Sox should trade Josh Fields
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 07:43 PM) The more I think about it, the more I want the Sox to trade Fields. If you can package Fields for a big time major leaguer that you'll have control over for the next few years, you have to think about it. Even if Crede doesn't return to the Sox next year, there should be a good amount of 3rd baseman available for the Sox to go after. I would do it in a heart-beat. Josh Fields still has a lot of adjustments to make to become a very good major leaguer.

Sox Option Russell, Call Up Clayton Richard
QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 04:43 PM) I've listened to a few of his starts via mlb audio. His fastball was in the 92-93 range. He threw off speed pitches that dropped down to around 77-78. Don't remember much about his repertoire, but do remember he threw an effective curve in the games I heard. I wouldn't consider 92-93 his consistent velocity. He tops out around there but pitches more in the 87-90 MPH range. Relies on changing speeds, locations, and good command. Has good sinking action on most everything he throws. Not the type of guy that will impress you over a one game span, rather the type of guy that starts to impress the more you see him throw.

Sox interested in Street
I can't imagine the cost. I love Huston Street though.

So did anything happen with this? I didn't see anything on sportscenter late last night?

2008 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 02:27 AM) Gavin is starting to remind me of Javy "I can't go more than 5-6 innings/Always expect the big inning from me" Vazquez, anyone else see this alarming trend lately? Gavin gave up 1ER in 6 innings with a lot of k's. He goes 7 if it weren't for Crede being horrid over at 3B. I don't see the comparison at all. Gavin threw a good game last night. Ozzie's managing of the pen and the execution of the pen a whole other story.

Contreras Placed on the DL
I hope that there is an actual reason for his loss and this isn't just them calling it a tired arm or something. Maybe some sort of minor back issue or something along those lines? I guess elbow tenditis could be what has effected him or it could be a BS injury. With Carrasco coming up, who will making the starts or does the schedule line up to work out that they really don't need a fifth for the first turn or two in the 2nd half of the season? I certainly hope Carrasco isn't going to start and Masset isn't stretched out enough to start. In fact, with Floyd/Danks I think they should be interested in getting those guys rest so I see no reason anyone but Egbert/Broadway/Haeger isn't up (Richard would have been a suggestion but he's on the olympic squad and I doubt the Sox will pull him away from that, plus I don't even know how that would work).

Iowa A.D. Under Fire
Not quite as concerned with the drunk football player. There was the theft stuff that happened with what seemed to be half of there WR corps last year but for the most part the Iowa football players issues have been what I would deem "minor". This potential rape thing is a whole other story though. Either way all I read this off-season was how Iowa was moving forward and putting more issues on character and they were going to do what they could to ensure it. Who knows if they have or haven't but I hope they aren't just saying things, rather DO IT.

Iowa A.D. Under Fire
All I'm going to say is if true, anyone involved in the scandal should be fired, imo (well by that I mean anyone who tried to cover up something like rape). Absolutely dispicable. They didn't learn from the Steve Alford/Pierre Pierce s***.

Signings from the 2008 Draft
Awesome. Long would sign, but only for first round money and while he had arguably first round potential, he wasn't near as clear cut as the guys who went 1st round (I'd have been willing to go anywhere from 2nd to 5th round money with Long and I think 2nd round money may have been pushing it, imo). The Sox put in a good effort but bottom line, there is no reason they should have offered 1st round money. Great stuff on Danks.

Soxtalk Softball Part II
We had a full roster, WSI had a short roster so Mario and I played on the other roster to even things out (and when I say WSI had a short roster, I mean there were 3 WSI team players there (initially 5 or 6, but when it started pouring just before first pitch a couple of them left). So I don't think you can really pick a winner, but I think everyone had a blast playing in the pouring rain (horrid field conditions).

The Dark Knight
That movie was absolutely amazing. Easily the best movie I've seen this year and one of the best I've ever seen. Ledger was brilliant as the joker, Bale was his usually stellar self and the movie kept me on the edge of the seat for the full 2hr's and 40 minutes and didn't feel like I was there for 2hr's and 40 minutes. The only bad part of the movie was me squeeming in my seat trying to hold in my pee for the last hour or so of the movie.

Trade Winds Catch All
You could make a case that the Sox could have dealt some of those guys for top notch players (Honel early on, Borchard, Anderson). Can't say the same about McCulloch/Broadway. McCulloch was by far the worse of that group of picks. Well I guess I could make a case for Royce Ring given the fact that Blanton was on the boards (and was someone everyone wanted). Lumsden busted but more due to injuries than lack of stuff and had very good potential and the Royals thought highly enough in him to trade for MacDougall (who at the time was pitching lights out). Whisler was a terrible selection though.

Bobby Jenks Assignment
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 18, 2008 -> 11:17 AM) If Loaiza only hit 78 on his fastball that isn't good, but the question is if this is rehab maybe he wasn't supposed to go for velocity. But, I am not convinced anymore he will be the 6th starter, if needed. Considering the one thing he needed to work on more than anything was velocity, I'd be surprsied if he wasn't pitching for velocity. Bottom line he won't be back on the Sox roster anytime soon and his career is probably over.

Sox prospect selected for US Olympic Team
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 18, 2008 -> 10:10 PM) the other thing with Getz is that it just seems as though he's an Aaron Miles clone...not that there's anything wrong with Aaron Miles, it's just that he's better suited to be a backup player than a starter at 2B next year. Richar has the potential to atleast be about a league average 2Bman. I don't think you can compare the two. Getz can actually play SS and 3B (not the greatest arm, but it is strong enough to backup at both of those spots) plus he can play the OF. He is also a lot faster and has more pop (not a lot more) but bottom line he has a better skill-set than that of Aaron Miles.

