QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 12:14 AM) If anyone is interested, Rainn Wilson(Dwight) is hosting SNL tonite with Arcade Fire as the musical guest How pathetic is SNL when they can write a script that not even Rainn Wilson can make funny. . .

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 08:13 PM) I saw them with his johnson blurred. If they are indeed her, Idol will have something to think about. If they are indeed wanting to keep a family image, they may have to get rid of her. Didn't they get rid of a contestant who had some topless pictures of her floating around. This sounds waaaaaay more extremem than that.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 04:26 PM) Michael I agree with. I think that was right up Dwights alley though, if you watch him, he is drinking the entire night. Now we know what Dwight does when he is hammered. I thought Dwight was fantastic, especially when he popped up in the back seat after Jan and Michael were "fighting", and when he was in the kids room. The Dwight thing cracked me up and seemed so reasonable to me. My dad does that stuff to a lesser extent when he is at other people's houses (checks the sturdiness of rails, checks the studs, checks windows and walls). So, I loved that Dwight was doing that.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 02:46 PM) It is just an observation about Grant, that's all. To me, he seems like the same guy in every film, kinda typecast. Has anyone seen that documentary about a guy trying to get a date with Drew Barrymore? He kind of broke out of the bumbling affiable Englishman with About a Boy and Bridget Jones; but he seems to have returned to those parts with Love, Actually and 2 Weeks Notice (and to a lesser extent Music and Lyrics). I read somewhere he actually doesn't like to play the stammering guy because that's not who he is and he finds those nice guys uninteresting. And, to be honest, I think I actually liked him better in About a Boy and the first Bridget Jones where he is less of a "rube" than he is in most of his RomComs. But I agree Kid, he is great.

I saw Half Nelson last night. It was a very Indie movie and definitely had that Indie vibe to it. The movie was uneven, I thought. The acting was good, Ryan Nelson deserved that Oscar nomination, and I thought the girl that played Drey was also really good. The major problem I had with the film was that it just couldn't keep my attention. I felt like the acting was too good for the direction they received and the way the film was cut and, basically, the way the story was told. The movie was also a lot funnier than I expected (more funny in a Welcome to the Dollhouse way, than anything else). Not a bad rental movie, but I'm glad I didn't pay full movie price for it.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 06:14 AM) Has Hugh Grant ever played an American in a film? Not in any movie I've ever seen. I scanned his IMDB page, but none of the random one's I've never seen looked like he played an American.
  7. It's not technically a board game, but. . .Apples to Apples is amazing--I love it! Curses! Is also good.
  8. Awwwww, poor baby. My dad recently got bifocals. He said it took about two weeks to adjust and after that he said it was great and he had no problems. But I've still got my better than perfect 20/10 vision.

    American Idol

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 11:49 AM) Idol is becoming boring. Teletubby references included. I agree. I fell like 75% of the contestants are totally interchangeable. And they're all sort of a pop brand--some have a little different flavor, but essentially they're all pretty poppy in their sound. No real country or rock or anything. Bleh. That being said, I did really enjoy LaKisha and Melinda and I was pleasantly surprised by Gina (I thought she would be awful, but her mediocrity impressed me).
  10. QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Feb 20, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) All joking aside...Personally I think there are actually serious issues here. I believe this is more than a "spoiled rich girl with a drug problem" She could be suffering from an extreme case of Post Partum depression. Many women, stronger and more stable than her have succumbed to it. It's not a pretty sight and a serious illness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postpartum_depression I do think post-partum is a very likely contender. I also wonder if she has been doing stimulants to first lose the baby weight and then to keep it off. I wouldn't be surprised if both of those turned out to be true. I really feel for her kids.

    Bad crash in Oswego

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 20, 2007 -> 03:22 PM) Not that it is right, but people have to go to school, they choose to get in the car with a drunk driver. Perhaps unfairly, we place some blame on the victim in this case. It's just annoying that something as commonplace as drunk driving doesn't get the outrage and media attention of other stuff. I know those kids chose to get the in car, but, well, they're dips*** kids. I just get so incredibly frustrated that there isn't more outrage about drunk driving. It just boggles my mind. I feel like, in general, people who drive drunk are in public before they get in the car. They're around people, they're at weddings, bars, etc. It's just ridiculous that no one stops them. Going into a bar, I have to stop, show my id, get my handstamped/wrist banded whatever. Would it be that hard to breathalyze people as they leave bars? I am just absolutely flabbergasted by how prevelant drunk driving is, and how little people seem to do to prevent it. And, this is not 100% verified, but the friends of my family (whose son was injured in the crash) said that around 2am at the night of the party, the adults that were renting the house in the Oswego party came back. Instead of calling the kids' parents, or taxis, or the police, the people just kicked the kids out (in the middle of a freezing February night) with no concern or responsibility about how that many teenagers would go home. Had that homeowner done anything remotely responsible this whole thing could have been averted. It's just disgusting.

