  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 01:56 AM) ENOUGH OF THOMAS IN THE 3RD HOLE! He's turned into one of the most selfish hitters I've ever seen in baseball. A pitch right down broadway, and he's selfish? Hmm... Should I trust the guy who has gotten on-base at a .400+ clip for most of his career, or a message board lurker? GMAFB. I can live with your first statement, but quit the bulls***. Selfish my ass.
  2. I miss the Scotty of earlier in the year who would draw more walks and work the count better.
  3. My fellow Soxtalkonians -- Omar Vizquel does not make that play. And a lot of you know that, but some think that Vizquel is a star defensively. That is why Juan Uribe is on this team.
  4. Both WildCard races are going to be real good this year. You'll have, in the AL -- Oakland, Texas (assuming ANA takes the West), ChiSox/Minny, Cleveland, New York, Baltimore, and Toronto. And in the NL, the only teams I can think of that have no shot are Cincy and Pittsburg. Arizona and Milwaukee are teams that have small-to-slim chances, but like I said, should be a fun couple of months...
  5. Thanks guys, I appreciate it.
  6. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 08:47 PM) Jackie Manual will be a great sign for someone, more so than even Jawad Williams. Jackie is an athletic 6'5 SG that is an absolute defensive stopper. He also has the athletic ability to get to the hole and finish. He needs to work on his shot, but so did Bruce Bowen when he first arrived. I was gonna say the same thing about Manual. I'm certainly not the one to talk much about the NBA, but Manual looked like one helluva defender when I saw him play in college. Not much offensively, but extremely good defensively.
  7. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 08:26 PM) Hey, I posted this exact point in response to the same post before I saw what you wrote. And both of you are wrong. You're using RF and ZR from this year -- a half season's worth of data, not much. 3E8 showed the past years with Uribe being much, much better. And even if you're gonna use defense as a standard using this years numbers, Uribe has almost two more Win Shares than Vizquel has defensively. Other than errors, which mean very little in the grand scheme of things, Uribe is much better than Vizquel defensively. A better mentality? What the heck? Have you checked his OPS? And his walks? I'm more excited about Young than I am about Sweeney or Anderson...
  8. I'm usually not the one to bring up the whole clubhouse chemistry thing, but isn't Burnett sort of a jag? I thought I'd heard that he was basically calling up Carl Pavano (prior to this season) basically talking to him about signing with the Yankees. If KW thinks Aubrey Huff can put this team over the top, you gotta do it. Then, after this season, you don't have to worry about resigning Konerko, as you could stick Huff in several different places (most likely one of the corner IF spots). He's posted OPS+ of 132, 139, and 124 the past three seasons, and is 28 (IIRC) this year. Like I said, I'd start off with a package of Crede + Fields + Tracey, as well as a young arm like Josh Fields 2 or Jeff Baj or Arnie Munoz or Felix Diaz. Wow, nice play Jody Gerut.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 05:26 PM) Vizquel has committed 3 errors this year, Uribe has committed 8. Uribe has a lower "range factor" than Vizquel. Vizquel has both more attempts and more putouts. They have roughly an equal number of double plays turned. The stats don't show Uribe being a better SS. I think he can become one the longer he stays at short, but he's certainly not better than Vizquel, not yet. I don't think that RF is really used well unless it's over a season. Was Vizquel really better (RF) in past years, too? That said, I haven't looked at the stats. I've watched a lot of Giants games on TV and Vizquel doesn't show much range, but that's just from watching, no statistical backup. EDIT: I've never gotten the total concept of 'Win Shares', but per THT, Juan Uribe has 3.7 Defensive Win Shares to Vizquel's 1.3. LOL -- Timo Perez has a negative half of a Win Share at the plate this year.
