I have a new client installed - don't like it near as much as mIRC, but it will work... it functions much the same way, except it doesn't have sound. Boo. I will have a couple of people help me test it out in the next day and then launch it.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 07:51 PM) Do we still have chat? We will have something back up tomorrow.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 06:18 PM) Ok, so if the government non-profit option will run all for-profit health plans out of business, why don't these non-profit ones do it already? Non-profit in this case means that they spend all the money they take in. Which depending on the situation might not be bad.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 04:06 PM) So really, its teen births that make it so high (at least compared to Canada)? Seems weird, as I'd think some other countries would have far more teen births. Most countries do not count any baby under 6 lbs. as an "infant death". That's another part of it. There's also some birth deaths that go unreported because they use a lot of midwifes as well - most don't want to go to the hospital for births.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:52 AM) Why is the infant mortality rate so high in the US? Link There's your answer.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) BUT THINK OF HOW MANY CENTIMETERS THAT WOULD BE!!! That was the "oh wait" part.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:54 PM) Point 1...the government clearly needs to restore its insurance reserve coffers anyway. It just bailed out the largest insurer in the world. Point 2...who is William Buffet? William Buffet is a rich motherf'er who stole all of Warren Buffet's riches.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:44 PM) Kaperbole is a word he made up to describe his own actions, you know. Surely you kid.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:38 PM) Did you see they suddenly have a new plan in action and it somehow lowered the cost by over 100B? I'd like to know how. heh $100B = pimple on an elephant's ass. GMAB. OOOOOOOOOOH COMPROMISE! What's really happening? $100B goes to the Blue Dog districts in some other bill.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) I think Kap, and myself to some degree, are going to extremes to make a point. People are taking these extremes in a very literal sense, which is their right, but the point is that neither of us (from what I gather here) trust the government to run health care any differently than it runs everything else -- right into deficit and right into the ground. Healthcare is the cookie jar the government has never been able to get near -- every time the badass cookies inside beat it down when it tried...and they smell blood in the water now. The people have turned on healthcare...so strike while the irons hot. Why? Because they realize the cookies overflowing in that jar are made of money...and they want it. All of it. Regardless of what happens after they get it. Here's an angle that a lot of people probably haven't thought of, and I have over the last week or so, anal accountant that I am. How much reserves have to be kept to pay out insurance claims? That is another HUGE reason they want their hands on this, is because there's a lot of real money tied up for "reinsurance" and the government wants it in their coffers. Hello, William Buffet, Obama supporter. You don't think he's going to get a huge chunk of this deal? Why? Where's the money...?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:13 PM) No. In fact, if you look carefully at this thread, you won't see me disagreeing with kap at all. I've suggested a few alternatives, but I don't agree with either party's stance right now, which I think I've made clear. I say that because... I'm just having fun. I'm bored. But I need to get my house cleaned up now before the government comes over to check my toilets are calibrated properly. However, I certainly believe that the government needs to get the hell out of my life, Kaperbole aside.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) I was being nice. The only thing I'd have a problem with is the fact that I can't look off in a distance and estimate kilometers or see an object and say about how many centimeters it is. But that's only because feet and miles are all I know and I'd just have to get used to the change. You're just jealous because it would make your penis smaller... oh wait... /ducks I really have gone off the deep end today.

