QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 03:55 PM) There's really nothing wrong with giving him a shot in spring training. It's not like they've guaranteed him a spot in the rotation. Everyone take a step back from the ledge. and you have a point, i too have no problem for a shot, but not at the expense of getting a SP of note.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 08:18 PM) Anyone ever do any property purchases through tax auctions? Any tips or warnings? it is very tricky. 1. get a idea of what a house of your dimension is worth in that neighborhood. 2. get an idea of property taxes for that area. 3. if you can, or if they will provide a walk thru or disclosure on any damages, ie: electrical, water, pipes, termites, cracks in the foundation, age of roof, leaks. 4. see if anything is or was grandfather in, 5. is if you will need to pay taxes past, future and present fees and taxes. 6. come up with a price and stick to it..... you may have to walk, but if you do, then walk away. you will be competing with others like you as well as realty agents.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 02:14 PM) I don't think he's the odd man out in LA. I think they end up moving Guerrero this spring. interesting thought process, it does make sense. but if the sox does go looking, the sox will work from a weak hand. the Dodgers can wait, unlike the sox who will need to act, now.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 01:01 PM) If you didn't believe the Sox had a chance at signing those players because the price was exorbitant, and I agree, then what's the problem? Why would you get incensed if no important signing is coming when you didn't expect the Sox to sign any of the big FA's in the first place? Honestly, I do not see where you're coming from. I have not seen any comments from the front office that were mis-leading, not one. If you could provide links to comments made by the FO that were mis-leading, it would help me better understand where you're coming from. Going into the off season, did fans really believe the Sox were going to be able to fill all 6 holes that were 3B, 2B, SS, RF, DH and C? Frazier, Lawrie, Navarro and Avila were added to the roster along with Saladino taking over at SS. That's alot of changes right there and Hahn has said they are still looking and at this point I see no reason to doubt him since the off season is not over. Keep in mind though, he's not saying they WILL add another bat, just that they are still looking so lets take his comments for what they truely are and not what we want them to mean. debate is a great form of conversing on any topic.... the topic is sox and the board it soxtalk. i will admit that you make a nice counter. i just want them, the sox FO to finish what they started and if the salary this yrs goes to 150, then so be it, at the end of the season, 28 mil will come off the books. it is their fault that the sox has nothing of quality to offer up in a trade or bring up from the minors. they spew out words and nonsense in their the usual weak attempt to deflect any criticism from the crack management team, the Sox FO. i am just tired of the sox FO taking or looking for short cuts and all those wasted yrs and frustration in believing that they, the owners will make it or do the job the right way. ref the bold of all those positions to fix, it is thru their fault that this team is in the condition they are in, it falls squarely on their shoulders, i feel no pity, but i will feel incensed if they used that as an excuse to not finishing the job, b/c it would take money or fix it.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 04:27 AM) http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/splits/_/id/...rique-hernandez In light of Kendrick signing... To be our righty dh platoon with LaRoche. Or he plays more in the field with Garcia platooning...although the ideal situation would be supersub, DH against lhp and would require addition of Fowler/Jackson with Avi traded or at Charlotte. The Dodgers already have Utley, Hernandez, Micah, Alex Guerrero (at first I looked at him but the splits aren't as favorable), Thompson, Van Slyke, Ethier, Crawford....huge logjam. Hernandez carries incredible positional versatility, a 1.215 ops in 78 career at-bats versus lefties, a 346 OBP and 836 ops last year in 200+ abs but no starting role in LA now in 2016 because of Kendrick and Utley. He was perceived to be good enough to start in CF, LF or 2b. Actually, he has played every position except catcher, 1b and pitcher. And he won't cost Adams or a top prospect...plus, LA knows our system intimately from the Frazier deal so a deal could be put in place quickly. http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp?sid=m...itting/2015/ALL He's got the Trayce anomaly going...801 career mlb ops in over 300 at bats vs. 722 in milb https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrique_Hernández_(baseball) See last paragaph with Dodgers...plus, you have to like a guy who can dress up in a banana suit i am in total agreement with BS13 on this, this would be a great investment for the sox .... and i like the idea of the cost will not be a adams or any one higher. nice