  10. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 03:26 PM) A .276 OBP (and .657 OPS) is what is wrong with Juan Uribe. That puts him down there with Christian Guzman. Uribe has had one good hitting year in his career, last year. Every other year his OBP is below .300, even when he was in Colorado. He is worse than Joe Crede, frankly. As I argued above, if we trade for Schmidt, then we should also swap Uribe for Omar Vizquel, who gets on at a .357 clip, has more speed, is a switch hitter, and whose defense is as good as Uribe's. Plus Omar has playoff and World Series experience. He's a better #2 hitter when Iguchi is rested, and a better #1 when Pods is rested. Otherwise, he would look very good at the bottom of the lineup starting or continuing rallies. Fair enough on the OBP, but I doubt Uribe ends the year so low. I'd bet his OPS would end up above .700, too -- but he hasn't been very good at the plate. That said, I don't expect Uribe to get on base. I expect him to make up for that with a better-than-average SLG%, which he hasn't done this year either -- but I expect it in the second half. One more thing. In talking about what someone said earlier, I think adding another bat is more important than another arm. And, to get Aubrey Huff, I'd start the package with Josh Fields. Obviously, there'd have to be more than just him, but I'd certainly be willing to sacrafice last year's first-round pick to get Huff... And Uribe is not = Vizquel defensively. Uribe is much, much better than Vizquel defensively. Uribe has a better arm and more range...
  11. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 04:40 PM) Not when it is that obvious Sadly, I can't tell if he was being sarcastic or not... :headshake
  12. QUOTE(go-sox05 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 02:20 PM) maybe we can trade Uribe for M Tejda, well i mean Baltimore would have to throw in some cash too. For future reference, green is used for sarcasm.
  13. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 04:12 AM) I would rather trade for a stud starting pitcher and just grab a cheap guy like Randa for average prospects. Who says Randa would come so cheap? He's having a career year, I believe an OPS right around .850, with something like a .360 OBP. I can't say he'd cost a fortune, but he's on a one year deal (with an option? no?) and a cheap contract -- I don't think he'd be so dirt cheap...
  14. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 03:53 AM) Umm, I think the White Sox are paying. I wish I was paying it cause it would make me an owner. Reinsdorf said that money is not an issue. So start adding. Why the hell do you care so much about payroll? Your not paying for it? Your not the White Sox accountant. What the f*** do you care? And I think that Jenks is ready and he will be up this year. Jenks' walk rate is atrocious. Qwerty is dead on. Let's give Jeff Baj a shot before Jenks. And, Vizquel is worse defensively than Uribe -- IMO. EDIT: One more thing -- why is everyone talking about adding another starting pitcher? Am I watching the wrong games? Our offense isn't really good. I know, I know, the chemistry thing, but how about we look at Aubrey Huff a little more? I know you lose defense, but it's more than made up for with his offense. Another bullpen arm would be my second priority, the deeper the bullpen, the better I like our chances. And Kalapse is right about Oakland. Unless Beane gets an overwhelmingly good deal, he isn't trading Chavez/Zito. They're about to win again tonight, making them what -- four, five games under .500? Right or wrong, Beane thinks his team has a shot at the playoffs. And speaking of Oakland, I don't want to see anyone b**** out Beane for the Mulder deal. Haren is pitching better than Mulder, at what, 1/20th the price? 300K vs. $7 million, isn't it? Plus Barton, and Calero (who's been bad in 16 IP, but injured for a while too).
  15. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 08:09 PM) I'm not sure the answer to this, but unless management is planning on increasing the payroll next year by at least $10 million (which is what it will cost for this new starting pitcher everyone is drooling over), this all strikes me as a fantasy exercise. I certainly don't want to surrender our top prospects on a 3-month rental. (Though Roger Clemens has tempted me.) The only reason the Garcia trade has worked for us (we could sure use Mike Morse at SS instead of Uribe, couldn't we?) is we signed Garcia for 3 years. -------------------------------- In the outfield, we're stuck with Jermaine Dye through 2006, but after that we need a home grown guy to take his place. SS is another position we could use talent from within. Umm... what exactly is the problem with Uribe? I realize he's been bad this season, but you're not gonna find many SS's who are better defensively than Uribe. Plus, Morse might eventually have to move to 3B. I'd take Uribe over Morse every day of the week, I don't know exactly what you're getting at there. I believe he makes something between $3-5 million bucks (through his extension) in the next couple of years, he's one of the last ones this team who's hurting us. And, for those who suggested Jamie Moyer? Uhh -- no.
  16. Do you guys remember Jeckle's old avatar? The one with the sign of the guy hitting his head on the keyboard? That's what I feel like doing right now after reading this thread. There's three pages of b****ing back and forth over who should start the friggin' All-Star game, rather than talking about one of the most exciting wins of the year. Sheesh, guys... enjoy this friggin' season, we're (about) ten games up before June's end, and you're still b****ing. Damn... rant over, sorry for making all of you read it.