Yep. I just bend over and take everything government and shove it right up my ass and smile! Because, they are the only ones that can take care of us.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:36 PM) I'm all for shifting the profits currently directed at insurers (because I see no innovation incentives there) to doctors and researchers. Why should the insurance (not provider, care, hospital, research, etc) industry be for-profit? Why shouldn't it be? 8% profits (typically) - wow, it's bankrupting America. Just like the oil companies. Big bad corporations, they suck. Give to the little guys, er I mean unions.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:31 PM) What innovations come from profit for health insurers? What's the profit motivating there? Hypothetical If we could provide the exact same system as now but strictly through non-profit methods so that the costs are lower, why should I be against this? Appeal to/ against an ideological buzzword doesn't count, either. "SYSTEM" is part of the equation, not cherrypicking "insurers". It's all part of the same system.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) Huh? That doesn't have anything to do with morals. It's a legit question, completely separate from abortion which can only be used as a massive red herring. Is there something we could be doing to make this better? Is there something we're doing wrong? Why can't we ask that about ourselves? Taking over my health care is a moral question. If you want to deal with morality, then deal with all of it, and quit cherry picking what liberty you want to take away from me. I'm sick and damn tired of the government telling me what lightbulbs I have to use, how much water is in my toilet, who my doctor will be, etc. etc. etc. Where does it stop? It's ok, though, government is the only answer to evil profit making. Resdistribute wealth... We have RIGHTS TO HAPPINESS now - we all must be "more equal". Or something. It's all tied together - the government wants more and more power, and we just gladly hand it over. It becomes a moral question because there's that right to choose for women, yet, we can't choose our own f***ing health care. Right. Now I'll get "straw man". Uh huh. Everything's a straw man.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:54 AM) WTF kind of response is that? You're (not you personally, people with the stance they have about abortion) like to throw that in people's faces. It's stupid - SO concerned about infant mortality rates when abortions kill millions. Ok. Don't even talk to me about that, because it's not worth my time.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:52 AM) Why is the infant mortality rate so high in the US? You have a moral high ground to talk about this when abortion is legal? Please. Next.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:15 AM) Because the Republican and Centrist position is you should not have a government choice in health care and the highly concentrated highly profitable near local monopolies currently in the system are the best way to go. Competition sucks and is anti-capitalist. Oh here we go. EVIL COMPANIES MAKING PROFITS! HOW DARE THEY! Government comes in, has NO profit incentive, will cut prices, which causes the other companies to lose money, which shuts them down. But that's ok. Competition sucks, especially when said competition is ADMITTED to making these companies not profit to kill them. We pay more in the world because we save more lives. PERIOD. But, for some reason, that doesn't matter, now does it? I'm sure the liberal blogs prove me wrong, even though it's common sense. Heart patients - how many people do not have the heart attacks they would have had even 15 years ago because of medical advancements? Holy s***, those Europeans are on the cutting edge of technology - I'm sure they're the reason why innovations are up, right? Eh? Eh? Cancer - I don't even have to delve into this one, because it's too obvious. If you have cancer in the rest of the world, you're a lot more likely to die. But now I'm certain the liberal blogs say I'm "fear mongering". f*** profits. Everything should be given to the government to spread back to the nanny state. It's obviously the best solution to everything.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) That's really no where near the point I was trying to make, but whatever. The point I was trying to make is the GOP is running some really nasty, our right lies, scare tactics to try and destroy healthcare reform/Obama. There are things to attack in the bill if you want, but dont try and make it sound like the Government is going to require all old people with an illness we be forced into a furnace. And what the Democrats are proposing are FLAT OUT LIES. And that was my point. You want to charge that the GOP is "flat out lying", so are the Democrats. "You will not lose your coverage if you're happy with it". Lie. "Take a painkiller (if you're too old)" - Barack Obama "You'll have choices for your health care". Lie. (at least not like today). I can go on and on, but I'm disingenuous.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:54 AM) It sounds pretty clearly like disingenuous bulls*** to me. You know damn well that's AHB's schitck. Look at what he posted again. What the AARP is saying is bunk. They're liberal, they don't care about seniors, I don't give a s*** whether they take their money or not. Of course I just mindlessly post "disingenuous bulls***".

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:14 AM) Spend the day at a pool... I work 6 days a week, and usually my off day is spent playing golf or doing nothing b/c I just want to relax. On a bigger scale, visit my sister and brother in Texas. I'm going down next week for 6 days before going back to Knoxville. Should be a nice little vacation. Where in Texas? Bring your fan. It's been hot, when it's not been raining.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) Ok I'm trying to figure out what this has to with what AHB posted but I give up. GOP (and associated "conservative" orgainizations and sources) = liars on everything, gross distortions! Democrats (and associated "liberal" organizations and sources) = the truth, they will give us everything we want, utopia for all!

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:00 AM) Oh Good Lord: GOP: Dem Health Care Proposal Promotes/Requires euthanasia HOLY CRAP! I dont want grampy to be put to death! SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!! Oh Wait, It doesnt say any of what they claim: Even AARP.. ya know... the people that want to help old people, say the new line of attack is a joke. And AARP would be the first to cry fowl in a case like this. Yes, believe everything the Democrats tell you. We are going to cut costs, yet have much more "efficient" coverage of all things. That's talking out of both sides of your mouth, and anecdotal evidence in other "more civilized" (borrowing this liberal catch phrase) nations that offer government sponsored medicine shows AS A FACT that older people suffer in coverage. It MUST be lies, though, if "conservatives" say it's true.
