  1. while everyone has a good point, I am talking about our current players whether it is majors or minors, and how they are playing. players not on the roster not wit standing. the injury bug has hurt us as it has hurt many teams this yr. still we need to continue as we are. look at the waiver list, for short time players that can help.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 25, 2014 -> 05:54 AM) How does that explain what's going on with Erik Johnson? first Johnson was never going to hit the mid 90's, he was slated to 90-92 range. so talking about pitchers being asked to not throw as hard was never in the books, imo. now for Johnson dropping to the high 80's, that is totally a different mystery.

QUOTE (oldsox @ May 26, 2014 -> 12:21 PM) Same thing was posted a year or two ago. Fact is, they are approx 44 games under .500 collectively, and it's tough to get excited. From here, it does not look like a farm system on the rise. Just trying to be objective. The draft will help, but it will help others also. with all due respect, you, we, everyone is looking at the glass at 1/2 empty. last yr, a lot of fans were excited, b/c we had some great talent. that talent move up, now we have system a little bare. the younger talent will eventually move up. but the problem is, we are going to be in this circle until we can get the major team stabilized. Hahn, I believed see this as well. Question, how can we get a minor league team 1/2 way filled with talented???? through trades. some hard trades of favorite players for prospects. we also need, without a doubt to venture into the FA market for quick fixes, esp a #2,3,4 type of pitchers.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ May 26, 2014 -> 06:50 AM) IMO it'll take Atleast 2 more years before we can get excited about the farm. Gota let the guys develop and draft some more good players and sign a couple international prospects this brings an interesting question, some of the young players playing in the majors now, with the sox, were they rushed???
  5. QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ May 26, 2014 -> 06:47 AM) For me it's $$ and Boras as his agent some posters corrected me and mention that with the salary cap for drafted players, player are slotted with the amount of what an agent or advisor can asked. I still believed the advisor can asked for the max and there by limiting the ability to sign the other drafted prospects. Rodon, Alex Jackson are 2 known prospects that have boras. Second the personal animosity that the sox and boras has for each, HAS to play into the equations.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 25, 2014 -> 09:15 PM) He's also only recorded 15 saves in his entire minor league career. 277 hits in 260 innings. Yes, part of that was as a starter. Webb definitely throws 2-3 MPH harder. However, he hasn't quite mastered either the change or curve, which is the reason he was pulled from a starter's role in the first place. If you go back to 2012 in Kannapolis, he had a very pedestrian season. So even though he was quite successful in 2013 and jumped levels (just like Semien), he's far from a finished or refined product. everything said above is very true. that is why they, the sox brass, made him a RP, with the eventual move to closer the following yr. I believe his time this yr is work on his pitch, location and feel of the game, just my opinion. no one would have thought that 2 of our RP will be on the DL.
  7. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ May 26, 2014 -> 04:01 AM) Swallows yep, I heard that the fans of Wrigley does that too.
  8. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ May 25, 2014 -> 04:38 PM) Jim Duquette ‏@Jim_Duquette 41m Anthopoulos just told us besides a starter he would like to find a mainstay at 2b or 3b, and possible some bullpen help @MLBNetworkRadio AA has always been asking about Beckham from the Sox. Now that he's hot, still relatively young, and has been having a good season, could this finally be the year they make a trade for Beckham? if Gordon was slated to be traded, which teams are in need of a 2b / 3b? tor, stl ???

QUOTE (oldsox @ May 26, 2014 -> 12:34 AM) It's a start. imo, you hope for a couple of prospects to developed and bring them along, hoping for 1 day to make it to Majors. expecting the whole minors, to be buzzing with prospects, while it would be nice, is not really going to happen. especially when we are rebuilding, to put it mildly.
  10. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ May 26, 2014 -> 03:57 AM) Not even 2 months into the season. Relax man. Davidson is only 23 and they are saying that thumb injury might of impacted him negatively a little longer than expected. Like Hawk said when Gordon broke his wrist, it takes a while for that strength to come back in your hands and wrists. let me say, has anyone ever played ball with a finger/thumb injury, recovering from a broken bone. it takes time..... I don't care how good or manly you are to man up so to speak. however, let me further say, I am sure that a lot of poster / sox fan were happy when the trade was made. we all thought we needed a 3rd baseman and we needed prospects. well Davidson was not quite ready, whether it was b/c of injury, or skills, or head screwed on right .... he is not ready. look at his age as well. he will come around, if not this yr, then next, count on it.
