  1. QUOTE (jeffthedude @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 09:56 AM) I obviously don't contribute on here but that sounds about right. The deluded homer optimism on these fan sites is amazing. Just look at what the Sox are! Steve Stone said just the other day on the Score morning show that the Sox are an 86-87 win team. There's no shame in that. The question has always been, is the division so bad it can be won by an 86-win team, or is it better than that? And now it is completely clear the Twins are better than that, and better than us. They play a less challenging schedule than we do from here on out. If someone else saw a playoff team out there the past couple days, I'd like to know what game you were watching. The Sox need to drop the old, ineffective deadweight off this team and start stocking good young players for the future. The cupboard looks pretty bare right now. I'm not a negative fan. I follow the Sox for the fun of it, not just for the hope they will make the playoffs. They won't this year. Yep, 2 straight games in a s*** hole of a stadium their team is built around playing on definitely makes that the case. Ugh. And its not as if Minny has an easy schedule the rest of the way. They have 6 at Seattle (the Twins dont play as well away from home), 3 vs NYY, 3 vs Oak, 4 @ LAA, 4 @ Oak, 3 @ Tor, 4 @ TB and 3 vs Det (plus 3 vs us later). Also, included in that is a 14 gm road trip where they play 24 out of 30 away from the dome. That is not an easy schedule. But i guess thats just deluded homerism on my part by not accepting that they are the better team because their record is worse than ours and they beat us in a whole 2 straight games in THEIR stadium. Nevermind we swept them in a 4 game set at our place earlier. All that matters is what just happened.
  2. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 03:26 PM) Ha. That whole campaign was a joke anyway and the result proves it so. Agreed.
  3. I'm gonna say i'm in...I'm not declaring the season over after 2 straight losses in JULY, which is absolutely ridiculous.
  4. Well at least Detroit, TB, Bos and NYY all lost last night as well
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 04:22 PM) His secondary stuff is mediocre. Check out his peripherals in the minors, how bout his K-rate compare to those two guys. Give me a break tribune company, Samadardizjai is not even K-rod lite. Whats sad is that this is coming from a prominent senior writer at ESPN, not some local paper.
  6. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 03:15 PM) I think he's going to the yankees Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, in Cooperstown, N.Y., to watch the induction ceremonies for Goose Gossage and Dick Williams, didn't sound like a man who's optimistic about making another significant trade before the deadline. The Yankees have been linked to Seattle's Jarrod Washburn, but ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney now reports that the talks have stalled. "I can only speak about the players on my team,'' Cashman said. "We've got a 25-man roster and hopefully an army of prospects behind them that we're prepared to go with right now. Unless something makes sense outside of our organization that's fair for both sides, we're going with what we've got. "In general, I approach it that I'm never optimistic until I get a 'yes.' It's so hard to find matches with anybody in the game where you can get fair value on both sides. I'll stay engaged with everybody that's open for business. We just hope that the guys we have are healthy, continue to perform and, in the end, are good enough.'' The Jarrod Washburn talks between the Mariners and Yankees hit a standstill late Sunday afternoon. The Mariners want a solid prospect in return from the Yankees, in addition to having the Yankees assume the bulk of the $14 million owed to Washburn for the rest of this season and next. On the other hand, the Yankees are willing to take on the bulk of the money still owed to Washburn for the rest of this year and next year, but they have no intention of including anything more than a marginal prospect in the deal. Washburn's overall numbers are not good: 5-9 with a 4.50 ERA. But he has thrown better the past two months, compiling a 2.93 ERA in June and 2.67 in July; one advance scout said that Washburn has been using his splitter more in the past two months. The Yankees did not have a scout in Toronto Sunday to watch Washburn, who had a strong eight-inning outing against the Jays, because they have seen him enough to make an evaluation and maintain their current stance in negotiations. Some executives with other teams are surprised the Mariners, whose roster is loaded with high-priced veterans at a time when the team is apparently in the opening stages of a rebuilding period, are not jumping on the Yankees' offer to assume the contract of Washburn, who is 23-38 in his three seasons with Seattle and had an ERA of 6.99 through May 21 of this season.
