  1. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 10:32 AM) Looking ahead to the candidacy of my other childhood favorite player, it's really astonishing to look at the career stats of Ken Griffey Jr. 1989-2000, ages 19-30 = 73.8 WAR, 140g/year 2001-2010, ages 31-40 = 3.5 WAR, 99g/year Sad. He really put up a 3.5 total WAR over a 10 year period? If so, whoa!
  2. It's funny to me when people like to act like things such as graduation rate or academic performace matter. People watch college athletics for the athletics. They root for who they root for for performance on the field of play. They don't care about how their favorite player is doing in the classroom. They don't care about what he'll be doing after he leaves school. People only pretend to care when it involves another school or if it leads to sanctions against their own. Certainly, alumni want their school to be looked at in as good of a light as possible. But when fans of a school's athletic teams try to act like they actually give two s***s about academics, please. No you don't. It just makes for a convenient little narrative when the opportunity to bash another school presents itself. It reeks of sour grapes every single time.
  3. Winds of Winter!!! Nevermind, who am I kidding?!?!?!
  4. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 01:53 AM) So Freeman and Benjamin are the only two left to decide. Jerningan is going, which he should, as he'll be a 1st rounder. Williams, Matias and O'Leary all coming back too. Offense should be filthy again next year. Winston back, 4 of 5 OL back with Barron easily sliding in to replace Stork. Depending on Freeman, RB should be loaded with some of Freeman/Williams/Green/Cook and maybe Pender? O'Leary is among the best TE in the country, which leaves the WR open for competition. Assuming Benjamin leaves, you have Rashad Greene, Christian Greene and then a lot of room for someone to step up. Isaiah Jones was a huge recruit and he's got the size to replace Benjamin. Travis Rudolph might get a chance as a true freshman. They're in on Malachi Dupre, who would be a HUGE get, and Florida commit Ermon Lane has been rumored to possibly flip to FSU too. Kermit Whitfield should be more involved with the offense as well. Shouldn't affect them at all but it appears Jacob Coker is going to be transferring.
  5. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) A team being great when you were a kid isn't a valid reason. Everyone should read the first part of "Now I Can Die in Peace" by Simmons. Whatever, I'm an Alabama fan from now on, too. It's easy and safe to be a front runner. So it's laughable when those same fans start talking smack. Lot of sweat equity there. There's kind of a little difference in attaching yourself to a team when you're 10 as opposed to when you are 30.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) This is a Sox message board, we make a living out of making fun of fake Cubs fans that moved here and only like a team because of a field and drinking. Its our nature. Oh, I completely get it. But sometimes people root for teams that they "shouldn't have ever begun rooting for" for completely valid reasons. Sometimes I feel people don't get that here.
  7. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 10:40 AM) i sometimes forget those 90s lean years for NYY must not have been the most appealing baseball fandom to join at that point We were living in Germany when I became a fan. My dad doesn't pay attention to sports. Prior to our move my granfather and uncle apparently really tried making my brother and I Yankees fans. Thankfully it didn't work.
  8. I'll definitely be in Cooperstown for Frank's induction. I've attended the ceremonies a couple times before so just to warn people, it will be nuts there. If you're coming from out of town book hotels in the next couple days, not weeks. Frank Thomas was the reason I became a White Sox fan living in NY. I've been waiting for this since the day he retired.
  9. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 01:17 AM) s***, I didn't know you were only allowed to root for schools you attended. Also allowable: Schools in the Big 10 or MAC, schools your father rooted for, schools who suck or schools within your geographic region of your hometown.
  10. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 11:44 PM) Dameyune Craig is Auburn's co-offensive coordinator. He was Florida State's QB coach from 2010-12. He helped recruit Winston. After FSU's 3-and-out to open the second half, the game broadcast showed a meeting between some FSU players and coaches and you can hear Kelvin Benjamin say "Dameyune calling all the plays!" Before Kelvin shouts that Dameyune Craig was calling out FSU's plays? 36 plays for 156 yards (4.3 yards/play). After? 30 plays for 229 (7.6 yards/play). Winston was 14/18 passing after that with 2 TD. Also great news today that FSU juniors Rashad Greene, Tre Jackson and Cameron Erving are returning for a senior season. So far, only James Wilder, Jr. has declared early. Jernigan and Benjamin seem likely to go, then it's up to Devonta Freeman and Karlos Williams. Tyler Hunter, one of the starting safeties to start the season, got a medical redshirt and will be back next season too. That's awesome. I expect to lose Benjamin but I'm sure at least one of Freeman/Williams will be back at RB. Also hoping O'Leary comes back as well. I'm quite shocked Erving is returning though, he was possibly a 1st round pick. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 01:02 AM) That FSU made adjustments by bringing out the towels in the 2nd half, and that Winston and the FSU offense dominated when the opponent didn't know what was coming? And that FSU has a lot of talent coming back next season? Is that ok? Or do I have to run the topics of my posts through you beforehand? You do if it's not one of the allowable Big 10 teams, apparently.
