  1. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 09:53 PM) Watched more of Cards/Dodgers than Sox game tonight. First time I sat and watched Kershaw since he faced us last year. Holy cow, his off speed pitches are nasty. Why would the Dodgers ever consider trading that guy? His fastball is sick enough. And that's not even his best pitch. Like I said yesterday, there's two pitchers in all of baseball I would trade Clayton Kershaw straight up for. That's Tim Lincecum and Felix Hernandez. That's it.
  2. QUOTE (ChiSox @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:02 PM) classic overreaction. it's just baseball. sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's not. that series was not fun outside of buehrle breaking a record. series like that happen in baseball. it's just how it is. let's just hope they can turn it around soon. if not, at least we can enjoy beckham tearing it up. serenity now. No, that's where you're wrong. A classic overreaction is me creating this thread in April, May or even June. We are four months into the season now. What more do we need to find out about this team? Why do we have to wait until two minutes before we're officially eliminated to call a spade a spade? Defense alone is probably going to be enough to keep this team from winning the division. I'm not even going to get into the other deficiencies.
  3. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:00 PM) Buy for the future. I have no problem with the Sox trading a group of prospects for a veteran that is going to be with the Sox for 2, 3 more years. This I agree with. But knowing Kenny, he's going to attempt to do something crazy for this year. This is probably the only time where I'm happy we don't have the elite prospects that other teams have.
  4. QUOTE (CQMVP @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:03 PM) The White Sox offensive rankings in the ML are: 29th in Doubles 26th in Triples 5th in HR, yet 14th in Runs 20th in BB 13th in SB 15th in BAVG The White Sox defensive rankings in the ML are: 27th in Fielding Percentage 25th in SB against 26th in Total Errors This team is not good enough to win the division, even a division as bad as the AL Central. They CANNOT play fundamental baseball to save their lives. This is basically the status quo since 2005. I'm about done watching them. They're just not a fun team to watch anymore. But, but, we're still "in it". Like the little black kid from Angels in the outfield said...."It could happen!"
  5. Yes, I know. "We're still in it." "The season is far from over." "Until the math says we're done anything can happen." Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't have to wait until we're mathematically eliminated to know this is a below average team in a lousy division. 4 months is more than enough of a sample size to know what kinda team we have. We're not getting Halladay. We're not getting Peavy. We're not getting Haren. We're not getting anybody that you can legitimately says makes this team better. And I for one would be disgusted if Kenny went out there and gave up valuable trade pieces to try and salvage this sinking ship because from a technical standpoint we're still "in it."
  6. I don't want to hear it! "We're only 2 games out." This is a below average baseball team. Kenny needs to be in full sell mode right now. Don't do anything stupid to try to win this crappy division. This is kinda why I don't like the three divisions and WC from each league. You're deluded into thinking you're a contender because from a technical standpoint you're 'in it' when in reality you're not really that good. This team has so many flaws that I'm not going to bother listing them all. We've neglected the farm for years and we're playing dearly for it. We're on the way up. But it's going to take a while to undo the damage from the 2000-2006 drafts. We need to get whatever we can for our vets and build from within. I'm more than ready to absorb a down year or two if it leads to a run of sustained excellence. No more of this pulling a fluke year out our asses every 3-5 years. For the eternal optimists, flame away. I really don't care.
  7. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 07:50 PM) The biggest concern with Lee is how he handles big situations. His success these past 2 years has come when the Indians sucked. I'm interested to see how he handles a lot more pressure now. Do you have some kinda personnel vendetta against Lee? I notice it seems really hard for you to just acknowledge he's a good pitcher. Before the season you (and a lot of people) dismissed him as a 1-season fluke. And you were still doing this even through May when it was pretty clear last year wasn't a fluke. Now he's getting traded to a considerably weaker league where guys like Randy Wells and Joel Pinerio are dominating and now you're questioning if he can handle pressure?
  8. QUOTE (Nokona @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 07:02 PM) Sabean is hilariously bad That may or may not be true. Doesn't really matter to me. But let's look at the whole picture here. You've got a team (the Giants) with arguably the best pitching staff top to bottom in the NL. The WC is staring them right in the face. Everybody knows what they lack: Offense. Now If Sabean sits on all these prospects and doesn't make a move of any kind to upgrade the offense, everybody is saying what they're saying right now: That's he's an idiot. So it's a lose/lose. Now in Lincecum/Cain, the Giants have their 1-2 starters for the next 10 years (or at least until they can become free agents). You've got Bumgarner in the minors. If he's as good as we've been led to believe, you've got 3/5ths of your rotation set for years to come. And you can just round out the rotation after that. They had quality pitching prospects to spare. So they made the moves they made. Garko/Sanchez certainly aren't stars, but they're upgrades. And they give the Giants a better chance to win the WC. Prospects will come and go. But when you have a staff like theirs, and you have a legitimate chance to get to October, I think you gotta go for it. Even if you have to overpay.
  9. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 06:37 PM) Matt Cain's been pretty stellar as well. Should be fun to see how their young pitchers do in the post season. You best believe, as some have already pointed out, that the possibility of seeing the Giants in the NLDS was a reason the Phillies went so hard after Halladay/Lee. When you've got a 1-2 like that, you've got a chance.
  10. I just want to see Tim Linecum in the playoffs. What the hell do I care if the Giants overpaid for Sanchez? Just get that man to the postseason!
  11. QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 06:21 PM) Or those two outfielders Taylor and Brown... those three together could probably net you Halladay if you really wanted him Taylor and Brown would be the top 2 OF 'spects in probably 75% of the farm systems in baseball.
