Phil the Chimp...better than Swisher's last mascot
LDF replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 05:24 AM) “There have been some instances where things happened that probably shouldn’t have happened, and he was right there in the middle of it,” Dunn explained. “I just know that bats fall on your foot that probably shouldn’t have fallen on your foot. There have been some other things. His hands go places they probably shouldn’t go and hit you in places they probably shouldn’t hit you. Obviously he can’t do this by himself, but something is going on there.” The Eaton story with his wife freaking out coming into the hotel room in California was pretty funny. that was a great find ..... extremely funny. dunn, seems to be a great clubhouse player. I agree with you on eaton' s wife. -

QUOTE (Señor Ding-Dong @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 09:56 PM) How about Saladino or Sanchez? (not sure about the latter's English) Wendelken and Montas too, like SoxPride18 said, but again I'm not sure about Montas' English. those 4 plus Mitchell btw, do you have the past interviews saved?

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:59 PM) As an optimist, thought I'd jump the gun on getting thoughts from the crew. The org has to believe we have a real chance for us to be buyers, obviously, but this Pecota -projection-style parity we're seeing could make it so. A starting pitcher heads the list for me, but who could be had at a non-future-damaging price that could actually help? OR who could be had that would also be controllable thru 2015 at a minimum? A LH RP to relieve Downs' high-leverage load would sure be nice. Rex Brothers will never be cheaper and I'd like to see his talented arm under Coop's wing. He needs fixing, but he's been really good in the past. Who else might we like? A LH OF who isn't De Aza is a need now and going forward, imo, and this is perhaps the primary reason I'm starting this thread. Due to relative low cost for possible high return, I'd like to target FA-to-be Seth Smith. He's having a salary drive kind of career year, but 930 OPS in Petco isn't sneezeworthy, and his level of power is bound to play up at the Cell. He's a platoon guy, but as previously discussed, that will put him in upwards of 80% of our divisional games. He also might be the best offseason option (especially if we go big on a SP) for a 3-4 year deal, and we'll have a head-start and better intel on that possibility if he were brought in in July. He's NOT a good outfielder, but the #'s say he's semi-passable in LF these days, which could also allow DH flexibility/more left-handedness. He's always struck me as a professional hitter - maybe he's turning a corner in his career, the OBP has always generally been very solid. I'd really like to hear the opinions of oldsox (and re: Brothers too) and anyone who's seen him a lot in OAK or SD more recently. He may be a potential bargain, all tucked away down there with little publicity. What would it take? What say you, Soxtalk? Also, due to the MI potential in our system, I'm in the trade-Beckham-if-you-get-a-really-good-offer-even-if-we-ARE-competing camp. Who's with me? as much as I would love to be in the running, we do not have the pieces to put on the table for a trade unless we deal some of our young prospects.

sox just made a trade according to mlb rumors for a pitcher name Shawn Hill

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:43 PM) It was absolutely the weakest trade of Hahn's tenure so far, both on paper and in terms of result. I think he could have got more if he traded him before the deadline, but obviously it wasn't that much more if he didn't pull the trigger. I think the biggest fault lies with the league for underrating Rios. it is what it is. I also add Davidson / Reed trade ranks there. however to see a full value we need to wait for Davidson make it to the majors.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:04 PM) I thought I saw two vaginas on a woman once. I turned out to be pretty wrong but who knows women ummm do you mean post op

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:32 PM) Considering he signed at slot even though he fell out of the first round that wasn't true. I wonder, do you think that a phone call was not made to players before they were drafted. I mean in the first and second with the comp pick.

Garfein: Sox could trade Beckham for pitching
LDF replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:34 PM) I know I'm in the minority, but might we want to see if this resurgence is real, considering that Steverson seems to be getting through to a few guys that others haven't? Or have they returned to their old habits enough that we don't like Steverson anymore either? that is a really good point, how much of the hitting success esp with Viciedo and others goes to Stevenson. -
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:26 PM) It was well documented that Texas wanted rios for free in 2014. Hahn said f*** no, we'll just accept the waiver and you are stuck with everything in exchange for 50 grand( the transfer fee). The rangers should be lucky they even got the sox to give up $1 million in 2013 salary in exchange for Garcia. It was also reported that the pirates wanted rios, but the players they offered were not enough for Hahn to pick up 2014 salary. Unlike a certain genius on Addison and Clark, who have the YANKEES 14 million to take soriano in exchange for alone fourth round pitching prospect. thanks for the additional info but the bottom line is this was the best we can get and it was nothing but a salary dump.