  11. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 06:37 PM) Sounds like Toronto offered a LOT of money. Reports have transfer fees and salaries for Defoe and Bradley at north of $100M in total investment. I'm hoping that, if true, Toronto immediately loans Bradley out (as Seattle has with Dempsey) to keep him sharp in a World Cup year. The fact of the matter is that if Bradley was getting squeezed out at Roma, it's an awful year for him to not be playing. You would think plenty of clubs in top leagues would be interested in Bradley though. Bradley is the most important player for the USMNT. To have him move to Toronto is... not great. Supposedly a bunch of clubs have now contacted Roma and are in a fight for him, including Wolfsburg, Werder Bremen, Schalke, PSV Eindhoven and now Sunderland is back in the mix. I think I'd prefer Schalke or Bremen but any of those 5 would be preferable to Toronto Edit: Nevermind. Italian press reporting Bradley removed from tonight's Coppa Italia lineup and his Italian reps confirming deal to Toronto is done. f***.
  12. Michael Bradley appears set to transfer to Toronto FC. To say that is an awful move and that it makes Clint Dempsey's look good would be a massive understatement

  14. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 05:56 PM) Nope. Read the chat. Is the chat free?
  15. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) Finally, it's here. So pumped for tonight. Me too. This game shouldn't be particularly close, but if it is it'll be worrisome since FSU has yet to play a close game all year. Tonight will be the night the rest of America learns what kind of a beast Kelvin Benjamin is! Go 'Noles!
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) You're not going to get any sympathy on a board comprised of mostly Bears fans. No one is ever going to get my sympathy for injuries after what just happened to Kansas City
  17. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 11:37 AM) http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10231471...all-fame-ballot ESPN unveils their ballots. Maddux and Frank were unaminous. I'm surprised Raines was left off by Olney
  18. Camp Cupcake training camp roster released today. Happy to see 3 U-20s get their first shot. Yedlin and Gil in particular
  19. I recently purchased some shares of Sierra Wireless and they're up over 10% the past couple days. Very interesting company as they have a big chunk of the M2M market and own over 300 patents.
  20. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) Local NBC weather girl Cheryl Scott is hotter: Everything yes.
  21. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:09 AM) Meh. Agreed.
  22. QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:50 AM) I've got a pretty good problem to have here.... Cousins vs one of the worst defenses of all time Cutler vs a garbage Philly D Big Ben vs a mediocre GB D I've rode Jay when healthy all year, but Cousins has the best matchup. I think Cousins throws all day. Big Ben might have to deal with weather. Cutler or Cousins for me, that's a tough one.
  23. I also have an interesting QB dilemma. It's a 2-QB league and my QBs are Luck, Fitzpatrick and Alex Smith. I also own the Chiefs defense so the concern there is that all I would do is cancel out anything the Chiefs D/Luck did. My other worry is that KC and Indy are going to meet in Week 1 of the playoffs so both teams/QBs are going to be holding a lot back here. I'm leaning towards going Smith/Fitzpatrick at the moment
  24. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 09:04 AM) Yep. This is the case with me too. I don't know a lot of Cowboys fans, but the ones I do know absolutely love him. One of my buddies tried to actually argue that Romo was in the Rodgers, Brady, Manning class of QBs. It's as if they take personal offense if you point out he just made a bad play. Completely irrational.
  25. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 06:30 PM) You realize most Cowboys fans hate Romo right? Most want him released and believe in the idea that this team would be better off with ANYONE else. Those dumb fans listen to the dumb recycled narrative from the media that says "The Cowboys will never win with Romo!!!". No. The Cowboys will never win the defense they run out there pretty much ever year. The Cowboys would never have made the playoffs in the last decade without Romo. Every single one of the Cowboys fans I know defends him irrationally whenever he is brought up and often when he wasn't even part of the conversation to begin, so no.
