  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 17, 2009 -> 08:31 AM) I agree fully. Peavy belongs on that list, but none of Buehrle, Floyd, or Danks is quite in that top aces argument. I will say that I'd rather have one ace (Peavy) and three above average starters (Buehrle, Danks, Floyd) over a dominant 1-2 anytime (unless that 1-2 is something freakish like '01 Johnson/Schilling).
  2. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 17, 2009 -> 01:03 AM) Man, ESPN hates the Sox. During the coverage they listed the 1-2 Punches in starting rotations for MLB staffs. Mariners: Felix Hernandez, Cliff Lee Red Sox: Josh Beckett, Jon Lester Yankees: CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett Giants: Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain Cardinals: Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright Phillies: Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels How is Peavy, Buehrle/Danks/Floyd not on there? It's better than the Yankees (Burnett not bing that great), Phillies (unless Hamels returns to form), the Red Sox (I'd take Peavy over Beckett, and Danks/Floyd at times are just as good as Lester). /southsidebias Also, the Phillies made out like bandits in this trade...just wow. And Wallace on the move again keeps reminding me of how loaded the top of the 2008 draft was: Slayer, Posey, Wallace, Alonso, Smoak... Well if it's 1-2 punches, I could see how the Sox would be left off. Let's face it. As much as we all adore Buehrle, he's not, nor has he ever been, elite. He's just very good. I'd take all those guys listed (aside from probably Hamels/Burnett) over Mark without hesitation. And Danks and Floyd aren't better than Burnett and Hamels, even with Hamels having an off year. Now if ESPN was doing top rotations overall and the White Sox were left off, then you would have a legitimate beef. And yes, the 2008 draft should go down as the best of the decade. And you didn't even mention Tim Beckham, Brian Matusz and, the guy who I believe will be the best player from this draft, Pedro Alvarez.
  3. If not for 2005, would Ozzie still be our manager?
  4. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 08:53 PM) According to Scott Merkin, as reported earlier, it seems like Ozzie talked KW out of adding a power bat and they will rotate the DH. I'm pretty sure KW is just waiting for this to blow up in Ozzie's face and then will add a DH midseason. So anyone with the know, who did they plan on adding? My guess would be Milton Bradley. I don't believe a word of this. Not saying you're making it up. But it doesn't make a shred of sense.
  5. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 06:59 PM) Tyler will get time in the minors, but if all goes well I could see him being up midyear. After all, if they bring back Thome we'll be pretty low on right-handed DH options. And TF's already 24. If AJP leaves next year then you're throwing this kid in cold next year with an experienced staff. While you want a young guy to play everyday in the minors... there's also some benefit with letting him sit behind AJP, get the occasional turn at DH. You get to build up the mystery some more with his minor league eye popping numbers. The worst thing that could happen to his trade value is you start him at AAA and he has a slump to start the year. If that happens, forget deadline deals for anything major. Andruw Jones; CQ and PK on occasion.
  6. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) Luis Terreros was 1.043.. I don't think he's gonna be starting DH anywhere. I'll assume this is true, you still have no point. What is Tyler supposed to do? Put up an OPS of 2.000 before you deem him ready for the majors?
  7. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 06:13 PM) He needs more time in the minors.. atleast a year. His numbers aren't that great offensively down there yet. They're not? A .993 OPS at Birmingham says otherwise.
  8. QUOTE (lakervin @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 05:56 PM) id rather have aj over victor, even though both are weak behind the plate Are you related to AJ? Martinez >> AJ without hesitation.
  9. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) Not as a 1 for 1 he wasn't.. Some people loved it, some didn't. I was one of the few who loved it. In fact.. throughout the thread page to page.. I was very enthusiastic about it.. I love old threads! There were actually more people in favor of the trade than I remembered. And of course you had the 'OMG! KENNY SHOULD BE FIRED! BAILEY SUCKS!' crowd. The writing was on the wall even then as far as Dye goes. He had been declining at the plate and especially in the field for a couple years. And he obviously hit rock bottom in '09. Having Bailey now would make it A LOT easier to part with Hudson. Oh, well.
  10. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 03:54 PM) I'll be damned.. Phils lose Drebek but gain Aumont. Wow. They did very well. Oakland got involved too?! How bout that. Mariners are very dangerous. Blue Jays did pretty well in the deal for the most part though I thought they would land one more good spect. The Blue Jays did fantastic, actually. Kyle Drabek was supposedly untouchable. That's as good a haul as one could expect for a guy they were guaranteed of losing at the end of the year. The Phillies were the NL favorites with Lee. They're the prohibitive favorites with Halladay. And I think the Mariners are the front-runners in the AL west. And I still think they add a big bat before it's all said and done. It's amazing how quickly Jack Zduriki, or however the hell you spell his last name, has turned that franchise around after the mess Bill Bavasi created. As terrible as the Bedard trade was, I still can't get over Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez.
