  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 07:57 AM) Honestly, I would have rather signed Pena at 1/$10 than PK at 3/$39 or whatever it is that we are supposedly offering. i see where you're coming from, I like Pena, but he's still a risk at this point after last year. I know he's two years off a hand injury now, but still, Sox seemingly going balls to the wall this year, not sure if Pena at that price would have been the ideal move.
  2. QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 08:00 AM) Yeah, those guys namaed Carpenter, Wainwright, Garcia, Gallardo, Cueto, Volquez, Arroyo, Leake, Chapman, Meyers, and Rodriguez are all terrible. Marcum isn't an ace, but what he did while pitching in the AL East last year was solid.
  3. it's an OK move by the Cubs, I expect Pena to have a solid bounce back year, however it doesn't magically make them a contender or anything like the media and Cubs fans will spin it... lots of old and bad contracts on that team still and their pitching still has some holes. I'm not so sure the deal is that over-market. It would have been a risk for a contending team to take Pena since his awful year last year but I'm sure teams who have had trouble spending their cash, Baltimore and Oakland jump to mind, would be willing to offer something just to get a FA at this point... also, Pena may have had 2/16 or 2/18 numbers out there but his camp felt he needs one year to bring his value back up.
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:19 AM) So as of right now we have pretty much the same exact offensive lineup from last year except Dunn replaces Kotsay...right? right, and the Kotsay to Dunn improvement is such an insane leap. I'm OK with the numbers, I wanted PK back at something reasonable and this seems it. We'll see if this is the final line-up though, KW still has over 3 months left, wouldn't be surprised if some other team bit on Q
  5. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 08:59 PM) So, Reinsdorf has now stepped into the negotiations to try and get a deal done. This thing is JR vs PK and KW is ready to move on... yeah, I have a feeling KW told Jerry his Plan B/C etc. are ready to go but might not be there by Thursday/Friday, so he better come in and see if he can salvage it.
  6. posted this in the MLB offseason thread, but makes more sense here... Heyman said Lee now has 2 seven year offers and NYY and Rangers weren't expected to go beyond 6... he has it tagged as "doublemysteryteams" or something of that ilk. totally left field, but how much revenue did Twins add with new stadium, any chance they are in on this?
  7. via Heyman, Lee has 2 seven year offers, said NYY and Rangers weren't expecting to go beyond 6, so might be 2 mystery teams
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:23 PM) Lee is younger than Konerko and has had nearly 200 more plate appearances than PK14 over the last 4 years, with the difference being that PK14 missed more due to injury. Real question with Lee is how is his wrist? I believe B & B said he had surgery in the offseason and many speculate if that's what was bugging him last year... So medicals for any team will have to be strong on him to see where his wrist is at.
  9. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:22 PM) Sox and PK will split the baby Solomon style. I still believe PK will be back with the Sox, but you cant hate him for squeezing every dime out of what may be his last huge pay day. I don't blame either side at this point, White Sox are going to have a bigger payroll next year and it's PK's last big deal, makes sense that each side pushes the boundaries and explores every option. I wonder if JR wasn't involved if KW would have just inked his Plan B at this point.
  10. Heyman just said PK's agent is pressing beyond what the Sox expected but optimism still there for a deal. That tells me no other team at this point has jumped in big on PK. Sounds like negotiations
  11. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:13 PM) don't blame him for wanting at least as much as Dunn, he's more productive and just plain better. from an offensive stand point he's not IMO. PK had a better year last year, but Dunn had better years 3 of the last 4, is younger and a far more consistent player. Again, hope PK resigns, but don't want to see the Sox overpay
  12. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) PK not signing is probably in the best interest of team success. PR on the otherhand... There is no way the Sox offered less than $36 million over three years (no info, just speculating). And that rate, the only disrespecting is Konerko demanding more. I would love to see the Sox sign Lee and then see Konerko get a shaft if this is all true about his $15 million mandate. I imagine PK and his agent are waiting for Crawford and Lee to sign and then see if a team with money that missed out on them offer them close to the 15m a year he wants, it's a risk because if all the pieces fall correctly and the White Sox wrapped up their plan B he may be left short on the money... however, if he's comfortable going to D'Backs for less, that will likely be open for him.