  12. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 06:23 PM) He actually doesn't have the dominating numbers you would think he should have given his prospect status, but he also is 20 and in AA. Exactly. 20 in AA. I'm not going to sit here and say awful trade for the Giants. I've never seen Alderson throw a pitch live before. I can just go by what I read. I guess the Giants know something about him nobody else does. Or they just really wanted Sanchez.
  13. WTF? Sanchez for Alderson? Has Alderson been grossly overrated by, I don't know, everybody?
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 05:41 PM) The Phillies got a very good pitcher who's signed for another year without giving up their top prospects. That's a hell of a deal for them. I can't 'fathom' how anybody sees this as a bad move for the Phillies. I'm actually jealous.
  15. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) The Phillies got robbed blind on this one. Ultimately, I’d say it adds about to 2-4 wins this year in a division they were almost assured to win without making a move. And you could say the same thing about Halladay. The Phillies aren't shooting for division titles. They're going for championships. And a rotation headed by Lee/Hamels (or Hamels/Lee), Blanton, Moyer and possibly Pedro gives them a much better chance in October. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 04:31 PM) I think the playoffs are too big of a crapshoot to just assume that getting a top pitcher is going to clinch you a trip to the World Series. The way I see it is that the Phillies gave up a decent haul for a piece that will help them slightly, but offer no significant upgrade for the rest of the year. On paper the Phillies would look good going into a series against the Giants, however, if paper stood for anything then the Yankees would win it ever year. Looking at this deal In the long-term it does make sense, and stands to benefit both sides. Who's assuming anything? They're attempting to give themselves the best chance to win a championship. By your logic no team with a 5+ game lead in their division should attempt to make themselves better because anybody can win in the playoffs. Remember when the Sox had a 15 game lead in 2005? Remember all the Griffey rumors? Remember all the AJ Burnett rumors? That's what a good GM does. Of course anybody can win. That's what's great. You still don't sit on your hands if you have a chance to get better.
  16. This Astros team is horrible. I'm talking not that much better than the Nationals horrible. I look up and down their roster and literally want to puke.
  17. All I can saw is WOW! The Phillies have blown right past the Dodgers as the favorite in the NL. And they got a quality right-handed power bat as well? They gave up a pretty good package (I really like Knapp), but they keep their top pitching prospect and two top position prospects. Props to Amaro Jr. And Riccardi is starting to look like a big poopy head right now.
  18. IT.IS.OVER! But honestly, I wish Brian the best. Maybe there's some talent hiding (and I mean really hiding) somewhere that another team can bring out.
  19. QUOTE (chunk23 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:42 PM) Well, a lot of White Sox fans think the Pena-Allen trade was an olive branch gift after the Quentin trade (like Iguchi after the Garcia trade), so maybe Qualls will come cheap as a make up for the Pena-Allen trade. Fixed.
  20. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) Sox are not confident in there pen right now. They are looking for relief help. Qualls would be a very nice pick-up. I understand that. But let's not semi-gut the farm for relievers. I imagine Qualls wouldn't come cheap.
  21. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 12:02 PM) Ok, enough about the murdering nonsense. In other news, the DBacks are definitely not giving up Haren, per Rosenthal: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9863582...day%27s-edition D-backs official: Haren staying — 12:29 p.m. Lest we start wondering if another ace might be thrust into the midseason swap meet, one senior Diamondbacks official said emphatically Tuesday morning that Dan Haren isn't going anywhere. Haren is under contract through 2013. He's been among the best pitchers in baseball this year — 10-5 record, 2.14 ERA, 141 strikeouts in 143 innings — and figures to be entering his prime at age 28. "We're not trading him," the Arizona official said. "We don't want to change our core." The term 'duh' comes to mind when I read this. And that's not a shot at you, shack. They gave up a ton to get him. He's been every bit as good as they could've hoped (probably even better). He's right smack in his prime and under control (as the article states) for the next 4 years. There was never any substance here. Time to let go of this pipe.
  22. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 10:03 PM) It ain't looking good, that's for sure. Minus Mitchell, this draft looks very very weak. Hopefully Thompson is a player. However, two players can make a draft, but it would nice to add to our depth and give us some trading chips. No offense, maggs. But that's a ridiculous comment right there. The draft wasn't even 50 days ago. I'd say its just a little early to say this draft looks weak.
  23. Edwin Jackson comes to mind for me. I thought the Rays had made a pretty good deal considering the surplus of premium pitching prospects they had in the minor leagues. Its turned out to be pretty one-sided to this point. Jackson has been one of the top 10 pitchers in the AL this year. Matt Joyce has, well, let's say Brian Anderson would point and laugh at him right now. Edit: I didn't realize Joyce has only had 32 at bats with the Rays this year. Still, a pretty bad trade by them to this point.
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 06:25 AM) CLIFF LEE s*** TIM LINCECUM yeah, I would trade the entire minor league system minus any player on the 40-man that the Giants didn't want for Lincecum right now. He has quickly and, quite frankly, not very quietly overtaken Johan Santana as the best pitcher in the league. He's the single reason why I think the Giants would have a real shot to get to the World Series if they make it to October. He's that f***ing good.
  25. Am I the only one who thinks they should just give the CY to Tim Lincecum right now? What he did to the Pirates last night was just wrong. Only guy with a legitimate case for the award to this point is Dan Haren. But they typically don't give the award to a guy from a lousy team.