  7. This from ESPN's Jayson Stark Now that Jeff Samardzija looks as if he can be to the Cubs what K-Rod was to the 2002 Angels and what Joba Chamberlain was to the Yankees last year, the Cubs are no longer shopping for arms of any kind. According to clubs that have spoken with them, the only commodity the Cubs are still asking about is left-handed-hitting center fielders. But that's a need they're more likely to fill in the offseason than in the next three days. So in two starts (one of which was a blown save), Samardzija has already been placed with the likes of Joba and K-Rod? Hahaha wowwww....
  8. lol at one of the comments in the article "There are four ways to make an out in baseball. You can strike out, ground out, fly out............ Or you can be Juan Uribe."
  9. If i'm Kenny, i'd be on the phone with the Orioles about Sherrill and Johnson
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 05:46 PM) I thought the suit was pulled when the city and ownership agree on a settlement which essentially kept the name and history of the franchise with the city of Seattle. Now Seattle is going to hope for an expansion team or to lure another franchise over. No, the suit was separate from the deal with the city. It is on going and isnt expected to start until next spring. Schultz opted not to file an injunction to keep the team in Seattle until the trial outcome, but is not backing off his suit. Basically, he is arguing that Bennett breached the contract by not making a 'good faith' effort to stay in Seattle. Schultz is 100% correct, by the way. Bennett did not make any real effort. However, the chance that this works is extremely slim. Bennett's group is worried enough, however, to have added a clause in the deal with the city that if Schultz's suit were to win the previous contract with the city will be voided. I hope Seattle can get an expansion franchise soon, but David Stern is such a douchebag i'm not holding out any hope. Also, after this whole fiasco I really dont want to lure an existing team to Seattle as I wouldnt wish the movement of a franchise the way this just happened to the Sonics. You are correct though, that the franchise is staying in Seattle. Championships, statistics, records, colors, name and logo. Basically, Bennett aquired the rights to the players. I also dont see Schultz dropping the case, as he is trying to save some face in Seattle. Basically, i fully expect him to lose, but if he can cause Bennett some grief, frustration and loss of money than I'm more than happy to see him do that.
  11. QUOTE (RME JICO @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) He would have to jump up 10 spots in order to be in the top 20%. There is no way he makes it since it is 2B, SS, and 3B: RANK PLAYER 1 Michael Young 89.286 A 2 Miguel Tejada 87.500 A 3 Robinson Cano 85.714 A 4 Derek Jeter 85.119 A 5 Mike Lowell 84.857 A 6 Alex Rodriguez 84.000 A 7 Placido Polanco 81.746 A 8 Brian Roberts 80.159 A 9 Orlando Cabrera 79.464 A 10 Jhonny Peralta 77.381 A 11 Adrian Beltre 76.000 A 12 Carlos Guillen 74.405 A 13 Troy Glaus 74.286 A 14 Melvin Mora 73.714 A 15 Casey Blake 72.571 B 16 Mark Ellis 72.222 B 17 Ian Kinsler 69.841 B 18 Aaron Hill 67.460 B 19 Yuniesky Betancourt 66.964 B 20 Aubrey Huff 65.143 B 21 Mark Grudzielanek 64.286 B 22 Eric Chavez 64.000 B 23 Juan Uribe 61.905 B 24 Joe Crede 61.143 B 25 Jose Lopez 61.111 B You're s***tin me? We might get a pick if Uribe walks? Hahaha
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 04:08 PM) Hopefully Fields will play and return to the form of last year. Hopefully his bad ML numbers are a result of him being bored down there after proving he could play in the bigs. Put him in the lineup and produce, Josh. That's what I am hoping was the case with him this year too, because his numbers have been very uninspiring down there
  13. Although with Uribe's history against Robertson i have no problem with Juan getting a start tonight
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 02:09 PM) Ga Tech having a hell of a recruiting week, as they received verbals from top 5 pg MFon Udofia and rising star Glen Rice Jr. Also, recent speculation is that D. Favors and Noel Johnson might not be far behind. That would easily be a top 3 class in the nation. Is that seriously his name?
