  1. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:37 PM) They money coming off the books is going to pay for their salaries. It's really only Jose and one of Dye or Thome (as I imagine we're going to have to keep one of them). If Jerry is pissed at our swoon and low attendance over the next month there might not be much money there after raises and such. Don't forget Dotel's 6 million.
  2. QUOTE (Hollywood_AU @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:36 PM) I meant for the sake of his heel, not fatigue. And I still disagree. If CQ is injury prone then so be it. If he can play, he should play.
  3. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:32 PM) i agree. everyone talks about how good were going to be next year, but we have a lot of questions for next yr. ur right about that pen though. who knows what were guna do with it So we're complaining now that KW went out and landed a proven ace and a 5-tool, GG caliber CF? Newsflash: Guys like that don't come cheap. We're not exactly gonna file for bankruptcy anytime soon. There's a ton of money coming off the books this year. It's not like we need a brand new bullpen. Just another reliable arm or two. Not saying guys like that are easy to find. They're not. But it's doable.
  4. QUOTE (Hollywood_AU @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:30 PM) It's time to do the wise thing, and finish the season as if we are 20 games back. -Don't rush Peavy -Give CQ lots of days off -Put Danks, Floyd, and Mark on pitch counts Even the most optomistic fans have to ask themselves what about this team makes you think they have any chance at the playoffs? Just call the season what it is, and use September to prepare for next year. He's had plenty of days off this season (including September and the playoffs last year). No reason at all to give him time off.
  5. Never, ever underestimate the importance of a solid bullpen. I don't know how many times I've seen it. You can get by with a so-so rotation at times. A lousy bullpen? It ain't happenin'.
  6. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:23 PM) Wow.. even most of the posters here could have hit that pitch out.. 5 games back and falling. That's why he's Randy Williams.
  7. I'm not even mad. I really just want to get through this season and get to work on 2010. That's when the fun should begin.
  8. Couple things: 1: Mark better locate tonight. 2: We better catch the damn ball. Otherwise this game will be over by the 4th inning. This Yankee lineup is no joke.
  9. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 03:21 PM) Soriano is terrible.. already made an error and just missed another that he should have caught then it got by him.. he's terrible. He makes Dye look like a gold glover. It just cracks me up the Cubs are stuck with Soriano, Zambrano, Bradley, Fukodome for big money for a long time. I don't think they'll be getting any better for years unless some Yankee like money is put into them. It's back to the 1990's for them very soon. It's weird. They've actually been halfway competent this decade. I believe they've only had two losing seasons since 2001. But like you said, they're stuck with some terrible, terrible contracts for quite a while. And they've got next to nothing at the farm on any level.
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 03:56 PM) Kazmir, Weaver, Saunders is a pretty nice looking young set of 3 starters. Santana has been all over the place but has stuff (he's just really been hurt by injuries this year). Saunders hasn't been that great either, but he was hurt too. Angels have done incredibly well given how snake-bit they've been with injuries. Santana/Saunders/Lackey all missing extensive time, plus Vladdy and Torri. And than on top of that you have the Adenhart tragedy. That's why I bust out laughing (I laugh at the Cubs regardless) when their short bus fans and others try to blame their terrible season on injuries. NOBODY has had to deal with more on the injury front (and as you mentioned, the terrible Adenhart tragedy) then the Angels have. They've got a heck of a franchise. I ache for us to get to that level of year-in and year-out consistency to which they've achieved.
  11. QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 10:51 PM) Allen just hit his first ML homer ROY?
  12. No doubt it was a mistake. Ranks right up there with the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth for cash.
  13. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) Everyday player? LOL. Just let it go. I went from liking Brandon Pujols to hating him strictly because of this board.
  14. I'm gonna give it at least half a year (maybe longer than that) before I come to any definitive conclusion about Pena. I happen to like him a lot. But he has disappointed so far. But I have faith that Coop and the rest of the staff will get him turned around.
