  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 04:22 AM) So if we sign this guy it's one less hole. We'll have him, A. Garcia and Eaton in the outfield with DeAza or Danks as the fourth outfielder. Viciedo has to be let go or traded for scraps. The key is to sign this guy as soon as we're allowed to. Abreu is working out; add this young man and at least our outfield is set. true, a fix via free agent without giving up future prospect picks and a quick fix at that.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 03:43 PM) Can we honestly imagine Ravelo at 1B/DH, Gillaspie at 3B....god knows who in the middle infield, then Eaton and maybe Micah Johnson or Marcus Semien in LF? That's a recipe for another 99 loss team. In 2012, Ravelo only played in 76 games. In 2013, 101. By my count, that's around 85 games or so he's missed out in terms of his development over those two minor league seasons. In 2012, he was a mid-season all-star for Kanny, so that means he missed significant time in the 2nd half. This is also his first season in three where he's been healthy for almost the entire year, at least up til this point. while I like your enthusiasm about using Ravelo, but I was once told by many posters many yrs ago, you use 1b / dh for power hitters. why, I don't know how that came to be.
  3. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) The strikeouts and low batting average don't really matter for him though. I actually wish his batting average was lower and he had more homers. you brought up sometime intersesting...... I am going to need some help here. who helps out your team more .... a player who hit 20-30 hrs, avg 175-225, k about 190 a yr. or a player who hits 300 avg, hit>k 150 / 70 and less than 10 homers?
  4. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 03:29 PM) Didn't really need a bunch of statistical analysis to tell us that, did we? as much as it hurts, we need to continuing reminding ourself, we are rebuilding. we are going to drive ourselves crazy and continue to ask how we got like this.... bottom line we won a world series with GM at the helm, and I trust Hahn. I hope it is a 1 yr plan.
  5. well I am going to the ress this week, I hope when I come back we have some good news about our draft pick signing and maybe some trades. go white sox.
  6. Hawk has came up with many a great nicknames during his tenure as a sox announcer. and I enjoyed almost all of them. yessss oops I made a major mistake, I really thought this was about good nicknames.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 03:29 PM) This is the second time I've seen you refer to Ravelo's health being an issue. Where are you getting this? He's had two short stints with minor injuries, missing a few days once, and once a few weeks. How is that a health "issue"? Anyway, let's be more direct - the question is about Ravelo's home run power very specifically. He gets tons of XBH, more usually than most Sox prospects. His Iso SLG this year is .151, which is pretty good but not great... but the good news is, he already has 5 HR after hitting 4 all of last year, and he can hit the ball a long, long way when he gets a little loft on it. He's a line drive hitter by nature, so really he doesn't lack power in the tool sense - he lacks home runs. At 22 in AA, he's on pace for about 10 HR, so progress is there and I think there's a good chance it develops much further. For that matter, if he keeps hitting .300 and getting on base .400 and keeps up his typical 40-double on a full-season pace, that alone might get him there even with only 10-15 HR a year. if and I mean if his upside can be a #2 hitter or 7-10 hitter, I can live with that, esp if he great on defense.
  8. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 03:33 PM) I am using stats. He has slipped a bit recently but for most of the season his OPS has been in the 800-850 range. That is a good year. Not a great year or even a really good year, but a good year. I also don't see a lot of options to get anything better than .800 out of the DH spot next year, so having Dunn back makes sense if they don't get the kind of deal for him in July that I expect they will. I think dunn does a lot more than he is credited for, clubhouse wise. with that, I think this yr is a wash rebuilding and getting better prospects. dunn coming back at what cost ($$). also there is a lot of swing and misses with a low 200 avg for me.
