QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:41 PM) And I'm just saying that he's getting awfully close to being dumped to avoid giving him the salary he'd command in arbitration, so if you do get a tolerable offer for him, at least it's gotta be considered. and if the sox goes arb on him, I am going to find it hard that the sox will lose.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:41 PM) We're not already wasting $4-5 million on Beckham and DeAza??? C'mon. If you throw in Keppinger, Downs (another similar contract) and Paulino, that's a lot of payroll misallocation. As someone said, if you subtract Dunn and Viciedo (and maybe Ramirez), who in God's name is going to provide power next year? Matt Davidson, who has already struck out 100 times in Charlotte? A GM that's going to spend that kind of money on Downs and Lindstrom and then dump Viciedo for nothing isn't going to last very long. Hahn's smarter than that, especially with the dearth of power hitting threats around baseball today. keppinger was a very expensive mistake. (on a side note, why is he still on the IR in the minors)

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:40 PM) He's getting awfully close to being a non-tender candidate and he's not hitting well enough right now to be worth $5 million if he were a FA. That absolutely plays into it for me regarding whether to accept an offer for him. baseball is a business, I understand that, baseball has to show a profit and I too understand that, but sometimes do a salary dump can hurt. there may be dynamics at play we do not know of. loyalty to the Cubans.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:36 PM) But if they hesitate at all, and they get something non-terrible offered in return for him...you at least have to ask whether he's going to give any surplus value beyond his salary next year. Oh, and if he just keeps going, $6-7 million the year after that. I am not suggesting to not to trade, all I am saying do not do a salary dump.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:31 PM) It depends on if they are willing to pay him $5 million as a 2nd year arb candidate next year. the sox can do a whole of good by not doing a salary dump.... plain and simple. if the trade market improves in the offseason then re-examine the prospect of trading him. again if we can get a prospect back.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:24 PM) This is a joke yup and it has always been. that is why I haven't been interested in ASG since the 80's.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:20 PM) Of course there's no good reason Jeter made the team. if jeter made it b/c he is retiring than why not Paulie.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 10:10 PM) Yeah, for some reason I was thinking Danks was off the books at the end of 2015. It's actually 2016. Still see more upside to trading him now, but it all depends on whether Cooper et al think he can retain his recent success instead of erratically bouncing around in the 4.5-5.25 ERA range for the next 2 1/2 seasons. If he's going to be a 4/5 type of starter, then you obviously are better off dumping the salary. As has been noted over and over again, the peripherals don't necessarily back up the quality starts and ERA numbers the last 6 weeks. Caulfield, you are a very good poster, however advocating dumping salary this yr is not needed. saving salary money is not needed. remember the commish still keeps an eye on teams doing just this. making trades to get better prospects for the team is the only way I will make anymore trades this yr.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:08 PM) Yeah, the time to deal him has long passed. At this point, you pray for the upside to pan out rather than get back someone whose best-case scenario is he could be a decent reliever. if the sox can not get a good prospect (s) back which will justify the trade, why trade him at all.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 10:24 PM) It does ZERO good to hold onto Dunn since he's going to leave at the end of the year as a FA. Other than protecting Konerko from having to play everyday, there's no reason to keep him...you could even argue it would be better to see what they have in Michael Taylor offensively. Save that money for next year...if they really wanted to, they could always bring Adam back in 2015, but the odds of that happening are very low. it does a whole lot more to hold him instead of doing a salary dump, if that was the reason to trade him. I am and will always say do the PR move dunn and keep him and show other baseball players the sox are loyal. however the same can be said differently when we dfa a pitcher, a positional player so where do the sox draw the line on who to keep out of loyalty. smarter people than I need to answer that. I am just a fan and nothing more.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:13 PM) I like him too, but try for a little more. They've got to be desperate for some pop. for the purpose of what if and who would I love from sea. 1. hitter - Patrick Kivlehan 24, at his age and in AA I always liked his makeup and stat esp since fall of last yr. 2. pit - Edwin Diaz 20, in A league, 3. cat - Tyler Marlette, 21 A league, keep picking prospects. 4. pit - T Pike AA again with picking up prospects. any 2 or the 4 listed. I would not include any on the major leag roster. also there are some prospects that I am sure that are not listed. however do you really think they, sea will allow the sox to pick more than 1 prospects???

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 08:31 PM) We, the intelligent, informed Sox fans.... All he;s sayins is.... Sox ain't trading for some dude who makes 20 mildo a year, so get used to names you are familiar with being replaced by names you've never heard of... except for the marlin / mets being mention, I think we have had more informative discussion with regard to trades. the idea of the yank with looking for more pitching is still something that have yet to be confirmed. ummm I wonder if he has been reading soxtalk, maybe not.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 07:13 PM) He's still on base at like a .360 clip. Offers LH power. You don't care about this because you only remember him striking out. Mr. Whiff is clever though. Instead of thinking about clever nicknames, do some research and some simple math and find out the guys on the Sox that have committed more outs than Dunn has this year. But hey whatever fits the narrative. very good, oh btw I am not getting involve to defend either one, I am just saying you asked a great question and I came up with the wrong assumption. I look it up and it is flowers..... wow their stats are almost similar across the board. I now know something new. thanks

