayer funded stadium, then why would the city build it in the first place? It's moot because the stadium deal is already finalized IIRC
  9. Tampa's stadium is in an awful spot. But if anything they should be moved, not contracted. As for the Marlins, i'm willing to give Miami a shot still since they are getting a new stadium in a couple years. A few years after they move in there and they still aren't drawing? Yeah ok, then maybe they should be moved.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 12:49 PM) I'm sure you're open to the possibility of a Mike MacDougal turnaround. He's got a 3.56 WHIP in his first 2 starts. He was horrid last season. Marquez blows. Just remember fathom's Gavin Floyd guarantee...
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 11:53 AM) He is Jesus. Shhhh
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 11:51 AM) One other thing about the Obama plan I'd like to note...one of the most obvious, profitable lines for HSR would still be hooking up Vegas and L.A. Long straight corridor through desert (aside from that annoying fault), enormous amount of traffic between the 2 cities, esp. on weekends, and if you hooked up S.F. and Phoenix to L.A. (and maybe Denver to Phoenix) you'd have a major green economic route covering most of the population centers in the S.W. The one obvious line that's missing from the Obama plan? LA to Vegas. It's almost as if the opposition party decided that idea sounded funny so they had to make a big stink about it a few weeks back. I was just out in Vegas and Lake Havasu in November. A Vegas-Phoenix line would get used too.
  13. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 11:45 AM) As someone who has been to NY once in his life... and doesnt remember much of it.... is "upsate", or anything away from NYC much more of a rural, conservative, area? I might be wrong with specifics, but i'm pretty sure the majority of counties in upstate new york generally vote republican. The Buffalo/Rochester area is pretty liberal, Broome county (Binghamton) is in the middle, Syracuse and Albany can lean left but most every other county is fairly conservative. Generally, the more north and/or west you go in NY, the more conservative it is going to be. As for being rural, Buffalo and Rochester are big, Albany is a good sized with a lot of smaller suburb cities, Syracuse is a decent size but it appears larger cuz theres always so much traffic and Binghamton is ~50K. Not many other cities of significance in the state.
  14. QUOTE (Soxy @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 11:42 AM) I bet at least 50% of New Yorkers would support Long Island seceding--although most of them probably wouldn't be from Long Island. . . Haha well that's different. Upstate NY (north of Westchester/Rockland/Orange counties) and NYC/LI really should be two different states.
  15. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 11:25 AM) I think I've mentioned this before. My wife sells Europen rail for a living. So, she knows the European rail system better than most Europeans, i think. She can get you a route from Madrid to Salzburg in under 20 seconds. She knows it that well. Recently, we had family travel to Europe on vacation and they said "when we get to Germany, we'll just rent a car". My wife just thought "you have no idea how Europe works, do you?". Didnt say it, but thought it. The European rail system is awesome. Having lived there I know a lot about it too. However, sometimes it still is better to rent a car depending on what you want to do.
  16. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 10:49 AM) 75% of Texans do NOT support seceding: I think that speaks volumes about Texas that a quarter of their residents are at least not opposed to it though. How many other states would even top 10%? Well maybe Hawaii and Alaska, possibly Utah but thats it.
  17. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 10:43 AM) You can make the argument that the area along the CT and VT state lines could easily be described as New England - much of Westchester county for example feels like New England. Much of Westchester county also feels like an extension of NYC/LI though too
  18. Yankee Stadium. There really was something about that place.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 16, 2009 -> 09:35 PM) No, no... he has American rights... I'll say it, and I mean it. f***tards like this have NO rights. You lose your right to "humanity" when you vow to kill thousands of innocent people. Period. You save lives by pouring water over his face or putting a cockroach in with him, I don't give a s***, and neither do most Americans given the choice. He lost his rights and liberty when he decided to mastermind a bunch of asshole zealots to kill a bunch of innocent people. *whiney* oh we're better then that... please. Couldn't agree more with this post. People like him deserve everything that they get.
  20. QUOTE (Soxy @ Apr 16, 2009 -> 07:43 PM) Btw, the thing about Owego is a dirty, dirty, dirty lie. Yup. Only thing "cool" is that in Appalachin, which is 5 miles from Owego, the house where the mafia used to meet and eventually got busted at is located there still. And NY is not in New England

  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 16, 2009 -> 11:07 AM) lol I don't hate Texans, but probably more than half the people I've ever known from Texas love talking s***, and they practically beg for me to talk s*** back cuz that's just how I do. My boss is from Texas, every now and again I like to blurt out "f*** Texas" just to see what he does. My friends and I almost got into a fight at a bar with a couple people from Texas a couple years back after we jokingly mocked their cowboy hats. We were kidding and having fun, they took it seriously.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 16, 2009 -> 10:38 AM) Its hilarious that you of all people posted this! That wasn't lost on me either
  24. Just saw it on msn.com Sad day. Who's going to let everyone know important details such as Troy Aikman having better vision when he puts his contacts in or players who move faster when they run???
  25. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 16, 2009 -> 08:49 AM) Seriously. And Rio is a lightweight bid with crime problems that make Chicago's look like nothing. Tokyo bids every damn cycle, Japan had the winter olympics just a few years ago and the summer olympics were just completed in that region. Everything I have seen and heard tells me that Chicago is the far and away leader in this thing, right now. Chicago does have the special problem of needing to obtain a lot more private financing, because we are the only country that doesn't directly fund the bids - but I think those will continue flowing in enough to make it work. Until I hear from an official source that Chicago is not at least a co-favorite with Rio, no one will be able to convince me otherwise. Everything points to Chicago at least being a co-favorite with Rio IMO