  11. QUOTE (Bruce_Blixton @ May 25, 2014 -> 04:32 AM) I agree that the lack of Ks from our top pitching prospects has been somewhat alarming but I do find it peculiar that all of our top draft choices that are being groomed to be starters have hit the same wall in their development. This similarity and the evidence provided by this first-hand account of Chris Beck's start in BIR lead me to believe that these pitchers are forced to focus on a certain aspect of their pitching arsenal to help develop their overall game. Also I could imagine that pitchers like Danish have been told to limit velocity and focus on location as well to save their arms while building arm strength which could explain Danish's lower velocity totals. We all know he is capable of hitting the mid-90s so there are has to be some other explanation for the decrease in velocity. first let me state that I did not know he was capable of hitting in the mid 90's. that being said it is a good move by the sox to let them, the pitcher gain strength, I thought of that a couple of yrs back. is it really a bad thing to do?
  12. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 25, 2014 -> 01:39 AM) Not going to make a big deal out of this particularly because Danish is only 19 in High-A, but pitching prospects for the most part need to show a proclivity for the strikeout. Strikeouts are a significant barometer for future success, especially at lower levels as competition only gets better as you move up. Even your pitch to contact sinker types strike people out in the minors. Extreme cases like Brandon Webb even had K/9's in the range of 7 to 9 throughout his progression. There are obviously outliers and exceptions to the rule, but a lack of strikeouts should raise some concern. Once again, not really worried about Danish. He's 19, on an innings limit, and is only working at 88 to 91 so far. Just hoping that more swing and miss shows up as he hones his craft. thanks.... I learned something here.
  13. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 25, 2014 -> 12:00 AM) All the ground balls by Danish are great. Hope the swing and miss starts to develop too though. if I remember correctly, he was never going to be a big strikeout kind of pitcher, mostly grounder and put outs.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 23, 2014 -> 12:39 AM) When you have a consistent history of grabbing other people's trash and turning them into good pitchers for periods of time, you are going to be a well respected pitching coach. if I remember correctly, there is another young pitching coach who is also doing great work with reclamation pitcher as well. does anyone remember what team that may have been?
  15. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 24, 2014 -> 11:31 PM) If you look at it from the standpoint of who in the pen is most likely to get through the 9th or any other inning for that matter without walking people and/or giving up runs, it's Putnam, today's outing notwithstanding. The problem with the pen is that no matter how you order it there's still no real stability. We have a couple quality MR options and a couple potential quality SU options, but zero effectiveness from the left side, no real specialists, no real closer. Putting Webb into the 9th could easily result in him moving back to the front of the pen, and would you really want to do that with your closer of the future, push him too aggressively into that role? IMO you go Putnam & hope that Carroll can do some light work in the front end. Belisario was working well in the SU role, and if you want to prime Webb for the closer gig in the future maybe you go with him as your righty specialist, that way he'll be in the mindset that he can get into any game and there will still be some pressure, i.e. men on and a tough hitter at the plate good part of the time. Ultimately some guys are just going to have to step up like Petricka did and push Downs off the team. I bet Hahn's scouts have been very busy looking for quality LHRP prospects in other organizations. I like it, while an argument can be made of putting webb there, I rather keep him where he is, at least until after the all star game. we got some young arms in the minors that will also come up next yr, that will be a very good pen. let's not forget we are still in a quasi rebuilding state.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ May 23, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) Board survey time....who is your wish list for the 3rd pick? Fathom's Sure To Be Wrong Wish List (I was against drafting Wacha and Trout, but loved the Beckham pick) 1. Rodon 2. Nola 3. Aiken ok I am falling in in line with the board opinions and pick Brady Aiken not there, i would go with Max Pentecost, for the savings of the slot money, for who might be at 44, 77 and 108. With the 44 pick, if hoffman is not there, Braxton Davidson, luke weaver, Joseph Gatto or Kodi Medeiros. those players can be justified for the second round, however, here is where my craziness come in. my wish pick would be cat - Chase Vallot, here is where some of the savings may come in and pay him over slot money to sign. with the third round, good players to pick, but plenty of question marks whether would they sign or go back to school. the most exciting 2 players i really like is p - Jake Cosart out of tx and cat - Taylor Gushue. both player are in college and coming into their own. oops i lied Taylor Gushue did the Bryce Harper thing and graduated early by 1/2 yr and enrolled into college where he immediately started and became a triple crown hitter, while doing really good work as a starting catcher. again used some of that money and sign 1 or them. I know some of my picks are cat, some may moved to outfield or dh.
