My beef is that it’s not even a discussion lol. They both strike me as bad and we already had two “bad” players beforehand who play the same position who we cut. I’m all for signing “could be” guys over “has been” as a principle, but I think all the players being discussed are just really bad. Canario in particular has had a few opportunities. More than Colas. Maybe he isn’t such a head case.

I wouldn’t call this ‘having fun’. Not my definition of the phrase. Or most people’s. one also might assume that, even if Robert and Benny are traded (the ostensible bats you’re referring to), Lee/thais and Amaya are being replaced with bat-first players. I don’t think you can project a worse offense than last season, and the shutout counter was a tired meme by midway through the season (on the worst team ever).
-
Seems like they all are just bad is my point. I wouldn’t have signed Jankowski and em, I would want to see what colas could do over an entire season. Or try out Sosa or Baldwin in the outfield. There’s sort of a “glut” of infield players who may or may not be able to play. Colas was like doing nothing, but it would be amusing to watch the first -15 WAR player in mlb history.
-
I guess I’d rather have him than jankowski or any of the veterans…but like I just alluded to, why Canario over colas or fletcher?
-
Prove to me that he’s more useful than Oscar colas. Every team wants good players. If you’re any good, you’re not getting traded for cash. Either that or you’re a gambler (see: Popeye). Mets outfield situation isn’t great. The cubs wouldn’t want a future guy to replace one of their grandpas in the corners? we just DFA’d two outfielders who recently “had potential” but busted. I’d prefer fletcher’s bust profile over canario’s. At least fletcher has one mlb level skill.
-
I don’t get the appeal. The cubs traded him for cash. The Mets DFA’d him for nothing. Are the Sox going to figure out something different? Because they’re so good at developing hitters. Far as I can tell, his only selling point is he’s 24.

right, it's terrible when pitchers go five innings without allowing a run. you hate when that happens.
-
love that Brooks likes Hank Williams.
-
85 pitches, 1.4 whip, 0 ERA. the WHIP isn't great but the stat doesn't account for producing double play balls. Saved our guy. He could've stayed in. Two good outings from the starters.
-
step away for a minute and Cannon is still cruising. now hit the ball
-
5IP, no runs would be a good outing imo
-
Ward took a good at bat, Cannon got screwed on two calls with Soler, otherwise he's looked very good. Cruising after that first inning. Maybe you don't like all the baserunners.

I'm glad they seem to all like each other/their manager is the point. It's also the sort of celebration that only the former worst team of all time would do.
-
did anybody post this video? a little corny, a little overexcited for a regular season win against a bad team, but you have to appreciate the vibes. I'm glad they're excited and seem to care.

just what we all expected, right?

yeah, I hate that too. you make a good point, the dfa is likely not related to his public behavior. I think that minority owner (the failson who inherited the role, whatever his name) keeps getting his bud Clev a job. but also, hold it against him. check this out, your co-worker's wife says he's been abusing her, spitting on her kids, etc -- is your first instinct to think "oh man, she's single now, let me make my move"?. it's just bizarre. I have to assume such a weird mentality impacts one's ability to take baseball playing seriously. totally think Clev should not be on this team. I hate it even if he could still play. I miss South Side Hit Man.

I mean, the guy is a weirdo. I don't like him either. Also it seems like he's bad at baseball and not getting any better. Hoped he'd be a good player, but they gave him a chance when they paid him $2.7 million and gave him an extended MLB opportunity in 2023 that he completely blew. -1.5 WAR in 75 games is next level bad. remember this whole saga? just a strange dude
-
caulfield already beat me to "who?". I'm not positive he was in on the bit.
-
"back then the white sox didn't want me. now i'm old and injured, the sox all on me"

good point. I like Taylor and, at this point, I probably should just realize Fletcher isn't a MLB player and doesn't have the speed to cover CF except as a backup. Team is probably better off with Taylor. Not going to lose sleep over it. Here's to hoping we trade with Philly on Robert and get back Justin Crawford somehow. Baseball America dinged his prospect status a little bit, but two outfield positions filled by Crawford/Montgomery is something I'd be excited for.
-
Drury can actually play, but what's the point? I'd much rather see any one of Sosa/Ramos/Baldwin/Meidroth/Vargas whoever play the infield instead of him. Oscar and Fletcher got sent down too...days ago but I'm just noticing. Oscar seems completely done-zo but might've figured Fletcher was getting a spot on the bench instead of Taylor...who Fangraphs apparently thinks is starting in left with Benintendi moving to DH. Might've given the spot to Ramos who I guess is injured...Drury seems like a better option than Taylor come to think of it.

conspiracy theory: it's the changeup.

Interesting choice. A good one IMO, a fair one perhaps. I don't really know what happened to that guy. But if anyone on our team could produce 8 WAR over the course of a season, sign me up. I forget what player we were talking about, Lenyn Sosa maybe? Regardless, if any Sox prospect can produce a positive WAR, it's a step in the right direction.
-
Pedroia or Utley is who I was imagining as a ceiling. Maybe the totally wrong profile. Guess we’ll see.
-
I had no opinion of Meidroth prior to the trade -- except that his name makes him sound like he's a dark lord of Mordor or a Wizard of the Sword Coast or some s%*# -- which is objectively awesome but doesn't necessarily speak to an ability to swing a bat. But since then everyone is talking about how he's secretly great and never K's, he has the 'sneaky' profile of a star player, he's essentially Luis Arraez or Ichiro; and yet they've been downplaying Braden a little bit, a guy I thought we could've taken fifth and who has done nothing since then to change that opinion. All I'm saying is that you guys made me start to have expectations for him, you can't just pull the rug out from under me like that telling me to moderate my expectations. I still think 2b is Lenyn's job to lose though, that guy is actually gonna be great.
