QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 11:58 PM) Better than Joe Cocker's version?? C'mon, Tom Jones is smooooooth man. Whenever I hear Joe Cocker I think of Belushi imitating him on SNL--not a feel good image. . .

For my money, there's no better feel good song than, "You can leave your hat on" by Tom Jones. . .

Linkage Cardinal removes 11 priests over sexual abuse Tribune staff report Published September 26, 2005, 1:33 PM CDT Cardinal Francis George today announced 11 priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago would be permanently removed from public ministry over allegations of sexual misconduct with minors. "In each of the 11 cases, Cardinal George has determined, based on the information presented, that sexual misconduct did occur," the archdiocese said in a prepared statement issued today. Each individual no longer can participate in public ministry, present himself as a priest or act as an agent of the archdiocese. Their names and specifics of the allegations against them were not disclosed, nor was information immediately available if any had been charged criminally. The cardinal's actions followed a two-year review of the cases of 14 Chicago-area priests by the Vatican. Disciplinary action was approved in 11 cases. The cases of two priests were referred to canonical trials, which are pending. One case was moot because the priest had died. The Chicago archdiocese paid $18.2 million in settlements for sexual abuse cases last year. Since 2002, 19 of its priests have been removed from ministry. The cardinal's actions were consistent with the church's "zero tolerance" position, which bans sexually abusive priests from ministry to protect children from abuse. In a June interview, George, vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, voiced his support for zero tolerance. "We've all had the experience, of several years, of working with this. The norms have served us well. And I think most bishops understand that," George said. "If the sexual abuse is very clear, this makes somebody, from my perspective, unsuitable for ministry, and so that remains the case." Bishops drafted the rule, also referred to as the "one-strike policy," in 2002 amid waves of abuse allegations and charges of church cover-ups. The policy became part of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. After a two-year trial period during which nearly 700 abusive priests were removed from public ministry, the bishops voted overwhelmingly in June to renew for five years the charter and a related canonical law document for handling abuse, the Essential Norms.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 05:33 PM) I know the property is being bought up for top dollar (good for your grandparents), We've not sold it yet, but it's one of the VERY few farms (albeit only 5 acres) that hasn't been sold. Partly because my uncles won't get their s*** out of there, but whatever. That's probably helping the value increase further. Do you know how the property taxes work on that? Like, if you live in Joliet but your kids go to Plainfield--who gets the money?

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 12:48 PM) For those of us who are more rational & conservative minded Yes, oh God yes, yes, yes, yes! That gave me the BEST laugh I have had in ages. Oh, I feel so much better now.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 05:28 PM) And Naperville 203 should be way above $100K if it's based on income also I would think. Most of the homes sold in that district are in the upper $500K to low $800K. I don't know, I mean, I think the website you posted is kind of decptive. Places like Oswego have pretty variable pay rates--but the most senior teachers (looked up my old ones) are making around 100,000. But the average rate is dragged waaaaaaaay down by the HUGE amount of new teachers because the area is growing and adding schools so rapidly. So, I don't know if averages are the best option because it doesn't tell the whole story. And school administrators, I agree way overpaid. Give that money to the poor fools in the trenches.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 05:25 PM) If that was the case then the Joliet $$ is waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy lopsided. Yeah, but look at all those new developments in Joliet--I mean they are annexing a lot of land and getting really nice housing built onto them. And some of the older parts aren't that bad. I know my grandparents farm (recently annexed into Joliet) is worth a whole hell of a lot. Although, I'm not sure how that split works, since a lot of those kids in "Joliet" go to Plainfield and the surrounding schools.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 05:21 PM) Jim's daughter is a counselor in Bolingbrook making $28K, his son's wife is one in Romeoville making $32K. Would those area's be considered wealthy.. I'm not sure, but I know there are neighborhoods in both where $300K houses are the norm. A girlfriend of mine is a teacher in Chicago making just over $60K (been teaching for just under 10 years). I wouldn't call Lyons "wealthy" but the average there is among the highest at $80K and the Admin average in Joliet shocks me at $99K. I always got the impression that the "rougher" the job, the more they made. I was always under the impression that average income in the community/house prices were positively correlated teacher pay.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) I dont know about that. When I was in HS, overalls were the rage with girls, now its hipphuggers and thongs. Yeah, they're dressing older, but I can still tell the young ones. To me 14 doesn't look like 18. (Of course, a lot of my students are still in their late teens, so that helps me judge age.) But I agree with what you said earlier--a lot of kids these days are NOT dressing in age appropriate attire.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 05:12 PM) The list of all of them is way long, but there are some making in the 30k range in Illinois. And I bet they aren't in the wealthy suburbs. To me, that's just another example of classism and the wealth divide in this nation.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) This just follows up my notion of kinds these days looking and acting way older than they are. I am not the oldest of the old, but when I was that age, girls and guys werent acting and dressing like they are now. A 14 year old girl nowadays looks almost 20, its hard to tell the difference. Their sexual activity has advanced as well. I think alot of the changes have to do with parenting and being involved in your childs life as a role model. If they dont have you to look up to, they will find someone else, a peer, TV etc. Where oh where have all the parents gone? Or maybe you're just getting old? Seriously, though, I think how old someone appears to you is definitely related to your own age. To me, I can definitely tell which of my students are 18 as opposed to my 22 year old ones. And I can still accurately pinpoint highschooler's age. (Except, possibly I think I generally guess they're younger than they actually are.)

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) Variety is wrong when its done just for the sake of variety and no other reason. But in the case of the SC, there are lots of qualified men and women--there's no ONE right answer. So, I say use a pick that will, perhaps, reflect more the make-up of the country and give voice to a relatively voiceless population.

QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 12:42 PM) If the probation includes being unable to see her daughter for the next 10 years then it will feel like a VERY long time to her....which is the least they should do this mentally unstable woman. Yeah, but not being able to see her for 10 years AND being in jail would feel even longer. People like this woman make me so sick.

Boooooo, you whore! I thought this story was going to be about Universal Grammar. Now my day is ruined. . .

Westchester County, N.Y., Judge Rory Bellantoni said he would sentence her to 10 years probation that would include her time served in jail. Uh, what? Put that woman in jail for a veeeeeeeeery long time!

1-0. Sad I made it to only one game, but happy it was a win. (It was the game at the end of the Yankees series where we avoided the sweep at home)