Garfein: Sox could trade Beckham for pitching

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:01 PM) I don't see it under this regime. This isn't apples and apples, but we could have traded PHumber at max value. Since we were contending it wasn't an option. Since we are contending this year in a s*** league, I doubt this same regime would trade one of our more productive players mid season. The only reason we MIGHT, IMO, is because the stables are full of MI that need to play. But almost every team has a pretty good shot at the playoffs. Has KW ever made a trade like that when we are competing? during that time, KW was not in full rebuild mode. -
Garfein: Sox could trade Beckham for pitching

I thought it was understood when Beckham came back, esp when his hitting improved, he may be shopped. with all the MI we have, someone or more may be moved. I was liked Beckham. but with him or a package, we can get players / prospects. I trust Hahn to do his homework and get the best we can for him. this I would like to see and what we get for him. hello Tor, hello Bos -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 07:44 PM) I also agree in full with the previous 3 posts. I guess I have been talked off the ledge. I will not post concerning rodon until we signed him.... however I was wondering ....... does that mean I can't talk bad about borAss???

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 06:25 PM) Thanks for the update, 72. Hope to see something on the Baron's site before too long. thank all for the update and it was greatly appreciated, since I was gone for a long time. with that in mind, I guess I was meaning that I been seeing a good amount of improvement so to speak. I was just needed updates. again thank

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 10:52 PM) Here's the thing, this isn't an open market deal. His only leverage is basically going back for a senior year, or going independent league. Both carry tremendous risk. going the independent route is 1 yr and then he is a fa. signing for whomever offer the most money.
-
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 10:22 PM) also didnt the sox get pi**ed when they were trying to get johnny damon,we thought we were gonna get him, but he was just using their offer as leverage against the tigers? oh crap..... you are right, but I forgot who was damon agent at the time. good one.

is it me or does it seem that we are starting to have some positive news coming from our minor league teams or is this the yearly cycle of fools gold.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 09:58 PM) Joba actually was something very special until the NYY organization and the NY setting ruined his career if Bryce doesn't pan out as a starter and we do sign him..... then we have another closer and a young one at that.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 10:06 PM) I'm guessing Rodon's family isn't going to be very happy if he misses a half yea of development in arguably the single best org for pitching development because of 500k either way. 6 million will be chump change if he's signing a pre FA deal with the Sox before he turns 25. if I remember correctly, the sox had a deal with alex fernadez (misspell) and then borAss at the last sec up the cost...... that started the whole feud. I believe something to that effect also happen to arod. so the bottom line, nothing is a sure thing with borAss. however I am still holding out for some hope as RockRaines said.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 10:06 PM) I think some kids overvalue the experience of college ball. I played division I college athletics and it was the high point of my "career," but I wasn't given the option of signing a pro contract. If a kid thinks he can have both, they gamble on their health for having it all. I too play while in college but I somehow got screw, no help or free ride... somehow the powers to be never thought checkers was competitive enuf.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 10:02 PM) We can promise them a college education, and it does NOT count towards the bonus pool. that is one huge loop hole if one is of mind to exploit it.....
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 09:38 PM) Honestly, for a lot of the high school kids that get drafted, you almost have to think that a $200-300k guaranteed contract plus the guarantee of funding for a college education makes it worth it to sign. and that is the big question, can we, or is there a section that guarantee for college funding?

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 09:04 PM) No way. He either gets above slot money or he gets the fast track. Absolutely no reason to give him both. Considering the way he was used this season, I imagine that his workload will be relatively light the rest of the year. They may pitch him a couple innings out of the bullpen every fifth day to keep him on schedule and limit his innings. There is no reason to start his arb clock and go over slot in the same deal as that will cost the Sox a lot more money down the road if Rodon meets his potential. I think the goal should be to have him ready for opening day 2016 so that the Sox can control his rights through their window of contention in 2016-2019. Its either $5.5M and a callup or $6M+ and you keep him in the minors until he is ready. Getting him to go underslot at $5.5 likely allows you to sign BODM which is probably worth letting Rodon getting to arbitration a year earlier. I love it when we can talk tough if only we, the sox, can back it up. if we sign rodon and a big if, I would love to venture into the fa market for missing parts, like a bona fide SP and another position player if needed. value wise, it will be a great time and move to do it.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 09:01 PM) It is unlikely but if the Sox can get to that second number (with Rodon at slot) De Oca would be absolutely insane to pass on that. Frankly anything $750,000 and above he would be crazy to pass since he would have to stay healthy and still pitch well enough in college to go in the first two rounds to get a bigger bonus than that. there was another prospect who honored his word to his college team this past draft. I believe in slot money and we will have enuf to sign Bryce..... there are still some questions that need to be answered in regards to his emerging talent.