  9. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) I listed Beckham, Ramirez, and Gillaspie. I don't think any of them is untradeable if the right offer comes along, but all three of them are hitting significantly above league average for their position. Given how difficult it is to find good defensive infielders who can also hit, it would take a pretty nice offer to get me to part with any of them. I know that the minors is deep in the infield right now, but there's no guarantees that any of those guys can produce like this. If you assume that AGarcia comes back next year and is at least a little bit above average offensively for a RF and Eaton continues to improve, you're really only three spots (LF, C, DH) away from a really good lineup. Dunn is having a good year and I'd like to see him back, but I think that he is exactly the kind of guy that a contending team will overpay for in July and the Sox can't turn that down. There are also three quality starters and three quality bullpen arms (plus Jones coming back next year), so while this team is bad right now it isn't far away from being very strong. I am a big Dunn fan and really like it when we signed him, now here is my question, what do you call having a good yr .... stat wise or how do you judge it.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 02:05 PM) Why? Boggs has proven he's terrible. He was worth a shot, but if a 2.23 WHIP and a 9.26 ERA after 34 innings in AAA Charlotte doesn't show ineptitude, I don't know what does. furthermore, if he was given a chance to see what he has left or to catch magic in a bottle, and failed, at least we know it wasn't meant to be. as bare as our system is, we need to really look to see if someone is there who can help.
  11. Feeky Magee I really don't know you as a poster and I seen your good work on future sox doing the update, but lets talk about the a word you may know hypocrite. By saying what you said about how I chose to use borAss is one thing and it would hold water if you were even though out your condemnation of what I wrote, I will accept it. however on the same day, you didn't even say anything negative about how Blowasavio was used. ummm ref DirtySox, I never knew ad nauseum oops I meant ad nauseam was meant that I was using borAss excessive degree. see I just came back and I didn't know how many times it was used. here is another thought, I believe I started using borAss many, many yrs ago and I also believe I was the first. either way, why didn't get on your proverbial and tell how it is not proper to critical of our own players. btw, yes I had to look up what ad nauseam meant.
  12. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 05:59 AM) He has some trade value. A lot more than a failed former prospect. if I remember correctly, tor gm AA always liked and wanted beckham and when the season started and before his stint on the IR, stl, bos and I believe a west coast team was mention to inquire about him. now this may be in trade rumors or some other sport site, but I couldn't find the sites again. that was why I was spouting a trade w/stl a few weeks back. a package of players for prospects is the way to go. stl, still need a 2b with wong in the IR, bos need 2b / of, nyy - 2b / pit, tex need a 1b/dh. so teams that are in the running need quick fixes. I am not even talking about tor needs. beckham, danks, viciedo, dunn, and even flower > la dodgers. then again this may be a pipe dream on my part.
  13. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 12:27 AM) So I've been engaging in a stupid and mostly time-wasting argument with a guy on another forum who claims to be a "prospect professional". He has a prospect book on Amazon, so he feels like he is the authority on prospects. Anyway. He is adament that the Sox system is the 29th or 30th farm system in baseball. He isn't quite sure if the Angels farm system is worse. Despite the fact that I told him all the major publications rank the system somewhere between 21-27, he insist Rodon is the only worthwhile prospect, and the only one who is a top 100 prospect. Thinks Courtney Hawkins, Micah Johnson, Tyler Danish and all those guys are pretty much garbage. Just to try and see how ridiculous he is willing to go with this, I compared the Brewers top prospects to the Sox. In case you were wondering, the Brewers are considered the 2nd worst farm system, and of the top 7 prospects or so in the Brewers organization, they are ALL having terrible seasons, except for 1 pitcher they have who is dominating. One particularly interesting opinion he has is that Orlando Arcia is a better SS prospect than Tim Anderson. to further add to what southside hitman mentioned there are no parameter establish when comparing prospects in this situation. 2 different type of players, 1 in a "slick fielding" prospect while the other is a very good bat. as prospects goes, I would love to have both on my team.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 22, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) Cuban players still can’t yet come to Major League Baseball unless they defect from the island, but the agreements allow players to participate in foreign leagues during the summer (the offseason for Cuba) and return to Cuba afterwards to play in Serie Nacional. It’s not known how Cepeda’s contract will be split between him and the Cuban government. www.baseballamerica.com many thanks for the updates, in essence we won't know who signs Tomas until the offseason.
  15. Tomas will need to spend some time getting all the paperwork taken care off. those who knows the rules, what is the earliest Tomas can signed with any mlb team? also if you can answer this other question, for those Cubans who are playing in Japan, why can't they sign with MLB teams?
