  1. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 01:20 AM) It makes me sad to recognize that I'm upset about Chris Getz going to KC for Teahen and damn near forgot that Fields went in the same deal. After the no-hitter and Jimbo's 500th, this guy was probably the only legit reason anyone could reasonably justify watching White Sox baseball in 2007. Shame. If I were you, I'd just erase every White Sox first round pick from 2000-2006 from your memory. Just try to act like it never happened.
  2. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 07:46 AM) This... Turn the page already. Only way I want to see Gentleman Jim on the squad is in a back up pinch hitting role. And with his inability to do anything other than DH, I don't think it's feasible. Jim sported an .864 OPS with the Sox in 2009. That was 4th among all qualified DH's . His wOBA and ISO were .374 and .243 respectively (yes, I'm really starting to warm up to sexy Sabermetrics). And people act like it'd be an insult to have this guy back? Other than Matsui, and he's more than likely going to command more than we have to spend, who else out there is a realistic upgrade over what JT provided for us last year? We have to be the only team in the history of baseball that has this ridiculous obsession with rotating DH's or having a DH that can play the field.
  3. QUOTE (BearSox @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 07:58 PM) Id be all over Ryan Garko as an option for DH Didn't the Giants trade a pretty good pitching prospect to acquire him? They must be seriously strapped for cash.
  4. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 06:32 PM) Never say never with KW, I agree the chances are slim, but you never know but every time someone updates this thread it gets my hopes up!! Unless he's willing to trade one of Danks/Floyd, I don't see anything happening. There's no mystery when it comes to our system. It's better than it was 3 years ago (not saying much), but we seriously lack depth and near major league ready talent. We've got Jordanks, Flowers, Hudson and Viciedo. Big nosedive after that. You're obviously not going to trade all 4 of those guys. But at the same time 3 of the 4 probably won't be enough.
  5. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) IF Freddie Bynum and OF T.J. Bohn. Both will be 30 to start next season and will likely be playing for Charlotte. Who and who?
  6. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) This is because KW understands that prospects, no matter how good they look in the minors are still suspects. You don't know how they'll do. So if he can get a major league player with a proven rack record for them, he will. These don't always work out either (Swisher). But you have a better chance on getting a good return on a player with major league record. I'm not complaining one bit. As a fan, I love the fact that KW is consistently able to get rid of future crap before everybody figures out they're, well, crap. I'm looking at it from a rival GM standpoint. If I'm a GM, I've LONG crossed KW and the White Sox off my list of teams I'm willing to deal with when it comes to young prospects. I'm looking at teams like the Braves and Marlins. Teams that consistently either produce their own talent or trade away young talent that goes on to flourish for other organizations. You just wonder how long KW is going to be able to get away with this. Hopefully, with all the changes throughout the minor league system the last few years, and an obvious philosophical change in drafting, will FINALLY be able to start to produce our own talent and not have to rely on swindling other GM's.
  7. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 11:41 AM) He had Tommy John surgery 5 months ago and isn't expected to be ready to go for another 7 months, doesn't sound very interesting to me. Not to mention he sucks at this thing we call pitching.
  8. QUOTE (G&T @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 10:22 PM) Teams still trade with the Braves and Yankees. KW has made the most trades involving prospects by a pretty good margin since he's been GM. And not a single one of them has become an even above average major leaguer. You're right about the Yankees (although guys like Cano, Chamberlain and Hughes have come through their system). But the Braves have been a prospect factory for over two decades. Just off the top of my head guys like Adam Wainwright, Neftali Feliz, Joey Devine and Elvis Andrus were drafted/signed then traded. That's top flight major league talent. Not to mention guys like Tommie Hanson and Jason Heyward. If I'm a GM and I'm lookin' to trade for prospects, one of the teams I'd target would be the Braves. Not the White Sox. But props to Kenny. He obviously knows when to get rid of these guys. You would just think after a while GM's would catch on. QUOTE (striker @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 12:04 AM) You can say that about alot of prospect in alot of organizations. Remember how expensive Todd VanPoppel's Gold Leaf rookies was? He was going to be the next Nolan Ryan. I remember Mets fans posting on MLBTR how Humber and Milledge were untouchable, how did they turn out? You're not getting what I'm saying. I know top prospects flop in every organization. My point is that it's mind-boggling with our recent history of pathetic drafts, combined with the fact that out of the dozens of prospects KW has traded over the years that not a single one of them has amounted to anything, that GM's are still willing to deal with him. If I'm a GM, I don't even look Kenny's way.
  9. It's amazing KW is able to trade away as many prospects as he does. At this point, why would any GM even look at a White Sox prospect, let alone trade for one? BA is doing a top 10 prospects of the decade for each team. I can't wait to see ours. It's going to be Beckham and a bunch of raw sewage.
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 08:54 PM) Not necessarily. It isnt as if the long relief/mopup role cannot be filled midseason by another arm should Hudson be traded. If everything worked out well we wouldnt be seeing much of the long reliever anyways, and our starters would be able to go deep into games and hand over the game to the setup guys and closer. I guess basically what I'm saying is that if they're penciling Hudson into next year's 'pen, whether it be as the long-man or another role, that more than likely we won't be players for a big bat. Of course, anything can happen. Especially when KW is involved. But I think it's a pretty safe assumption that it's going to be VERY difficult to land a big bat AND keep Hudson.
