  1. I'm hijacking this thread. Flaxx--have you read any evolutionary Psychology (or Sociobiology, though they're rather different--at least according to evopsychs). Any thoughts on those behavioral type theories of evolution?
  2. QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 11:40 AM) If I had to choose which president I would want my back in a fight, it would probably be Jackson... maybe Lincoln, I heard he was actually a very good wrestler. Yeah, but Teddy Roosevelt and I would win that fight any day of the week.
  3. I like Clinton's first inaugural address.
  4. Home Run Inn--thank God I don't live near Chicago anymore, because I would eat those every damn day. Other than that I'm not a fan. I don't even remember the last time I ate pizza. . .

    LET'S MAKE A LIST

QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:27 AM) You're right. I think it would be fun to hear BigEdWalsh and FlaSoxxJim tell us about going to see double features for a nickle and how orchestras were way better then talkies Quiet you! The Marx brothers were a staple of my childhood! Unfortunately, none of my students laugh when I make any jokes from there. Uncultured buffoons! Sanity Clause? Everyone knows there's no Sanity Clause!
  6. An awesome idea from my two faves. I totally, wholeheartedly, and unequivocally agree!
  7. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 26, 2008 -> 08:04 PM) It's amazing how many girls are getting cosmetic surgery that are younger than that, or just as old. I'm only 20, and I know 4 girls off hand that have had it done, and 2 of them were high school grad presents. That is so sad.
  8. I love it. I think it's really well written and is biting without being mean, cruel or derivative. I was going to post it here, but I think a few posters will not find it as amusing and I didn't want to deal with that. . . EDIT TO ADD: I just read the Dinner Parties post and, as I am planning one, I can't stop giggling. Because it is so on the mark.
  9. QUOTE(knightni @ Mar 14, 2008 -> 03:54 PM) and "oker". That took me a second. Well played.
  10. So, prostitution can't be the world's oldest profession because if it was, how did people pay them? They couldn't have without any goods and services which would have to have been procured through some sort of work. I believe a great pair of philosophers put it best when they said: The difference between a hooker and a ho ain't nothing but a fee.
  11. QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Less harmful then say carrots? Less harmful then water? Unless you are going to argue that pot is beneficial, these comparisons are meaningless. Well, that certainly is your opinion.
  12. QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) Unless you are going to argue it is good for you, the a,lcohol comparison is worthless. But I'm glad you found the time to pick up that medical degree while in law school Come on, look at the pharmacological effects of weed versus booze--no contest that pot is less harmful. None.
  13. So, sidebar, but the article currently up in the NYT makes it sound like Spitzer was a difficult client who would ask his, um, hired help to do things that weren't considered safe. . .
  14. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 03:35 PM) The Lt. Governor, David Paterson, of Harlem would be Spitzer's replacement. Trivia about Paterson: he's blind. Is he actually resigning? I really don't understand how he could be this much of a dumb ass. I mean, seriously, wtf are you thinking? I hope that hooker was mind-blowing, because you just ruined your life idiot.
  15. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) Spitzer's kind of been a big mess in office. Do they have to have a special election in NY State? Why is it that right before I move to a state, a Governor resigns due to a sex scandal? Wait a second homeslice, where in NY are you moving?
  16. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 03:18 PM) Well, we'll see what media attention this gets. It will be big news because it's SEX and it's high profile, but it would be "an embarassment of epic proportions" if it was Spitzer (REP). But I don't have to say that. It's all over the NYT and the Trib. Spitzer is totally f***ed. At least he won't have to pay for it this time. . . It's a shame, he had a lot of promise. But I've not read that he's resigning (yet).
  17. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) Who would have thought 2 years ago in early 2006 that 2 years later the Democrats would control the seats of both Tom Delay and Dennis Hastert? I grew up in Kendall county, and I still can't believe that seat isn't republican. Seriously. I thought my parents were joking yesterday when they told me.
  18. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Mar 4, 2008 -> 12:23 PM) ok, that's twice I've seen this. It's "You're Welcome" right? You are welcome not Your Welcome. Soxy? I've been pushing for bad grammar banning for years.
  19. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Mar 1, 2008 -> 03:18 PM) Stupidity, parents who always tell them they are 'special', or the direct opposite that they are 'worthless', how about the lack of shame for being an unwed mother? It used to be a bad thing, not people actually seek it out! I would point out how sexist this is. But, I just don't care anymore.

    Films Thread

Just saw The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Wow. It really was a piece of art. Sad, funny, supremely moving. But it gives you the sensation of if you sat and read an entire Camus novel in one sitting--a little bit too much existence too quickly. If that makes sense. Definitely recommended. (Although I did have a slight horrible flashback to Un Chien Andalou at one point in the film--which was a little ickers.)
  22. http://www.losanjealous.com/nfc/ http://garfieldminusgarfield.tumblr.com/ The funniest things I've seen in a very long time.
  23. Oxford English Dictionary--just peruse around there and you will find more words than you could possibly use.
  24. Ach N Lou's in Aurora. Every time I go home, I make sure we go there at least once. It's thin crust, but oh, it's sooooooooooooo good. I also have a soft spot for Home Run Inn. I will occasionally have deep dish (usually when entertaining out of town guests), but it's usually far too heavy for me.
