Will Sox be buyers, not sellers, at the trade deadline?
LDF replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) This is crazy talk. If the team is in a position to make the playoffs and then they traded all of their assets, no one would go to the games after July 31st and the season ticket renewals would continue to decrease. At some point in time, you just have to bite the bullet and keep guys, even if you could get good returns for them. You just don't sell the farm this year for an upgrade. Frankly, this team is a lot of fun right now, but it just doesn't seem that they are going to be competitive in July. I think the offense will hit a wall eventually and they'll lose a few games. But, if they're 5-10 games over .500 come the end of July, selling really will not be an option. Great point, lets be honest ...... who would've thought that this team would have done 1/2 as good ? this team to really fun and I hate it that I do not live in chi, so I can go the games. yeah, they might hit that wall and like Hahn said, if they are close, they have players to be buyers at the trade deadline. we do have a logjam with potential infielders to do something. good or bad, its going to be a good to great yr. -
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 07:12 PM) I'm a believer in Hoffman, but if the Sox took him over Aiken, I would be disappointed. I too am a fan of Hoffman. If Kolek is taken then it would be Hoffman. For the draft people who know about the over slot money and signing, can you guys help me with a question. First my confession, I have a bid dislike for anything name Boras. however first Rodon is picked by the sox at #3, we can offer him how much ? does that mean he or his agent can't ask for more money than the allotted money for that pick, so if they do, we either pay it of get a comp pick right.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 08:04 PM) It's not silly in a vacuum, but there are two things about how teams usually do it that are important: (1) it's nearly always to an easier position, and (2) it's almost never done until they're absolutely sure it needs to be done Nearly all of the exceptions to this rule come when there's a roster crunch, and those are most often considered temporary moves. So, the fact that Ravelo was moved down the spectrum at such a young age is probably indicative that they think he really seriously can't cut it at third, or else they'd have given him much more time to improve. you know, that is a good point you made, thanks. Rangel is one of my fav players, I still would like to see if he can convert to being a outfielder.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 08:42 PM) Moving a guy to 1b from 3b because the team doesn't have 1b options would be an incredibly silly move. Let's just say it this way. Maybe there's a chance some people are right and Ravelo could move back to 3b, but he's in the White Sox organization and the White Sox organization gave up on him as a fielder at 3b. It therefore seems extremely unlikely that they're going to decide to move him back there after giving up on him at 3rd. That's their call and even if they're wrong, they're the ones who get to make it. you made it sound as moving a player to another position so he can play was a silly move. all I kept on saying is baseball teams do it a lot. move player to other position due lack of fielding, to take advantage of his bat, to develop him for a position which may not have prospects. you mention that it was silly ...... I never mention moving him back to 3b ..... that is the best I can remember.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 03:58 AM) It being freezing sure doesn't help I am going to ask of those posters who are way smarter than I to answer this, is it the weather or is it the pitching stress of learning different types of pitches at the young age ?

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 11:08 AM) If Dunn continues to hit well and has an average around .250 near the deadline, there will be teams asking about him. If there is a team in need of a left-handed power bat for the rest of the season for about $6 million, he'll be traded. Don't worry about his previous body of work. What teams will be looking at is his body of work in 2014. Besides, in 2012 and 2013 he hit 75 HRs and knocked in 182 runs. Trading Dunn for the sake of trading him and expecting a lot of value is what I was discussing. you are right is how you are thinking. To say lets trade this player or that and build the farm, is where, at least for me, a problem. the season needs to play itself out, however lets see where we are and the value of the player is to a) the other team and b) the value he has to our team. -
Is it me or is there and ungodly amount of injuries this yr .... esp with the pitchers.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 10:59 PM) I've said it before, but here's how our offseason should look: 1) Sign the best free agent starter within reason 2) Sign best free agent left-handed bat within reason 3) Trade for legit starting catcher 4) Shore up bullpen as needed The first two items only cost money and we should have plenty available. The third item will cost some prospects, but our system is much improved. There's no guarantee we accomplish all these moves obviously, but it's definitely within the realm of possibility. I strongly agree with a lot of poster here in this thread, esp you and Rowand. lets not mortgage our future, even thou we may not be as flush as we thought we were. this short season really identify the glaring hole in our system. who know maybe Johnson and Paulino may make a turn-around and come back. your # 1, 2, 4 I agree, but I don't think we should trade but sign a fa for the catcher position. even if its for 2 or 3 yrs. the price of trading may be too steep of a price to pay. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 09:12 PM) But they still haven't come up with a way to get around going over your draft allotment. The first pick slot is $7,922,100. The White Sox total for all draft picks has to be under $9,509,700. So if the Sox were to draft Rodon, and give him #1 pick money, they would have about $1.6 million to spend on the entire rest of their draft picks, otherwise they would face the following sanctions. $1.6 million would get the Sox something like their second round pick and their 5th round pick, and no other signings over $100,000. In theory, they could go up to $9,985,184.99 and just pay a tax. That amounts to about an extra $450,000, or about the price of a 4th round draft pick. After that, they are giving up draft picks, and that won't happen. but when you have a boras client, boras is going to try to max his salary.