QUOTE(Brian @ Dec 11, 2006 -> 10:31 AM) Came out November 14th. I'm hoping to get it for X-mas. Bad thing about those DVDs is that they change the music in a lot to save money on copyrights. I'm not going to lie, I have all 4 seasons that are out so far, and I am super looking forward to the 5th season. I loved that show. And I had a huge crush on Dr. Beckett. Hurray for the final season coming out!

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:00 PM) So that's what the other side of an F grade looks like No, F's this time! (First time for me as an instructor.) Go team! My little students were all very smart and did all the work. They warmed my hardened academic heart.

Don't we have one of the highest infant mortality rates in the industrialized world too? I think lack of insurance really hurts the unborn the most in this country--no pre-natal care = awful. -
QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 11:58 AM) The new Tylenol Cold products are excellent. The Nighttime knocked me out for 8 hours and the Daytime stuff is keeping my cough from overwhelming my day. And the flavor burst adds an unexpected twist on an old favorite!

Oh, Dandy Warhols and early Liz Phair, how do you always manage to put me in a better mood?

I voted for Rex, I thought his answers were thoughtful and I think he would be good at surrounding himself with "people in the know" to help him make decisions. I also liked his tax plan, and I think, in general, politically, we're very alike. But, I will say, this whole thing actually gave me a tons of more respect for the other candidates. Especially NSS72, Tex and PA, so well done.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 04:31 PM) I said, 'substitute Mexican, black, republican, etc instead of Muslim, and start the same type of show, you would get the same type of responses" You then took it as me saying Republicans are discriminated against like Muslims. If one were to start a radio show on a liberal station with the same type of rant that the host here did, yes, you would get similar responses. There is an element of society that will say/do anything to get on tv or radio, so you would get similar responses almost with any group put in there. I understand the point, and I think that's valid. But I imagine the volume of calls would be a LOT less if Republicans were the subject of the rant. I also imagine there would be a lot more calls of support FOR republicans if the tirade was against them.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 04:06 PM) you're right soxy. Republicans are racist as Democrats are so tolerant of all views and people. that radio show obviously proves you correct. well done. not My comment was not at all about that. My comment was saying that Republicans aren't discriminated against like muslims are. I'm not even sure how republicans being racist came into this.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 02:34 PM) Soxy, call up an Air America show, if you can still get one, and have a host start a similar discussion, and you will get worse. I am referring to the sheep mentality that some people have in regards to radio shows, people who will call in a parrot whatever a host says, and then some, just 'because'. And it isn't limited to 'ditto'. But I will say, I haven't heard callers on Medved call for anyone to be assassinated or killed just for their politics, like I have on Randi Rhode's Air America show. I don't have any of those stations. And I'm sorry, but I don't believe for ONE second that even on Air America people would phone in support for the branding of republicans (ALL republicans) or support their banishment. Comparing the current attitude towards republicans to the rampant anti-muslim sentiment in this country is just ignorant. There is absolutely NO WAY that is a relevant comparison. None whatsoever.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 10:56 PM) A picture is worth 1,000 words I don't have a digital copy of it. But if I scan it in, I will post a copy of it. She's a real cutie (with a Santa phobia).

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 09:36 AM) The sad thing is he is probably right. Substitute Mexican, Jew, black or Republican for Muslim, and you would probably get the same response. Or Democrat, right? I mean, the prejudice against Republicans and democrats is easily on par with what Muslims, Jews, Latinos and other minorities encounter everyday. Please.

A local pet store let you bring in your pets and then they took pictures of it with Santa (all proceeds going to the local humane society shelter, where one of my cats is from). I took my very hyper and loving (and huge 77lb) dog in. She was TERRIFIED of Santa and kept trying to run away from him. It took like 5 minutes to get the picture. By the end there were like 10 people around just watching some people had gotten squeeker toys and were squeeking trying to get her to stop staring at Santa in fear and look at the camera. We finall got a picture of her trying to army crawl away while Santa looks warily at the camera trying to hold on to the humungous dog. At least she didn't look totally terrified in the final result. So much for her winning the cutest pet $250 gift basket. Dang.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 2, 2006 -> 01:02 PM) The vast majority do. And does your employer force you to work daily? Is there a reason you can't get a different job that offers you those benefits? I'm not opposed to unions. They were needed 50-75 years ago and grew way too powerful 25 years ago. I think they do some good and some bad, but it evens out in the end I'm sure. I have no problem with people coming together and demanding something they feel they're entitled to receive. Why don't you and your co-workers do that? My main problem is I have little sympathy for the hardships of life. You choose your path, you choose what you make of your life. If you decide to spend hundreds of thousands to get an advanced degree in a field notorious for low wages and poor benefits, well, you made a poor choice. Or, like me, you're taking a big risk. Thats what you do in life. Also, like another poster mentioned, more often than not the peope complaining about not getting enough from the government are the same people who buy/own ridiculous things. I used to work at a grocery store and would get the women with Link/Wic and food stamps (all welfare for food programs). They'd buy everything they could on whatever program they were on and then have a second cart full of premo items and drop 250-300 bucks on crap. Where did they get money to do that?. I understand your point, but when I look at my friends that don't have health insurance ALL are currently employed and most have college degrees. Unfortunately, since most of us are just starting out our professional careers we don't rank high enough on the totem pole to get good benefits. It's lucky that most of us are healthy due to our age, but it's still scary to know that we're only one medical emergency away from bankruptcy. I don't know if it's true but I heard (I think on NPR) that the amount of bankruptcies that occur as a result health probelems is on the rise. And yes, I did make a very conscious decision to go into academia. I made a decision to mortgage my present (live off of 15,000 pre-tax a year) for a (hopefully) better future. Isn't that exactly what the American dream is? Working hard to live a good solid life that offers contributions to society? When I get pissed off about the piss poor state of health care in this country, it's not on account of the layabouts who just want a handout (which I think is the MINORITY of the uninsured), but for the people that are working hard, doing their best and just scraping by. It's bulls*** that people like me, or Balta or QP's dad work hard day in and day out and have no real safety net in case we get sick (which, unfortunately isn't a path that was chosen). And in reference to your question, i do belong to a union, although it has little bargaining power with the state. But I am grateful for it's minor coverage that costs me about $10 a month. -

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 04:39 PM) You're right. My family members all invested in themselves, went to school, and have decent jobs that give them the choice of obtaining health insurance. They're not sitting around waiting for handouts. And before you ask, no, my parents weren't all that wealthy. They assisted three children in going to college as much as they could, but both of my siblings, and myself took out massive amounts of federal aid. I'm taking an extra 80k out to go to law school. I have zero sympathy for people who don't work for what is available. Me working my ass off and taking the risk of recieving these loans equates to me being able to go to a doctor I choose and get treated when I want to, instead of waiting next to the bum on the street who hasn't done a damned thing to deserve it. Goverment assistance to those that contribute? Sure. I'll sign up for that. Universal healthcare for everyone? Not a chance. What about the kids of those don't have healthcare? For the record, I have a masters and am currently employed, but I don't have dental or vision insurance. Nor are any x-rays or other imaging techniques available to me if I don't have pre-approval from my company. And should I ever need to be hospitalized, well, I don't even want to think about that. So, I think you can get off your high horse a bit, not everyone with advanced degrees and a history of hard work gets good healthcare coverage. On a somewhat related note, we didn't have decent health insurance until my dad (who has a college degree and has worked 50-60 hours a week my whole life) joined a union--which I imagine you're also against. -
My sister just called me to taunt me about having a snow day. (She's a special ed teacher.) We're supposed to get that storm tomorrow. But right now it's 65 and drizzly.