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 01:18 PM) I don't know, this doesn't seem like such a bad deal for Kendrick. Sure he turned down 15.7M for one year but he got a two year 20M deal instead. For a 32 year old player that is beginning to decline, I think there's something to be said about two years of financial security over one year. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 01:30 PM) What? He's effectively getting paid $4.3M for 2017, that's pretty horrible. i can see both side of this discussion. but i can also see how and why there might be some more players accepting the QO, if the QO offer system is still there in the future. but the age of 32 is and will be the wildcard in any future QO going forward.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 05:49 AM) "In the future" this likely won't be the case at all and teams won't get compensation for free agents. interesting, you don't this this will be the case??
-
QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 05:24 AM) Big Time. For the first time we saw players taking QO. Think in future many more older players begin to take. i don't know about older players, i think this was a great idea from their agents to take the 1 yr QO, gamble on themselves that they will stay healthy and go into another fa season that is not loaded with upper elite talent. another yr may be 2018 when there is a nice group of fa that will be available.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 04:00 AM) What do people expect Hahn to day? As someone that wants them to add another impact bat, I was thrilled with the tweets that came out. It was very promising, as they could have easily said "heavy lifting is done, we are confident this is the group we have for ST". The LaRoche stuff was fascinating as well, as it seems he will have to earn playing time this year and if he looks lost in ST, who even knows if he makes the roster. that is promising. but i have a problem of sorts with this info, not what you provided but on laroche. i remembered that laroche is a horrible starter in his career. well i look it up on baseball ref and on his splits. i also did the career splits. his march / april stats are really bad. so my question is, i wonder what standard, what baseline will the coaches use to gage for this decision, esp during ST??

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 04:41 AM) Since Q actually posted the differences, what do you actually have that makes them similar, other than their salary apparently. and of course.... you always add great insight into everything. i am done.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 04:10 AM) Turner is 24 and the former 15th overall prospect in baseball. Paulino was 30 and not a Top 100 prospect. Turner likely won't be all that hot - but the Sox are the best team to see him succeeding with thanks to Don Cooper and Herm Schneider. and i remember all the hype on Paulino going into the season. including the 1.7 mil on his salary.... so with all that stat you provided, what does this prove...... nothing, there is still a possibility of turner now getting fix or maybe not . now for others who wish to add anything else, let me further explain, what i am talking about is adding another sp to the mix, for an insurance policy.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 04:03 AM) Maybe I missed it but when did the Sox say they were all in? I don't recall seeing that in anything I've read this off season. I've seen it mentioned by a fan or two on this board but nothing from the Sox FO. The only misleading statements were made by writers and people on twitter. It's the fans fault for taking speculations and rumors and reading more into them then there really was. Case in point, the Cespedes thread is over 400 pages long and it started from a Garfien tweet. Don't get me wrong, I had fun discussing the possibility with everyone here but I also said few times in that thread that fans should not get their hopes up by assuming anything. I believe the Sox were in on Cespedes to a point but look at what it took for the Mets to bring Cespedes back to NY, a place he wanted to return to. How is it the front offices fault that Heyward wanted to play for the cubs, Cespedes wanted to stay with the Mets, Gordon wanted to stay with KC and Upton didn't want to play for the Sox? It's not front offices fault that fans mis-led their self. That's on the fans for buying into the media hype. lets clarify one thing, ok. you and i talked about the top 3 or 4 elite hitters, i felt i needed to add c. davis to that list. i never thought the sox could or would sign any, b/c of the price being too exorbitant. i also mention that in that huge thread. so i guess we are on the same wave length as to cespy. so loosing out on cespy, i am totally indifferent to it. but if they, hahn and the FO, is trying to fib on the truth, i have a problem. if they want to mislead the fans, i have a problem. it is a creditability issue for me. now i am having this feeling as no important signing is coming, now that has me incense. fix this team, do not go cheap and go into the season with the team as is. nor go into the season with pitching or OF reclamation experiments on the roster. this will tell me, it is all about the money.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 01:20 AM) Good question abt why they haven't drafted hitters very well (unlike pitchers). Hahn acknowledges the gap but says they are working on it. Talks abt Steverson should help that. BPA who at their selection, esp in the early rounds were probably pitchers. can someone ask if they think Fulmer is a SP or a RP ?????

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 01:14 AM) Guilty of mis-leading fans by not discussing negotiations they are having with free agents? Arent the Sox known for " flying under the radar" when it comes to these things? Sorry, but the fans were mis-led by the media writers , not the Sox FO. guilty of misleading on the all in statement and letting it fester or morph into something other, if they really had no interest, anyone, i am sure they would have made a statement of other options available. cryptic innuendo's is more along the line of what i am talking about..... again this is me and my suspicions of the attendance of soxfest and fans purchasing season tickets.

QUOTE (spiderman @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 12:43 AM) I'm sure they do want to see what he can do, but it's hard to see him displacing John Danks and his salary. Erik Johnson is probably the most at risk to lose a starting rotation spot. and if EJ has a relapse on forgetting on how to pitch, who is to step in ???? remember Hector Noesi and his pitching in 2015 .... and the org having high hopes the org had on him based on his 2014 performance??

