Latest Starter Linked to Sox in a Roundabout Way: Roy Oswalt
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ May 28, 2009 -> 09:42 PM) If the Sox are willing to add a big, long term deal RIGHT NOW, I think it's a solid plan. As we have seen under this regime, the Sox going out into FA and landing a big name doesn't happen. With the alarmingly low success rate big FA deals seem to have, it doesn't seem like a terrible strategy. If the Sox are comfortable with a pitcher, Oswalt for example, and have the money to take on the contract, having him the big four locked up into 2012 will be a nice foundation for this organization to have for the foreseeable future. Plus look at it this way, by trading for the guy you don't have to let other teams drive up the financial market price. In addition, you shouldn't have a ton of competitors given the economy and most importantly whether you trade or not, you are giving up a form of draft pick compensation by signing any stud pitcher and are probably going to have to go more years than trading a guy already under an existing contract. It makes sense and I'm excited to see what the club does.

2009 MLB Pre-Draft Discussion
Belt is one of those guys that was a potential 1st round pick out of high school and he's a guy that has seen his stock drop the most between high school and college. His fastball velocity dropped and he moved to the offensive side fulltime and looks like a real nice looking offensive project. Seems like he could be a nice value pick in the 5th-12th rounds.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 28, 2009 -> 09:12 PM) I watch a lot of baseball and follow it closely, but Houston hasn't been on my radar this year, who else would they have that the Sox might be interested in? Any back of the rotation/innings eater starter in case Count and Colon can't answer the bell? what's their 3rd base situation in case they don't want to rush Slayer? Could be Oswalt, would fit KWs style, but wondering what else is there. I agree with you though, KW with a good farm system and money coming off the books will mean a ton of rumors The problem with KW striking soon is, as long as they believe Oswalt is healthy, why rush to trade him now? Can you imagine the haul they could get from him at the deadline? The haul might not be that big. My guess is that there are very few teams out there willing to take on long-term contracts at the deadline while also giving up a ton of prospects. At least I'm hoping thats the case cause if it is and the Sox really are willing to take on one big contract, than we as fans might be in luck.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 28, 2009 -> 09:11 PM) They just took Jason Castro last year in the first round, so if Flowers was included I'd like to expand the deal to get Castro back. He'd probably be a fit since it was rumored nearing draft day last year that the Sox had scouted him pretty heavily. But anyway, I don't think they'd be after Flowers as they obviously love Castro considering who they passed on to take him. My only criteria in an Oswalt deal is no Beckham, no Allen, and preferably no Danks since I think he's a key in extending Jon. I only mentioned FLowers name because he's the next in the group of prospects and I wanted to point out that he would fully be available. I'd also trade Brandon Allen if thats what it took. I like Allen more than most, but he's expendable as I just dont' put a premium value on 1st base prospets (although Viciedo might very well be that). That said, I'm fine if we don't make a deal either, but I do want the Sox to add an impact arm. There's guys I'd prefer over Oswalt, especially since Oswalt won't be in his prime as long as some of the other guys.

Oswalt still has good stuff. If you could get him for a package built around Poreda, one of Hudson/Carter, Josh Fields, and anyone not named Danks/Beckham/Viciedo. The question is, would that be enough? I don't know. And yes that means I'd be willing to part with Tyler Flowers in that package.

When Will the Slayer Era Begin?
QUOTE (tommy @ May 28, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) I think Slayers debut depends solely on Josh Fields' performance, with that said I voted before ASB. Even if Gordon gets called up this year and plays the reminder of the season and postseason at 3B I agree with Heads that Gordon will be playing 2B in 2010 with Tank or FA being our 3B. Slayers debut depends on how Pods does at the top of the order. If Pods does well than theoretically Slayer could actually come up at two different spots, 2B or 3B (If Pods falls off, than Getz might have to stay because he's one of the few guys that might be capable of leading off). I say that because Getz, as much as I like him, isn't excatly lighting the world on fire so if Fields hits, the Sox will still bring Beck's up shortly it just might be in Getz place. And if they both hit, well its a good problem to have but Beckham is king to both of them.

Chris Young
I would take Flowers, Gilmore, and Rodriguez (I won't even mention Lilly) over Chris Young/Javy Vazquez. However, I still like Young because he can play stellar defense and hit for power. However, he won't hit for a high average so his value is in the sense that he plays a premium defensive position with power. I also think a change of scenery might help him, although I clearly was a bit off in him. That said, I was touting him up before he ever was a prospect so that should be worth something because he clearly turned into a top 20 prospect in all of baseball at one point in time. Oh and I was also fine with the Javy trade although I always said I'd have preferred to move Brian Anderson (but the Dbacks preferred Young).

Official 2008-2009 NBA Thread
Lebron will stay in Cleveland. People can blab about large market all you want, but Lebron is the face of the NBA already and moving to a large market won't really have that huge of an impact, imo. At least not for Lebron, for the NBA sure. Plus, Cleveland is going to get a Chinese minority owner and they will market him a s***load over in China which WILL be a big boom for Lebron.

2009 MLB Pre-Draft Discussion
QUOTE (OilCan @ May 28, 2009 -> 09:42 AM) Guys, and gals... I've said this player before as a possible guy the Sox could use... 1B Brandon Belt - Texas Currently leading the team with a .342 BA, 8 HRs and 37 RBIs. He was a good LHP coming out of high school but made the switch to the infield when his velocity dipped. Very sweet swing from the left side, closed stance. Here's a writeup about him from today's Austin American-Statesman: http://www.statesman.com/sports/content/sp...528texbase.html If someone will allow I can write a draft profile on him, I would be happy to do so and any other Longhorn player... That would be awesome oilcan. Go for it

Draft Profile - Rex Brothers, LHP
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:38 PM) I’m really starting to get on this kid’s bandwagon. His arm is just outstanding, and power lefties are hard to come by. If KW continues to show Poreda, Brothers is a perfectly logical replacement. It's looking very unlikely that Brothers will be there when the Sox pick. He's pretty much cemented himself into the top 20.