    Bad crash in Oswego

I think one of the things that bothers me the most about this, is that if this 23 year old had walked into OHS with a gun and shot 8 teenagers this would be all over the news. Instead, she killed 5 of them by driving drunk and it's a local news story. I don't know anyone that has died or been injured in a school shooting, but I've lost 3 friends and 2 family members to drunk driving. I just wish this would get the type of coverage that a shooting would. The kids in this car's death was no less violent (or avoidable) than if they had been shot. It just drives me up the wall.

I went and saw Music and Lyrics with a couple of girlfriends over the weekend. Very different from the Oscar stuff we've been seeing lately. It was your typical Romantic comedy, the writing was somewhat zippier than most, and there were a couple of good one liners in there. Drew Barrymore annoyed me. But I've always had a thing for Hugh Grant, and I don't mind any movie that I can watch him in for an hour and a half. Also, I love those 80s music and how hilariously awful their music videos were, so that also made it fun to watch. As far as RomComs go, probably middle to slightly above average.

5th teen dies. My parents went and visited the boy I used to babysit (family friends), and heard from his parents that the McGee had some serious TBI and spinal cord injuries--and they weren't sure he would make it. So, I'm not surprised that this has happened.

  16. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 02:30 PM) I'm not laughing. I might have smiled once. I laughed at the spelling of the title, does that count?
  17. QUOTE(mreye @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 01:49 PM) She hasn't asked. I don't know if she even know we're going. She knows about wakes and funerals, though. (We live next to a funeral home) I think she can handle it. I guess the reason I ask is I don't want to be looked at funny by taking her. If it was her grandfather or someone closer I don't think people would think twice about it, but someone that's not a blood relative... I don't think it would be odd. My maternal grandparents both died recently and a lot of people brought kids (even some that weren't related to us) and the kids were a really nice diversion for us (the family). And they bring cheer and life to an otherwise not so cheerful and lively situation.
  18. I was around 4 when I went to my first wake (grandpa then two aunts in succession). It sounds like she has a good understanding about death and has a healthy way to deal with it (her conversations with you and prayer). I don't necessarily think a wake will bring closure, but I think it's always healthy to have a place and time where grief can be expressed and shared. As twisted as it sounds, I think that my parents taking me to a lot of wakes when I was little (my grandmother was from a large family, so from age 4 on, I probably went to about a wake a year) really helped me understand death and have a healthy perspective on grief. I remember at my first wake my grandmother said, when I was viewing the body/casket that "It's not really Pops, that's just a shell and he is in heaven." It was a good explanation and I think it helped me move on and not see death as some scary thing that just takes people away and never getting to say goodbye. So, if you think she can handle then I think it's a good idea.

    Bad crash in Oswego

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 09:42 AM) I had a college roommate killed by a drunk driver between my sophomore and junior years. I remember not believing the person who was telling me what had happened. It was so surreal, even through the funeral and everything. It took forever to set it. I'm so sorry. My first year of college 5 of my friends that were a year ahead were going to spend their spring break volunteering in St. Louis. 3 of them were killed by a drunk driver on the way down. It was horrible, one of my friends called me to tell me over Spring break. It was just such a shame. And so completely perventable. Apparently the drunk driver was driving THE WRONG WAY down a freeway, and the police had been called and were looking for him. Very few things make me as angry and upset as drunk driving. Very few. I feel so bad for the kids, especially the ones that the youngest victim tried to call to get a ride home from. And for the ones that survived. What a tragedy.

