QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 03:32 AM) You have a potentially special year coming your way next season, my friend. I'm not buying it yet. Crean's won zero tourney games without Wade. I've only really followed MU basketball with a close eye for one year, but I wasn't particularly fond of Crean's in-game coaching skills. I'm not sure how much of the Marquette/Mich St game you saw last year -- obviously you had your own team to worry about -- but that was one of the most embarrassing offensive performances I've ever seen. I understand McNeal was out, but there was no creativity on Crean's part. That being said... my fingers are firmly crossed about next season. I still think Georgetown and Louisville are the best teams in the BE, but we're close.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 09:05 PM) Not official yet but there's a good possibility that we're going to get a College Gameday in Carbondale this upcoming college basketball season. That'd be f***in awesome. Been there, done that. Didn't know where to put this, but Dominic James is coming back to Marquette. Crean's offense doesn't exactly fit the style of players he has, but man -- James better come next year with a chip on his shoulder after the poor showing at the camps (and for a better portion of last season). I really wish he'd become more of a playmaker rather than trying to be the primary scorer, but again -- Crean's offense is teh garb.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 11:58 PM) All you can hope for at this juncture in the season is for Buehrle to continue pitching well and Dye to immediately heat up. Williams, without question, needs a stellar package for atleast one player to suppliment the farm system with high-upside prospects. And for anyone who is ready to provide excuses for anything less than an immediate "win" for the White Sox, I'm not willing to accept it. Neither should anyone else. Our future depends upon it. This was actually a pretty perfect weekend, trade and future wise, for the Sox. Fields was awesome at the plate, Dye is heating up a bit and Buehrle continues to pitch very well. And yeah, I don't really get pissed anymore -- I root hard every time Fields is at the plate to get a hit, and every time Boone Logan pitches, but other than that... It's very different, that's for sure.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 11:48 PM) I've considered that I don't know what I'm talking about. And when I'm wrong, I admit I was wrong. Have you ever considered that you don't know what you're talking about, with whatever? It came off as sounding as you saying Jason doesn't know what he's talking about. That's all I was responding to. Of course I've been wrong and will continue to be wrong on certain things. ESPN commentators? You can't be serious? Yeah, that's why I like those Met prospects -- because ESPN has hyped them. No other reasons, really...
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 10:09 PM) So you are making judgements on them from others that would overhype them? You never actually see them except when they play ML ball and so far they have both sucked in that situation. So the only things that make you respect them so much is the fact that some people may be overhyping them. WTF are you talking about. Overhype them? Can you find me the specific person who is overhyping Milledge, Pelfrey, so I can agree with or refute what he (or you) are saying? I honestly don't even know what you're getting at anymore... Oh, and by the way, I've just been in the corner crying for the past half hour, just so you know -- you've totally destroyed me, so much so that I don't know if I can consider myself a man anymore. Jason, I tend to think people are overstating the Mets' pitching problems. Buehrle would be an upgrade for sure, I'm not doubting that. But at what price? Oliver Perez and John Maine are a very good one-two punch. El Duque has been awesome in his time with the Mets and comes with that 'clutch playoff performer' tag. And they also get Pedro back in a month or so. If the Mets made that trade -- Martinez, Milledge and Pelfrey -- they are gutting their farm system when they really don't need to. I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- the Sox will be lucky to get two of those. If Minaya even thought about offering Milledge and Pelfrey, Kenny should take that and run. That would be huge -- it would give the Sox sooo much financial flexibility (especially if you could work out a Contreras deal in the winter), not to mention the amazing talent the Sox would be getting back. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 11:40 PM) You ever consider that maybe you don't know what you're talking about? Haha. I'll bite my tongue and just laugh.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 07:34 PM) During their miniscule MLB careers they have sucked. Fixed. And yeah, I can't really dispute that. Let's just hope our GM doesn't make the same judgements based off of tiny sample sizes that you seem to be making. And I think those expectations are well out of whack. Again -- it's three months for Buehrle -- not three months plus the extension -- for a combined 18 years of those top prospects. If Minaya liked Buehrle enough, he could throw gobs of money at him this winter. I didn't respond to it because I didn't feel I needed to. I don't really give a damn about hype. I judge each prospect on their own merits, and I read and hear what other people think about these guys. I make my own judgements about whose opinion I'm going to 'respect' (for lack of a better term) -- for example, I'm not going to believe and listen to Steve Phillips if he tells me Lastings Milledge is going to be the best player to ever step on a baseball field. I like Milledge because he's a guy that both scouts and 'stat' guys like for his combination of tools and performance. I like Pelfrey because, well, it's hard not to like one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. Ditto Martinez. And since we seem to be getting into semantics here, here's what I initially said: I take 'bet' to mean if I offer $500 and, if the Sox don't get that package of players back, I'm getting $500 players back. But I understand that with me using the word "offer" in the next sentence, it's going to mean me just giving up $500 dollars. If it means me taking a hit to my manhood, though, for not giving up $500 dollars on something that I'm thinking one way and you're thinking another, then -- damnit -- I just don't know how I'm going to live the rest of my live. Might as well just pack it in, really...