QUOTE (ron883 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 05:33 PM) I've heard Ravelo called decently athletic. Could he not handle the corner OF? won't it be better to let him fully develop esp with his hitting and let see what pos he can hangle

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 06:24 PM) At the end of the day, I think it's going to be difficult to find the proper return for Viciedo. He's likely going to be a mediocre hitter the rest of his career who always flashes with his talent. His upside and talent that shows like an Encarnacion or Beltre is always going to get him chances and give the team who has him under contract optimism for the future, thus possibly overvaluing him. The thing is, Dayan Viciedo is the exact type of player people want to acquire during rebuilds. See if the guy can put it together and if not, you have others coming up in the minors. We're sick of him as Sox fans because we've seen him for years and years, but how many Rangers fans were tired of Chris Davis murdering AAA and coming up and failing? How about the Reds with Encarnacion? It's not the worst thing to not get a return on someone via trade. Frankly, the same thing goes for Beckham too with the caveat that the Sox have middle infield depth and Beckham is a free agent after next season. So, no,I don't think they should trade him unless they get a big enough offer, which I don't foresee happening. and with that goes the saying, if we get someone of value find, if not, no trade. lets not think of doing a so - called trade b/c we and disguise it as a salary dump. we don't need to dump salary and I can live with them in the lineup.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 04:53 PM) Danks has a contract through 2016 I believe. He's a back end starter on a contender. If someone offers us value, then we have to move him. I see us as more of a 2016 contender than 2015 (where we could be a 80-85 win team). The Front Office also wants to set us up for consistent contention, which means that depth and a strong farm are parts of the equation as well. Moving Danks, Alexei, et al, if good offers emerge, will bring more assets onto this team that we'll need when we're ready to contend in a year or 2. Their losses can be replaced. The pitching needs a ton more depth, especially as the farm is particularly empty right now. this yr we had a very good draft esp if Rodon signs, with the way this yr is playing out, we may have a top 10 next yr..... another yr of selective signing esp from international scene. we may be set. if we make trades of any kind, the prospects we get will help. I agree however if all goes well I see a running at the end of next season maybe a wildcard.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 04:34 PM) If all goes as planned the rotation could be very good next year....I really wanna see Sale-Q-RH FA-Danks-Noesi and then eventually Sale-Q-RH FA-Danks-Rodon. That's a playoff caliber rotation right there. and again JR is loyal and will sign dank to an extension, imho. with that pitching, we address some minor holes in the lineup / positional players, the rebuild can be a really short one. I still feel comfortable with a fa starting pitcher and rp. I am sorry but as of right now, I still am uncertain of RH. again let me add, we still haven't seen any movement from tor nor sea with ref to trades. ummmm
-
I am surprise that teams are making trades now instead of late july. I haven't seen tor make any moves yet the same with sea.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 04:02 AM) You spelled it wrong. The word includes a number, damn it! I keep rereading this and still am confused, but man you are funny. I love it. thanks for the humor.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) Depends on what we get for him and how we spend. He's at peak value now, 32 years old, and if we are going to trade him, now is absolutely the time. The Sox are a little better than mid pack in runs scored (above average in SLG, below average in OBP, as always), getting subpar production from C, LF and RF. Replacing Alexei for a SS who can at least equal his defense, plus improvement in the corner outfield spots and on the mound, with more depth in the farm, is a big 1 year improvement for this organization. I absolutely would have Alexei front and center on the trading block and hope we do. and all this from a team that all knows is rebuilding.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 03:54 PM) Again, like Rock and others have said countless times....The Sox don't need to cut payroll....At all. If they traded Danks theyd have 28 million on the books for next year. With him they're around 45. As you say there aren't a ton of worthwhile FAs out there so why get the payroll down to 28 mill? Peripherals be damned, Danks has been a great pitcher for us this year and his salary isn't going to prevent them from going after yet another starter AND a bat or 2.....If those signings work out and Rodon does end up getting fast tracked, it's very possible they could compete next year. At the very least keeping Danks another year makes him more valuable at next years deadline when he becomes cheaper. 2 things to think about, 1. with the "A's" getting 2 pitchers for the stretch run, teams may feel compel to do the same. 2. the sox may will need a good rotation to help getting the momentum going for the sox fans and all. unless teams offer a crap load to entice the trade, who cares. we keep him. plus JR is not telling the brass to sell.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) Or maybe there wasn't even talks to begin with....Or the Sox were asking for "too much" because they don't really need to deal him. bingo.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) There you go. Even though the Yankees would SEEM to need a left-hander with the subtraction of CC Sabathia from the equation, they'd still prefer to take a smaller risk of $5 million on McCarthy vs. roughly $20 million for Danks in salary. unless, if it is true the sox/yanks rumor, the rtn for dank was high. plus dank has another yr left on his salary.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) Yes. Dunn will get you a decent prospect in return if you eat the contract. I'm guessing the Sox will deal him for for two high upside types in A ball that are in the teens of someone's system and take the salary relief though. Dunn can help a playoff contender. Not sure why people think he can't. salary cost, there are some team that invested all they can to make this push. outside hitting for power, I just wasn't too sure who else would see him helping. thanks.