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 12:26 AM) Cespedes wanted to stay in NY, Gordon wanted to stay in KC, Heyward turned down more money to sign with a team that had made it to the NLCS and it was rumored that Upton didn't want to play for the Sox. As far as I can tell, the Sox never had a chance with any of them. Why would a player be willing to sign while the prices were low? Doesn't sound very motivating to a FA player. Judging by the money spent and the contracts signed, I doubt the prices were ever low in the first place. Hahn never came out and said the Sox were only willing to go three years, that was the media. Hahn said all along that the Sox would have to get creative to be able to sign a FA and that's why we heard rumors early in the off season about LaRoche being on the market. It's not like the Sox have never signed players to longer than three years so I don't understand why fans cannot get past that media rumor. Hahn came out today and confirmed the Sox were willing to go beyond 3 years and yet fans are still bringing it up. Makes no sense. It's not the front office's fault the fans got caught with their pants down making assumptions and believing everything they read on the internet. you make a good counter, but during all the hoopla of cespy and teams courting him, it was always assumed the the sox were in the running, their was a rumor of 3 yrs contract and then the rumor of a 5 yr contract. 3yr being that of the mets and the 5 yrs being that of the nat'l. so in essence lack of any information or further input from the FO, plus the comment of all in.... they the FO was guilty of misleading the fans. this is my assumption and if i am correct in my reasoning, then the next several questions is 1. why and 2. did they expect the fans to figure this out??
-
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 11:48 PM) When the FO went "all in" the fans assumed they would go "all in" and find a good outfielder. that is the fans fault and i am including me as that group. i was the owners biggest supporters here, 10+ yrs ago, but all the BS they kept on shoveling and we the fans kept on buying it.... i guess with my age, i am sour on that experience. the sox FO said they are all in..... looking back, what a bunch of Shiite and we swallowed it. edit..... when i say we... i am putting myself front and center. pass the mustard.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 10:40 PM) Absolutely agreed. Cespedes asking price and desire to stay in NY never made much sense for the Sox and yet fans want to blame the front office for not signing Cespedes. It's the fans fault for assuming the Sox would sign Cespedes, not the FO. ok, for me, this was a done topic in some ways, but when Hahn came out and said that 3 yr deal and all that, that mean all the rumor chatter of last week and hopes of the sox being in the running..... that mean they were never in the running. esp if the sox never intended to propose a contract of a 3 - yr deal or a contract of longer yrs. all along the sox stuck to their internal agreement of what they were going to do. in other words, no OF'er, no additional moves.... they are done improving the team. do not get fixated on the salary demands of the contract.... but look at the whole thing.
-
QUOTE (thedoctor @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 08:44 PM) wait, did he use "jacob turner" and "fully healthy" in the same sentence? ok, then. shades of all the BS that was said about Felipe Paulino and the fans back then bought it .... hook, line and sinker
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 10:27 PM) I had no problem with the Sox not paying the exorbitant salary demands. Cespedes seemed to want to stay with the Mets anyway. If we have money to spend let's see who is still out there as we move closer to ST and maybe pick up a couple solid players albeit not the spectacular splash some want with one big name so in essence getting a what, a 5 tier fa of'er to man the position. get maybe a reclamation project to see if that player can get to what once a promising career, in other words go cheap..... i really had a lot of that since the JR group purchase the team....
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 09:08 PM) When KW mouthpiece Bob Nightengale reports it though, it is a little more believable. I do believe they were only willing to do a 3 year base deal with any of these particular guys. if the sox never thought of a 3 yr deal with cespy.... then the sox where never in the any discussion, serious discussion with cespy agent in coming to chi. there was never any chatter of the sox and any of cespy people.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 04:51 PM) While this is true, I think the idea of the Rays trading Desmond is at least possible. Not saying it will happen but Rogers is right when he says the Rays have too many outfielders and trading Jennings makes the most sense. well i am extremely apprehensive in getting Jennings. his defensive stats, i will let the guys who are way better at than i to break it down. but offensively, no... i look at the 13 and 14 stats, the splits and his hitting vs rhp, is almost the same. around the 235 range.... no way will this will be a nice pickup. well at least for what i know in baseball stats.

Ventura: "White Sox have potential to be dangerous"
LDF replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (bear_brian @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 07:57 PM) I am older than 65 and have followed the Sox since Luis Aparicio's rookie season in 1956. When they won the pennant in 1959 it ended a 40 year pennant drought. My grandfather - who was my biggest influence in my becoming a Sox fan - had endured those 40 years, and I remember how bad I felt for him having to wait that long. Little did I know that I would then endure a 46 year wait for the next AL pennant (but I also got the joy of a World Series championship!). Bottom line is that we older fans are unfortunately very accustomed to the lack of championships. The only real difference between our suffering and those of our North side brethren is that we at least have enjoyed a fair number of good teams along the way, although not lately. It is truly a shame but, at this point, the only thing that will change our collective pessimism is success - similar to what the Hawks are doing, or to what the Bulls accomplished during the Jordan years. nice post, but i agree with you, we as fans have waited and as young fans lived with the coined phrase of "what till next yr". but you nailed it, we as chi sports fans have had the bulls, hawks, even bears superbowl to help in the sports excitement. but the 90's of the wasted talent of the sox.....