Josh Fields has some very 'odd' power. Take that ball he just hit down the RF line in the Pittsburg game -- I thought that was just a little looper that was going to drop in front of their RFer. It ended up landing all the way by the warning track. His pop-ups just tend to go a long way. I imagine that's a testament to how strong he is. Whatever it is, he's had a great series in Pitt -- very encouraging after his slow start.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 05:17 AM) So? Again, so? You're making a judgement based on about a quarter's worth of a season for both guys. If you want to do that, that's your perogative -- I think it's quite stupid, though. Well, at least this let's me know who I'm dealing with. To you it is. I'll admit that you did catch me with my hand in the cookie jar here. I'm not staking $500 just for s***s and giggles. I understand I made the offer here, so it's on me, but if you're so confident the Sox are going to get a package of two top 25 prospects (okay -- so Martinez is at 27) in all of baseball and another top 100-125 prospect (Milledge) for Buehrle, I don't see why you wouldn't want to put your money where your mouth is -- obviously not the afformentioned $500, but...
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 04:43 AM) Milledge has been in the majors and did nothing. As a 21 year old. In 166 at-bats. But keep going... As a 23 year old. In 53 innings pitched. You're on a roll! Yes -- that's what a prospect is. And if you evaluate them properly, more times than not, if they succeed in the minors, they're going to succeed in the majors. It's obviously not as simple as that, but Martinez is 18 years old (!) and already in AA. Not true. Jose Valentin and Damion Easley are currently forming a nice little platoon, putting up an OPS+ of around 110. And hell, Ruben Gotay has a 121 OPS+ in 44 at-bats -- Ruben f***ing Gotay! It seems whatever they put at second turns to gold. But anyways, the Valentin/Easley platoon figures to be better than Iguchi the rest of the way. Valentin is certainly much better defensively than Iguchi and the last two seasons, he's been much better offensively. Who's saying give him away? First off, I think the Sox should be doing everything they can to get Buehrle inked to a contract and, by April 2008, trade Contreras. But if they can't do that, they're going to lose him for two top 50 draft picks. If the Mets offered Milledge and that Guerra kid -- and the Sox were SURE that they couldn't resign Buehrle -- I'd take that deal, as those two are likely to be better than what you're going to get with the two draft picks. You're arguing for the sake of arguing. I'd bet everything I own that the Sox don't get anything close to a package of Martinez, Pelfrey and Milledge. If I knew you personally I'd walk to your house and offer you $500 that the Sox don't get anything close to your fantasy package. Keep dreaming.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 12:06 AM) Yea maybe, but Mark Buehrle could be the final piece to a World Title...if they think a rotation of Buehrle, Glavine, Maine, Perez and maybe even Pedro (with El Duque in there) can win it all they may deal a kings ransom to get Buehrle. Milledge, Pelfrey and Martinez is more than a king's ransom. You're talking about two starting outfielders and a middle of the rotation starting pitcher. And six, cheap years of each of those players -- again, for three months of Mark Buehrle. Minaya has no reason to give up those three. His starting rotation is putting up an ERA+ of about 130 right now. They get Pedro back in a month or so and have Pelfrey waiting in the wings. People might say they lack a top of the rotation starter, but Ollie Perez has pitched like he did in 2004, and John Maine has also been spectacular and has above average stuff to boot. With that offense, that's more than good enough. If Minaya likes Buehrle that much, he'll give him 5/$90 in the winter and give up his first rounder in 2008. We're not coming CLOSE to getting a package of Milledge, Pelfrey and Martinez. If you're expecting that, prepare to call for Kenny Williams' head after the move is made.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 16, 2007 -> 09:42 PM) Get Milledge, Pelfrey, and Martinez and the deal is done - pretty simple actually. Haha -- yep, the Mets are going to give this up for a little more than three months of Mark Buehrle. We'll be lucky to get two of those.

