So when we're right around .500 in July, what do we do?
LDF replied to ChiSoxJon's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 05:06 PM) I'm with you. JR isn't doing a full rebuild so the next best option is to replace players that aren't performing regardless of the Sox record come July 31. I hoping for Saladino to hit well enough to stick as the SS of the future so the Sox can move Anderson to CF in Charlotte to become the future CF of the Sox hopefully after the '16 season. Eventually Melky takes the DH role when LaRoche is gone and who knows, with a little luck Jacob May might hit well enough at Charlotte to eventually replace Melky in LF. Still need to find a power bat for RF and preferably left handed so maybe the Sox can find that at the deadline or next off season. Despite the lack of signing a FA OF, the Sox made some really nice improvements so far this off season. I really like were they are right now and the direction they are headed. Imo, they aren't a contender yet but are much closer than they were when the season ended. dang, you really thought this out...... many thanks and great work. i would like to add, when all is said and done, the sox can get the payroll to their normal state, an addition of a key player occasionally via Fa list and then there will be a need to start talking about the pitching core. now i am looking at 2 yrs from now. -

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 03:54 PM) I'm a Sox fan for life, for better or worse, just painful lately That being said I don't want to add any big money FAs now, no one worthy of a pick or money that's left welcome of the club for life. but here is a chance to think about it, chg and go with the city fav child, the northsiders. less frustration involve. if not, then you are doom like me and many others. and i know you are not a newbie. but for me, if i had to choose 2 position i would improve on now, i guess it would be the of'er and the SP. the SS would be nice, but i can deal with SS and the DH as weak hitting or no hitting, and at SS, saladino will provide great Defense. -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 05:49 PM) Maybe it's just me but Frazier's demeanor reminds me alot of PK. Laid back, calm, cool and yet not afraid to speak his mind. yeah you mention a name i wasn't thinking about, but i can agree. the one player i was thinking about was maybe a earlier player, they referred to him as a kickback to the old ST Cards team on the dirt kids, never washing the uniforms and sox falling down to the ankles .... but he would put 110% into the game. oh well, PK is a good example.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 05:02 PM) .500 at the deadline in this division likely has the Sox in contention. i was thinking of this the other day, in general the NL central and the AL central are the tops in each league. looking at the AL, i wonder what kind of record a team needs to make the playoff??? -

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 04:57 PM) If we're not contending in July, Danks and LaRoche are the first to go, LaRoche has been shopped aggressively but I am patient on him still, Danks has been shopped in the past and I do not want him here in '17, so either get value for him or let him walk in the Fall. I'm all for a '17 rotation of Sale-Fulmer-Q-Rodon-Johnson ahhh no offense intended, but i think Danks contract end at the end of the 2016 season. i may be wrong. -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 04:51 PM) Yeah I know but at that point in the year it wouldn't be a lot. We did kick in cash to get rid of Dunn as well in 2014. but damn it, i know i am going to sound really sappy here, and maybe some poster will have ammo to make fun, but i can see this team on the cusp of doing great things. esp if the sox will invest in an of'er and sp. then i can see the domino effect happen towards the positive side. damn it, the owners has to give in. the fans want it to happen, to make this team better. sorry, mini rant there. -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 04:46 PM) I don't think they would do a full rebuild til at least summer of 2017 in my opinion. But if I had to guess who would get moved if things are bad this summer: maybe a couple relievers, one of the catchers (if they're producing), Danks if a team wants rotation depth for a couple months (looking at a team like the Dodgers or Cardinals if there are injuries to their rotations). a nice idea, but not unless the sox kicks in money for that salary. -

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 04:40 PM) Sox have a lot of talent that can net a lot of return (Sale, Abreu, Frazier, Eaton, Quintana, Lawrie, Melky, Robertson) but are in MLB's toughest division with an under achieving cast year after year. If this doesn't change a fire sale should be in discussion as B/R pointed out, saying White Sox are next time to undergo full rebuild. If Sox do start rebuilding yet again this summer, who stays, who goes, and what is the return? Let's hope this isn't where we're headed. this will be the 2nd yr of a 3yr plan. the real question should be, what would you do as a fan, if the sox does not add any more important pieces to fix this team, come ST??? -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 04:39 PM) Just because I'm cruel, I'm going to throw the names of Victorino, Sizemore, Venable, McLouth and DeJesus out there now in preparation of the cubs re-signing Fowler. Sorry, the caffeine from my morning coffee hasn't hit yet. many thanks for a dose of the absurd. ..... i love it. thanks for the laugh