  15. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) Agreed. Making the playoffs 12 or however-many-it-was years in a row is not something I'd look forward to. LOL. 14 to be exact. I don't care how many titles they won. To get to October that many times in a row is the most impressive feat I've ever witnessed as a sports fan of almost 19 years.
  16. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 25, 2009 -> 03:53 PM) They are really fun to watch. My second favorite team in the MLB now (and I'm not just saying that cause I'm the GM of their team in a fantasy baseball league) I mean I love watching the young guys play. Dexter Fowler.. I have to agree. I was cheering for the Giants to win the WC strictly because I want to make sweet love to Tim Lincecum. But like you said, the Rockies are extremely fun to watch (I've only seen about 3 of their games, but I've been watching plenty of highlights on MLB.Com). They've got a really nice blend of youth (Fowler, Gonzalez, Stewart, Iannetta, Smith, Jimenez, De La Rosa, Morales, Street) and vets (Helton, Hawpe, Barmes, Spilborghs, Marquis, Cook). Offensively, they've got so many guys that can hurt you. They're deep and versatile. Their rotation, while not dominating, is pretty damn solid. Ubaldo Jimenez is on the cusp of stardom. As this article goes into detail on how good he's been - http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/ubaldos-an-ace. De La Rosa is another stud in the making. Marquis and Cook have lousy peripherals. But they induce a s***load of ground balls and they keep their walks to a minimum. Bullpen is solid as well led by Huston Street. I really like this team. Oh, and they're only 2 games behind the Dodgers now.
  17. Do the Rockies have the mojo going right now or what? Down 4-1 in the bottom of the 14th and they come up with 5 runs, highlighted by a walk-off grand slam by Ryan Spilborghs, to beat the Giants 6-4. Colorado is 53-26 since Jim Tracy took over for Clint Hurdle. They're only 3 games behind the Dodgers. Amazing run they're on right now.
  18. I knew better then to assume Jose would maintain his hot period when he came back from the minors. Fact is he's been below average since the second half of 2006. I'll always remember him for the contributions he's made to the team (he was the ace of one of the most dominant pitching staffs of the decade), but his time is up after this year.
  19. I'm in because I love the White Sox and will cheer for them no matter what. I'm out because I don't think this is anymore than a .500 team and Detroit is just a tad better and will win the division. So a little of both.
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 07:41 PM) Well, the funny thing is we should be leading 4-1 and Jose was throwing 95 MPH tonight at age 40+. But not to be...this whole season just feels like one big missed opportunity. The writings been on the wall for a while. I don't have to wait two seconds before we're officially eliminated to see it. The talent as a whole is there. But we don't have the other stuff to go with the talent. I've taken no comfort in the fact that we've been "in it" until this point. This is NOT a playoff team. If we get there, it would be because Detroit just fell apart.
  21. I've got 4 open slots for an ESPN league. Draft is next Monday night. Shoot me an IM if you're interested.
  22. Just heard the news on Mully and Hanley. What can you really say? The guy is just snakebitten when it comes to injuries. I heard he looked really good on Satruday as well. I loved the pick when it was made. Oh, well. Gotta move on at some point.
  23. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) Gracias. Had an interesting night last night to say the least, hope I can top it tonight. Details? Happy b-day scrub.
  24. Anybody see the show John Smoltz put on yesterday? 9 K's in 5 innings (including 7 in a row at one point). His change was f***in' nasty. Dave Duncan+NL=John Smoltz of old. And for all the talk about how terrible the NL is (and I believe it is terrible overall), I'm really lookin' forward to the NL playoffs. More so than any other year I can remember. The Dodgers, Phillies and Cardinals are not only the top 3 teams in the NL (rank them in any order you want), but you could make a good case for any of them being the top team in all of baseball right now. And the NL WC race is shaping up to be pretty exciting as well. Lot of young and exciting teams goin' at it. Throw in the fact the Cubs won't be anywhere near the playoffs, and the NL looks pretty nice right now.
