QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 03:14 AM) What the hell are you talking about? Small has proven that he can be a successful MLB starter in the AL so far this season. All I've ever said about Baj is that he obviously wasn't highly regarded within the organization, and that I could understand why Adkins was on the team above him because Ozzie liked him from the year before, and Adkins was stretched out to go longer than Baj. No, that Baj is just a AAA fodder who will only be successful against AAA hitters. GMAB. He's started six games. When he does this for the rest of this year, and all of next year, then you can tell me that he can be a successful starter. Until then, I'll look at his career 4.99 ERA and his 4.37 minor league ERA as proof that he's nothing more then a last-arm-in-the-bullpen, AAAA type.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 03:16 AM) Yeah, Guillen is a bad in-game manager, but guys like Dusty, Brenly, and McClendon are awful all around managers. I'd take Steve Stone as my manager though, and this is coming from someone who hates the Cubs. That's fine, but stupidity like saying Dusty Baker is a better manager then Guillen needs to be called up. Really, that's the dumbest thing someone has said around here in a long, long time. Nite, what happened to "f*** this board, I'll find a new one"?

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 02:43 AM) Honestly, I'd take Lloyd McLendon(a guy with fire, and is known for smarts) over Ozzie. I like fathom want the same thing in a manager. I know we won't ever get a Bobby Cox, but I want a guy who knows what he's doing. Give me Torre, give me LaRussa, give me McLendon, Leyland, Scosia, Tracy, Brenly, Howe, Randolph, Pinella, (does the list need to go further for me to get the point through? hope not). You really know nothing about baseball if you're calling for Dusty Baker to replace Guillen. Same with Brenly, and several others on that list.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 03:06 AM) I'll take Aaron Small over Duque in a heartbeat. If Aaron Small was on the Sox, you'd trott out the same line that you use for guys like Bajenaru.

Uhh, let's see. You've put up a 5.10 ERA. That's decent for a fifth starter. This is a playoff run, and the situation is crucial. Keeping this team in the game, i.e. four runs in six innings, something like that, isn't good enough anymore. We need to give this team the best shot to win, every time out. McCarthy, at this point, is greater then... well, you. When you're second biggest fan (me, behind Ozzie Guillen) has left your corner, you're in trouble. Stop sucking. Please.
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 02:38 AM) I said rotation. McCarthy isn't in our rotation last time I checked. Small's ERA so far is 2.82 the whole year. It's 3.00 the last 30 days. That's pretty damn good. He would be the 2nd best pitcher on this staff currently. So yes, we should find a way to get him on our team. He's pitched 51.0 innings. That's about 7 games worth of starts. Was our staff dominating earlier in the year? Yeah. Is it dominating now during the stretch run? Hell no and it hasn't been for the most part after the AS break. LOL, yeah, we should put Aaron Small in our rotation because of 51 IP. I mean, that's not a small sample size or nothing like that... :rolly Debating with you = pointless.

My goodness... On the Packers/Lions broadcast, they were talking about the Lions making a Superbowl in their hometown. Give me a f***ing break. They played decent against a team that played like s***. For all that their offense gets talked up, they scored 17 points. I'm sorry, but I hope Joey Harrington prepares to be on his back this next Sunday, 'cause that's what's gonna happen. Tommie Harris will wipe that smile off his face real quickly... -
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 01:37 AM) Let's check the ERA of our staff the past 30 days. Garland: 4.35 Buehrle: 3.86 Garcia: 4.32 Hernandez: 6.59 Contreras: 2.72 Care to rethink that statement because the only dominating one I see in there is Count. Our 2nd best pitcher can't do anything against elite teams. Hernandez has been sucking majorly. Garland and Garcia are nothing better than mediocre. And remember, this is the last 30 days, not just this month. 30 games is equal to about six starts. In six starts, Aaron Small has a 2.82 ERA. Damn, we better find a way to get that guy in this team...

There's what, 20 games left, right? Let's say Cleveland plays .750 ball, which is pretty possible. They play Oakland for three, and us for six. Then, the rest is bleh. We'd have to play .500 to make the playoffs. If this team can't play .500, with seven games left against KC/Detroit, and six left against Minny -- then man... there won't be a paper bag big enough for White Sox fandom. BTW -- don't quote me on it, but I don't think we draw Santana for next weekend's series at the Dome. So, there's your good news of the day.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 01:07 AM) Don't you mean up in the order for Uribe? I'm still not sure why in the world we'd put Rowand in the 3rd spot against righties. At this point, the whole offense is just in a state of disarray. The way I see it, right now, you have two really good hitters in Uribe and Konerko, one hitter who's usually good for getting on base at least once a day in Podsednik, two hitters who it depends on the pitcher (if they'll hit well) in Dye and Iguchi, and the rest (Everett and Pierzynski falling under the super-streaky category, and I guess you can throw Dye in there though he's not the problem offensively, and then Crede, where you just hope for anything from him). Anyways, you need to have Uribe and Konerko hitting within two spots of each other. If Everett is going to hit fifth, teams are going to pitch around Konerko. Everett is a threat, but not nearly as much as most DHs. In all of this rubble that I've just put together, I'm trying to say that I want Konerko hitting with Uribe on base. That seems like the only way we're gonna score.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 01:03 AM) Outside of a few stretches in this 2nd half, our starting rotation hasn't been dominating. I'll feel a lot more comfortable about the situation as a whole if McCarthy is put in a rotation. And this coming from an El Duque fan. He needs to be put in the rotation. Uribe NEEDS to be put lower in the order.