  11. QUOTE (SmashROT @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 02:53 PM) Homer Bailey I was one of the few (I believe Soxfan1 was another) that was all for the Bailey/Dye swap last offseason. I've been in love with Homer for years. His last 10 starts or so this past season were superb. I think he's finally figured it out.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 03:46 PM) This is a very solid post, J4L, but the part you're missing is that if you acquire AGon and win with him, that opens up other doors for improvement, mainly by the influx of funds generated by postseason appearances, a potential WS title, and increased season-ticket holders. KHP has mentioned this part of the equation numerous times, so I don't want to make it seem as though I thought it all out. Obviously it is a risk, but the possibility does exist. I agree with most of this. I'll never believe that will ever get into a bidding war for elite free agents. Albert Belle was the last one almost 15 years ago. Like you said, it's a risk. I was just trying to expand on what fathom was saying. And personally, I think Tyler Flowers should be considered an untouchable. Not because I think he's THAT good. But AJ 's got one year left on his deal. And the days of Josh Paul, Mark Johnson, Jamie Burke and Sandy Alomar Jr. did serious psychological damage to me that I still have yet to recover from.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) I'd like the farm system to be strong too, but its plain old silly to not see that one of the reasons you want a strong farm, is for this sort of acquisition to be possible. I'll take two years of that guy over a handful of very good prospects almost any day, and I don't see any Sox propsects I wouldn't give up in the deal. Thing is it's not as black and white for a GM. GM's can't focus squarely on the current year or even the next year. They have to look to and plan ahead for 2012, 2013, ect, ect. The Peavy/Pena trades took a big chunk out of what was a very much improving system. You trade what's left for AGON, you could have potential problems down the road (or even for 2010). Especially considering our chances of signing him after '11 would be remote at best. Let's say you deal Flowers. Who's AJ's potential replacement? He's logged a ton of mileage over the years and he's no spring chicken. And he's obviously a FA after 2010. Let's say we deal Hudson. Who's our alternative if Freddy goes down? What if one of the big 4 goes down? We've got flat nothing left in the system starting pitching wise outside of Hudson. I think fathom's point was that there's a big difference between the Red Sox going balls out for AGON and the White Sox going balls out for AGON. I'm sure he couldn't care less about our minor league records. That's JPN and scenario's job.
  14. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 02:34 PM) Andy Gonzalez was really bad. I think he had a game with like 3 or 4 errors. It was really amazing, like in a bad way. I know we ended up getting Beckham, but I don't think I can ever go through another (without putting a bullet in my brain) '07ish season. And it wasn't just the record. But the everyday talent that was put out there was despicable.
  15. In no particular order: Mark Johnson, Rocky Biddle, Brian Anderson, Josh Paul, Todd Ritchie, Joe Borchard, Billy Koch, Felix Diaz, Andy Gonzalez, Toby Hall. I also have a new-found appreciation for AJ. We had some pretty horrific catchers before 2005. And I all of a sudden don't want to trade Tyler Flowers.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 07:52 PM) Hmmm, 92-96 ≠ 101-102. Maybe there's a reason why we're not there. Supposedly, Chapman was not going to 100% 'bring it' for that particular session.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 07:15 PM) I will say for a team that supposedly has no money, shelling out $82 million for Rios, Pierre and Teahan is curious at best. I'm pretty sure I'd trade those 3 for John Lackey. I wouldn't. I don't want Lackey for 5 years through age 36.
  18. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:34 PM) You're right, I shouldn't b**** about any of this. That's not what a message board is for. Thanks for letting me know. There's a difference between b****ing and being silly. But if it makes you feel better, have fun. Hope you accomplish something.
  19. QUOTE (Sox72 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:20 PM) I think Kenny is great. He does what he can with what he has. He is extremely creative and has shown that he is passionate about winning. While I would love to see some of the top free agents on our team at times, I also appreciate the fact that we aren't crippled by awful contracts that we're offered because we just had to beat out every other team for one guy because he was the best player available that year in free agency. Also, I like that he drafts the family members of people involved in the organization. LMAO. +1.
  20. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:19 PM) The Red Sox already offered $15M, and that was probably a 4-year MLB deal similar to the ones we gave Alexei and Dayan. If the Sox wanted Chapmann they'd probably have to offer at least $16 over 4, which would mean we wouldn't have been able to pay Juan Pierre. Clearly then, if the choice is Pierre vs. Chapmann, you go for the guy with the brownest underwear. KHP, you need to stop. I think you're a terrific (although your long-winded as hell sometimes) poster. But don't let emotions take over.
  21. QUOTE (Sox72 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:16 PM) It's possible they feel they've done all the scouting they need to on this guy, as he's beginning to price out of their range. Or maybe they just don't want any Hispanic players on the team. LMAO. This dude is awesome. Welcome to the board, Sox72. Post more, my friend.
  22. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:02 PM) I don't know, but he's been operating backwards. Normally the idea is to fill your biggest holes first and use whatever you have left to address other areas. Instead of going the big lefty bat > outfielder > lead-off hitter > reliever > bench direction he has gone in the bench > reliever > lead-off hitter/outfielder > big lefty bat direction. The names out there for the big lefty bat which we may possibly be able to afford are absolutely frightening. Look, I don't pretend that KW is the messiah. But after 9 years, if you really believe that he doesn't do whatever is in his power to make this team better, I don't know what to say. We all knew going in our options were limited.
  23. QUOTE (Sox72 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:12 PM) Yeah, sorry. I don't know the whole posting etiquette. Am I supposed to post in green? Or put one of those cute smiley faces? Don't even worry about it. I already like you. lol.
  24. QUOTE (Sox72 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:05 PM) I dont think the Rays would do that. They already have their closer in Soriano. Thank you for missing the point. Unless you, like me, were being sarcastic. In which case that was a good rebuttal. lol.
  25. QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:01 PM) called keep trying until they can bite on someone to do it. OK. Maybe we can give the Rays a buzz and propose a Teahen, Konerko, Jenks package for Longoria. I'm sure if we keep trying and trying and trying they'll bite.
