  1. http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/artic...reer-leadership I assume you don't need a degree, but I could be wrong. I have a friend who works for UPS and It is about as good of a career as possible for you to go in without having that college degree (benefits, solid pay, etc). Wanted to put that out there since I know there is a good chunk of youth here. And if someone is in college, I'm not telling you to drop out and do this. But I also don't think you necessarily need to go to college. I think the importnat part is that after high school you either go to college and do what you want there or learn a trade and continue to develop and hone a workable craft.
  2. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 6, 2010 -> 06:50 PM) It's called a deferred liability, first of all. Second of all, they'll pay. Don't worry. And it's not some trick. Third of all, you can thank your Congress for this (without regard to party - but I'm sure it's some evil GOP plot against government and paying off the private sector, because it always is.) Ditto what you say!
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 08:33 AM) Getting nothing done against their mediocre bullpen was very disconcerting. Letting Teahen face Laffey was disconcerting with a running on 1st in a 1 run game. I was screaming at my TV to make a move to Jones (if you wanted to swing away) or to simply put in Omar Vizquel to bunt and move AJ over. Teahen went on to get ahead in the count, 2-0, and than hit into a double play. Ozzie really disspaointed me becuase this wasn't the only time that I was yelling at my TV for Ozzie to do something, but he didn't. It is early in the seaosn, now is the time to be overly agressive to set the tone to your entire club and Ozzie wasn't. It is probably the only thing that really bugged me about last night's game (outside of the fact that we blew a 3-0 lead with Peavy on the mound...which should amost never happen). I also was bummed that our pen blew a game that was tied (that happened so f***ing much last year).
  4. No, I don't think Ozzie is going to flat platoon Jones and only play him against righties. I think if Jones hits well, he'll be the primary starter who will only sit against tough righties (with Kotsay replacing him). If Jones doesn't hit well, than you'll probably see Kenny make a move for a more permanent fixture.
  5. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 08:20 AM) I'm not saying AJ has a rocket for an arm, but many of the pitchers give him zero chance Floyd and Garcia will get ran on and it isn't on AJ. But Peavy, Danks, and Buehrle should all do enough to make it at least difficult. And once Hudson replaces Garcia we'd only have Floyd who is a tad bit slow to the mound. Of course Jenks is completely useless at slowing down the oppositions ground game.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 08:14 AM) There is already an upper echelon defensive catcher on the team - problem is, he can't hit. I assume you are referring to Castro? He seems solid but I don't know if he calls a great game and is a true complete catcher. And you are right, he can't hit. Or are you talking about your boy Lucy?
  7. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 08:15 AM) I think that's more so he was that desperate to get out of Carolina. He really wanted to play OLB in a 3-4 system for a while, but he won't obviously get that opportunity in Chicago. This actually happened when he was still in a 4-3 set-up and happy in Carolina. And Peppers 2 sack season (2007) also happened in a 4-3 defense, not with the 3-4. I believe it was lsat season when they made the switch to the 3-4, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
  8. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 08:18 AM) And you're on the "horrible" Vista. You should really upgrade to 7 as it hogs way fewer resources. I got to take the iPad home last night. The thing that will make it endlessly entertaining is the same reason people like their iPhones or the iPod Touch... the Aps. Each contains 5 or more minutes of entertainment. I did notice the iPad froze a lot, I assume with any new device this will be fixed in future software downloads. Hell, my Palm Pre only recently stopped having any issues and that was after it got the software update to the Palm Pre Plus. I hope you are ready for Palm to go bankrupt, because it is inevitable. They really have been putting out a poor product for a while and with the Android buzz they are going to need some sort of revolutionary new product (or to get acquired) to save them. I'll never bet against Google. I'm also not going to be against Apple either. I might not support it, but they've marketed the hell out of themeslves and have become the cool thing to do. There margins have to be pretty fat too, but I don't know what sort of fixed costs they have and how much they spend marketing, etc vs a PC. Cause I'd have to think the actual cost to building a mac vs a pc aren't too different, even though the prices are significantly different.

Hell, my Palm Pre only recently stopped having any issues and that was after it got the software update to the Palm Pre Plus. I'm actually on Windows 7 at home, which I love. But I had Vista at my job 2 companies ago and used it every day with no issues. My last company I worked at and the current company I work at now are both still on XP and that op system was really rock solid, imo. 7 is super nice though too. Works great at home. Does everything I could ask of it.
  10. My boy Floyd out there to pitch in the rubber game!!! And this might be a crazy thought, but if I were the Sox, I'd look hard into finding an upper echelon defensive catcher who could START. When you build a team around pitching, it also means you need to have a strong defense and our run-game defense is the worse in baseball (well outside of Boston). That would be a little more acceptable if we had a team that planned on scoring a s***-ton of runs, but when you built your team to win 3-2 games, you can't afford to be handing over 2nd to anyone that gets on 1st.
