  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 03:50 AM) Ethier/Crawford + cash would have to go for Danks. Ramirez for Kemp + cash. So they're quite different scenarios. One would leave us with a former MVP and serious hole at SS. The other would leave us with Bassitt, Noesi and Johnson/Beck at the back end of the rotation until the Sox added another starter and Rodon is recalled. It would definitely force them to acquire a starting pitcher. so the first bolded, you are selling low. so this is another idea of expanding on the Alexei trade, when you posted about how it will leave the sox with a hole?
  2. QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 03:57 AM) I don't get whatever infatuation there is for Victorino. There is no reason to believe he will hit even .260ish with no power. Let's face it, de Aza is probably better. i can't agree, the book is not close to Victorino, he can still produce.
  3. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 03:45 AM) Yes indeed. Have a look at what he's been up to. He's been struggling I guess you could say... http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...id=soptic001jef who made the trade Hahn?? either way, even if he comes back the needed conor now.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 03:53 AM) That's about the most reasonable trade proposal involving Danks that I've seen so far. all joking aside, it is a win win situation, we will get rid of Danks contract and get Shane who i believe will bounce back.
  5. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 03:39 AM) Yeah, sobriety and middle age is catching up to me quicker than I thought. i thought you were there when they created cave art.
  6. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:38 AM) Man, Jeff Soptic for Conor looks so good in retrospect. pls excuse this, but i was out of it for several yrs due to illness. can you explain this. was jeff use to trade for conor??
  7. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:34 AM) Oops. I could live with Pollack or Peralta I suppose.
  8. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:26 AM) According to the splits on the Sox site Danks was more effective against lefties, right handers hit him pretty good. Another problem with Victorino is judging by his splits, he seems more like a platoon player at this point. Hits left handers OK but not so much against right handers. Sox would have to find a left handed bat to platoon with Victorino in LF. I could tolerate one year of Victorino if it means two less years of Danks. DANG, who would've thought you had the ability to ask a great question.
  9. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:14 AM) I'd love to grab Inciarte with either of Pollack/Peralta being my second choice. Inciarte would look great batting #2 behind Eaton. Maybe the offer Flowers and Semien for Inciarte and Montero? I'm probably way off but you know what I mean. Something like that allows the Sox to use Phegley in the backup C role. i really doubt that AZL will go for that, he just won the ROY award. he is their fixture. nice try.
  10. SCS787 made a great post on diamond club. he asked in which excess outfielders in AZL would the sox be interested in.... something like a list of 5-7 players. good question.
  11. QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:22 AM) If all he's on is a minor league contract then it wouldn't be the worst thing to have him down in AAA. Maybe some time in the minors to build confidence could be a good thing. i just don't know, i have this strong bias against him, so i am the wrong person to answer this. sorry
  12. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:17 AM) I wouldn't mind seeing BelisaRio back as a spring training invite, he was pitching a role he wasn't used to out of the bullpen and he had a lot of bad luck. at a very low salary, an invite, no guarantees, but i will still try to fill his position with another pitcher. a strong maybe.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:19 AM) Kemp was (again) an MVP-quality bat the 2nd half last season. Unfortunately, his defense has deteriorated to the point where some of that value is eroded, but he's much more on an impact player than Crawford/Ethier at this point...despite the injuries over the last 2-3 seasons. Which of course means the Dodgers will hold out for less of a salary subsidy going the other way compared to Ethier/Crawford, too. and pls explain how that changes anything i said??? no offense intended.
  14. QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:06 AM) more will happen after dec 2. we/ll see what teams will offer contracts to players. dang, i totally forgot about Dec 2. i am getting all caught up here. i am not even following my Blackhawks.
  15. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 01:55 AM) This could be a possibility. Some sort of Danks for Victorino swap might just make some crazy sense. I still prefer the Sox looked for a better option in LF but if it meant trading Danks I would not complain. A move like that actually saves the Sox 1.5M that can be added to the roughly 20M they have left to spend and maybe sign a starter like Volquez and another reliever or two. I don't know how possible that scnerio is, just throwing it out there as an example. crazy as it sounds, it just might work. question, would Bos do it. i like it.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 01:55 AM) The problem is that Ramirez for Kemp and "Thome cash subsidy" opens up such a big hole at SS that whatever we gained from Kemp in LF would be cancelled out by the loss of Ramirez at SS. If it was 2016 and Tim Anderson was close to ready (and it was more of a sure thing he would be able to handle the position defensively)...then I'd be for it. The problem is that going with this "close to all-in but not quite 100%" approach it's pretty much forcing us to compete this year. And would Kemp even be happy playing LF in Chicago? It would all depend on how much money the Dodgers will willing to include...if Kemp could be paid essentially like Melky Cabrera for the next four years instead of in the $20 million range, it would be much more feasible. kemp, crawford, ethier it is all the same here. they are huge contracts that the sox can do without. however, again, if the dodgers are willing to add to that pck to entice the sox, that is another thing. if that trade does goes down, i guess Semien is the player at SS. re Tim Anderson, i think and maybe i am crazy, but i think he can handle the offensive side of the majors. the other side, well more grooming is needed. remember it is the Dodgers who needs the sox, not the other way around.