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 09:47 PM) That's much more likely than the idea they'd move a prospect in A ball (and a young-for-level one at that) from third to first because the current MLB team needed 1B help. You just don't do that (the latter), just like you don't draft for organizational need, because the players are so far away from MLB anyway, among other reasons. We'd all love if he was a competent defensive 3B. The Sox don't believe he is. yes the sox drafted him, then thought about it and for whatever reason moved him over to 1b. I believe that didn't they experimented with Viciedo there ? all I am saying is for whatever reason he was moved to 1b and with Jose being there we can have him backup / dh / or even move to the outfield.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) But he simply can't. You can't get around the new draft spending rules that easily any more. If he falls 1 spot because of Boras, he either goes back to school another year, potentially costing himself millions down the road, or he gets drafted 1 spot later, costing him well over $1 million right away. If he falls past the first few picks, then there becomes literally no reason to draft him because he coudln't be signed. drafting and giving over-slot money is there and been done. per the CBA after the first 10 rounds, bonuses of overslot count against the budget of the first 10 rounds -- there are ways to work around the former issue. Even though it's the first year of the new draft rules, there were already multiple organizations finding creative ways to redistribute the risk and money allotted to them.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 09:39 PM) He can probably get 4 years and $80 million. does anyone remember Hahn or the sox org talking about the rebuilding stage. what, if any, were their ideas ? I know getting Jose A may boost up their time-table in rebuilding. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 08:24 PM) The question is the answer. There's a 26 year old org guy there. If they thought Ravelo could do it competently, he'd be there. Heck if they needed filler they could just switch Curley and Ravelo on the field and cover 1B. The fact that they don't tells me what I need to know. I will play devil advocate, when the sox moved him to 1b, the org did not have a good prospect for 1b. now we have Jose A and that changes the pict. now we have Keon Barnum and R Ravelo vying for the backup role. hey DH is open and who will man that position ?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 07:40 PM) Like I said, outside of Alexei, those guys are cheap fillins who teams can use to cover up holes that appear on their roster during the year. I'm not expecting a lot back for them, but what I do think we could get back is AAA-level relievers who could really do a lot to strengthen our bullpen depth. making a trade for the sack of making a trade is not what the sox need. I believe that Hahn will listen, and will get the best results but, I really don't think the value of the return is going to be good. I will be ok if we stay put let the season play out. I will revisit this in the summer after the all star break. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 07:46 PM) So serious question. If "My agent is Scott Boras" is legitimately pushing a guy down in the draft, why on Earth would a high draft pick use Scott Boras as his agent? You could switch to Boras before you get to free agency if you really want to follow that biggest money possible path, and you're costing yourself several million dollars if you could be a #1 pick and you go#3. regardless of where he is pick, boras will ask for his value and not where he was pick. boras has done this already, with other other picks.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 07:22 PM) He's a fav of mine as well but reality is a mofo as he's aging, his range has declined noticeably the last few years (even if he's still a good glove at SS now that might change as soon as next year), and the Sox are relatively stocked in minors with up the middle prospects. Will be sad to see him go but if he does it will be because Hahn thought it was the right move and so far Hahn has been pushing a lot of the right buttons. without having inside info on the team, I believe he is the start of the vet experience and calming effect that is reinforce by Jose A. screwing with chemisty is a bite. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 03:28 PM) So Jerry was calling Kenny to have him raise the offer to Jose Abreu. Interesting. JR has never been afraid of spending when he needs to, however he will not spend like the Yankees. I remember when he held a meeting with the ticket holders and we were told to write opinions on how to improve the team, many wrote that albert belle needed to be sign to help out big frank ..... hindisight being what it is, how were we to know Belle was BATs*** crazy.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 07:07 PM) You're right, nobody is going to give up anything above a C level prospect for Dunn, Downs, Lindstrom. Alexei however and De Aza could possibly net a top 10 org guy, especially Alexei as he probably has a few 2-3 WAR type seasons left at SS, even if he's declining. With the relative log jam the Sox have in the minors up the middle Ramirez is probably a likely trade candidate, given the return he could net is higher than most of the other tradeable Sox. I'm assuming they aren't going to trade Gillaspie or Viciedo, given their contracts, age and current production. You'd be hard pressed to get fair value back for either. As for Dunn, I'd be very happy if the Sox could unload him in early July for a lottery ticket and pro-rated salary relief, which would be around 5-6 million I believe. If he continues to hit around an 900 OPS, that shouldn't be a problem, but that's a big if. Nobody wants the 220/330/450 version of Adam Dunn, not at his salary, even if it's only a rental. I like what you wrote ..... but I disagree on Alexei and for 1 reason, he is a favorite of mine. I know I can't make an honest assessment on him for that reason. However, I would like to unload Viciedo and b/c of his agent. lets get something now instead of next yr. for trading prospects, I would be in favor of trading t. Anderson. -
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 07:04 PM) http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/prospect-wa...lo-and-simmons/ Unapologetic Ravelo lover Nathaniel Stolz gets to brag a bit. He is a believer in his defense at 3B as well. add me to that list of admirers .... I would love to see him move to the outfield. I believe he can be a really good hitter, maybe like a #2 in the line up, with occasional power.

looking at the wish list here, I really can not fathom where some of these ideas are coming from. T. Thompson will net us nothing, until he can prove he a viable player. A. Dun is a great team player, but unless someone needs a lh hitter for the playoff, he will net us next to nothing. I personally think we may do the trade as a favor to him. Carroll, a good story for a hard luck / injury laiden player, what will he net us? we need to see him pitch more with more success before we start using him in any wish list. Lindstrom and De Aza are the only ones that we may get something of value, but it will be based on their success in the coming months. another player may be Viciedo, that is if he revert back to his batting stats. -