  15. Top 10 http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3501739 3 teams from the BEAST Duke and UNC went 1 and 2 shockingly
  16. Gammons confirmed on Mike and Mike this morning that he doubts Uribe goes to Boston
  17. QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Its not over until we says its over. Sheffield? Dead. Ordonez? Dead. Verlander? Dead. Neidermeye? Dead. Um, hasnt Verlander been really good recently?
  18. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 04:12 PM) Lowe, Carpenter, Clemens, Clement, and Pavano were all bigger names, IMO. Fixed. Lowe wasnt having his best year and was in Boston. They needed him, I dont remember him being available Carpenter was in his first good year and coming off an injury. At that point he wasnt as good as Freddy Clemens was in Houston b/c he wanted to be. He was not on the market. Clement? Seriously? He's never been more than a 3 or 4 Pavano i think was still with Florida. Cant remember if they were in the race or not, but i still would have rated Freddy higher IMO, Fredy Garcia was the biggest pitcher actually available, and if I remember correctly, there were several other teams after him when we made the deal.
  19. On the topic of Vegas...i'm goin out with some friends in a couple months and we're looking to book our flight and hotel soon. Any recommendations on where to stay? We're only gonna be in vegas a few nights then rent a car and visit our friend in Lake Havasu, AZ for the rest of the time. It sucks is the cheapest flight i've been able to find is $400 out of JFK so ideally the hotel wouldnt be that expensive, but at the same time be nice and conveniently located. Never been there before, we're looking forward to the nightlife and gambling.
  20. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) kind of like the hawkgasm after the quentin homerfun?? Probably, i didnt hear that one though. I happened to catch the Santo on Mike and Mike on the way to work this morning.
  21. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 01:20 PM) What is so funny about it?? I did not hear it. It was funny because Santo acts like he's having a seizure and sounded retarded with his yelling and screaming
  22. QUOTE (SoxPride56 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) Having said that, I am SO pumped for these next 10 games! Pumped, but incredibly nervous.
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 11:55 AM) America loves the redemption story. And it is great that Hamilton has cleaned up. But he gets more praised for falling hard and picking himself up and playing at an MVP level than someone who didn't f*** it all up in the first place. There's your answer. The media are suckers for these things. However, its hard for me to totally agree that is why he is getting more praise when he is having arguably one of if not the best offensive season of anyone in baseball right now. Regardless of his or anyone else's past history.
  24. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 10:59 AM) It really is funny if you think about it.... I mean I really respect the guy, he tried to keep some of his story away from the press, but then brought it all out for his campaign for Jesus. Now ESPN is trying to turn it into a feel good story about how he is a great role model... Sorry ESPN, If I had kids, I wouldn't want them doing the drugs in the first place... DaBearSox, this isnt directed just at you, yours is just the last the last I read, but this attitude some of you have about Hamilton and the "he did drugs omg hate hate hate" blah blah blah whatever is annoying. I'd be willing to bet a vast majority of people on this board who are over 18 have at least tried some drug at some point in their life one time. Do you really think Hamilton went out to get himself addicted? Do you believe thats what he was trying to do? Do you think he said to himself the first time he tried something "Yes, i cant wait to begin the downward spiral and ruin my life"? No, he didnt. Of course I am not advocating what he did, but it is very commendable the way he has been able to pick his life up and get his act together. Many people are not able to do that. It is admirable the way he has come back and gotten over his addiction. What he is doing now hopefully prevents some kids from making similar mistakes in the future. That being said and off my chest, to respond to the actual point o fthe thread, CQ has a good shot, but his lack of exposure will hurt him. Plus, if JD stays hot and get those RBI numbers up, teammates sometimes can have a negative affect on each other (splitting votes). And, you can never count out ARod when it comes to these types of things.
  25. Green Bay was the original, no need to change it. But either way I dont really care.