    Bad crash in Oswego

Link If you all find time, I would really appreciate it if you could send some warm thoughts or prayers to these kids. I babysat one of the injured kids through most of junior high and high school, so I doubt there is really anyone in Oswego that isn't affected by this. Just really horrible. Four teens killed Oswego shocked; 5 hurt; DUI charged February 12, 2007 By MATT HANLEY Christine Moyer and Andre Salles Staff writers OSWEGO -- Four Oswego teenagers died and five other people were injured Sunday when a car struck a utility pole on Route 31 north of Route 34 . Eight of the nine victims attended Oswego High School. The ninth person, the driver of the vehicle, was Sandra Vasquez, 23, of Montgomery. She has been charged with drunken driving, police said. All nine people were riding in a four-door sedan when the accident occurred at 2:20 a.m., said Oswego Police Detective Rob Sherwood. The speed limit in that area of Route 31 is 45 mph. Accident reconstruction specialists are trying to determine the speed of the vehicle at the time of the crash, Sherwood said. "It was a mess of a scene," said Sherwood. "We'll have to talk to the survivors and see what happened." Katherine Merkel, 14; Tiffany Urso, 16; Jessica Nutoni, 15; and Matthew Frank, 17, all of Oswego, were pronounced dead at the scene, Sherwood said. The other occupants of the car were taken to hospitals. Joshua Dillon, 16, of Oswego, was taken by helicopter to Loyola Hospital in Maywood, although officials there offered no information. Robert Larson, 15, of Oswego, was taken by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, and his condition remained critical late Sunday. Police said James McGee, 14, of Oswego was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, although officials there would neither confirm nor deny that information. Arielle Rexford, 16, of Oswego, and Vasquez were taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. Rexford's condition was listed as fair, while Vasquez was listed in critical condition. In addition to the DUI charge against Vasquez, other charges are likely, Oswego police said. Kendall County State's Attorney Eric Weis said that he expects further charges to be brought as soon as today. Sherwood said the relationship between the students and Vasquez remains unclear. No one contacted by The Beacon News knew why the eight teens were in Vasquez's car after midnight. A crisis team was being set up by the Oswego School District to help students and families deal with the tragedy. Information will be posted at www.oswego308.org. School will be open this morning, Superintendent David Behlow said. Behlow encouraged parents to send their children to school, because the School District will have the appropriate resources in place to help the students. "Every fatal accident is devastating. But the number of kids we lost is shocking and devastating," Behlow said. "Our hearts go out to the children and to the friends and to the families whose children were victims." The 2001 Infiniti driven by Vasquez was southbound on Route 31 between Mill Road and Washington Street (Route 34). The car crossed into the northbound lane, then slid sideways and struck a utility pole on the east side of the road near the intersection of Route 31 and River Run Boulevard. Sherwood said he did not think that weather was a factor, and he said that he considers that stretch of road to be "relatively straight." "I don't know what word you would use to describe (the car). It was totaled," Sherwood said. The pole was sheared off at the bottom, but stayed connected to the power lines. Sherwood said the impact on the pole was centered on the driver's side of the vehicle. According to Sherwood, only Vasquez was ejected from the vehicle upon impact. The other eight passengers remained trapped in the car. He said that the roof of the car had been removed when he arrived, but he remained uncertain whether it had been cut off by rescue personnel, or sheared off by the impact. Damage to the utility pole caused a power outage that lasted nearly two hours and affected about 1,500 people, said ComEd spokeswoman Judy Rader. A section of Route 31 was temporarily closed Sunday as police investigated. By early afternoon the road, a major north-south highway, was open in both directions. It is not clear how many, if any, of the people in the car were wearing seat belts. "There were nine people crammed in that car," Sherwood said. "We don't know if they had seat belts on or if they were doubled up. Who knows what they did." Jim Detzler, deputy Kendall County coroner, said he arrived at the crash scene at 4:15 a.m. He said the four victims pronounced dead at the scene died from blunt force trauma. "It seems like a case of driving too fast too late at night," Detzler said. "Just a tragic accident." Oswego Village President Craig Weber said he knew the Dillon family from Oswego Presbyterian Church on Route 25, where they were all members. He described them as an "outstanding family" that was "very actively involved in the church." "We haven't had a tragedy like this in the community for several years," Weber said. On Sunday afternoon, Matt Allseitz, a 17-year-old Oswego High School student, was among the teens huddling around four white crosses perched in snow on the side of Route 31 across from the River Run subdivision. "It's just, I mean, it's crazy, seeing this in real life," Allseitz said, shivering in a brown hooded sweatshirt and shorts.

I actually missed the Ryan/Kelly bit, so I'll have to catch it when my sister gets the dvds. I loved Karen singing at the end. I really like her. And, I might be the only girl in the world who thinks this, but I'm glad Pam and Roy got back together. I think he kind of deserved a second chance.
