Roy Halladay in a White Sox uniform???
QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 08:25 AM) if williams somehow found a taker for Konerko (clearly very unlikely) i could easily see him pulling off a deal for halladay and just going for this thing on pitching and defense.... And who would be our everyday 1B? Kotsay?

Are people really buying this crap? Even for a second? I know it's KW. But come on now. We are no way in hell in the running for Roy Halladay.

Mark Buehrle's Perfect American Chopper
QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 05:39 PM) So, do you think that Frank would've had a career .300 average and 500 career HRs in Walsh's era? How are you so convinced that Frank was miles better than Shoeless Joe Jackson? Still LOL at your dismissal of Walsh. Yeah, I'm sure that he'd suck in today's game, as evidenced by his performance among his peers in the early 1900s. Is Frank one of the top 10 hitters ever? Better than Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, Bonds, Mays, Musial, Williams, Wagner, Cobb, Gwynn, etc.? He's *probably* the best hitter in Sox history, but he very well may not sniff the Top 10 of all time. This appears to be your way of automatically dismissing players simply because they played a long time ago. I could throw that same qualifier on Frank, who had the luxury of playing in a live ball era, complete with small ballparks, lighter bats, lower pitching mounds, diluted pitching talent, and diets/workout regimens that maximized athletic ability. I don't see much evidence that Frank was that much better than his peers than Walsh was among his. Whatever, dude. Frank is by far and away the best player in franchise history. I'm not about to get into some heated debate over a guy who had a microscopic era in a league in which the league leader in HR's hit a whopping 7.

Andruw Jones Wants to Start for the Sox
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 05:28 PM) For me, it's as simple as this: compare him to Colby Rasmus, age, ability, development, minor league production, quality of competition. Now look at what Rasmus did in 2009. There's really no reason for me to believe that Jordan Danks wouldn't be a complete disaster at the plate in 2010. I did just that. Nice job, K. Now I'm even more convinced Danks shouldn't sniff the 2010 roster.

Hideki Matsui
I think Ozzie needs to get over this 'I want my DH to be able to play the field' crap. I mean players for the most part that are DH's are DH's for a reason. I don't care if my DH can't play the field. I want my DH to mash.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 05:04 PM) Just think of this: the year Ed Walsh won 40 games there were only 8 teams in the American League, the average team OPS was .598, there were 116 total HR hit that season and the league leader in homeruns was Sam Crawford with 7. Exactly. And I consider myself a baseball historian. I love reading about or watching old clips of great players from previous eras. For my money, and I obviously never got to see him live, but from what I've read and what I have been able to see, Willie Mays is the best all-around player of all time. So I can't be accused of dismissing anybody I never saw play.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) The guy has the lowest career ERA in the history of baseball, and you're brushing him off as though he were a joke because he played a long time ago. So is he one of the top 10 pitchers ever? Context is very important when you want to throw out names of guys that played, like, 100 years ago. And I never brushed him off. I said from the start he was great for that time. Now if you're saying he's one of the best pitchers ever because he has the lowest ERA ever, well, I'll just stay out of it.

Andruw Jones Wants to Start for the Sox
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 04:26 PM) HA! You have something like 100 different registrations, over the past seven years. That means you had to take the time to create a different email account and address for each time you re-registered, not to mention the time put in each time to find a new IP to post from. If you don't think it is an obsession, I do not think you know what that word means. What gets me is he won't even try to disguise his writing style or his 'I'm god's gift to message boards everywhere' superiority complex.

Hideki Matsui
Do people think CQ would be a disaster in RF because of the foot or do they think he simply can't play the position?

Mark Buehrle's Perfect American Chopper
QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 12:10 PM) Some of you need to realize that good baseball players existed prior to 1980 and that not every superstar in today's game is superior to the superstars of your father's or grandfather's era. You can opine all you want about Frank being better than Walsh, but to objectively claim that "it's not even close" is just silly. Walsh is in the Hall of Fame for good reason: He's the all-time leader in ERA (1.82), he had a 40-win season in 1908, and he had five 350+ IP seasons (including two of over 400 IP). That's a remarkable career, even for the dead-ball era. I'd love to see one of today's pitchers win 40 games or try to throw 400 innings in a single season. Again, he was great for that time. And lol@you would like to see a pitcher today win 40 games or throw 400 innings. I'd like to see Ed Walsh in today's game attempting to keep his ERA below 10.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 10:37 AM) Ed Walsh says hi. And you can tell his ghost I said hi right back. It's still not close. Walsh was great for his time. Frank was great for ANY time.