  17. Chill out, fellas. No need for the namecalling. If you don't want to see what Schmidt's doing tonight, don't click this thread. We won, and Minny is losing to KC. Let's be happy.
  18. It was a beautiful pitch by Sisco, got him right in on the hands, and the liner took the Royals SS (Gotay?) right to the bag for the DP. Come on, Royals! There we go... :banghead
  19. Not to be picky, but it's actually "AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!". Nice, Hermy.
  20. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 01:32 AM) Great, I turn the game on in time to see Hermanson blow another save. Yep...
  21. I agree with Jim. Hope that KC takes one out of three. Anything else is just spectacular.
  22. He Gawn, your sig is beautiful. I might replace Fields with Young, but I love it.
  23. QUOTE(Stephen @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 12:46 AM) Same here. I don't see how anyone can watch basketball. Boring doesn't even say it. Went to one NBA game a couple of years ago and walked out at the half. I agree. I can watch certain teams -- the Bulls, for example, were really fun to watch this year, and the NBA Finals were good as hell. But, other than that, the NBA is boring. To me, at least, and I know most people will disagree. But, there's no comparison between playoff hockey and playoff basketball. Playoff hockey is so friggin' exciting, even if I'm not a fan of either team. To increase the fanbase, when it comes back, they gotta crack down on all of the guys who are clutching and holding. Obstruction, I believe it's called (I'm not so great with the penalty terms). They also gotta crack down on all the stickwork. People say that the NHL needs to rid itself of fighting, yet, I can't remember seeing someone being severely injured in a fight. All of the severe injuries come from cheapshots, ala the Burtuzzi shot -- that wasn't a fight, that was a bulls*** cheapshot. I'd also like to see the redline removed from the two-line pass -- as well as the smaller goalie pads. They need to get a deal done. Losing another season would really be a downer, as the 'Hawks finally have a plan and have stuck it out -- Bell, Calder, Arny, and Ruutu are going to be the base of this team, and they're going to let them go through their growing pains.
  24. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 02:18 AM) Hey, you never know. When a team is looking for ML players, they might take a guy who can play in MLB right now over a prospect who could be a few years away still. Chavez makes a lot of money, and hasn't hit well this year. He'd be getting ripped apart by some people here were he on the White Sox. That wasn't really even my point though. My point was that Chavez isn't even a possibility. A GM would be fired on the spot if he were offered Timo Perez or Ryan Sweeney, and took Timo Perez. And Chavez makes $10 million a year, plays gold glove defense, and is entering his prime -- I expect him to play at a 125 OPS+. His normal OPS would be much better if he played somewhere else, too -- I'd have to imagine that he gets a ton of AB's taken away just because the huge foul ball territory there in Oakland... If I'm gonna pay a player $10 million bucks a season, Chavez is just about the player who I'd want to give it to. Maybe $8-$9 is a little more appropriate, but I wouldn't mind Chavez at $10 mill. EDIT: Hmm, it's not as many AB's as I would have thought. Looking at his 2004 hitting chart from MLB.com, it looks like he only made seven (maybe eight) outs that in a normal stadium, would have been in the stands for a foul ball.
  25. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 10:42 PM) A.J. Burnett - I'd get him at a big price tag (trade value wise) if neccessary, especially if I thought I could ink him for another 3-4 years. He would be worth McCarthy, Marte, and their choice of Timo Perez or Ryan Sweeney to me. I'd even be willing to give up Everett if they would take a lesser reliever than Marte. Then again, who wouldn't pay that much for a 28 year old fireballer who's had success at the ML level? Unfortunately, the White Sox aren't interested at the present time, unless Kenny and Ozzie have completely fooled the media. Yeah, I'm sure Florida would have to think long and hard choosing between Ryan Sweeney and Timo Perez... What the hell are you talking about? Even when Chavez doesn't hit, he plays defense that is better than any other player in the league, at a position that is much more important (defensively) than 1B. Konerko's best OBP year was still more than .030 %-points behind Chavez'. Chavez is also entering his prime years, while Konerko will turn 30 next year. Saying that Chavez will be equal to Konerko in the next couple years is a real poor comparison, IMO.