  17. I believe that was the idea, first get him 1 yr as long / short - relief and then next yr battle for RP

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 24, 2014 -> 01:56 PM) This seems like an obvious move. If he can throw that hard maybe we can make him into a decent reliever. the problem is not throwing hard but the location of the pitch. if his fastball is flat and straight, all the batters have to do wait. location, location and movement of the fastball is the key.
  19. QUOTE (gatnom @ May 23, 2014 -> 10:15 PM) Don't get me wrong, Hawkins is definitely the better prospect based on his tools; there's no question about that. However, Trey has shown a consistent ability to draw walks and has managed to improve without completely hitting a wall due to his mechanics and/or pitch recognition. Hopefully, as he gets older he'll start to develop a more pronounced power tool and become a bigger prospect. Trey have been developing quite nicely, esp without a lot of people noticing the improvement. according to his profile, the baseball guru has mentioned that his power will develop, maybe not Hawkins prediction. I still don't know about Anderson, yes I know what they are predicting, but I am looking at the stat and makeup of how he is doing now. I would like to see how Hawkins, Trey and Anderson are doing at the all star break.
  20. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 23, 2014 -> 09:20 PM) Cubs are said to be all over Max Pentecost going way underslot to boost the rest of their picks in the top 5. now that it's being talked about, esp with the mlb rumors board mentioning it..... my take. I wamted another pitcher before, but since he got hurt I mention that Max Pentecost would be a good pick. esp on the savings we will get as an under slot player. now if Aiken is not there at 3, pick Pentecost and roll with it. the other players that I mention several weeks ago are good picks, but they are high schoolers. with the savings we can do over slot signing on some other good players later.
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2014 -> 12:54 PM) Goldberg at 7 and Vance being close to Top 10 are the two biggest surprises I've seen on a list so far. all man, I love it. being called upon to Justify my comments. I love it when healthy discussion happen with our sox prospects. with regards to Danish, he is no hard thrower, but he kind of remind me of a pitcher who knows how to pitch and get people out. Trey Michalczewski is what 19, and he is putting up decent numbers. other prospect who were higher are not having a good season. I am basing on his performance. he may not a lot of homers, so maybe a switch or something, hey he is still only 19. Tim Anderson - I was being nice here, I would have put him around Hawkins........ K's a lot, defense ???? but he is hitting around 250+. I just don't know, yes I have to remind myself he is 20. Francellis Montas and Brad Goldberg - as the old saying goes ...... you can not teach a pitcher to throw hard. both pitcher are what .... 95+ mph. brad is 24, montas is what 22. I have a gut feeling that these 2 may be on the major list faster than any prospects we have now. Hawkins - based on last yr, he really need to do well this season to gain faith in him as a high prospect, I don't see why we judge him as a high prospect. let wait this yr out and revisit his potential. Davidson .... do I really need to say anything that hasn't been said? Lastly, Kevin Vance - I always thought he would be a decent, knowledgeable starting pitcher with 3 very good pitches to his resume. but I guess the sox want him as a reliever maybe a long reliever. his best pitch is the curve and I believe his fast ball hits in the 90-92. now this is what I remember, I may be wrong, the other posters whol have a better memory or resources could correct me. I really like some of our prospects.... I am excited with this group. thanks peace
  22. my list based on my wishful thinking. 1. Micah Johnson - what is there not to like 2. Tyler Danish - improving fast 3. Trey Michalczewski - continues to shine 4. Carlos Sanchez - this is based on my guess and what the stats says 5. Tim Anderson - hitting improving, defense ??? 6. Francellis Montas - i like his makeup 7. Brad Goldberg - same as #6, may be the 2 or 3 player to the majors 8. Matt Davidson - at this time, needs head screw on right 9. Courtney Hawkins - lets see how this yr develops 10. Andrew Mitchell - came out of no where to shine Cleuluis Rondon + Kevin Vance + Rangel Ravelo are too close to call.
  23. QUOTE (GreenSox @ May 21, 2014 -> 07:18 PM) Looks like Dunn is our major trade piece this summer. Then Bellasario. why not include g. Beckham in that group.
  24. QUOTE (OilCan @ May 19, 2014 -> 09:54 PM) http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2014/5/17/57...l-carbonell-per Includes a Youtube vid. here's a second linky w/another Youtube vid: http://www.pinstripealley.com/yankees-rumo...fect-free-agent MLB rumors site has the sox in the bidding for him. maybe not a serious bid but nevertheless bidding for his services. thanks
  25. Does anyone have a profile/makeup of Cuban Daniel Carbonell?