Aaron Cunningham Traded to Zona for IF Danny Richar
CWSGuy406 replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 16, 2007 -> 08:51 PM) Hell the guy already has 32 extra base hits this year, which is pretty damn impressive (albeit he's doing it in a hitters league). That's my concern -- that his good slugging percentage (.479) is PCL inflated. Here's a profile I found on Richar, although it was written a year-and-a-half ago... http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=251&p=2&c=494556 -

QUOTE(SoxAce @ Jun 16, 2007 -> 08:38 PM) It looks like this kid has serious potential at least. Meh -- he's a 24 year old with an .827 OPS in the PCL. Looks like he might be a pretty good backup, and at the very worst, he does bat left-handed so I imagine he and Gonzalez could make a pretty good (~.270/.340/.420) platoon. -
Awesome. That clears up some much needed room on the blueline. As of right now, I'd say the locks back there are Keith, Seabrook and Barker. Vandermeer and Aucoin will be on the team (for better or for worse) if they aren't dealt, leaving the last spot for Johansson or Wisniewski. I imagine they'll carry seven defenders, for a couple of reasons -- first, Wisniewski played a little forward last year, IIRC, so if they really want him on the ice, they can carry seven defenders a night and play him at forward for a few shifts. Also, Savard didn't seem hesitant to bench Aucoin, so if he continues to be inneffective, he'll make friends with the press box. My hope is that a move like this might help convince Handzus to remain a Hawk. A motivated Samsonov is a decent second line player (as he was in 2005-2006 with 53 points). I could live with an offseason that just consists of resigning Zues and drafting whoever (Kane, Turris, JVR). If the Hawks do draft Kane, though, I really hope they think about keeping Koci as a 13th guy on the roster. The Hawks are going to need somebody to protect the youngins a bit, and Vandermeer only dropped the gloves twice last season (didn't drop 'em once in the calender year of 2007). This draft needs to come here SOON. I want something to talk about other than Chicago's crappy team on the southside.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 15, 2007 -> 04:05 PM) I used to defend this team when people said, "Oh, the players don't care," blah blah, but not anymore, because Ozzie's saying it in the media (see his recent Walker comments), it's become obvious from looking at them and I was told a little more about it recently by a few good sources. I don't think it has anything to due with "caring". Maybe a little bit, I guess, but this is just a mediocre team. We're starting bench players at two outfield spots, not to mention a SS who is hitting around .200. As of yesterday our bullpen contained to AAA pitchers in Prinz and Bukvich. Combine all that with the fact that the "big boppers" on offense are all (except Thome) having 10th percentile type years, and vwala!

Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes
CWSGuy406 replied to Kalapse's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 09:15 PM) Whatever. That Borch jersey has done a lot for you. The Borchard jersey has actually been misplaced -- I don't know where it is at the moment. Coincidentally, I don't think I've worn it all year and, what'd'ya know, the Sox are in a free fall. Coincidence? I think not. -
We can probably unpin this now, right? Although we'll have to make another thread for the draft and for when Tallon pulls another Havlat for mediocre-ness out of his ass this summer. The Hawks have it narrowed down to three guys -- JVR, Patrick Kane and Kyle Turris. Turris and JVR are both going to college (Wisconsin and New Hampshiere, I want to say), but Kane, despite his size, will probably play in the NHL next year. Personally speaking I want Patrick Kane. Maybe it's a little selfish, but I'd love to see Kane and Toews both on the ice next season, that'd be amazing. Then again, I won't be mad if they go with Turris or JVR -- I have total trust in Tallon.

Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes
CWSGuy406 replied to Kalapse's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 06:34 PM) El Duque provides the coolest line in the history of the world in that postseason; actually, Game 3 of the World Series. 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 2 K He was so dominant in Game 3 of the 'DS. Even the inning after he got out of the bases loaded jam, he was awesome -- I think he struck Ortiz out on three pitches. If I get a new jersey, it's probably him -- I don't want to ruin the career of yet another young player because his name is on my back. -
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 11:23 PM) So if people are giving KW so much credit for Garcia getting hurt (and really, it's never great when the highlight of your trade is that the player you gave up is hurting,) how come more people aren't bashing for NOT trading Crede? The Sox knew Crede was ailing. His value was actually somewhat high, and there was a demand for him. I'd say they're two different situations. With Garcia, the Sox had six starting pitchers and -- at the time -- McCarthy had to be in a starting rotation in 2007. I don't think anyone doubted that. Can you say the same about Fields? I guess you could make the argument either way. Personally, I'd say he wasn't ready and probably would have only sucked slightly less than Crede did in the first two months. Heck, I still don't know whether Fields is ready -- I guess we will see that in the coming months. Kenny Williams took a risk on Crede that his back would be okay with proper rehab. It was a shaky situation, for sure, but I think it's a gamble that you could make an argument for. Turns out Kenny lost the gamble and, unfortunately for us, the Sox are left with a big mess -- does Crede even get tendered a contract next season? Do you trade him coming off of surgery, when his value is (most likely) very low? Or do you take another risk, hope he's even healthier after the surgery and stick him at third, hoping he can repeat 2006? And as far as this: I don't think that's the highlight of the trade. I think this is, and always has been, the highlight of the trade.

Boone Logan f***ing rocks. One inning, three Ks today against the heart of the Philly order. Made Victorino, Utley and Howard look silly. Take that you h8erz from last season!!!!
-
The key with Ichiro would be keeping him in CF. IIRC, most metrics have rated him as a very good defender out there. His bat might not be all that special for a RFer, but for a CFer, it's well above average. Kalapse's scenario would be ideal for me, at least the resigning Buehrle, trading Contreras and inking Ichiro part of it. I'm not a huge fan of that Terrero - Ichiro - Sweeney outfield, though. Then again, I don't know that I have a better idea. Just looking at this, if the Sox don't land Ichiro this winter, the Sox might have the WORST offensive OF in all of baseball next season. And damn does that Billingsly + Betemit for Dye + MacDougal trade seem to make sooo much sense. It would also allow the Sox to trade Iguchi -- perhaps Cleveland or the Mets would give up a B- prospect for half a season of Iguchi.

QUOTE(JackTalkThai @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 04:10 AM) ESPN seems to disagree...but what do they know. http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/bestgames Detroit Tigers Pitchers IP H R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA J Verlander (W, 7-2) 9.0 0 0 0 4 12 0 112-73 2.79 Totals 9.0 0 0 0 4 12 0 112-73 PITCHING Batters faced: J Verlander 30 Ground Balls-Fly Balls: J Verlander 11-4 Game Scores: J Verlander 95 I don't know how to quite put this, but Verlander's sequence to Graffanino in the ninth is probably one of the filthiest set of pitches I've seen in my lifetime. Verlander buries two sliders in a row on the outside corner and then buries one low and a way that Graffanino hacks at and misses. Graff never had a chance. Quite the talent you have there -- Sox fans are jealous of all the talent that Detroit possesses. I said this in the gamethread and I'll say it here -- Detroit deserves every ounce of the success they're having right now. They've quickly transformed themselves into one of the best run organizations in all of baseball. Kudos, and I know it's a long way away, but hopefully they can finish the job this time in the playoffs and get that ring.
