QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 03:44 AM) If we would sign someone like Ichiro, we would have to forfiet that pick to the Mariners though, correct? Nope -- you only forfeit it if the pick is #16 or lower (ie 16-30). We might lose our second rounder, but not our first.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 01:27 AM) In some ways, I'm with you. I've been watching the west coast games with my fiancee lately, and they've been great. The A's games last week were incredible. I know I'm a pathetic asshole for saying this, but with my belief the Sox won't make the playoffs this year, I'm following the Cubs/Brewers games a lot more rooting against the Cubs making the playoffs. Well, knock the hell out of some f***ing wood, but it looks like JD might be heating up. Should've been 3-for-3 coming into that AB if not for the great Utley play, and he was about ten feet from a homer there. Gosh I hope he gets hot... Please let him get hot. -

I really would like to hate that Tiger team -- seeing that they are from Detroit and all -- but I just can't. That team is so f***ing fun to watch, that organization is so well run, they definitely deserve every ounce of the success they're having right now. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 01:17 AM) Top of the ninth and he just hit 102 wow. Unbelievable. Did you see that Graffanino at bat? Three sliders, two on the outside corner with a filthy break, and the third one out of the zone. f***ing disgusting... -

Jesus Christ... Ninth inning, Verlander over the century mark, second pitch fastball at 98, third pitch slider outside corner. It'll be fun facing him, Bonderman, Porcello and Miller the next ten years. My gosh, Verlander is f***ing sick. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 12:28 AM) This has to be the least upset I've ever been during a Sox debacle. Deep down in my heart, I know it's for the best if they keep losing for a while. Last night was the first time in at least 5 years I didn't bother watching a single highlight of a Sox game I missed. At this point I'm just rooting for Dye to get hot as s*** over the next two weeks. It seems obvious that teams are interested in Dye despite his slow start, so it'd be great if he could have a nice two-week stretch where he hits .350 with five homers. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 12:26 AM) I wonder who will be the first one to take the fall if this massive losing tendency continues. I was told yesterday how a scout watched the Sox all last week (Pirates, I believe), and he said the Sox were the worst coached team he's seen all year. This is probably the dumbest move I've seen all year from Ozzie, and that's saying something. What exactly is the point of taking Fields out of the game IN THE FOURTH INNING? I don't give a f*** that he hasn't hit the ball in his short time up here, he needs to play. Stupid stupid stupid. -

What the f*** is Ozzie doing?!?!?!? Double switch Fields out of the game? Are you f***ing kidding me? -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 10:48 PM) If KW knowingly traded a hurt player, no matter how much it benefitted the White Sox, JR should get a new GM. So it's Kenny's fault that Philly was too stupid to have him take a physical or an MRI? We all saw last season that his MPH was down much more than anybody else on the Sox -- for Philly not to force Freddy to take a physical is just stupidity.

Ken Griffey Jr heading to Atlanta?
CWSGuy406 replied to Steve9347's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
The biggest PR hit that the Sox are looking at is the reality of losing Buehrle in a little over three months. If the Sox can resign Buehrle, it would buy a lot of goodwill amongst Sox fans. Of course, I understand that to resign him, one of the other starting pitchers need to go -- preferably Contreras. A month ago I would have said the Mets would be a great destination for Contreras, what with El Duque and the large Latin influence on that team along with moving to a bigger ballpark in a worse hitting league, but now I'm not so sure. Maine, Ollie Perez and El Duque have all been great for them. Glavine has been a little worse but still decent enough and Jorge Sosa has been outstanding. They also have Pedro coming back in about a month, so I don't see where Contreras would fit in. It's very disheartening to see that Dunn might be going to the Dodgers. Dye really seems like a perfect match for LA, and LA has the overabundance of young talent that the Sox could use. I'll be very pissed if I see Billingsly headed to Cincy for Dunn. If Colletti offered the Sox Billingsly for Dye, the Sox should be jumping all over that. -
QUOTE(Shadows @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 07:01 AM) uhh, where did you hear this? Im pretty sure Pence was never in the discussion.. it was Tavares, Hirsh, Buchholz for Garland all along from everything that I heard on it http://www.southsidesox.com/story/2006/12/28/135916/08

QUOTE(Friend of Nordhagen @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 06:27 AM) You don't try to trade one of them to the Astros [...] Interesting that you brought this up. I don't mean to completely derail the thread, but the reason the trade didn't go through was because Williams asked for Hunter Pence in addition to Hirsch, Buckholz and Tavares. Too bad Purpura didn't give in -- that deal would have been quite the coup. The Sox would have had a nice grindy platoon in TavErstad in CF with Pence manning LF. Losing Garland would have sucked, but gaining Pence/Hirsch would have more than made up for it.

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 05:14 AM) He just isn't going to hit major league pitching. Nice to see you know this based on Fields' 40 major league at-bats. Hy-per-bole. I see you've become quite the fan of it. The system is below average. It's not the worst in baseball. The Sox have averaged 87 wins since 2001. Of the GMs in baseball who qualify, I'd guess that number ranks in the top third. I also view his early years differently -- he wasn't very good in his early years but seemingly got better and better. The Sox organization six years ago had absolutely NO pitching. That's a lie -- they had Buehrle and Garland. That's about it. The pitching 'talent' that was in the minors all flamed out. Thanks for that. Tell me, why aren't you working for Baseball America again? Oh, and you're really a friend of that hyperbole that I mentioned. Williams has taken this team from a mid-market team to being in that second tier of large market teams. He's added a bunch of good arms to the team. He's put the Sox in a position to where they won't have to spend $40 million dollars for a starting pitcher this winter, regardless of whether or not they resign Buehrle. The lack of position players in the organization and the lack of depth is completely on his shoulders -- I agree with that 100%. That being said... -It's easier and safer to buy position players on the market. -He's addressed the situation by retooling the 'scouting system' (for lack of a better term) -- successful or not, it's good to see he's recognized that a problem is there. Now, I understand it needs to pay dividends -- there's no doubting that -- but I want to see where it goes. Basically, I don't think Kenny has done enough wrong to get fired.

