I wouldn’t say that Trump or the GOP have solved this problem either, they just recognized this in their campaign and capitalized off of it. The jobs haven’t come back for the folks impacted by automation and outsourcing and they haven’t found new industries for folks to work in. It seems to me that the party who works on job retraining legislation, alternative energy jobs and investing on jobs in infrastructure will be the one who wins elections instead of what Trump is currently doing.

True, but did they have a reason not to? I guess the margin was so slim between all of those who voted that he was going to get confirmed. Three democrats also voted for Gorsuch and would have had to vote Nay for Murkowski and Collins to have a shot at voting down Gorsuch. It seems unprobable that they’ll all vote against Trump’s nominee, but I guess it depends on the candidate he brings forth. We just better hope that there’s not another retirement or death before Trump leaves office or there will be a 6-3 conservative advantage, unless he gets a swing vote in there without knowing.

30th anniversary of the clocks running backwards

Our attendance figures and make me wonder if they’ll ever move to another state, even though I bet it would still be better to stay in the Chicagoland area. The Sox should rebound with attendance if their rebuild puts them in contention year after year. -
Not necessarily, but it seems like I hear about more progressives than moderates. I guess it depends on the area of the country though as some candidates may do better in another area as moderates than progressives and vice versa.

That is true on the tax cut, although Murkowski doesn’t want Roe v Wade overturned, voted against the ACA repeal, against DeVos’s nomination, against Trump’s immigration policies and the FCC’s net neutrality rules. She and Collins also voted against defunding planned parenthood, called on republicans to vote on Garland and has introduced an immigration solution. It’s a long shot, but we will see what happens. I’m just glad there are moderates like them to reject bad policy instead of voting along party lines all of the time. It’s too bad McCain probably can’t make it to vote against the nomination and buck Trump one more time.
-
Murkowski and Collins? Not always.
-
I’m surprised the DNC isn’t running more mainstream moderates, especially with the success in Alabama and Pennsylvania.
-
You still think they wouldn’t try and screw Trump over?

https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/01/politics/susan-collins-supreme-court/index.html If Collins and Murkowski opposed Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, they’d still have their seats until 2020 and 2022 respectively. Do you all think this is possible to happen, so that voters could decide what should happen with the Supreme Court nominee? I know that Trump selects the nominee but if the democrats win back the majority, is it possible to successfully block his nominee for some time?

Hopefully Thomas Hardiman is the choice. I would also say Brett Kavanaugh, but he doesn’t appear to be a swing vote like his old boss was.

I don’t agree that the gay couple or Sanders getting denied service, but if the gay couple lost in court and the baker won, I’m okay if Sanders doesn’t get served and the woman from DHS gets heckled at a Mexican restaurant. It’s the owner’s and customer’s freedom to do what they want.

When I read this story, I thought of two words:
-
So was it $716 billion for one year of military spending and not $80 something billion? Too bad a fraction of that can’t go to helping people with public education, at least at the community college level or through academic GPA set scholarships.
-
I miss John Rooney, I always thought he was good and made Farmer better.
-
Wouldn’t Harris and Sanders be better than Warren and Sanders? Or even someone other than Bernie as VP?
-
I wonder what age group and type of voter is mostly to blame for not showing up for midterm elections.

Thanks for kicking off this discussion because I think it is big enough that it deserves its own thread. I honestly believe that there will be a wave, but I don’t think Democrats will control both the House of Representatives and the Senate. At the very least they will take one over. I don’t think they are blowing it but they face some competitive races that they may not win. I heard about the California primary with multiple candidates in different districts that might hurt them if they don’t even make the ballot due to the number of people running and the whacky primary rules California has. My district faces a tough race between the incumbent, Peter Roskam, and the Democrat, Sean Casten. Roskam refuses to hold town halls and has voted on the tax cuts and Trump’s failed healthcare bill. He sides with Trump on a lot of issues as well, which is really firing up progressives. In Downers Grove, it’s a republican district that may support him, but Casten just needs enough democrats and independents to turn out, and have some moderate republicans vote for him to unseat Roskam. That’s what I’m hoping for at least. Why is the IA-01 race so huge? I don’t know much about it but want to know more.

I feel for Spiegs, he was not an issue. DeCastro really screwed him, even if he and Goff still have their contracts. His show’s ratings weren’t that bad and I didn’t feel he was too political. McKnight and Bernstein are okay and I can only stand McNeil and Parkins in small doses. I definitely have to go all around the dial to fill my work day and enjoy cross talk at 1:45 on AM 1000 as opposed to 670’s. Bernstein is good in his slot and it’s nice to have crosstalk in the morning, but he would be better on the afternoons where we could hear the meatball Chicago sports fan call in. Hearing some of those idiots call in and argue politics was funny too.

I said I’m not sure I agree, I haven’t been persuaded otherwise yet. I would love to get more for the taxes I pay and also have my property taxes reduced a bit in my new home, but I’m not sure it will happen. If it did, I’d be interested as to how everything that was proposed would work. Bernie wouldn’t be my first choice, Biden would. Maybe Bernie would gain more support from beyond his base than I think he would, but I don’t know.
-
I’m not sure I agree with the taxes that are involved with his plans on healthcare or making public universities free.
-
Mostly anything that is free and the fact that he focused so much on the 1%. If he went against Trump o would probably vote for him but again, I hope Biden, Hickenlooper/Kasich or another young democrat runs.
-
I want nothing to do with Sanders as of now. He has some ideas that I can’t agree with as a left leaning independent. Biden with some younger VP or Hickenlooper and Kasich is something I could get behind, even if the latter is a pipe dream.
-
I’d still vote for Biden even if he’ll be 78, Trump will be 74. Biden probably has the best chance of the Democrats to win, in my opinion. I feel like he can reach people from both sides that other potential candidates can’t, especially with the working class that Trump got in PA, MI and WI. That is unless the progressive candidates could somehow turn some Trump voters towards voting for them and don’t scare off others. After seeing “1968” it would be nice to see Kasich or Flake challenge Trump at the Republican National Convention, but I doubt it would actually work.

Well, we clearly know what side you support.
