  1. Behind The Scenes: Newsweek On McCain In The Dark, Obama Threats, And More -- McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended. Palin asked to speak along with McCain at his Arizona concession speech but campaign strategist Steve Schmidt vetoed the request. -- The Obama campaign was provided with reports from the Secret Service showing a sharp and very disturbing increase in threats to Obama in September and early October, at the same time that the crowds at Palin rallies became more frenzied. Michelle Obama was shaken by the vituperative crowds and the hot rhetoric from the GOP candidates. "Why would they try to make people hate us?" Michelle Obama said to a top campaign aide. -- On the Sunday night before the last debate, McCain's core group of advisers--Steve Schmidt, Rick Davis, adman Fred Davis, strategist Greg Strimple, pollster Bill McInturff and strategy director Sarah Simmons -- met to decide whether or not to tell McCain that the race was effectively over, that he no longer had a chance to win. The consensus in the room was no, not yet, not while he still had "a pulse." -- The Obama campaign's "New Media" experts created a computer program that would allow a "flusher"--the term for a volunteer who rounds up nonvoters on Election Day--to know exactly who had, and had not, voted in real time. They dubbed it Project Houdini, because of the way names disappear off the list instantly once people are identified as they wait in line at their local polling station. -- Palin launched her attack on Obama's association with William Ayers, the former Weather Underground bomber, before the campaign had finalized a plan to raise the issue. McCain's advisers were working on a strategy that they hoped to unveil the following week, but McCain had not signed off on it, and top adviser Mark Salter was resisting. -- McCain also was reluctant to use Obama's incendiary pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright as a campaign issue. He had set firm boundaries: no Jeremiah Wright; no attacking Michelle Obama; no attacking Obama for not serving in the military. McCain balked at an ad using images of children that suggested that Obama might not protect them from terrorism; Schmidt vetoed ads suggesting that Obama was soft on crime (no Willie Hortons); and before word even got to McCain, Schmidt and Salter scuttled a "celebrity" ad of Obama dancing with talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres (the sight of a black man dancing with a lesbian was deemed too provocative). -- Obama was never inclined to choose Sen. Hillary Clinton as his running mate, not so much because she had been his sometime bitter rival on the campaign trail, but because of her husband. Still, as Hillary's name came up in veep discussions, and Obama's advisers gave all the reasons why she should be kept off the ticket, Obama would stop and ask, "Are we sure?" He needed to be convinced one more time that the Clintons would do more harm than good. McCain, on the other hand, was relieved to face Biden as the veep choice, and not Hillary Clinton, whom the McCain camp had truly feared. -- McCain was dumbfounded when Congressman John Lewis, a civil-rights hero, issued a press release comparing McCain with former Alabama Gov. George Wallace, a segregationist infamous for stirring racial fears. McCain had devoted a chapter to Lewis in one of his books, "Why Courage Matters" and had so admired Lewis that he had once taken his children to meet him. -- The debates unnerved both candidates. When he was preparing for the Democratic primary debates, Obama was recorded saying, "I don't consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, 'You know, this is a stupid question, but let me ... answer it.' So when Brian Williams is asking me about what's a personal thing that you've done [that's green], and I say, you know, 'Well, I planted a bunch of trees.' And he says, 'I'm talking about personal.' What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I f---ing changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective'."
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:22 AM) JFK wanted a man on the moon in 10 years and we accomplished it. I think we have the brains to get this accomplished as well. I think the debate... in my opinion... is getting it down at all costs vs getting done cost efficiently. What I mean by this is maybe int he next ten years we CAN get off foreign oil, but will the end product be more expensive than the current product? I'd be more interest in taking 15 years and getting right than 10 years and have high consumer costs. An example of something like this is solar energy. It's just too expensive for the average citizen. When I buy a house in the next 3 years, I REALLY want to install solar... but it might be too expensive... yes, there are leasing models that are cost efficient. The first push might be in pushing down the costs of solar to make it accessible to "Joe the Plummer". (Sorry, had to got there one last time. lol)
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:20 AM) As the resident vegan of Soxtalk I am ecstatic to see Prop 2 pass in California (Voters in California approved an historic ballot measure to halt the inhumane confinement of animals on factory farms by an overwhelming margin) and Question 3 pass in Massachusetts (banning Greyhound racing). hmmm... i didnt know about those. great to hear.
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:16 AM) Jesse Jr said last night he would not leave his current position. and Obama said he wouldnt run for president. Things change.
  5. FWIW: Rahm Emanuel has been offered the Chief of Staff position
  6. FYI: I think it was Chris Matthews on MSNBC last night who said he's talked with senior Obama staffers who have said Obama's inner circle / cabinet will be 3 things: Bi-partisan Diverse No Retreads / Youth Basically, they want a bi-partisan group of diverse individuals who havent been around the White House too much before.
  7. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:04 AM) On a local news station last night, Blago at least stated he would not be filling the seat. I think it's been implied that Blogo would let Obama name his own replacement.
  8. I had a feeling that once McCain lost, the leaks would start flowing into streams and rivers: Paper claims McCain has been making fun of Palin in private
  9. QUOTE (daa84 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:00 AM) I trust Blagojevich about as much as I trust Rex Grossman against the Titans this week....
  10. This is how the country really voted:
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:42 AM) Actually I read that turnout was greater than in 04 by % Via MSNBC:
  12. So, Obama is the next president... what REALLY gets done. Not what he wants to get done, what actually gets done. I think in no particular order: Net Neutrality Troops out of Iraq Next Generation Energy Movement Some form of health care reform... maybe not universal right away.
  13. I would have said a Latino in the form of Bill Richardson, but he'll be 68 in 2016. I'm not sure he'd run.
  14. are people from Montana considered a minority?
  15. MSNBC and CNN still havent called Missouri or North Carolina. McCain leads in Missouri and Obama in North Carolina. UPDATE: MSNBC called MO for McCain.
  16. Stevens gets reelected. Wow. Alaskans really are dopes.
  17. MSNBC: Obama takes NV. Obama very close to taking Indiana in my opinion.
  18. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 10:25 PM) You mean Senate. oops. yea
  19. what the hell is going outside the White House?
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 10:22 PM) That said...if I may...I won't forgive him for his campaign. Napolitano for Congress in 2010
