  1. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) How about universities drop athletics and focus on education? Why should they field teams? It's a silly tradition started a hundred years ago. Have intermural sports and let those serious athletes hook up with pro teams. It may hurt the universities, but it will be much fairer to all the athletes who are being ripped off by this system. They can be pro athletes and not worry about going to classes or getting a degree. Why even allow high schools to field teams then? I mean, isn't the point of high school to get an education?
  2. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 04:29 PM) It's a great idea to travel if you can. I just finished studying in September and have been travelling a lot since then. Once I start working it will be a lot more difficult, so I just want to see the world a bit while I can. So far I've just stuck to Europe with Croatia (Dubrovnik/Plitvice National Park/Split), Paris, Iceland (Reykjavik/Southern Iceland), Czech Republic (Prague/Cesky Krumlov), Austria (Hallstatt/Salzburg/Vienna), Amsterdam, Belgium (Brussels/Bruges/Ghent/Antwerp) Barcelona, Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye, Swedish Lapland (Kiruna/Abisko + Stockholm) and Norway (Tromsø). Next I will be off to Thailand on Thurday. Just got my visa today that will allow me to stay for 60 days and I think I can extend for 30 days on top of that once I'm out there. It will be my 3rd time to Thailand and I have lots of friends there in Bangkok who I will stay with, but I hope to travel out to Myanmar or Laos/Cambodia as I have not had the chance to do that yet. Sweden and Norway were both northern lights hunting trips, which were amazing. We got incredibly lucky and managed to see the lights numerous times. It's quite a moving experience and something that I would highly recommend. Here's one of my photos of the lights in Tromsø: http://imageshack.com/a/img138/2496/jxhj.jpg That all sounds awesome. I lived in Germany for a couple years growing up but I really wish I took the time after college to back for a bit.
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 05:48 PM) ESPN is the worst
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:31 PM) That game neutralized a very strong Detroit pass rush. This Super Bowl could have an adverse affect on Manning's passing game. The last thing I want to see is the losing team and it's fans complaining how they would have won if the weather were better. I hope the weather is an absolute s*** show. One, I think it could be hilariously entertaining. And two, I think it would hurt Denver more than Seattle. That being said, if I had a team in the game I would hope for the most ideal conditions possible.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 11:42 AM) Classless thugs ruffians... FTFY
  6. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) Punishing reckless endangerment of other people's lives = totalitarian nanny state? Sounds like you're drunk right now. We are turning into a nanny society but that's a horrible example. Drunk driving laws are not harsh enough IMO
  7. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 10:59 AM) booze, pot, pills, drag racing, and resisting arrest. BOOM I read on twitter (so take it FWIW) he doesn't even have a green card. If true, any other foreigner would be long gone
  8. Justin Bieber should be one of those words that the Soxtalk forums censor out.
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 10:40 AM) I may be wrong, but I think he only pays that state's income tax for his home games. For road games, he pays state income tax for the state that game is in. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 10:41 AM) That's not exactly the way it works with players though. When the Yankees are playing the Sox at the Cell, Tanaka's check will be taxed at the Illinois level and so on. He will only be taxed at the ridiculous NY level when they are playing at home. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) The IL numbers are old. They now pay 5% income tax instead of just 3%. Then you also have to add in City of Chicago and Cook County stuff. I know. It was more to make the point that tax ramifications probably didn't come into play at all. You'd be talking about a couple hundred grand one way or another.
  10. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 10:21 AM) After the New York taxes, I wonder how much more Tanaka will actually receive, compared to the $120 Million which many of us conjectured was being offered. According to this site, his taxes based on his average yearly salary (22.143M), would be: NY: 1.941M CA: 2.230M IL: 664K
  11. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 09:59 AM) I hope he sucks. I hope he's the biggest bust ever. Mostly because I can't stand the Yankee$.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:43 PM) It was a damn dirty play. The Seahawks are still dirty as s*** both on and off the field. That's fine, but what does that have to do with the other play? Not really at all comparable to what the guy not dressed tried doing.
  13. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:38 PM) The Seahawks want to talk about a dirty play by the 49ers on the sideline. The team with most PED suspensions in the league. That's rich. Using one statement that has nothing to do with the other as some sort of excuse. That's rich. Some dude not dressed takes out the Seattle player on the sidelines and people are trying to deflect attention by bringing up things that are completely irrelevant. It's absurd. 49ers fans have been hilarious since Sunday night.
  14. QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 11:18 PM) DC just doesn't seem like they have a clue as to what's going on. I'm speculating the Marvel movie would possibly be Dr. Strange but I have no idea. What I'd love to see and probably won't happen is to have Ironman 4 in that slot. I know I've heard that they might be done with Ironman, at least for now, but if Marvel wants to stay in that spot, it'd be nice to see them bring a big gun to the cinema as well. Heck even an Ironman/Hulk movie would work. I know Mark Ruffalo wants to have his own Hulk movie but it seems like Hulk can't hold a movie on its own, so adding Ironman would be great, but who knows. I'm probably more of a casual viewer with bad ideas, haha. IM4 won't be until they wrap up Phase 3. They still have potential for CA3, Thor3, GOTG2, Inhumans, Dr Strange and Black Panther before it culminates with Avengers 3 in 2017.
  15. It would never happen, but they should make the player who scored the TD attempt the PAT. That would liven it up.
  16. I watched the first part of the Discovery miniseries Klondike last night and found it very enjoyable
  17. QUOTE (farmteam @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:59 AM) It probably makes sense, though I haven't compared the rates of missed extra points vs. injuries on extra points. It would help speed up games, too. Something like 5 out of 1200 PATS were missed this year which equates to a 99.6% success rate.
  18. Appalachian Outlaws is great
  19. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 12:41 PM) Who thought it was a great idea to have a superbowl in NY in February? Someone needs to be taken behind the shed. The same reason people thought it'd be a good idea to host a soccer tournament in Qatar in June/July. $$$$$$$
  20. Where do college football players come from? About as you'd expect, but still interesting data
  21. Crabtree reportedly tried to fight Sherman at a charity event This is according to Sherman's brother, so take it for whatever it's worth.
  22. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) So a Seattle resident who is a Seahawks fan says "NANNER NANNER BOO BOO RICHARD SHERMAN IS AWESOME" and suddenly it's a great read. Let's be clear - I have no problem with what Sherman does on the field. When the game's over, stop the trash talking bulls*** and talk about your team. I didn't say it was a great read. I said it was a good article, and it makes a lot of sense. But OMG SHERMAN OMG SEAHAWKS PETE CARROLL!!! AAHHH ASSHOLES ROID RAGE PEDS!!!!
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) That you can be violent and emotional without talking s*** and being an asshole. I mean, he called the guy mediocre. If that's being an asshole than I give up. He wasn't vulgar and he wasn't using foul language. What Sherman did bothers me a lot less than players getting in each others faces, jumping up and down like lunatics or making eccentric gestures following a tackle in the secondary in the first quarter. He made a fool of himself. But so what? These are grown men, we're really supposed to be feeling for them so much? Like, let's hope he didn't hurt anyone's feelings?
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 11:02 AM) Compare Jameis Winston and Richard Sherman's reactions. Winston had a rather violent and emotional postgame speech as a redshirt freshman in college. Nobody (other than Dee Dee McCarron) had any sort of negative reaction to that speech. Not being snarky, but I'm not sure what your point is?
