This is getting a bit ridiculous. Ray Ray is not being a bully. Any baseball fan that wasn’t biased by being either a Rockies fan or a White Sox fan could look at Doyle’s stats, defensive performance (via stats and videos), and age, and wonder why any team would pay a premium to acquire him as anything other than a backup CF / fourth outfielder. Some posters are coming up with every reason in the book to prove there is a light at the end of the tunnel with Doyle, more than likely because they are biased as White Sox fans. Perhaps Doyle can break out with the Sox but the odds aren’t exactly with him based on his most recent performance.

Another reason I’m not a fan of the trade. Doyle is already 28, the same age as Nolan Jones. If he was a bit younger, fine, perhaps he’s worth the shot. Not a fan of acquiring guys that should be in their prime and are coming off their worst years ever. Sadly, Jones’ one good year with the Rockies was much better offensively than Doyle’s.

That makes sense. They just traded Adell, not like he was any sort of stud, but their outfield is really ugly now. Pereira could start for them today.

Why do you think would Pereira clear waivers? There has to be one bad team out there that has room for a 25 year old outfielder with power. I think Getz was trying to move Hays/Pereira and simply ran out of time or no one was that interested in trading for them.

Not really. The Padres have just about the last ranked farm system in all of baseball so you have to factor that in. Neither prospect is a top 100 prospect in the MLB. The most annoying part of this trade deadline is that this is probably half of our next offseason already. A starter, a reliever, a center fielder, and a backup catcher. I’m not seeing much spending happening next offseason, with or without a lockout.

I would have passed on Doyle but I wouldn’t have balked at Adams and Wolkow for a rental starter. Hopefully we won’t need one and Thorpe/Smith can fill the role. I don’t think Getz ever considered a rental player, which seems fairly obvious with all four players that were acquired being under control for future year(s).

I do agree that we were all expecting Pereira to be able to play CF when he was first acquired, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

I’m just not seeing where Doyle is much of anything either. He’s 3 years older than Pereira and has had a lot more time to prove himself in the majors. He has almost 1,450 more major league plate appearances than Pereira and here’s his career line. Yikes… .233 .284 .385 .670

Most of the grades in this thread are fairly comparable. I’m not seeing any hyperbolic “glum chums” ranting. You even graded it a C. Hyperbolic would be reasoning a player that you formerly liked out of your mind over one single defensive miscue.

I don’t think his one recent good game is the frustrating part. But Pereira was supposed to be a power bat that strikes out a lot and could play all three outfield spots. Now we traded away a potential nice bullpen arm, a flier young kid, and DFA’d Pereira to replace Pereira with the similar player that he was supposed to be, only Doyle is 3 years older. That to me is the frustrating aspect.

Overall, I agree. I was specifically referring to the Doyle trade and Pereira DFA moves. Just focusing on those moves, I’d rather have Adams, Vielma, and Pereira over Doyle. I think what Adams could have done for the bullpen along with Pereira in the outfield is more than what Doyle will provide.

It’s just further proof that they won’t be doing much in free agency by grabbing a bunch of guys under control. Nothing is changing under Jerry in regards to free agency.

How many more innings does Schultz have in him? Seems like they will have to rely on Thorpe/Smith more.

Agreed. Home games at that park will help him as well with his flyball tendencies. He actually pitched pretty well over the past month. I won’t miss the walks however.

It’s funny how you just continue to make up stuff in your own mind that no one suggested. Where are the posts of people saying Getz should have thrown a bunch of prospects at acquiring Adley Rutschman or even Tyler Stephenson?

C for the same reason. Could have potentially been an A or B if they used the Doyle trade package or comparable for a rental starter rather than a CF that can’t hit a lick. Having to DFA Pereira is the poop on the poopsicle of this series of deadline trades.