Damn you Kenny Williams for not getting Lastings Milledge and Mike Pelfrey for broken down Freddy!!!!! //shakes angry fist

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 04:12 AM) Our organization is, AT BEST, in an equal position now as it was when he took over. IMO it's worse off than it was then, and that was 6 years ago. The organization is WORSE OFF than it was six years ago? You're kidding, right? Please, show me how the Sox organization is worse off now than it was six years ago... This should be classic. If it was a true statement, you might have a point.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 03:38 AM) You may have missed my many offseason posts about picking up Josh Hamilton and Hideki Okajima, along with my prescient posts concerning how we should pick up Ramon Ortiz and Jack Cust and release them after a few weeks or a month. I also said something about trading for Jeremy Guthrie -- once he starts to suck I'll let you know when I said we should release him. Need some time to look for those... Heh, I can't tell if you're being 100% serious in part of your post. There's things that Williams could have done to make this team better -- that's for sure -- but competing with Cleveland or Detroit? Not when four of your top five hitters aren't even league average right now.
-
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 03:32 AM) It doesn't exist, which is the whole problem in the first place. No matter what we did this offseason, we were a 3rd place team, which goes back to poor drafting, poor depth, and poor general talent in the organization. KW has been our GM since 2001, so that all goes on his desk. I can't disagree with this. Then again, you really want Williams canned over that? It's a problem, no doubt, but I don't think he should be fired over that. His real problem has been developing any real position players. It's something that needs to be fixed. I'm still not calling for him to be fired, though. From 2001-2007, he's improved greatly as a GM, and sure, he still has his problems, but not enough for him to be fired. The next five months are big, though -- he's got to do well with the Buehrle, Dye, Iguchi and to a lesser extent Crede situations.
-
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 03:14 AM) You really explained, in 1 paragraph, why this team is where it is. He did? He explained why Paul Konerko, Jermaine Dye and AJ Pierzynski have collectively hit for an OPS+ of about 85? Please -- somebody outline a reasonable offseason scenario that would have us -- RIGHT NOW -- competing with Detroit and Cleveland. I still haven't seen one yet... nor the posts from the winter calling for Crede to be traded.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 01:50 AM) 5 hits, no runs against a team that gave up 17 runs yesterday including 11 runs by the pen. Thome out of the lineup, Pods, Erstad and Crede all injured. Perfect storm. What else can you do but tip your cap to the guy with the 6.00 ERA, Adam Eaton. Boy, don't look at the stat sheet, he's going to be a 25 game winner this year.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 10:14 PM) If he's talking about the cold weather there, then we can probably forget about going after him this offseason. Yeah I definitely think you're reading that wrong, greasy's right -- I'd think he's just talking about the crappiness that is Cleveland, not the cold. Ichiro is without a doubt the best 'quote' in baseball. He's given some other gems, too. First (from WithLeather)... Next (this one's hilarious -- from Deadspin)...

QUOTE(dasox24 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 04:28 AM) Well, I stand corrected at least on the performance issue. I have a friend who is a Braves fan and never liked Betemit, so I kinda just assumed his stats sucked. My bad. I normally don't make mistakes like that. However, according to ESPN, he'll be 27 in July. Are they wrong? Baseball-reference has him turning 26 in November.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 02:52 AM) Billingsley is a starter in my book. He still needs to learn how to trust his stuff and get batters out earlier in the count (doing this will allow him to go deeper into games as a starter). He also has a plethora of quality pitches and wite you are right, worse case he turns into a reliever, but he definitely has the stuff to be a mid to front of the rotation guy). I don't know if you can give me an answer to this, but why did they relegate Billingsly to the bullpen this season? Is that just a temporary plan with him?
-
QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 02:30 AM) betemit came up with atlanta as a SS so he can probably play 2b...i like him too but im not sure any of this is really worth it because i doubt LA is really willing to give him up....especially paired with their best young pitcher for a guy who is hitting under .230, is a FA next year, has a history of injuries and is turning 34 this offseason No doubt LA would have to (most likely) get something else in return. Fathom brought up MacDougal, he could make sense as a replacement for Billingsly in the bullpen. Honestly, I'm not sure just how much Colletti thinks about Billingsly -- Brett Tomko and Mark Hendrickson both got the nod in the rotation over him this year for reasons I'm not totally sure of, as Billingsly had a very good rookie half-season last year (3.80 ERA in 90 innings). Combine that with the fact that Colletti has had no problem going with 'proven veterans' over rookies, and I don't see this as a farfetched proposal at all.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...ox&did=milb Two straight very good starts from Gavin Floyd, as today he goes seven innings, allowing two runs (just one earned) on five hits and three walks. He struck out eight. Sweeney had a two hit day at the plate and Craig Wilson continues to fall. Damn has he fallen from 'grace' -- just a year ago he was having a pretty okay year with Pittsburg but since he's gone to New York it has not been pretty.