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 04:29 PM) It isn't a "dumbass narrative." Have you watched White Sox baseball for the last several years? Do you get the impression that when things get tough, our club is able to stand up to that or turn things around when they start going sideways? this is a great post. this idea of piling up on a poster is really getting old, the quality of this board comes from posters with a difference of opinion .... many posters have a right to have their opinions.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 06:54 AM) That part of the quote really sticks out for me. IMHO, that's something a clubhouse leader would say. damn, what you highlighted..... that tells me he is a player who is coming to play. nice catch.

QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 11:00 AM) I'm guessing that's exactly what the White Sox are figuring out. What is the best deal for them? Losing 2 middle prospects to get someone like Ethier? Losing one potential top 3 system guy with the comp pick for Fowler? What about the salary coming in of the new player, is he worth the price, does it still allow for more flexibility to add another player? I assume they will come up with an answer soon. Fowler seems the most logical to me, but ya never know what these remaining FA's are asking for in salary. You would imagine the Sox should get a good deal on whoever they bring in if it is a FA but I thought they had Cespedes coming here and I was wrong on that. I just don't see many trade options left at this point and why I think Fowler should and will be the guy. The Sox may make a move like Jackson instead seeing as there is no pick attached and still leaves money for a SP upgrade or maybe bring in Desmond at SS too. for me, i would add Khris Davis from the Brewers and Brett Gardner from the yanks. 2 different types of players and the cost would be different to get them, but i would really love to see what would be the cost of getting them.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 06:17 AM) I feel like people are SEVERELY overrating the value of the compensation pick in this situation. Yeah, the Sox need to build their system, but they also need to win NOW while the core is cheap and young. For every Trout that gets picked 25th or so overall, there's also 25 Aaron Poreda's who flame out and never amount to anything significant. The bottom line in my opinion is that the Sox need to win now, and unless the guy that they plan on picking with the compensation pick is a lock (or as close to a lock that a draft pick can be) to contributing soon, I don't mind giving up the pick for the sure thing in Fowler who can help the team out significantly in the present. i honestly think a majority of the posters see it that way. i guess some can not relate to loosing that pick for someone like Flowers but could under stand that for someone like gordon or upton. the pick can be a real nice prospect, IF he develops as hope.... but that is for some time in the future like 3 or 4 yrs from now. the sox needs to fix this team now. nice post.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 02:13 PM) Just calling him out for his previous comments which contradict his latest comments. Since you are here to offer advice, why don't you take your own? i should not point anything out, b/c i am sure i have pissed many on this board. but as i see this, and i can relate to the on going battle, it is too petty and i can use more adjective to express it, even further. this is a lot like how some criticize my lack of english. both of you posters are great posters in my opinion. i have learned alot from these discussion and then i stop reading them. i know i skipped something, but oh well. again, you both are great posters. peace

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 12:55 AM) I feel like signing Fowler now and losing the pick is panic move in my book. They struck out and had no other choice. Honestly at this point I think I'd rather just keep the top 30 pick and payroll. panic move ? i really don't think it would look as a panic move. i see the move as being an important move, loosing out on the comp pick, while it would or could hurt, it is a price of doing business. when the pitchers and the top hitters were sign, the rest of the fa's will start to fall.

QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 03:15 AM) Bulls were never in the race for a championship this season and they weren't going to miss the playoffs. D- Hoiberg just strikes me as a puppet for GarPax. Doesn't really seem to have any strong opinions, and will do whatever they want. many thanks. that is what i was looking for..