Free Agent Relievers Poll
Well the three best relievers on that list are easily Verlarde, Soriano and Gonzalez. I've had a man-crush on Soriano since about 2003. Gonzalez would fit a specific need in that he's a quality lefty. Valverde has been one of the top 5 or 6 closers in baseball the last 3 seasons. If I had a choice, I'd want Valverde.

Andruw Jones Wants to Start for the Sox
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2009 -> 03:41 PM) I wouldnt want the guy on my team if he didn't want to be a starter. That's all fine and dandy. I'm sure Brent Lillibridge would like to start. Long as Ozzie doesn't give two s***s on whether he wants to start or not is all that matters.

It's December 6. I'm not going to even give this a second thought. If around March we're hearing rumblings of Andruw Jones starting then we have a MAJOR problem.

Official 2009-2010 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2009 -> 10:51 AM) Whoever thought they wouldn't miss Ben Gordon's shooting was way off, but as has been pointed out, this isn't a contender with him either. They probably are better taking their lumps and getting a lottery pick. The Bulls better hope Wade or LeBron come to Chicago or they will be stuck being a team that really isn't good enough for a long time. Rose can be great, but even adding a Bosh isn't going to make them a team that would have much of a chance against the top teams in the NBA in a 7 game series. If they don't land one of the top FA, they will be exactly what you don't want an NBA team to be. Good enough to where guys like James Johnson are the top guys on the board when you draft, but not good enough to ever really go on a serious playoff run. If the Bulls didn't beat the odds and win the lottery a couple of years ago, just think how bad their present and future would be. Well said. We were better off during the post-dynasty years winning 15-20 games and at least giving ourselves a legit chance to land a stud in the draft. Ironically, the year in which we decided to show a little improvement and get to 30 wins, was the same year Lebron, Wade, Melo and Bosh came out. But we got Kirk Hinrich!

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 09:55 PM) Greg Oden might have just suffered a really bad knee injury. The video of it looked terrible. He had started to play really well and looked like he might begin to live up to his potential. He's really starting to look a lot like Sam Bowie. But even without the injuries, Oden seems to lack that 'it' factor. It's a shame. Because his physical tools are undeniable.

Official 2009-2010 NBA Thread
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 09:37 PM) What a way to show Chris Bosh that we completely suck. Geez if they are gonna show this type of crap to these coveted FA, other than the whole large market, big city ordeal (though the friggin Knicks can say the same crap with that horrid team) than we would be in terrible shape. BTW.. Noah can taken over as the team leader in every way. The Bulls aren't fooling anybody (regardless of last night's play). They're stuck in perpetual mediocrity. Bad drafting (sound familiar?) is a culprit. We really dropped the ball in 2004 and 2006. Yes, I know it's easy to look back years later and be critical. But that's what scouts or talent evaluators or whatever get paid to do. In 2004 we take Luol Deng when guys like Andre Iguodala, Josh Smith, Al Jefferson, and Kevin Martin (I didn't have a problem with taking BG at #3. We desperately needed backcourt scoring) were still on the board. I don't think I even have to recap 2006. That draft was CRITICAL (we basically got a free lottery pick from the Knicks) and we botched that. And not getting Ronnie Brewer when he was there to be had and taking Sefolosha was very questionable at best right then and there. And of course it looks downright foolish now. When you have little to no chance of ever landing a premier free agent (Ben Wallace does not count), you can't screw up multiple drafts. You can to some degree get away with that in baseball (as the White Sox have proven). But you can't get away with that in the NBA (unless you already have a superstar in place).

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 6, 2009 -> 05:09 AM) Buehrle is literally the coolest guy on the team. Good for them. his wife is cool as hell too. If Mark doesnt get into the HOF, he should have his number retired by the SOX. Seriously he is the best. My favorite player was always Frank and Fisk, but after I met Mark it wasnt even close. He's the best White Sox player in history IMO. You had me until this last line. Everybody has their opinion. But when you break it down, Frank is the best player in franchise history. And it's not even close.
