QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 10:01 PM) Minnesota's future might be brighter, but they don't have enough to win a World Series. Wait, am I missing something? If Minny made it to the playoffs, they'd send Liriano and Santana for three out of the five Division Series games, and four out of seven games in the Championship Series and World Series. Nobody in baseball comes close to matching that. I hate to say it, but the Twinkies have as good a shot as anybody to win in the playoffs.

Teams that could be interested in Javy or Freddy
CWSGuy406 replied to DBAHO's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 06:59 PM) BMac would be an upgrade. The sox would probably deal Freddy for a solid bullpen guy to replace BMac and a very good prospect. Whether there is a team out there willing, who knows. But Freddy is an upgrade over the other arms mentioned--Lieber, Livian, etc. Esp. a team that wants to set up their playoff rotation [ie Mets, STL]. Damn, I would love to see Kenny try and tie Texas into the Soriano rumors and get a three way deal. I'm thinking something along the lines of Garcia to Texas, Soriano/reliever to the Sox, and Broadway + Podsednik + Liotta + Texas prospect to Washington. You wanna talk about a clubhouse shakeup, though... that might worry some a little bit, but I think the improvement of Garcia to BMac and Pods to Soriano would more than make up for that. He's been injured and awful. The guy has a 6.09 ERA. As opposed to the Hudson trade, the Mulder trade has been an absolute steal for Oakland. There's no doubt in my mind that Mulder would be way worse than all six starters we currently have, and probably worse than Haeger, Phillips, and Tracey. At this point, that's how low I think of him... -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 04:39 AM) Could you DFA someone like Gload, and put B-Mac into a 6 man rotation and acquire another reliever like Roberto Hernandez perhaps? Why does everyone like these Pirate relievers? Our bullpen is perfectly fine the way it is now, and if we need another reliever, Tracey's the guy -- he can throw all nine innings (if necessary, which it'll probably become if they don't DL Buehrle). Then again, maybe we can help the Pirates out and flip 'em Lance Broadway and Ray Liotta. Can't have enough 'veteran presence', ehh? :rolleye I'll just repost my thoughts w/r/t McCarthy from SSS: Put McCarthy into the rotation, going to a six-man rotation. Cut Gload, and call up Tracey as the longman who will piggyback McCarthy until he can build up his arm strength. I was weary of the idea of putting McCarthy in the bullpen at the beginning of the year. I was told that it was a good move because if anyone was ineffective or hurt, McCarthy could be plugged in. Well, right now we have two starters who I have confidence in, and three wildcards. Start stretching McCarthy out. If it fails, so what? At least we won't be left thinking "what if?" in October, when we're out and both Minny and Detroit are in. [/snip] I also think that if somehow, someway, this team got itself into a position to make the playoffs, you can have three solid starters. Contreras, Garland, and then your idea of a piggyback with Vazquez and Garcia. Will Buehrle turn into his usual self? I dunno... Maybe DIPS is taking back all the supposed "luck" Mark has been pitching with the past couple seasons.

Hawk actually criticizing the team today. Good to see: -Made hints of ripping Konerko for his stupid baserunning mistake. -Rips the pitch selection to Punto -- first pitch changeup. I agree -- gotta go fastball or curveball there.

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 07:45 PM) well, out pitching staff for 2008 is now something of a mystery isnt it...the count, bmac, wes whisler and then who? Tyler Lums-- Oh, wait... (That one's for Flash)
-
Soriano would'a hit it onto the Dan Ryan...
-
Sheesh -- how many hanging pitches is Silva going to get away with?
-
Can McCarthy pitch the rest of the game?
-
Nah Nah Nah Nah, Nah Nah Nah Nah, Hey Hey Hey, Good bye!!!! (To fathom) You know I'm only kidding...
-
BTW, I want to make a comment about last night's game. Everyone b****es about our lack of smallball, but honestly, do you think we would've scored more runs against Santana last year? If you would've told me, with Contreras on the mound, that we'd tag Santana for three runs over seven innings, I probably would have taken it. We had a shot to get to their bullpen, and didn't do the job.
-
Why are our hitters always fooled by Silva's changeup? Thank you, Jermaine. I'll shut up for the next minute.

It's like a train wreck. Can't.... avert.... eyes.

Quick question about Matt Garza. What was the knock on him going into the 2005 draft? I'm not going to pretend and act like I know more than the Sox scouting staff. But why wasn't his name even in consideration? The three names I remember the Sox talking about were Bogusevic out of Tulane, Carrillo from Miami, and Broadway. I remember reading about Garza prior to the draft, and really liking what I saw. Specifically, I remember Baseball America absolutely raving about his breaking ball, and you rarely see this in the MLB.com Player Scouting Reports, but the last sentence in Garza's said this: (Link Here.) He's also a relatively big guy, too, so putting on some MPH to his fastball wasn't out of the question either. I'm not asking why we didn't take him. I'm just wondering why he wasn't talked about more in the 'White Sox circles', if that makes sense. P.S. Defending Broadway for a second here: There were 13 (If I counted correctly) pitchers taken in the first round of 2005 draft. Out of those pitchers, you can really only say that two have clearly been more successful than Broadway (Pelfrey and Garza). You might be able to put Craig Hansen into that group, too, but he's a reliever, so he should be ahead of Broadway. I'm of the mindset that Broadway will never throw a pitch in a White Sox uniform. However, if it brings us a player who is worth it, that, in my mind, will be just as good (key word being 'worth').

QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 02:51 AM) and I'm not sure they have sufficient hunger for it. Yeah, we definitely should have acquired Bob Wickman before the Braves did. Damnit.

I was wondering the same thing when Garfein (sp?) mentioned the three deals. Thinking about this logically for a second... The bullpen is set. You have Jenks as the closer, Cotts/MacD/Thorton as your setup men (McCarthy, sort of, too), and Riske + McCarthy as your middle relievers/long men. I know we've been clamoring for a trade of Garcia or Vazquez, but I just don't think either of those two will be going anywhere. In the offseason, I'm guessing Garcia will be packing his bags, but it's going to be tough as hell completing a deal with so much money involved, not to mention stretching out McCarthy for the next month in preparing him for his full-time rotation job. That leaves the offense. Podsednik looks like the only starter who has a shot at being replaced. Gload is the only bench guy who might be replaced; I'm talking about looking for a real fourth OFer, someone who can play all three spots, not just the corners. How about a package deal with Washington for Ryan Church and Soriano? Of course, if Church is going to cost another good prospect, then I'd just say forget about it and look for someone else, but I'd be willing to throw in another middling prospect for Church.

GMs are still fawning over Ray Liotta? It must be his name... I really wish Liotta went instead of Lumsden. Kenny can make me feel better about yesterday's deal by pulling off a steal of Soriano -- Liotta + Broadway + Podsednik and I'll pack Scotty's bags AND drive him to Midway.

This year has really been a lot different w/r/t Kenny's trades than any other. I personally cannot remember such an exodus of good prospects. In the past, other than Reed (I might be missing others), it seemed like we were trading some high ceiling guys, but guys who hadn't quite put it together yet. Maybe "hadn't quite put it together" isn't the right phrase. I'm just saying -- we've lost Chris Young, Gio Gonzalez, and Tyler Lumsden -- in the past year. At the time these moves were made, I'd say that all three were in our top five. Now, Gonzalez has fallen back to earth (lots of BBs and HRs, although the K-rate is still superb), but Young, Lumsden -- these guys are legit. I know people like to throw around phrases "win now" and "prospects haven't proven ****", but I'm sort of with Flash (not to his extreme, but with his general premise). I don't want this to be a two year run, and then a fall back to mediocrity and 'average-ness'. Coming full-circle with the trade today, guys with Lumsden's stuff are really hard to find. If things haven't changed since spring training, we're talking about a lefty (who was coming off surgery) throwing in the mid-90s (not touching the mid-90s -- sitting at 92-94) with a good slider. I'm not as pissed about Cortez -- I can understand why some would be -- but that's mainly because I don't really start to track prospects until they hit high-A. How much is MacDougal really going to help us this year? At most, he pitches what, 20-30 innings? We're talking about a reliever with a.)violent mechanics (I'm not pitching coach, but that looks as far from 'clean' as can be) and b.)very little track record of success. He's had one good year out of the bullpen, coming in 2004. In 2003, he was what I would deem average, with a 4.08 ERA and eight blown saves in 35 opportunities. Is his stuff intriguing? Hell yeah it is. But again, he's a reliever -- his impact on the team is and will be extremely limited. You would've thought that Kenny Williams, of all people, would know that you don't need to go trading solid young arms for relievers. Look at the guys in the 'pen. Jenks - acquired off waivers. Thorton - acquired for Borchard. Cotts - a PTBNL in the Koch deal. McCarthy - homegrown player. Riske - acquired for Lopez. I guess that's the most dissappointing thing. Other than money, the Sox have given up nothing in putting together a pretty decent bullpen. Bye bye, Tyler. Good luck in KC.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 09:41 PM) Kenny Williams just said to reporters that he WILL NOT be trading McCarthy. I don't even know if I should believe him anymore. That sound you hear is the sigh of relief of thousands of Sox fans. Phew.
-
I don't mind this move. I don't know if he'll throw out baserunners better than Widger. He can't do any worse than Widger did at the plate this season. He knows Buehrle and Garland damn well, and I'm sure Cotts probably pitched to him in 2004 at some point. It's an upgrade -- not much of an upgrade, but for such a minimal price (the Sox are probably giving up very little), I'm not complaining.

I left my AIM on today. I'm NEVER supposed to leave my AIM on during a Sox game. Sonnuva beach. Promise it won't happen again... (I'm not superstitious at all. Not one bit. )

Rosenthal: White Sox have interest in Gordon and Daniel Cabrera
CWSGuy406 replied to Frankensteiner's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 07:03 PM) The Tigers and their package starting with H. Sanchez will easily top what we likely offer. Soriano is actually the #2 guy on my wish list right now. Well, I've heard that Washington is also asking for Maybe (ugh -- Maybin, that is) as well. I guess it would depend on how Bowden views Podsednik. If he thinks of him as a guy who can 'sparkplug' his offense for the next three years and be a good leadoff man, then that'll help us. If he thinks of him the same way I think of him... well, then, my offer probably wouldn't work. We just need the starting pitching to get going (duh). I'm giving the offense a break -- they were the ones who carried us throughout the first half, not the pitching. Time for the starters to put the team on it's back and have a string of 18-out-of-20 quality starts, something of that sort. -

I'd offer something along the lines of Broadway + Haeger/Phillips + Podsednik, but I doubt that gets it done. Soriano would be an intriguing possibility, but I wouldn't really want him past this year (thus why the package above is relatively weak). The extra draft picks would be nice, though. -
Boooooooone! has been solid since his initial hiccupp. I'm sure he'll probably be a September callup...