  11. I've used Macs for work from time to time. I'd be lying if I said I was a mac expert. I consider myself to be well above average on a PC. I'm not quite a computer programmer, but I'm smart enough and technologically illiterate to get things accomplished and that might be why I haven't had significant issues with a PC (because I don't think of stuff as work-arounds, I just know how to get it accomplished). However, when I've used macs I've just never gotten comfortable and that might go back to the fact that I've never had to work on a mac for a month period in a row. Usually if I did, it was for a couple days and away from the mac I went (happily too because I feel completely lost and uncomfortable on them). So again, I might not be the best person to talk to since I haven't used both religiously at any point in time. Well, except when I was a kid. I used to only use a Mac computer for the first few years and than when I switched to PC I was so much happier. But that was so long ago that it doens't really count.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 07:32 AM) Well, to be fair, I said it made peoples' computing experience a disaster, not their lives a computing disaster...) Secondly, so because it managed to work and be functional, it was not a complete disaster of a product? Is that the standard that you have come to accept from Microsoft? Is that a reflection on what they have done to PC users that those users are willing to accept something that merely manages to "work" and be "functional"? My PC has done everything I've needed it to do and hasn't stopped me from doing anything I couldn't. There has never been a time where I looked at my computer and said, s***, if only I had a mac I could do this or if only I had a mac I wouldn't have this issue. Never has that ever happened to me. So since that is the case, I can't really justify paying double for a machine that for all intents and purposes to me, will do nothing better for me. And I'm not referring to an Ipad, I'm referring to a Mac compared with a PC.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 02:38 PM) So because the OS is no longer sold means it isn't still running on millions of machines? Sorry, but Microsoft has not earned my trust yet. I will not buy a windows machine simply because this latest OS hasn't made everyone's computing experience a complete disaster yet. And to be honest with you, the money really isn't that huge of a deal to me. The device does exactly what I need and want it to do, is of a more aesthetically pleasing and intuitive design for me to use. I know in advance it will be well-made, it will continue to be improved, it will not be obsolete in a year because it has a company standing behind it that will support it. Therefore, to me, the pricetag is acceptable. Maybe I'm ignorant, but why did Vista make everyones lives a computing disaster. I agree that I wasn't a huge fan of the OS system, but it still worked, was functional, and I've never ran into any significant issues while operating with it. It was a resources hog though.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 07:05 AM) I think Scott Skiles gets an unfair rep for not being a people person. I think his problem is that he tries to hold NBA players accountable for their mistakes, and tries to get his teams to actually play as a team. This rubs NBA players the wrong way because it is a me-first league and the inmates run the asylum, not because he is wrong. Skiles is a tremendous coach. His schtcik just doesn't last more than a couple seasons cause the primadonna players now a days will tune him out. His style would have worked so well a generation ago. I still think Skiles could be a tremendous college coach. He could coach up his players and from a recruiting standpoint if I were a parent I'd love to know that skiles would be molding my kid into an adult. Skiles doesn't seem like the type of guy that is afraid to teach his players lessons and help them grow as players and people.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 07:03 AM) Are you talking about when he played for the franchise tag? I got the impression he was really working to try to get to FA for that big score he just got. Edit: BTW, I should point out I still think signing peppers was 100% the right move for the Bears. I just brought him up there because the description may apply. During the time of the franchise tag and prior to that he had big money offers. One of those offers came after his one season where he put up very poor sack numbers and I had read where he didn't feel he had earned a big multi-year contract. Now I'm sure some of that was spin by Peppers agent, but the guy turned down HUGE HUGE money in the past which has to tell you flat out that it wasn't entirely about the money (it still is 99% about the money and it is for pretty much every profesisonal athlete).
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 06:06 AM) Sentence 1...what does that say about one Julius Peppers? Sentence 2...I wouldn't be surprised if it happened, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he was back to being a disaster there too. I also wouldn't be surprised if some other team stepped in. The thing is, Peppers is well liked by his teammates and coaches. His reputation to take plays off only comes from the fact that he isn't always as dominant as people think he should be because of the ridiciulous athletism he possesses. His teammates and coaches seem to think it has more to do with the fact that he's consistently double-teamed. Yet he still puts up very good numbers. Now I happen to think Peppers probably does slack off from time to time, this isn't a guy that was just waiting for a pay check. He turned down big money multi year deals in the past and went with short term deals. He doesn't have attitude issues and is a hard worker.
  17. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 08:50 PM) Wait, what am I missing about Byron Scott? Apparently I'm very misinformed. He has a reputation for not being a very good X's and O's coach who has ridden the coat tails of some very good assistant coaches (see Eddie Jordan). And his people skills are absolutely awful. He's basically Scott Skiles, without the actually coaching ability. Hornets players would talk about how Scott would just not talk to you for weeks or even months at a time. The guy is a complete, grade a, douche. I don't mean to be this harsh, but ya, he's that bad.
