Do I take a dump or watch Adam's at bat? -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 2, 2011 -> 10:56 AM) Problem for the Pirates is...by the time those 2-3 year away guys arrive, guys like McCutcheon and Alvarez are going to be in their arbitration years, and they're going to be looking to trade them before they get expensive. Fair point. But the Pirates have spent almost $31 million on draft bonuses the last three years, tops in baseball. You don't spend that kinda coin for nothing. And they haven't had players of McCutchen's and Alvarez's talent/potential in quite some time. So I think they'll be a lot more inclined to hang on to them, as opposed to average players like Jason Bay and Nate McClouth, once it's time to pay them.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 2, 2011 -> 12:41 AM) Before we go to banishing Ohman to the deepest bowels of hell, consider some perspective here. It's the first game out of Spring Training, so these guys aren't in perfect shape yet. The Sox were up like 14-4 when he came in the game, so he had a little wiggle room. The Indians were a bit pissed that they were getting schooled as badly as they were and still had that Opening Day adrenaline flowing. Oh, and the main point I was trying to get at - Matt Thornton's second career game in a White Sox uniform - 2.2 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 4 BB, 2 K. There's obviously more of a track record on Will Ohman, but give him more than 1 game to dig his own grave. Make it 3 or 4 atleast, please. Nope. I saw this dude with the Cubs. He's human diesel fuel. Now if you keep him away from all things right-handed and put him in low-leverage situations you might have a chance. Otherwise, it's bombs away.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 2, 2011 -> 12:36 AM) FYI, my predictions for the year were that Brandon Belt would be the NL ROY, and that JP Arencibia was my sleeper pick in my draft. So far, so smart. I'm tryin' to bang this HOT ass Indian chick that's playing super hard to get. What are my chances? I mean I want like a percentage.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 11:34 PM) Opening Day win is Opening Day win. I'll take it. But to have a 14-0 lead turn into a 15-10 final? My god. I'm in chicago this week and from talking to people, I think Oz is at the stage his team has to produce big time first half of the year or he's gone. I still love him regardless, but I'm sensing many think he is a problem. Ohman? Who decided to sign that guy? Wow. He wasn't extended through next year to get fired if the team underachieves for a few months. Ozzie will have to quit before his contract runs out for him not to be here.

OK, if Brandon Belt is as good as it seems the Giants, not the Phillies, are by far the team to beat in the NL.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 09:51 PM) I posted this in the chat, but Beckham didn't have his first 3 hit game until July 11th last year. And Alexei didn't look absolutely terrible. To me, those are the biggest pluses so far. Quentin looking good was nice too I suppose. Oh, and the pitching doesn't concern me at all. They were throwing batting practice to try and get the game over with. With a 14 run lead, there's no point in dicking around, trying to make the perfect pitch. Just need to make sure that when it's a 1 run lead, they are ready. Will Ohman: Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

Thank Cargo we don't have the silly off day inbetween the first and second game of the year. I f***ing HATE that s***. -
QUOTE (since56 @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) Better get used to bashing our way to victory. Could be a very fun year. Lots of high scoring games for the opponents too! I agree in the games that Humber pitches. I'm optimistic the top 4 (though Jackson scares the s*** out of me), will keep us in most games. Today was, IMO, an outlier. At least from the pitching side. I expect the offense to be potent all year long.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 08:19 PM) It is only one game, but that contract is not going to be a bargain. Pavano is the blueprint for not giving some multiyear contracts. He seems like an obvious poster boy for bust of the year. For a team that's won 6 division titles in 9 years, they've made some rather boneheaded moves in regards to the major league team.

QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 01:10 PM) Anyone else looking forward to getting a glimpse of the Pirates against the Cubs? I'm not a fan of the Bucs overall philosophy, but I feel like guys like McCutchen, Alvarez and Doumit can be Major League stars if they were on a better team. If they had any starting pitching worth talking about, they could fight to go .500 and mess up that division race like Cleveland does in the AL Central every year. As a 3-year Baseball America subscriber, I'm a fan of any and all premium young talent. I don't care what team they play for. I'd argue McCutchen is already a star and Alvarez isn't far behind. The better these guys get, of course, the better the Pirates will eventually (finally) get. I like Tabata and Walker as well (and, yes, Ace, Jones still sucks). They're going to take either Anthony Rendon or Gerrit Cole with the #1 pick this year. And they've got premium arms in Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie, though each is 2-3 years away.

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 07:49 PM) Pavano looks terrible. Doesn't mean much though. Make that 10-0 Jays. Forgetting about the Twins for a second, this Blue Jays team has quite a bit of potential. If Hill/Lind can bounce back, that's a stellar offense. Big J.P. Arencibia fan. He could be what Posey was last year, I believe. The catcher position has seen a rather large exponential rise in talent the last few years.

QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 06:40 PM) Pena put two runners on, but Sale came in and allowed them to score. Thanks to Lastings.

Rodman to make the HOF. http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/21276...To_Hall_Of_Fame Great news. I thought it was 50/50 at best. Nice to know that all the non-basketball crap can be put to the side. When this man stepped on the court, he got the s*** done.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) Soooo, I stepped out. What happened between the point that it was 14-0 and 15-10??? Bad defense, Will Ohman, bad bench play, Will Ohman, Carlos Santana, Tony Pena. Oh, and Will Ohman pitched. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 05:22 PM) I didn't watch the 4th, but damn, from the scoring updates I got on my phone, that must have been orgasmic. Dunn is going to have an '06 Thome like effect on this lineup. He really wears pitchers out. Even when he Ks. Oh, and this will sound suspect. But Dunn's got some rather thick thys

An extremely potent and efficient offensive attack. And then there was the rest of the game.
