My cousin got her great dane from a rescue, which is actually run by a good friend of the family. If you want, Steff, I can pm you her info. She does great dane and some other kind of rescue (but knows other people in the dog rescue line). Generally rescue is a great way to go because, most of the time, there's extensive background checking and matching to make sure the people that get the dogs are a good match and will be "life" companions. I'm sure there is a Beagle rescue aroudn Chicago (they seem to be a popular breed). I was actually thinking of going through a German Shephard rescue to get a dog, but another dog came up faster. Generally I consider rescues to be a better option than a shelter/pound. Edit to add Beagle rescue link: http://adopt-a-beagle.1-800-save-a-pet.com/

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) Yikes. But I'm sure that's part of their "healthier options" menu right? Oh hon, it's a SNACK. So, you have one of those around 10, then come back for your Big Mac, SuperSize Fries and Diet Coke at noon at dinner time. Ick.

Kierke (as I like to call him) was one of the first major European writers to embrace writing in the native tongue and not latin. In fact, he had to get permission to write his dissertation in Danish.

For the book I'm going to have to go with The House on Mango Street (by Sandra Cisneros). And honorary mention to A Raison in the Sun which, although a play, is a great piece of literature. And no Untouchables for the movie? Every time I travel abroad and people find out I'm from Chicago, that's always the first question. . .

Glad they found it. Norwegian police find Munch's "The Scream" OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegian police recovered "The Scream" and another stolen masterpiece by Edvard Munch on Thursday, two years after the works were seized from a museum by gunmen. "We are 100 percent certain they are the originals," police chief Iver Stensrud told a news conference. "The damage was much less than feared." "The Scream" depicts a terrified figure under a blood-red sky. The other, "Madonna," shows a bare-breasted woman with long black hair. Two armed men broke into the Munch Museum in Oslo in August 2004 and yanked the two works from the walls in front of dozens of terrified tourists. The paintings, both from 1893, have been missing even though three men were convicted in May of taking part in the theft and were sentenced to up to eight years in jail. Two of them were ordered to pay $122 million in damages.

The trib did a series on this ages ago. I've never been a huge fish fan, but I eat even less now. I've also heard (but not seen any scientific data yet) that the increase in mercury in food may be related to the increase in austism rates (take that fwiw, which may be nothing)

No words. . . Rumsfeld derides Iraq war critics Equates them with Nazi-era appeasers By Julie Hirschfeld Davis Tribune Newspapers: The Baltimore Sun Published August 30, 2006 WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld unleashed one of the Bush administration's most caustic assaults yet on war critics Tuesday, comparing such critics to Nazi-era appeasers and ramping up the GOP election-year attack against Democrats over national security. The verbal broadside is part of an emerging pattern in which President Bush, attempting to transform the war into a winning election theme for the Republican Party, is using surrogates to deliver the most stinging criticisms of Democrats while sticking to milder -- though no less disparaging -- rhetoric on the war himself. Speaking to the American Legion's annual convention in Salt Lake City, Rumsfeld warned against "moral and intellectual confusion." He said that "some seem not to have learned history's lessons" as the nation confronts new threats. He did not mention any names. "It seems that in some quarters, there is more of a focus on dividing our country than acting with unity against the gathering threats." Rumsfeld recited what he called the lessons of history, including the failure to confront Adolf Hitler in the 1930s. He quoted Winston Churchill as observing that trying to accommodate Hitler was "a bit like feeding a crocodile, hoping it would eat you last." "I recount this history because once again we face similar challenges in efforts to confront the rising threat of a new type of fascism," he said. Bush is to speak Thursday before the American Legion. Rumsfeld's remarks came as Vice President Dick Cheney was accusing unnamed critics of "self-defeating pessimism," the second time in two days he used that description. Earlier this month, Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, said Democrats were "obstacles" to national security. Bush has been quick to lash out at those who question his strategy in Iraq, but he couches his objections in the loftier terms of a statesman. He recently denounced Democratic calls for a U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq, but not before noting -- twice -- that they are "good, decent people." He told reporters last week he would never question the patriotism of his critics. By arming Cheney, Rove and Ken Mehlman, the national Republican chairman, with cutting barbs and sending them into conservative strongholds, GOP strategists hope to stoke the enthusiasm of a conservative base that gives them high marks for keeping the country safe. Bush's allies also hope it sows doubt among fence-sitters about Democrats' fitness to govern. Democrats have worked to tie Bush to his surrogates' harsh statements. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada, responding to Rumsfeld's speech in a statement Tuesday, said, "The Bush White House is more interested in lashing out at its political enemies and distracting from its failures than it is in winning the war on terror and in bringing an end to the war in Iraq."

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 05:37 PM) It really sucks for the family in the sense that this other guy isn't guilty of the crime they almost definitely committed. And does this guy get some sort of punishment for lying about something of this magnitude? I was mostly thinking of her brother, but yeah, why feel bad for him? I think that he should get a psych eval, because that guy is NOT all there.

I can't say I'm surprised at all by the latest twist. . . Sucks for the family, I really feel for them to feel like they might have resolution and then have that snatched away. . .

I went to the hall of fame yesterday, it was pretty cool (although it would have been cooler if I was a Yankee or Red Sox fan. . .). But it was cool to see Pods and Blum's bats from the games as well as Crede's glove. I got a little misty looking at the display and remembering the joy of last year. Unfortunately the Sox "locker" was right next to the Wrong Sox's locker, so I had a hard time getting through the crowds to see it, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Very cool experience, though, seeing the hall.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 10:39 AM) As little as it seems she still made a poor ethical choice. She should have, at the very least, told the parties involved about it and they could have requested she be replaced. Because she belongs to an organization that made a donation? Do you know the list of every charitable cause your church donates to? Or any professional organization you may belong to? Do you wholeheartedly support all of those causes? I don't really follow the logic of why she should be removed. . .