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) With some new admins entering the fold, I also want to take the time to thank some long-time moderators who will be retiring from the front-lines, surviving the toll being a mod takes, and getting fat off of the many 1000% raises from their $0 base!!! I truly want to thank the below posters for being excellent moderators on this site and while they might be retired mods, they are all tremendous posters and assets to the site!!! Thanks for doing such an awesome job helping Soxtalk grow and shine!!! - Kalapse (one of the sites all time greatest posters and the proud presenter of the "Kalapse's Sox Payroll Resource, which at one time, was the premiere resource for Sox payroll information) - YASNY (a true legend on Soxtalk and great all time Sox fan) - Lost (probably the funnest man on facebook) - Scenario (great poster and an expert in all things minor league) - Rex KickAss (Bea Arthur's Alter ego and biggest fan) - Soxy (A PhD of White Sox) Thank you!!! OH MAN, those guy were great and great posters. now I feel like .... old. only a hand full of old-timers are still around. the stories that can be told those old times.......
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 22, 2014 -> 07:09 AM) As a free agent. It's not going to happen, but it would be more logical than throwing a ton of money at Victor Martinez, LaRoche, Melky Cabrera, Seth Smith, etc. With Gillaspie and Davidson already in the fold, as well as Semien...but someone along the lines of Headley who's having a disappointing season, compared to the names listed above. Rasmus would be another example. I have thought of this as a problem already. If Davidson gets back to where he was at the time of the trade, the lack of dh and missing pieces in the of, where can the sox best use Davidson. 1b / db and let him and Abreu share time dh'ing. of course I am mentioning this for the offseason going forward,
  18. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jun 22, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) who exits when/if rienzo moves to pen? engel and basto both played in arizona? jaye got rocked again. again, we might have a glut of RP in the future.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 02:36 AM) Yesterday, Keith Law seemed to say that Johnson was a top 100 prospect wow, right now MJ is on fire, world beater. I like it, but to say what would his ceiling be, for me I need to see him even out, let his hot streak end, but in the mean time, enjoy the ride.
  20. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 11:37 PM) 40 man roster not an issue with White Sox. Unfortunately, it is loaded with players who have little or no chance of making a contribution anytime. There are probably 7-8 players on it who fit that description, partially offset by two guys on the 60 day DL. thanks for the update.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 11:11 PM) The Giants have such a big lead right now they're not going to give away much for Beckham. Of course, the Dodgers SEEMINGLY have to make a run at some point, and the Giants need to improve all-around offensively (other than Morse, Posey, etc.), but we're not going to get anything substantial back from Sabean. The thing is that other teams also would only have him for one season, and historically he's been below average...so you're still in many ways holding onto Ramirez and Beckham and going for it all again in 2015 IMO. As always, if someone bowls you over with offers for Ramirez OR someone just forces their way into the line-up (and Semien clearly failed to do so), then you can be more willing to make a trade. But with Semien seemingly destined for utility work this season at the big league level and Micah Johnson at least 2-3 months away, a trade of Beckham the way he's going right now and with how close they are to the Tigers and WC would be surprising. if the sox can't trade beckham b/c of the value of the return, i wouldn't cry if we still have him after the trade deadline. my only hope would be, i hope he continues his good hitting.
  22. On a side note, with the new prospects and the draft and the existing players and prospects, where do the sox stand with ref to the 40 man rosters. i don't remember all the rules concerning that.
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) Good suggestions all around so far, thanks. Andrew or Jared? sorry for the long delay ..... its Andrew.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 08:43 PM) There's going to be the longest thread in the history of SoxTalk on July 18th if he doesn't sign. It would also go a long way towards sealing the fate of Viciedo, if that hasn't already been decided. Bingo !!!!!!! i have been thinking of the BorAss / Viciedo since the season started. As much i was pulling for the Cuban connections with the other players, i would say screw it with Viciedo and trade him. BorAss will never give the sox a break or anything. remember when danks family had borAss as their agent, they change in order to get the sox to sign them. I wonder what value the other teams has on Viciedo????
  25. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 08:27 PM) I would definitely think the Giants would have interest in Beckham. Despite his 8 HR and his very nice walk rate, Brandon Hicks is batting under .200 and is striking out 30% of the time. Maybe a return of someone like RHRP Heath Hembree? if i remember correctly, a while back some 2-3 wks, i was reading how the gaints was looking at beckham, but he was in the IR. i really like what tor has and been hoping for some time that something would happen concerning beckham and sox wanting to trade. i would be happy just to get some prospects to continue to build on.
