I'd take Stoney in a heartbeat. I'm sorry, DJ is a nice guy but he offers nothing as an announcer. His observations are bland and sometimes make no sense at all. His damn "reminders" are also terribly irritating. He's basically Hawk's whipping boy. Stone on the other hand is the definition of a color commentator. He calls situations as he sees it and usually before it happens. I can see Hawk and Stone clashing, but bringing in Stoney would be worth it. I must say though, I definitely don't see it happening. Look for Stoney to get into a more influential role in some ballclub (Washington GM?)

Visquel has always been a solid #2 hitter for the Indians. And he's still a gold glove shortstop. He'd also probably lead our team in stolen bases. He's a smart player; a kind that we seem to have been missing in recent years. I say try to get him on a two year deal. I saw enough of Harris this year, so I'd have no problem making Uribe the every day second baseman. I think Uribe earned a starting spot next year, so we should try to get him in somewhere. Hell, if Crede continues his lack of progress, I'd be fine with Uribe at 3rd.

I actually like Joe Buck, but what do I know? The worst announcer in my book (at least for baseball) is that dude who calls the Seattle Mariner games. He is friggin abnoxious and he apparently doesn't think people can hear him during the broadcasts. I heard a broadcast of his on the Season Ticket plan, and I felt like I was being yelled at for 9 innings. And while I don't think he's the worst, DJ is pretty bad, with his constant reminders. Blah! Tim McCarver is pretty crappy as well. It seems like he just tries to be the center of the action. Even yesterday, he was ragging on Tommy Lasorda for getting in Milton Bradley's face in the dougout before the game. Just call the friggin game for christ sake.

Ah, good points. The injuries are definitely a concern there, and you are right, he's far from the old Nomar which I would put right up there with ARod as far as great shortstops. I guess my feeling is that he's still light years better than our current SS situation. Back to Walker, it's kind of wierd that a guy would come out like that about another players contract situation. I guess it fits to his reputation of being an ass.

This doesn't have a whole lot to do with Todd Walker, but I heard him on WGN 720 yesterday saying that he doesn't like the chances of Nomar staying with the Cubs. I guess my question is why not throw a whole lot of money at him? We need a proven shortstop, we'll have some money lying around with the departure of Maggs and I believe he's worth the money. Now, I understand that he is said to really want to play on the west coast (supposedly the Dodgers and Angels will make a run for him), but why should that stop us from making an attempt?

Although I like Walker, haven't we said this enough about our hitters over the past 4 years? Apparently, this strategy isn't working too well.

I see your point. It's just from what I've seen from Pavano this year, especially in that game against us, he's been lights out and has looked almost unhittable. W-L - 15-5, ERA - 2.99, SO - 109, BB - 45 Although Clement would be a good addition and look great in the 3 or 4 spot, you just never know what you are getting with him. With Maggs probably leaving, we'll have some cash to work with. Why not go with more of a sure thing?
-
I'd be all for the Sox throwing a lot of money at Pavano and maybe only Pavano during the off-season. That guy is a friggin stud and would give us at least the best pitching staff in our division and maybe the best AL staff east of Oakland. Garcia Buehrle Pavano Contreras Garland ???? This is pretty damn good and could carry us a long way. Now, we'd need a semi-overhaul offensively, but I don't think that meens we need to pick up some high priced superstars. I wouldn't mind a guy like Visquel, or a similar player who does the little things (defense, baserunning, good situational hitting) and wouldn't cause us to break the bank. We got the big run producers in Frank, Konerko and Lee. Now we got to surround them with guys who will do other things besides knock the ball out of the park.

Any idea on what the attendance will be like tonight?

Sox in July = Bad. Very f***ing bad.

Kenny also gave up close to nothing to get Colon when he was the top pitcher on the market (unless you saw something in Leifer, Biddle and Osuna that I didn't). Thing is, you usually can give away a lot less for a guy who is a free agent at the end of the year. Hence, the Cubs better hope they can sign Garciaparra at the end of the year, cause they gave up some great talent for a possible rental. If you listened to his interview, he didn't exactly sound thrilled about the deal. Remember, when the Maggs for Nomar trade almost went down, everybody was saying that he'd bolt for the west coast at the end of the season anyway (he apparently lives out there). Anyway, to call us chumps for not being able to rip other teams off is just ignorant. Hendry has traded away players like Dontrelle Willis, Eric Hinske and Hee Shoep Choi. all players I'd gladly take. Hendry's a good GM, but don't make it sound like he's got every team in his pocket. As for the E-Lo for Contreras move, I think it was a good one. I loved watching Esty last year, but from what I've seen this year, he's clearly proving to be a fluke. If he had a couple good years before last year, I may have given him the benefit of the doubt. But fact of the matter is that last year looks like more aberation than revelation. I wish him all the luck in NYC. And obviously, Contreras's stats are nothing to drool over. But he has the stuff and pitched in some big games. He also was moved all over the place for the Yanks the past two years and could probably use some consistancy. I'm not as enthusiastic about this deal as some others, but the fact that he's actually signed for a few years (vs. Esty being a free agent at the end of the year) is enough for me to be mildly happy about it.

There doesn't seem to be any reason not to do the "Shingo Frisbee" outside of the fact that you might have a handful of drunks throwing these things onto the field during the game. The gong idea is clever and all, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to be at a game with 10,000+ people banging gongs all night. In the words of Todd Flanders: "Ow, my freaking ears."
-
I was thinking that a "Shingo Frisbee" would be more economical and appropriate.

If somebody already posted this, please delete this thread. Otherwise, here's kind of a bizarre article from Phil Rogers which asks Cub fans to embrace the Sox. I don't think I want that, but here's the article. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...hitesox-utility

I was just listening to Boers and Bernstein and they were talking about the Cubs meltdown (no this is not another Cubs Suck thread) and Boers asked Bernsy if the freak outs with Hawkins and Zambrano would happen under Ozzie. Bernsy answered with a resounding "no", citing that Ozzie has called out players for not staying with the team while injured, speaking out to the press, etc.; while seemingly having good control over his players. This got me to thinking that with a little more than half the season passed, we have a better idea of what kind of manager Ozzie is. And although we have slipped away from the supposed "Ozzie Ball" (which I don't think we have the right players to play that style anyway), I do think Ozzie has thus far has displayed the qualities of an above average manager. Now, back to Dusty. As far as the national media is concerned, he is amongst the best managers in the league. But after seeing him up close in Chicago the past two years, I feel that Ozzie is at least on par with him. With his poor handling of the pitching staff (any Cub fan would support this statement) and his lack of control over his team as seen recently with the Cubs and previously with the strained Giants clubhouse (Bonds and Kent), I don't think it's a stretch to put Ozzie in the same league as him. I know it might be too early to grasp how good Ozzie is as a manager, and we probably should wait to see how he handles real adversity and the pressures of a pennant race; but from what I've seen, I've been pleased with him thus far. So, knowing what we know, where would you guys put Ozzie amongst the MLB ranks?

Way to hold 'em Damaso.

For some reason I think that Pauly would still be slow as hell if he weighed a buck seventy.

Somehow we managed to turn an inning that we tied the game into a momentum builder for them.

Looks like Carlos has got a little case of "Koch Shirt" tonight.
