  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 07:09 AM) I'm surprised they haven't given Norris Hopper a chance yet. The Wise/BA combo is embarrassing. I'm surprised that one of us soxtalkers isn't out there starting.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 04:09 PM) Sez the guy from Marion... Yea, but I moved.
  3. Woohoo! It's cold as hell here today, it's 95 out right now!
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) Sonix, email me. I was born, raised, and still live in Michigan City. I can find whatever you guys want to do here. I'm sorry.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) I had an incredible history prof in college who taught some of the most interesting classes. He was actually versed in Russian, and taught classes on that and SE Asia. The guy knew his stuff so well he edited college textbooks. It was one of the most incredible courses I ever took. What always amazed me about that same prof, is he could tell the history by story telling, make it totally relevant, and never had one single note - he lectured entirely from his memory and never missed a point. Since he lived in these countries for extended periods of time, it was like getting the history from their viewpoint. That's always awesome.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 11:21 AM) Based on the data that's out there, they've been doing a terrible, terrible job of it over the last 30 years. 1% of Americans are earning a higher share of income than they have at any point since the depression. By every metric out there, inequality has skyrocketed over the past 30 years as the conservative movement has been ascendant. Exactly - damn those conservatives and by association, Republicans, letting people actually get "rich".
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 11:32 AM) So, in other words, its nothing but vapor. Why was the M2M the cause of all this again? Because banks couldn't make up arbitrary values for their holdings? I never did post my award winning post about this. Something about getting fired from my job and getting all wrapped up in that. The "banks" argued that FASB (the accounting standards board for US) was forcing them to write down assets to an arbitrarily low value. That's the short answer. So now that the value can be set to "market value (whatever that means, hence the problem)" again, they are seeing "gains" from their balance sheets. That's a waaaaay simplistic answer, there's obviously much more to it.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 11:00 AM) Taxes should be used to reduce income inequality. That's laughable, seeing as that's exactly what's being done.
  9. A lot of these so-called profits this go round on the banks is due to the relaxation of mark to market accounting rules. I knew the banks would show a pretty healthy profit, if not for this reason alone.
  10. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 09:43 AM) Unrelated to actual thread topic. You think of the pace of a summer class is grueling--try prepping and teaching it. On par with waterboarding. Because it's so short?
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 11:58 AM) The worst thing about it is, the obvious motivation for doing it is that these politcal operatives obviously think that a large swath of the US population is so dumb, that they will take such things at face value. And I think they might be right. They are (that dumb)... that's why we have who we have in the White House today.
  12. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 10:00 AM) NPR's Nina Totenberg, on Monday's Charlie Rose, told the PBS host that Supreme Court nominee Sonya Sotomayor actually has "a pretty conservative record." Totenberg claimed Sotomayor's record is "very much in the mainstream," and that "you could say that she's more conservative than some members of the Supreme Court, including Justice Scalia, perhaps." Hey Nina, "Let me have some of what you're smoking." More conservative than Scalia? Come on. They have to spin it that way - which says plain and simple that they have to make her something she's not - and furthermore says that her biased and liberal views of the constitution and the way she judges isn't in the mainstream, if all she has to do is come across as "conservative". Kind of bass ackwards if you ask me and funny that she has to do this to get nominated. (holy run-on, batman).
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) LINK The problem is, they want to discuss her every "blunder" ad naseum. That has nothing to do with "having a thick skin". If people would STFU about everything Sarah Palin, she'd just simply go away, but it seems no one on either side wants to do that, so the drip gas gets added to every damn word that's uttered, and BOOM, it just keeps going and going. It's nauseating, on both sides.
  14. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) Edited. Purga-limbo? That's a new one to me.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) I think we all tend to be pretty rational and agreeable people here, but I think hard-line fundamentalist religious beliefs are more dominant. There's a lot of people out there who know that they have the right answers and know that you're wrong. And they can go to hell.
  16. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:51 PM) Fail. It's now "pass" but most won't understand that.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) I am fairly confident that no one, myself included, is "right" on the topic. Exactly. There's not a person on earth who knows EXACTLY what happens when we die. And for any religion or preacher or (insert religion here) follower to tell you that they know better then another are completely full of poopy (or the flip side of the coin for someone to say "nothing happens because there's no afterlife). No one KNOWS anything. I just hope me, you, and everyone on earth isn't "wrong" for what they believe. I just know that we all should be the best we can, and we all screw that up time and time again, every day. Grace to one another is harder then grace from God, if you believe in that sort of thing (in my opinion). Sorry to derail this - I just thought it was an interesting offshoot.
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:18 PM) You just said, I don't condemn you, then said, you are condemned. To be more clear, it's not my place for the "condemnation". I hope that people are not on the wrong side of that belief, is all I meant. I'm not trying to personally condemn them. Does that make better sense?
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) Yeah, there are few if any more complex issues we all face than religion and faith. Hard to call anyone a moron because of their beliefs or lack thereof. After all, we're all just a clusterf*** of cells running around that evolved from a cesspool of rocks. Ameobas I'm sure came from rocks. Or something. Besides that, we sure do have a lot of free will from evolving from amoebas, don't we? Proving or disproving the exisitance of God is something that can't be done from a scientific viewpoint, so I wish people would stop trying to view it from that prism. You either have faith that there's a God or you don't. It's your choice. I don't condemn people for thinking one way or the other, but just hope you're not on the wrong side of it the day you die.
  20. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:12 AM) I should have known you would be better versed on the male sex symbols, you are such a dick magnet! The only reason I knew was the title, and SHIPPS.
  21. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) That isn't everyone's favorite lifeguard David Hasselhoff? Nah, that's Stoney Pony.
  22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) I love Mark!!! You love Steve, too.
  23. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:02 AM) This has nothing to do with what I think of Obama as a politician, but I hate when I see grown men throw like girls. You just insulted 90% of the soxtalk softball players. And I'm pretty damn sure I'd throw like a girl in that setting, throwing off a mound at an all star game with 80,000 flashbulbs popping? I'd probably piss myself and then throw like a girl anyway.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 10:14 PM) And they're clearly not covering how those dastardly rascals have invaded the Congressional Budget office and in the few weeks since the estimate the Republicans loved turned it in to some cesspool where no one can do math. Really, this has gone beyond silly. "We haven't seen the bill, but we know the CBO can't do math unless it puts out numbers we really like!" There's no way in hell they know what it's going to cost. They will "misinterpret" the data and blame it on Bush, I'm sure.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 10:10 PM) Clearly, the Obama administration set the schedule for: 1. Souter's resignation 2. The end of this year's Supreme Court term 3. The beginning of next year's Supreme Court term 4. The fall recess for the House and Senate. These guys have some ridiculous power. Next thing you know they'll be using their mental gymnastics to start having their opposition do crazy, insane, ludicrous things, like pay huge sums of money to mistresses or just flat out resign. Yes, we know. Republicans are all things evil to the United Social States of Amerikkka. By the way, BearSox, you're wrong. They're covering health care, just not the part of how much it's REALLY going to cost.