Bears vs. Redskins 9/11 Game Thread

Jason, I actually agree what you said. I haven't said much about the game, so here are my thoughts... -The offensive line did really well on pass protection, but really poorly making holes for Thomas Jones. Tom Thayer was talking about how, on the run, it's not like the defensive line was in the backfield all day, but they weren't giving any ground, either, and I agree with that. -I'm pretty happy with our WR core. Looks like Mushin is the go-to guy, Berrian and Bradley being the speedsters on the outside, and Wade and Gage being situational/posession receivers. I was really pleased to see Orton hit Gage down in the redzone. The only thing I was dissappointed in was seeing Moose drop a couple catchable passes. -Our TE's blow. Clark is no threat at all. On the field, he looks old and slow. -Defensively... I know they only let up nine points, but they still left me a wee-bit dissappointed. Early on, there were some third-downs where the Bears really could have taken the crowd out of it, yet they were able to complete some passes to move the ball a little bit. But I'm not gonna nit-pick. They were good today, and I'm just saying that they could have been better. But that's pretty encouraging that on a medicore day defensively, they held the opposing team to single digits. -
Cleveland has 67 less stolen bases then we have. How the hell are they scoring runs without that balance that the Sox have? Hawk tells me we have a lot of balance. Isn't balance good?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 12:17 AM) If I were to trade for a 3rd baseman, I'd take a chance and talk to Seattle about taking on Beltre and the remainder of his contract. I don't know if Seattle wants to shift their focus from two big boppers or not (it would be early for them to give up on it). However, Beltre is a really good offensive player and a stud defensive player as well. I've been thinking about that for a while. He fits right in with pitching and defense. And, he's coming off a down year. If Seattle eats some of the contract, I'd definitely be for it.

5.5 Indians about to be up 2-0, and Joe Mauer isn't playing. The Twinkies won't score.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 12, 2005 -> 12:15 AM) Thomas Jones is a lot more productive at his position than any 2nd WR the Bears have. Any RB in the Bears system is going to produce about the same. As long as the opposition can stuff the box, no RB on this planet will have extremely productive games. No. Thomas Jones is mediocre, and no team will win anything with him at RB, unless Peyton Manning is behind center. Having Mike Williams today would have meant nothing. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 11, 2005 -> 06:30 PM) I'm sure happy the Bears took a RB in the draft instead of another WR to compliment Moose. He's the only WR that can get open. Yeah, 'cause having Mike Williams on the field today really would've ensured us a victory. I mean, Thomas Jones is probably one of the best halfbacks in the league, right? :rolly GMAB. I can see you ripping on the decision to draft Benson rather then Cadillac, but Jones isn't an elite back. We need an elite back to win. I fully expect to see a lot more carries -- ten plus -- from Benson next week. -
Is AJ Pieryznski still alive? He's had two homers since August 1st, and hasn't had a hit in 18 ABs. If this team doesn't go to KC and beat the living hell out of 'em, heads need to roll.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 11, 2005 -> 09:54 PM) And Ross "that's a HR at Charlotte" Gload to the list. My brother and I went to the game today. When Gload flied out to end the game, my brother turns to me and says, "Oh, Hawk must be drooling at the mouth on that flyout."

What about, as a switch in the order, going with... Podsednik Uribe Iguchi Konerko Everett Dye Pierzynski Rowand Crede Uribe goes opposite field most of the time anyways, so you're not really affecting him all that much. And Iguchi gets to do what he's done most of his career, other than this year, so that'll help him, too.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 11, 2005 -> 04:27 PM) Seattle's D is pretty good probably around top 10, although losing Okafor and Lucas hurt. I'd probably start Leftwich, he's always good for around 300 yards, 2TD's. Over Matt Hasslebeck against JAC? I realize the Jags have a good front seven, but how good is their secondary? -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 11, 2005 -> 04:13 PM) Don't start Rudi, he's been benched; I really don't think Portis is going to do much today. My only other option is Marshall Faulk. I'm starting Cadillac for sure, and leaning towards Ruudy, but should I consider starting Portis/Faulk? BTW -- need some WR help. Need to start two of the following... Andre Johnson vs. BUF Steve Smith vs. NO P Burress vs. ARI Stokely vs. BAL Ma Jones vs. SEA How good is Seattle's defense? Should I consider starting Leftwich? -

I've decided not to start Portis is fantasy this week. I dunno, I just think that the 'Skins offense is pretty one dimensional. So, I'm going with the Cadilac and Ruuuuudy. Go Bears! I'll only see the first quarter, as I have tix to the Sox game, but hopefully the defense can carry the team.
