I agree with your first couple sentences. However, Hill is playing like a starting CF right now. Doyle hasn’t been that guy since 2024. Will Hill keep up his current pace? No, of course not. Also, there is obviously a difference in the quality of prospects that were involved in the trades you mentioned. So it’s not really weird when people say that.

Next question is what made him blow up offensively for the Pirates in 2024 and then come back down to earth?

My opinion is that @Dick Allen is right. I doubt most people were treating Mason Adams and Boston Smith as untouchable prospects. They thought that some of Castillo’s contract money should have been sent over by the Mariners for next season due to the inclusion of Smith. Instead, Getz paid for Dominguez’s $2 million buyout for next year. Also, trading Mason Adams wasn’t the problem. It’s who they traded him for. Trading him for an outfielder that is arguably worse than the outfielders you already have is questionable.

I guess I should have said pitching staff in general, considering Thorpe and Smith aren’t ready yet and someone will need to reduce Schultz’s innings. Not sure what the Sox plan is.

That was the rumor. Not sure if the amount of cash considerations the Sox sent the Mariners was released. But it looks like it would be $10 million in salary for Seranthony next season.

I think Braden was always targeted for RF. Pereira was a flier acquisition but I don’t think he could handle CF either, and I don’t necessarily think the Sox considered him as an option there. However, Getz had to throw resources at a CF and DFA Pereira because his previous attempts at acquiring a CF have failed (see Zavala and Acuna). You don’t think Adams could have potentially helped the Sox bullpen right now?

That’s just crazy and I don’t blame Getz for getting rid of him. Hill had a -0.1 bWAR with the Sox. However, I can blame Getz for paying a premium to acquire essentially the same player. That’s the rough part IMO.
