2008 General Election Discussion Thread

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) The problem with that strategy though is that it can easily backfire. George W. Bush, on Rove's advice, spent the last couple days of the 2000 campaign in California, trying to give the impression that they were so confident they'd win that they could contest there. Had his brother not been the governor of Florida, spending his time there instead of doing one or two more stops in Florida might well have cost him the election. It's a difficult balancing act. I dunno. Obama SCHOOLED Hillary Clinton on how to run a primary. If he surrounds himself with the right people for the general, he might be hard to beat. -
QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:41 PM) So does this mean Uribe will be released? Beckahm now > Uribe now
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:44 PM) By the way, I do not see Beckham playing at any spot but 2B or the OF. He doesn't have the range nor the arm, IMO, to stick at SS. From what I have read, he is a serviceable SS, but nothing special.
-
assuming he progresses, what is his time line to the big leagues? 2010? 2011?
-
It's 3 minutes long and the hit doesn't come until the very end, but I LOVE his swing.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) 3B Fields - SS Ramirez - 2B Beckham - 1B Swisher I approve. ugh. Not keen on that last point. But whatever. lol
-
I like the pick. There is no such thing as a "sure thing", so you never know. but i really like his potential. He apparently has a very good bat with surprising pop. With a little muscle he could be pretty darn good. Some project he MIGHT be moved to 2B. But, He'll be given a shot at SS first.

The Broader General Election: Obama to contest McCain in hardcore red states. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 10:19 AM) I thought it meant death to America in the name of Allah? Only if you are in WV and Kentucky And it's not green because unfortunately some actually DO believe that.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 09:39 AM) I don't see McCain's age as an issue. It's really not. Unless he has chronic "senior moments" over the next few months, it's nto an issue. I am More worried about his anger.
-
FYI: McCain said in his speech "I know I have a few more years than Sen. Obama" or something like that. Open season on his age has begun!

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 09:10 AM) The huge money advantage: I thought i heard someone say that Obama plans to run a NATIONAL campaign. Not just a 5 state plan. If that is true, Obam can virtually bankrupt McCain like he did to Clinton.

I took a look at google earth again. If Joe's was 504 and landed in the Right Center Field concourse, then Thomes was probably pretty close to 500+.
-
QUOTE (WSoxMatt @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 09:28 PM) What was Borchards vs Philly, 504?? yes http://www.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...sp&c_id=cws

QUOTE (lukeman89 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 09:25 PM) i dont think people really realize how far 500 feet is. THat is why the supposed 600+ ft bombs by Mantle are so amazing. I still have a REAL hard time believing someone can hit a ball 550+ ft.

QUOTE (soxfan3530 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 09:18 PM) wow dumb play by BA. with our offense though cant say that i blame him. I wont fault him. He busted his butt out of the box. I coach third base for my softball team. I have a philosophy that if a player is fast enough to make it home and a perfect play would be needed to get him out, I'll send him. They needed a perfect play to nail BA at third. I give props for the effort.

I used Google Earth's tape measure tool. If it cleared the part deck, it's 481. If it landed in front of the part deck, it is 440. Obviously this is 2D. So, hight might have made it longer. But you get the general idea. Note: 480 down the lines hits a scoreboard.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 09:13 PM) On the Obama/Clinton VP slot, as some have thought, Bill Clinton might be the dealbreaker, because the Clintons would be required by the Obama campaign to open up and disclose everything. Where all their income came from, their full tax returns, the full donor roster of all Clinton's charity work and the Clinton Library, etc. That is a REALLY smart angle by the Obama camp. Obama doesn't want her to be VP and they know the Clintons wont be open with the donors because there are some not so pleasant connections there... so, therefor, make that a condition. -

Apparently many of her "super" supporters are pissed about how she handled last night.
