QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 13, 2006 -> 09:06 AM) I am going to guess, that when all the details come out, he isn't special forces or a jujitsu master. I'm kind of envisioning Kip from Napoleon Dynomite. . . Would be absolutely terrifying though.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 12, 2006 -> 02:39 PM) I guess the focus groups said that calling it the Macaca rally was a bad idea. So, where is Macaca? This seems like the appropriate time to say: hurray for the Daily Show and Colbert Report being back!

If the aldermen knew Daley wasn't going to veto this bill it wouldn't have passed. I think the whole thing just stinks of politcal posturing and pandering (that they knew they wouldn't have to fulfull.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 12, 2006 -> 10:32 AM) That's funny, after he got done with you, he told me to kill sinners. Weird, huh? Times like these I'm glad I live more than a stone's throw away from Chicago

QUOTE(longshot7 @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 06:18 PM) No way. We have too many frivolous holidays (St. Patrick's Day, Columbus Day, King Day, Casmir Pulaski Day, President's Day, Labor Day, Easter) as it is. Get rid of them all, I say!! Jesus called, he says hi.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 05:23 PM) Oh I definitely agree 100% it's the stress free life that makes the difference. They have so little. They do so little (by that I mean they don't work 80 hours a week). Money isn't the root for them. And they seem to be totally happy and content. It's amazing. Link On a scale of 1 to 7, where 1 means "not at all satisfied with my life" and 7 means "completely satisfied," the people on Forbes magazine's list of the 400 richest Americans average 5.8—the same as the Inuit people in Greenland and the cattle-herding Masai of Kenya, who live in dung huts with no electricity or running water. Calcutta's slum dwellers score only a little lower, at 4.6. Saw that a couple of weeks ago, and seemed very relevant to Steff's point.

I had an 8am class on the other side of campus from my room. I remember what I was wearing and a bit of the class. It's an old building, my class was on the third floor, and as I was coming down the stairs to ground level there was just a crush of people watching the television. I was really confused about what was going on and why everyone was watching tv instead of going to class. It was really surreal, basically I just couldn't understand what the big deal was. I went pushed through the crowd to get to my second class of the morning and I think there was maybe 2-3 other people that were in class. The professor came in (I remember what she was wearing) and she was crying, on the screen was either a live news feed or just a still picture of the plane in the tower. So, she was really upset and said that she wouldn't be teaching that day, and that we could all stay together and watch together or we could leave. When I saw how upset she was, I think that was the first inkling I got that this was a very big deal. So, I walked back to my res hall, I remember the weather being very nice and crisp. I saw my friend Matt who was the leader of the college dems and he looked really just lost. I remember just sort of hugging him and feeling so confused. There were just masses of people around every television set on campus. I finally got back to my room and (it was less than a week after school started) and I didn't have a tv in my room. But I saw a girl down the hall watching her tv. I asked if I could watch with her, and we just sort of sat there on her futon just shocked watching the towers fall. I don't think I knew her name at that point. We didn't say anything to each other, just sat and watched. I don't remember any of the commentary, I just remember the color of Alex's hair, the blue sky outside, and the color of the smoke on the tv. After the second tower (I think) fell I called my dad. He was speechless and he said he had stopped work and was watching the tv along with the homeowners of the house he was watching. When he said he wasn't working, I think the enormity of what happened actually hit me. I started to cry, and I vividly remember saying, "We're going to war aren't we daddy?" After that I went to chapel (St. Olaf has daily chapel), it was packed, there was no room on any of pews and there were people sitting in the aisles and outside in the narthex of the church. The president of the college (who is from out east) talked and said we should pray and be in community with each other. I think he cried.

I don't think it should be a holiday. In fact, I think there is something almost beautiful about the country continuing to carry on and keep on track on the anniversary of such a tragedy. On a more cynical note, it will be interesting to see in 60 years how much people remember September 11th. My hunch is that much like previous dates that had a lot of history importance (V-E Day, Pearl Harbor, Normandy, Kennedy's assasination), it will fade into the collective unconcious and really only be mentioned in passing at the end of news shows.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 10:04 AM) BTW, if they banned too fat models, would that be ok? There are health risks for being too fat as well. I've never seen too fat models. But if I ever see a morbily obese woman modeling I would think the same things. Basically, though, I doubt that would happen. The reason models are so thin is because the clothes just hang on them, so you can really just see the clothes and not the body/shape underneath. Models are meant to be human coat hangers, so it wouldn't make sense to have a bigger person model high fashion. (Since this is fashion week I'm assuming everyone will be showing couture type clothing, not print models which is an entirely different type of model)

Link Madrid bans too-thin models from catwalk Fri Sep 8, 10:30 AM ET MADRID (AFP) - Excessively skinny fashion models will be barred from a major Madrid fashion show later this month for fear they could send the wrong message to young Spanish girls, local media reported. Madrid's regional government, which is co-financing the Pasarela Cibeles, has vetoed around a third of the models who took part in last year's show because they weigh too little. The authorities collaborated with a Spanish health organisation to come up with a minumum body mass -- a height-weight ratio -- of 18 for the models. Spanish daily ABC said it was the first time such restrictions had been imposed on a fashion show, although a recent wedding dress exhibition in Barcelona banned fashion models who took a dress size below 38 (British size 10, US size eight). Several models at last year's show provoked a row when they claimed their careers would be under threat if they put on weight. Organisers said they wanted to "help ensure public opinion does not associate fashion, and fashion shows in particular, with an increase in anorexia, a disease which, along with bulimia, is considered ... as a mental and behavioural problem". The event will take place on September 18-22

I think the whole dvd thing has totally changed the way I watch tv. For the last two years I either had no tv or only the big 4 (cbs, abc, nbc, fox), I got hooked on Veronica Mars last summer when ABC ran a few episodes to get more viewers. I liked the show, but couldn't watch last season because I didn't get that station. It's going to be weird to have a full week inbetween episodes.
-
Well it's season premiere time. What shows are you all looking forward to? I'm still mourning Arrested Development. I'm most excited about Veronica Mars (my double secret guilty pleasure). Love that show, reminds me ofold detective movies--well written, snappy, and just good. I'm also looking forward to the Office. Although, after re-watching the British Version (for the millionth time), I'm less excited. And it's not really a premiere, but I'm kind of excited about Six Feet Under being on Bravo, I've heard it's great but never seen it.

Very sad, and hard to believe. I feel for his family. The Trib is saying that a state funeral is being offered to the family.