  17. QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 01:37 AM) How does that work money wise? He doesn't get what he was set to get in arbitration right? i wouldn't think so, it was like he was release in his arb yr.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 02:02 AM) First significant gamble of the LaRussa Era out in the desert. For a player who profiles almost like a DH war-wise, he'd better have a helluva bat (see Abreu/Victor Martinez). with stewart there who is in charge Larussa or Stewart.
  19. QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 01:08 AM) So which DBacks outfielder do we trade for this year? They have Tomas, Pollack, Trumbo, Ross, Inciarte, and my personal favorite David Peralta. If they can get Trumbo for super cheap he could be a solid platoon partner with LaRoche. By super cheap I mean a bunch of nobodies. this is a good post, too bad you didn't posted it on the main sox page. interesting question. edit ..... i too will go for David Peralta.... now the question is at what cost?
  20. QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 12:25 AM) I still think that the Dodgers are motivated to do 3 things: 1) Acquire a SS until Seager is ready 2) Break the logjam in their very crowded outfield, by moving a couple of veterans from the group of Crawford, Kemp and Ethier. 3) Reduce the payroll a little. That seems to be the least important factor I don't see them trading Pederson or Seager. Whether or not those objectives match up with what R. H. wants to do, or what we think he should want to do, is the question, isn't it? ref #2 how do you reduce the logjam if you don't sweeten the pkg?? #3 by default, reducing the payroll but reducing the outfield. #1 they want a good SS who may be able to put some offensive numbers, that is why I am thinking of Alexei. I also have another idea but I really don't want to go there, esp without proof.
  21. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 12:45 AM) Ya never know. Boston's pitching staff is very thin for a team trying to win next year. Even if they signed Lester and traded for Hamels, they would still need pitching badly. IMO, they need to sign/trade for at least three good starters if that staff is going to help Boston become a winner. not unless we really entice them as the dodgers are trying to entice the sox to take 1 of their outfielders.
  22. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:43 PM) I think we could argue this until the cows come home. Ultimately, the Sox have to ask for Seager or Pederson. I think the Dodgers will turn their noses up at that, and no deal will be worked out. In that regard, I hope I'm wrong because I'd personally be OK with the Sox not competing for another year to acquire a talent like one of those two and I think Hahn would feel the same way. those dang freaking cows, what a bunch of hussies. but again all joking aside, I think that sox are in a right position to take on a big contract and still use that player. the only way for the Dodgers to start clearing out that logjam it to package it. they really do not have a choice in that. now for the players in play. lets take a look at the position the sox have avail. only 1 corner outfield. the sox of the big contract outfielders. the least amount of yrs is what 3 yrs?? if the sox ask for Pederson, when will he play in the outfield?? you have avi, eaton, and the other outfielder. the sox have adam at dh for 2 yrs. there is no room. that is why I keep saying the best player especially for the sox at this time will be seager.
  23. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:23 PM) Quintana hold more value to teams like Royals, Marlins, or Padres than Red Sox. The Red Sox wants to land the big fish. Lester or Hamel. The only pitcher they will unload the farm for from us is Sale, who we shouldn't look to trade at this point. and that brings me up to something I wasn't even thinking about. could all those extra players Bos been acquiring is to replenish what they will need to make a trade for Hamels??
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:20 PM) For the record, I'm not disagreeing with what you guys are saying, but it's a hell of a lot harder to justify trading those insanely talented prospects for a shortstop when the rest of their team is still very good. I'm not saying they won't, and I'm not saying the Sox shouldn't ask for those guys. What I am saying is that I think there will be other shortstops available, either through free agency or available via trade, that will cost them less and will replicate similar numbers to Alexei Ramirez. If the Dodgers offered, hypothetically here, Zach Lee to the Twins for Eduardo Escobar, with the Twins girth of offensive prospects and a guy like Danny Santana who is also capable of playing shortstop, do you think the Twins are in a position to turn that down? Maybe they negotiate the price up a bit, but then the Dodgers have a control of the player for a lot longer, don't pay as much, and have a similar though inferior player without giving up one of their top prospects. That is primarily why I don't see any way a deal is worked out between the Dodgers and the Sox that involves Alexei Ramirez. His value to the Sox right now is too great. They are on the verge of competing and dealing your starting shortstop for a package of prospects just doesn't seem to be the best use of resources. If you get the right player, you make it in a second and ask questions later, but I don't foresee that as a possibility. a great informative post. good work. now, my only counter or addition is they were talking about a pkg for the sox to be entice, so I am assuming that one of the other players will be one of their heavy laden contracts that is choking them.
  25. QUOTE (Fantl916 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:13 PM) Super wild guest, one most won't like I'd assume, but here goes: Boston gets Quintana, low minors prospect or two Chicago gets Swihart, Owens, Renaudo, Nava why???