  13. Would love to see PK come back, but really glad to hear KW is moving ahead with Plan B, need to do what's best for team, and at this point it may not be waiting for PK
  14. Ratings are in via Meltzer, UFC did 1.4 SF a 1.2, but with the huge difference between Spike and Showtime for number of homes, UFC did about 2m viewers and SF did about 340k... the 340k is about in the middle between the SF Challenger cards and the SF cards with bigger names on it.
  15. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:30 PM) Cubs after LaRoche according to Jon Morosi. things like this are why KW and Sox are pushing for PK resolution, they have other plans in place and want to have a full plate of options if PK is going to leave
  16. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 01:58 PM) Heyman saying Lee has a 7 year deal not from Nats and Yankees are standing pat at 6 to this point, so either Rangers went to 7 which reports had them not wanting to do or their is a team that hasn't been mentioned a lot in bidding now It's an offer, he hasn't accepted anything, sorry, how I had it worded it could be misunderstood
  17. Heyman saying Lee has a 7 year deal not from Nats and Yankees are standing pat at 6 to this point, so either Rangers went to 7 which reports had them not wanting to do or their is a team that hasn't been mentioned a lot in bidding now
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 11:37 AM) Yep. He didn't earn the $60 million over the life of the deal. He also failed to earn his yearly salary in 3 of the 5 years of the contract, according to fangraphs' value measurements. Now he is 5 years older and he wants a pay raise? I enjoy numbers too and think it's added to my enjoyment of MLB the last handful of years, but I don't think you can just look at the numbers like this and just say it tells the whole .story. The White Sox are a top 10 payroll team, so a deal like PK's last one they can absorb a little more. Also, the LAA were pushing hard for PK, the Sox would have lost him if they didn't give him that deal, so then you have to find the players that would have filled in, they would have had to come for the right $$ and agreed to come here or acquire them in a trade somehow, easier said when they're paper unknown players than when the actual mechanics of getting another player actually have to play out. Also, while it was ridiculously overvalued in the Jeter saga, there is a value for specific players to specific franchises and I believe PK is that to the White Sox... with all that said, I think PK earned his last contract
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 11:34 AM) I'm sure one of them will sell their stake and cash out. yeah, most likely option, but if other half can't raise stake to buy it, then you could add 3rd party, etc... just might freeze LAD for a little
  20. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 11:32 AM) In other news: jamie mccourt wins case and gets half #dodgers. 2 lawyers tell me ruling is right. A mess now, tho - Jon Heyman wow, that can be insanely ugly when trying to run an MLB team
  21. Nats said to be out of Lee now and focusing on other pitching according to Heyman... My guess would be one of the other suitors stepped up with an extra year
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 11:25 AM) And Jeter would have gotten the ARod treatment. Timing is a huge part of making huge money. Someone mentioned earlier that JR wouldn't necessarily spend the money he is prepared to spend on Paulie on others. Normally, I would say this is very true, but because you had a couple of guys defer money, I would imagine they will probably spend it this offseaon if Paulie doesn't come back. that's my feeling about it too, you can't ask Dunn and AJ to defer money for one player, it had to be something like they would go balls to the walls to resign PK but if it didn't work out they would use the money elsewhere.
  23. QUOTE (quickman @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 10:25 AM) I am not sure what this has to do with where Konerko lives. Its a strange argument. Konerko has lived in AZ since high school. I'm just saying that a lot of players families don't live in the town they play, I know PK's doesn't, and it's not like a strange thing that they do it.
  24. QUOTE (quickman @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 10:16 AM) I am very sorry you don't believe that. They do come in the summer months. They do own a house here for the summer. They live in scottsdale as there primary residence. Your choice on what you believe. it's common with a lot of players, every now and then you'll hear the announcers mention that a players family is in town when it's a home game.
  25. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 10:05 AM) Sounds a bit to me like the best offer thus far has come within the division... I would imagine the Twins would have some good young players to make great offer, but also could be KC posturing for other teams.