Bears sign RB Kevin Jones
QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) Llyod May not even make the roster. I expect the least out of him. Bradley has never had a real opportunity to perform since his injury. Bennet may have the talent of a # 1 eventually, but this should not be the year to find out. It's really Bradley or Bust. As scary as that is, it is not any worse than relying on a unproven Berrian at the start of 2006. Olsen/Clark/Hester/Jones need to step up on O obviously. Hester is the guy I think most likely to emerge as a #1 but he is incredibly raw and will be a first time starter. The reality is Berrian getting franchised would have been perfect because the Bears could have had Bennett adjust in, Hester as a 2 or 3 (and slowly adjust) and give Bradley and opportunity to prove themselves. That way at the end of the year the Bears would lose BB but also know what they have in Bennet/Bradley/Hester and whether that would be an adequate corps or if they would need to go out and target a WR via FA/Trade/1st Round Selection. I should point out that this isn't me saying this after the fact. I continually said that the Bears should have franchised Berrian regardless of whether they felt they would be able to come to terms with on an extension or not.

Bears sign RB Kevin Jones
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) He's not really had a legit opportunity to do so either. Each time it appears he is going to start the season with significant playing time something happens - he was well on his way to being established before tearing his ACL, then the next year he was having a good camp and had a muscle pull (or something, I forget) which set him back and ended up burying him on the depth chart while the Bears went to the Super Bowl. Then the following year he was just kind of there, and he was stuck behind Berrian on the depth chart again, this time with Hester in the equation. However, as much of a Bradley apologist as I am, I will say this - he is not too bright, and has had trouble learning which routes to run. If he was able to do that they may have let him play more that year. Listen, I like Bradley as much as the next guy but you can't possibly ignore those injuries. When it happens that many times its a trend. He also failed to even be able to make it out on the field for most of the season even when he was healthy (Grossman had to plead to get him out there) and there had to be some sort of reason for that.

Carrasco optioned to Charlotte
This is an indication of just how much the Sox think of Adam Russel. I really believe the Sox feel this guy will be one of there primary set-up men two years from now.

Bears sign RB Kevin Jones
QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) Not Franchising Berrian Hurts, not matching the Vikes offer doesn't hurt at all. Booker better not be the # 1. I expect him to replace Moose and that's about it. That's what he is fully capable of. Hoping any of Bradley,Bennet or Llyod emerge as a # 1 is a crapshoot. But, it would not be a bigger surprise than when Berrian emerged out of no where a few years back. Having 2 good TE's makes this unproven WR corps a little easier to swallow. Brandon Lloyd has struggled to do anything the past couple of seasons. Therefor, relying on him to be a #1 WR would be like the Bears expecting Orton to put up Peyton Manning or Tom Brady like numbers (in fact, even worse, it would be like expecting Hunter Hillmeyer to be Brian Urlacher). Mark Bradley has had 3 years in this league and has yet to prove himself as a reliable #3, let alone a #1. Bennet is a 3rd round draft pick who has yet to prove anything in the NFL The fact that the Bears have to count on any of these guys to be a #1 is absolutely freaking ridiculous.

Bears sign RB Kevin Jones
QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) The QB situation I am fine with. I don't think anyone in the draft is going to be playoff QB right now. I would rather go with Rex than what was out there. The Wr situation was a bit tough. No way Berrian was worth what the Vikings gave him, so I am not sad to see him go at that price. I am very pleased with Booker taking over for Muhaumed. It basically comes down to Bradley/Lloyd/Bennett taking over for Berrian. Everyone seems to forget that Berrian would have never had an opportunity to begin with if Bradley never got hurt. If Bradley stays healthy, I am pretty confident that he will do a decent job replacing Berrian. Lloyd and Bennett are Dark horses out of all of this. Who knows what will become of Devin Hester with the WR corps. Also, look for the Bears to run many 2 TE sets. I was most concerned with runing back and Guard. With Kevin Jones abroad, my biggest concern is gone. So as a Bear fan ,with a Healthy D and 2 New RBs I am pretty excited about the new season. Anything short of the playoffs would be very disappointing. Angelo made a huge mistake when he didn't franchise Berrian. He could have signed the one year tender and the Bears would have had a year to be able to better develop and evaluate the WR's on roster. Instead the Bears are left with s*** in the WR cupboard (at least in terms of anyone who has proven anything in the NFL and yes, Booker is s*** if you are expecting him to be a #1 WR; As a 3rd stringer, he's freaking tremendous).

Bobby Jenks Assignment
QUOTE (letsgoarow @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 04:43 PM) Well Bobby was filthy. He struck out the side on 12 pitches. Fastball at 96/97, curve was around 89/90. No one had a chance. I would say he is ready to go!! I also sat next to an Indians scout, he was impressed lol. He showed me his gun thats how i got the speeds. Awesome stuff, thanks for all that info.

Bears sign RB Kevin Jones
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) Yeah that drives me nuts. Obviously Angelo had no intentions of signing a OG, I don't know why because there were plenty of FAs available he could've had for a modest price, it's not like he had to sign Faneca or anything. Metcalf is absolutely horrible, and that position is a gaping hole unless Beekman turns out to be some kind of ace. Ruben Brown and LeCharles Bentley are still out there. Brown has also had nothing but positive things to say about the org so I still think at the end of the day the Bears will bring Brown in.
