QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 11:35 PM) And how old were you when you came Down Under? Hold on, let me do the math. . .13? Oh my god, that was 10 years ago. AGH! I'm ancient. And for the record, the first boy I ever kissed (well, ever kissed and enjoyed it) was an Aussie boy I met there. All together now: Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 11:12 PM) No. Basically when I talked to Jason, all he wanted to know was how hot the Aussie Chicks were. Not as hot as the Aussie Boys are.

Linkage Vatican: Faithful Should Listen to Science By NICOLE WINFIELD, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 4 minutes ago VATICAN CITY - A Vatican cardinal said Thursday the faithful should listen to what secular modern science has to offer, warning that religion risks turning into "fundamentalism" if it ignores scientific reason. Cardinal Paul Poupard, who heads the Pontifical Council for Culture, made the comments at a news conference on a Vatican project to help end the "mutual prejudice" between religion and science that has long bedeviled the Roman Catholic Church and is part of the evolution debate in the United States. The Vatican project was inspired by Pope John Paul II's 1992 declaration that the church's 17th-century denunciation of Galileo was an error resulting from "tragic mutual incomprehension." Galileo was condemned for supporting Nicolaus Copernicus' discovery that the Earth revolved around the sun; church teaching at the time placed Earth at the center of the universe. "The permanent lesson that the Galileo case represents pushes us to keep alive the dialogue between the various disciplines, and in particular between theology and the natural sciences, if we want to prevent similar episodes from repeating themselves in the future," Poupard said. But he said science, too, should listen to religion. "We know where scientific reason can end up by itself: the atomic bomb and the possibility of cloning human beings are fruit of a reason that wants to free itself from every ethical or religious link," he said. "But we also know the dangers of a religion that severs its links with reason and becomes prey to fundamentalism," he said. "The faithful have the obligation to listen to that which secular modern science has to offer, just as we ask that knowledge of the faith be taken in consideration as an expert voice in humanity." Poupard and others at the news conference were asked about the religion-science debate raging in the United States over evolution and "intelligent design." Intelligent design's supporters argue that natural selection, an element of evolutionary theory, cannot fully explain the origin of life or the emergence of highly complex life forms. Monsignor Gianfranco Basti, director of the Vatican project STOQ, or Science, Theology and Ontological Quest, reaffirmed John Paul's 1996 statement that evolution was "more than just a hypothesis." "A hypothesis asks whether something is true or false," he said. "(Evolution) is more than a hypothesis because there is proof." He was asked about comments made in July by Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, who dismissed in a New York Times article the 1996 statement by John Paul as "rather vague and unimportant" and seemed to back intelligent design. Basti concurred that John Paul's 1996 letter "is not a very clear expression from a definition point of view," but he said evolution was assuming ever more authority as scientific proof develops. Poupard, for his part, stressed that what was important was that "the universe wasn't made by itself, but has a creator." But he added, "It's important for the faithful to know how science views things to understand better." The Vatican project STOQ has organized academic courses and conferences on the relationship between science and religion and is hosting its first international conference on "the infinity in science, philosophy and theology," next week.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:03 PM) I saw that and started laughing. How many other qualified people has the government hired and placed in important positions? And I know Bush isn't the first President to have a loser in such a position, but this is clearly over the top. Tex, you're from CHICAGO--land of pork barrelling. Do you really wonder how often this happens? I thought we all KNEW.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 09:32 PM) Booze is the ultimate date rape drug. I dont have stats but Im willing to bet that the use of "roofies" as an MO is pretty tiny. I agree that alcohol is the most common date rape drug. (Which is why you legally can't give consent while drunk or under the influence of any drug.) Roofies as in rohypnal (spelled wrong) okay, I'll also grant you that would be rare (although I've known two people that it happened to). But I promise you any medicine cabinet in America has something that could be slipped in a drink and used as a date rape drug.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 09:28 PM) In the cases where the victim does not know the victim Im willing to bet that at least half of them involve a Natalee Holloway version where some floozy gets wasted in a bar , goes home with drunk, horny guy(s) and bad things result. Mercy. Please forgive those who display enough common sense to know that when you're drunk and your friends aren't around that its a really bad idea to run off with a bunch of strangers. We're not dickheads, we just know better and cant help but marvel at how utterly stupid some people can be. Because I'm sure date rape drugs are never a factor in these types of situations. :rolly

QUOTE(Mercy! @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 09:09 PM) I see this thread as an example of immense progress. Only four dickheads (so far) thought the subject of gang rape was a good subject for a joke or a blame the victim statement. We’ve come a long way, baby. I only count 3, and I really f***ing hope you aren't counting me in with their ilk. After doing education on this topic for 3 years to all incoming college freshman (yes, boys too) are these attitudes surprising? Nope. Have I heard worse? Yep. Do these "stranger danger" type articles and news stories divert attention from more common, insidious and horrific stories of acquaintence rape? Yep. Do I think that comments like, she's dumb for doing it and should have seen it coming (although, tempered by the, but they should still go to jail) as damaging to rape victims as the actual rape? Yep.

You must be new here, this is actually the least victim blaming thread we've ever had.

Here's my question. Over 80% of rapes committed are committed by someone the victim knows. Why don't we hear about those? Why do we only hear about the ones where it's "easy" to say, stupid girl, what a dumb slut? Easier to create a big to do about something where we can blame the victim than admit something similar could happen to a friend, a girlfriend or ourselves.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 08:36 PM) ok, I wasn't saying he was right. I just was puking at the fact that it's even remotely true. Fair enough.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 08:11 PM) I heard Dr Phil talking last night on Leno that they have reason to believe Natalie Hollaway's still alive and may very well be working as a sex slave. /puke... /crying... /anger... no wait, the anger is still there. I say this with Love: Dr. Phil is a f***ing moron.

What was the prompt of the assignment? If it was to write a personal essay, then I would say you deviated from it. You didn't establish a strong tie as to WHY the Sox are so important to you--and focused more on a single game as opposed to creating a holistic view that incorporates the Sox into your everyday life and intrinsic self. Without posting the actual prompt of the assignment it's difficult to say if the professor's assessment is off. Additionally, you should try varying your sentence structure. S-V-P is so cliche. (And, for the record, yes, I have written an essay about the Sox. And, yes, I did get an A on it.)

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 06:59 PM) Only anthropologists really care about "Carbon" dating. You want the real fun of the earth...you need to talk about more general radiometric dating, using far more isotopes than just C-14. Ooh I'm just itching for another quality evolution thread. I met a boy today who is a geo-chemist. He told me a lot of interesting research in that field I changed the subject as fast as I could.

QUOTE(DePloderer @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 06:56 PM) I sloan is a girl (usualy) who has had a private education paid for by Daddy and feels she's got it rough when Mummy will only let her have one horsey and not that cute one over there as well and Daddy thinks she ought to get a job, "to give her something to do between manicure appointments." Thank you! My life now makes complete sense. That must be an English phrase, no one in Scotland knew what it was. They thought I was being daft.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 06:50 PM) Is that better or worse than being a sod? I don't know. But I've never gotten a good answer to this question: What the hell is a Sloane? I've heard people called that and read it, but what the hell does it mean?