  11. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 07:02 PM) It makes perfect sense. Why is everyone so lost on this? 1-They just signed Putz 2-They want to season Hudson as a long reliever to prep him for next year's rotation 3-The Sox now have a rotation that allows them to need a long relief guy less than last year 4-They need the flexibility of an open roster spot or two to sign and/or trade for an OF and a power DH 5-They need to save money wherever they can If they're really committed to Hudson taking over DJ's role to at least begin next season, then I think it's safe to say AGON, Upton or any other big bat will not be acquired by trade.
  12. Whatever you decide to do just PLEASE get rid of that Dawson's Creek avatar. A small part of me dies whenever I see it.
  13. QUOTE (scotty22hotty @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 05:51 PM) "The two sides were several hundred thousand dollars apart" watch him get a $5M/2yr deal Bad move Kenny If that's the case then KW made the right move.
  14. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 05:28 PM) The thing is, it's probably not sustainable. He allowed only 5 HR in 93.1 IP, that's a 0.48 HR/9 and the main reason his FIP was so low. Only 4.9% of his flyballs allowed turned into HR, that's crazy especially for a guy who possesses pedestrian stuff like DJ. His BB/9 was also 2.80, another incredibly low number aiding that FIP, if the Sox project his HR allowed and BB/9 to increase in 2010 -- which they should as he regresses to the mean -- suddenly that FIP is up into the mid 4's and the player with the 3rd lowest average leverage index upon entering a game takes a huge hit in value, basically a replacement player could do an equal job for the minimum. DJ was probably just asking for too much damn money for what the Sox have him projected for in 2010. DJ had a good case for ~$\1.5M but there just isn't enough upside there to warrant that kind of paycheck in the minds of White Sox brass as 2009 was basically DJ Carrasco maxing out his talent, he'll likely never have a better year than he did in '09. For a little more guaranteed they were able to sign a guy who could be a very good closer if everything goes right, if everything goes right for DJ he duplicates his '09 production and is one of the best mop-up men in the game. Oh I agree, K. I was just giving DJ his due. B-rye obviously went way overboard.
  15. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 05:18 PM) This dont make any sense, he was the best guy out of the pen last year.. another KW move I don't like.. and to be honest I don't think he's made a good move since the Peavy trade. He wasn't THAT good. But he had a 3.46 FIP last year. That's pretty damn good for a long-man in the AL.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 05:14 PM) Very odd. There has to be more to the story. How do you go from what your manager called you most valuable pitcher because of his versatility to non-tendered over a few hundred thousand? Gotta be somethin' shady going on. This just doesn't make any sense.
  17. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 04:04 PM) Olivo has some upside to him I think. He can throw our runners and bats right, which will complement our #1 cathcer AJ There really isn't a whole lot of upside. He's got great power and a strong throwing arm. The rest of his game stinks. He's still going to command way more than a backup catcher would. I figure at least 3 million or so a year. We're obviously not going to pay him that.
  18. Love to have him back. Can't afford him.
  19. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) I think the Sox should trade him in May or June, I'm sure they can move him with a low era.. he always starts off the season GREAT and is lights out.. then it seems his arm gets tired/injured.. heres some stats: 09/08: March/April 1.12/2.53 May 2.79/.068 June 2.38/1.00 July 3.68/7.50 August 8.49/DL Sept 9.00/11.05 You don't think any of the other 29 GM's in baseball know that he's struggled mightily in the second half of recent seasons? And for the last time...HE HAS A FULL NO TRADE CLAUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  20. I was watching some Putz highlight clips from '06/'07 at MLB.COM. Man was he filthy those years. If we can get 80-85% of the Putz from those years this could go down as KW's best acquisition yet.
  21. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 12:33 PM) I wouldn't mind a resurgent Cotts... But really, this DJ situation makes no sense to me, especially considering what DA said, they're only a couple hundred thousand apart... Since when did the definition of resurgent become horses***? People hate Scott Linebrink? Cotts makes Linebrink look like prime Scott Shields. Cotts' numbers/rates since his fluke 2005: ERA: 5.06, WHIP: 1.58, H/9: 10.0, HR/9 1.80, BB/9: 4.2 That's a bucket of s*** right there.
  22. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 03:15 PM) I agree that the loss isn't as big as some are making it out to be, but I don't agree that is isn't as important. Carrasco also pitched some 6th, 7th, 8th innings for us at times as well so he wasn't just strictly a mop up guy. He will be missed if he was non-tendered but this doesn't make our pen all of a sudden horrid. BTW I still do not trust Randy Williams at all. Don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not saying all is lost if we lose Carrasco. But don't give me the 'he's only a mop up guy' and 'anybody' can fill his role. And I'm not saying you're doing that@Ace.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 04:46 PM) Pretentious asshole? You guys must see him on TV or something. I just read his stuff and think it's good ... and free. Did you miss when Cowley figuratively (without reason) s*** on Jason and everybody that does such a fine job over at SN?
  24. I'll be EXTREMELY pissed if we lose Carrasco. Here's a great article from fangraphs breaking down the top mop up guys in the game this past season. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/mopping-up-in-2009
  25. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 01:09 PM) so if they trade Jenks and move Putz into the closer role, we've got a 6.25 million closer. how much is Jenks making? Yeah, that threw me for a loop as well. If Putz remains healthy all year, he won't be making that much less than Jenks will be. Which makes you think that shopping Bobby has as much to do with them (KW and Ozzie) being 'fed' up with his yearly weight/conditioning issues as they are with the raise he will surely get through arbitration.