  18. f*** u all, I own the site and am republican...I'm closing this place down. Screw freedom of speach....go burn your flags elsewhere Seriously, I don't come in here too much and I rarely get into the politics of anything anymore, but there will always be a back and forth when it comes to two people with complete opposite view points on politics and sometimes names will get called, people will kick and scream and that is why we have the awesome mods we have that run this forum. The reality is, it will happen, but the fact that by and large during this forums tenure we've been able to have provactive and intelligent discusison regarding politics is just flat out impressive and people shouldn't forget that!! Clearly as we approach November this forum is going to turn up in volume, people will be more fired up, and we will probably see lines drawn in the sand, but we ask that everyone looks pasts the posters and sticks with the issues at hand.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 05:38 AM) They pulled Wise from the leadoff spot after a couple of days and some resounding boos though. You can't compare Kotsay and Wise. Kotsay is a much more valuable player. He still shouldn't be batting 5th, but that is a whole other debate. Kotsay is a legitimate major league bench player when healthy at this point in the career (he is even a solid platoon option as a starter when healthy). The guy knows how to play the game, can handle a bat, uses all fields. He's a very solid role player.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) The Astros problem has seemed pretty obvious to me, it's all about ownership. Their front office/owner feels like they have a team that can win now and is only a player or two away, and insists on spending and trading according to that plan. And Ed Wade did a horrendous job too.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 01:48 PM) Actually, I'd guess it's the lack of things like luxury boxes and the limited number of seats (especially at Fenway) that pushes ticket prices up there. I'd take it one step farther. It is a supply/demand curve and quite frankly there is and always will be high high demand for the Cubs & Red Sox and because of it they can charge what they want and always raise prices. It is why I have never understood why the Sox charge as much for ticket prices as they do. They are a very expensive team to go see and I really would like to see what would happen to attendance and overall revenue if the team actually dropped ticket prices by a decent chunk (again, I have no idea whether it would have much of an impact or not). All I know is that the Angels are a pretty good value, even though they've been raising ticket prices for a while.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) I wonder whether the government would actually be willing to enforce that as well. Does the government not also gain some benefit by having Korean players earn fame playing in the world's best baseball league, even if it is overseas? And anyway...if they offered a single deferment for a guy playing in MLB...it's not like there's a lot of MLB players in the world where they'd have to worry about this becoming a major way to get out of military service. As of now everything I've read on the subject indicated that the government said they would enforce the policy unless they won the gold in the WBC. That probably won't happen, but I think Choo would have a good point about how his success would promote Korea far more than him leaving the majors and serving in the military. That said if the Korea government handed out exceptions to a major leaguer, than if I were an actor I'd make the same case and all of a sudden they'd have all kinds of people asking for exceptions to the rule.
  23. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 01:48 PM) Remember when the Astros were one of the most stacked/exciting teams in baseball to watch during the late 90's, early 2000's? The product they've put on the field for the last three years or so is embarrassing. I was actually at yesterday's Astros game and was talking to the guy who gave me the ticket (season ticket holder) and I was chatting with him about how far they've fallen. He barely recognized the players and I was talking with him about the sad fact that most of the kids that they have up aren't even good prospects. They really are a pathetic team. I also looked at the Giants lineup and between the two teams I was going, holy hell, the Sox have one ridiculous lineup when compared to some of the s*** offenses in the AL. You could replace me with Quentin and the Sox lineup would still be 100 times better than the crap the Astros/Giants are running out there right now. In Houston's defense, there big 3 is formidable once Berkman comes back (Lee/Berkman/Pence).
  24. I believe there has also been some rumors that Choo might just not ever go back to Korea (and who could blame him). While I think it is a sticking point that would prevent him from entering a contract and I'm sure it is something that will weigh on his mind, he does have options and I would surprised to see him actually serve in the military.
  25. QUOTE (zenryan @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 12:48 PM) Big win at UCLA last night. I'm so pissed at myself because my sportsbook offers select college lines at CSF was +240 last night. I wanted to pull the trigger since UCLA just had their unbeaten streak snapped and thought this game was a huge game for CSF. Two good teams plus midweek starters make it a coin flip. Wish I had bigger nuts haha. I'm hoping they have gotten there "mojo" back. Every time they lost, I think it just piled onto there backs since they had such high expectations. Now I'm thinking they are playing loose and easy baseball now that they opened conference play (albeit, UCLA was an Out of Conference opponent). Hopefully they have a strong weekend series at top 25 UCI (top 15 up until a week ago). 12-4 in their last 16 games; 13-5 in their last 18 games; 9-2 in their last 11 games. I'm going to try and hit up at least one of those games.