Ventura: LaRoche will have to earn his spot in Spring Training

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 09:46 PM) If you aren't going to believe them when they say he needs to earn a job and the only answer you will accept is he is going to be paid $13 million so he is going to play no matter what, why would any of these posts interest you or bother you? i guess it is the same reason why i am a die hard sox fan...... i am a masochist -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 09:01 PM) I seriously doubt the Sox extend Melky. Frazier and Lawrie would make sense but both the team and players have to have the desire to stay together. If the player performs well and likes the team then surely there would be mutual interest. We'll see what happens over the next two years. excellent, so for me, i will sit back, and if the sox does pick up someone viable, cheer on my sox.

Ventura: LaRoche will have to earn his spot in Spring Training
LDF replied to Sockin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 08:54 PM) Huh? Of course LaRoche will be on the team, and should be to see if he can regain some of his old form. The Sox are paying him the 13M regardless so theres nothing wrong with seeing if theres anything left in the tank during ST. If a player out-performs him in ST then LaRoche becomes a LH bench bat with power potential late in games as well as serving as a quality backup to 1B. If LaRoche continues to regress during the season and the Sox need his roster spot, then they can release him but there's no point in releasing him now. 50 at bats, in spring training or whatever it is, will not be enuf to judge anyone. the point of regressing is also how to gage it, when he is horrible in the beginning of every season. so he is on the team, the fans should accept this, and see if there is some improvement come june, mid june. that is all i am trying to point out in how i see this. i can't help it, it just doesn't make sense to what RV is saying. -

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 08:21 PM) LaRoche's performance in ST will determine his playing time to start the season. I would imagine that even if LaRoche earns playing time to start the season, he will have to continue to earn it to stay in the lineup. LaRoche will surely be on a short leash and understably so. The Sox could really use his power potential from the left side so hopefully he can regain some of what he had prior to '15. so as i see this, this being written out and thought of logically, laroche is and will be on the team, he will not be let go during ST and his continue presence may depend on his defense, with an occasional playing time. that is the bare minimum. so again, it is all bluster coming from the FO on laroche just to appease the fans. -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 08:16 PM) Lawrie, Frazier and Melky are free agents after the '17 season. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. yeah and i would really be apprehensive, if i was the sox FO to extend melky or even frazier. now with frazier, it will depend on how he preforms. yet, i should say, i should see how all 3 preforms.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 05:57 PM) Neither Turner nor Beck have anywhere near the credentials of E Johnson. They need to develop depth, but it also appears they don't trust Johnson (and he's not a Cooper guy). Maybe he's the one they should trade for a young OF. turner, beck, ej, will do great for depth, the sox need to add a SP who needs to redevelop his value. then have the other 3 provide depth and if injury, can start. too bad on the sox not able to carry one of them as an extra.... it all depends on the full roster. 11 pitchers going north?

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 08:04 PM) Good on Robin for coming out being blunt about LaRoche needing to earn playing time. i agree that it is posturing .... reason is 13 mil worth. but that aside, what will be the final decision, his get up and go, his stats in ST??? he starts of horrible for the first 2 months of play. so how will they judge him?? that is another reason i am saying it is just posturing from the sox FO. -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 07:33 PM) I think there are variables to take into consideration for players when they decide to accept or turn down QO's. Age, previous years performance and the upcoming FA market. Desmond: obviously should have taken the QO. He's been statistically trending downward so taking the 1 year QO to try and improve for FA would have been the smarter idea. Plus there was a big market for SS's either. Rasmus: smart move accepting. Market was flooded with OF talent so he decided to take the guaranteed money for one more year to bet on himself getting a multi-year contract next year where there will not be as much OF talent to compete with. excellent break down and i really do see some fa's accepting the QO. maybe not next yr, since it will be a somewhat thin fa class. now the 2018, if the system stays as is, i bet they will be more accepting the QO. now i have been trying to see whom on the sox will be fa's?

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 02:25 PM) Poll: Who here likes Hillary Clinton for President and why do you think she'd make a great Commander In Chief? i will vote for her, but i still will want to know who will be the vice-pres. reason, better than anything the Rep party is putting out. at this point, the rep party anything is like watching SNL.
