Sporting News and the Sox
QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 09:46 AM) Look at his numbers for the second half. He was above 3:1 for his K:BB. Sure, his first half was incredibly flukey, but his second half was legit. His BABIP was .268. That's well below league average. And his G/F and HR ratios are a little troubling for a guy that had average at best K/9. Like I said, I hope I'm worrying over nothing.

Sporting News and the Sox
I hope you guys are right about Floyd. But I worry about him a lot more than I do Mark or even John. I'm definitely not one to obsess over stats. But his 2008 screams fluke. I pray to god I'm wrong. Because we've got no chance if he doesn't at least match what he did last year.

Time to bring back Frank
QUOTE (Jeremy @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 10:35 PM) You're right, you have to adjust for the era by using a stat like OPS+. Collins topped 150 for the Sox once (165). Frank top 165 in each of his first eight seasons including a staggering 211 in '94. That's a massive amount of ground for Collins to make up with his defense. A small part of me dies whenever I think about what could've been in 1994. Frank was having one of the great statistical seasons in the history of the sport. And it could've easily went down as the greatest statistical season in the history of the sport.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 09:29 PM) They're amazingly efficient on offense. Thompson's been their weak link this tourney, but he's playing great tonight. Their defense is much better than it's given credit for, too. When you average 90+ PPG and play the kinda up-and-down style on offense they play you're going to give up some points. But I believe they were 5th or 6th in defensive efficiency rating during the regular season, which, IMO, is a better indicator of what kinda defensive team you are than raw PPG allowed. And they've been totally lockdown during this tournament.

UNC has the perfect combination of size, athleticism, perimeter scoring and interior scoring in the country. Their performance overall in this tournament has been one of the most impressive I can remember.

2009 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 07:01 PM) Think the Blue Jays will finish ahead of the O's? I think I'll take the young and hungry team over the team watching its parts leave due to budget cuts most years. Blue Jays still have pretty good pitching. The O's are severely lacking after Guthrie.

2009 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 05:00 PM) CC taking a very expensive beating from the young Orioles. Gives up 6 so far, leaves with the bases loaded and 1 out in the 5th. They'll probably finish in last. But the O's are going to be at the very least an extremely entertaining team to watch. Adam Jones is gonna be special. Man the Mariners are f***ing morons.

Official 2008-2009 NBA Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) He needs to have his own damn building in the Hall. There was a good article by Adrian Wojnarowski suggesting just that. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Aikq...o&type=lgns It's been over 10 years since he retired (The Wizards years never happened as far as I'm concerned), and there's still just no way to 100% put into words or fully describe his overall impact on the game, sports and society in general. I was hoopin' at the park the other day and some kid, who couldn't have been anymore than 10 years old, was sticking out his tongue and doin' Jordan's famous fist pump as he drove to the basket and after made baskets. This kid should be mimicking Kobe or Lebron. Not a guy who was just about retired from the game before he was even born.

BEARS GET CUTLER!!!
Is it me, or is the level of excitement generated by this move unprecedented in Chicago sports history? Not including championships (the Bulls 6 titles, the Bears '85 title, the White Sox '05 title), when has a single Chicago sports happening single-handedly transform the city? The only thing I can think of that exceeds this move in terms of excitement generated is when Jordan came back in '95. Then again, the whole world transformed when that happened.

Sporting News and the Sox
Unlike past years when we were predicted to finish third or worse, I've got no problem with where were being predicted to finish this year. This is a team with a TON of question marks. I personally don't think there's going to be any in between with this team. Will either win the division or finish 4th or last.

Official 2008-2009 College Basketball Thread
QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Apr 4, 2009 -> 10:51 PM) Thanks chimpy. There are plenty of douchebag UNC fans, they feel like they own the world. I try to stay humble through it all. You're literally the only decent UNC fan I know of anywhere. Congrats.

QUOTE (The Bones @ Apr 4, 2009 -> 10:50 PM) But the Big East this year is the greatest collection of basketball teams ever. How can the national champion not be from that conference? The Big East teams obviously were worn down from that brutal conference season playing teams like Rutgers and South Florida night after night. In a conference with 16 teams, you're going to have 2-3 cupcakes. Still doesn't take away from the fact that it was indeed one of the best and deepest conferences ever. Congrats to MSU. I knew they were good. Never thought they would get to this point. And I fully expect them to get smoked by UNC. But I won't be surprised if they're able pull off the upset. When you can beat Louisville and UConn back-to-back, you can beat anybody.

BEARS GET CUTLER!!!
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Apr 2, 2009 -> 10:21 PM) it's gonna be strange watching a Bears QB and not hold my breath and expect the worst... Strange? More like shocking. I'm just glad that will never have to hear the term "game manager" for a while.

Props
QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 2, 2009 -> 10:24 PM) Yeah let's just insert random interpretations of what I meant by that. Come on now. I can play this game too. If they asked for all of our first rounders until 2015, Angelo should've done it since he would've wasted them anyway! f*** it, Cutler baby! That's basically the card the pro "Give them whatever they want for Cutler" guys played from day one. lol. But it was irrelevant then and even more so now. Like you, I will not back down from my original stance. You don't just give up anything for anybody. I don't care who it is. Now, as far as the trade goes, I am absolutely thrilled. Much props to Jerry Angelo and co for going out there and seizing an opportunity that rarely ever comes along. We've, at least for the next three years, solved this franchise's most glaring hole since, well, forever. Is this a risk-free trade? I don't think so. Two first rounders and a third rounder is a steep price to pay. Can we get Jay the weapons that he and any star QB would need to be the best they can be? Nobody knows yet. Cutler is immensely talented. Nobody argues that. But look at what this guy had around him in Denver. He doesn't have anything remotely close to that in Chicago. But Jerry Angelo has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt for now.

Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!
QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Apr 2, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) short bus retarded? Please... Angelo's 1st round picks Columbo - Haynes - Grossman - Tommie Harris - Benson - DManning - Olsen - Williams - would you give up 2 of those for an above average QB - i sure as hell would lets see....Williams is still questionable but as of now thats 2 out of 8 that have been a good thing for the bears... So a 25% hit rate....s*** with that number I'd give them 3 #1s for an above average QB.... Sorry, past draft history has absolutely nothing to do with 2009 and beyond.

Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 2, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) It will really depend on what package ends up getting Cutler. If it looks like something the Bears could have reasonably matched or beat, we'll be hearing about this for years to come. "Crede woulda had that!" will become "Cutler woulda completed that!" Except we know this won't be the case. Let's say the Redskins, who appear to be the favorites, give up a two firsts and a second or a third, which would be short bus retarded. You're going to have every fan from 15 to 75 screaming at the top of their lungs "WHAT! THAT'S ALL IT TOOK! DRAFT PICKS! I WANT EVERYBODY FIRED!" You know it's coming.

Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!
QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 2, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) Sure you're going to have to give up value. That's a given. That doesn't mean you pre-lube your asshole though. Bingo! And you knew this was coming the moment it was even insinuated that Cutler could be available. It's not nearly as simple as "GIVE THEM WHATEVER THEY WANT FOR CUTLER!" And the sad thing is that if the Bears don't get him, it's going to be automatically assumed that they dropped the ball.

Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 1, 2009 -> 10:30 PM) I have 0 problem with Angelo giving up a first rounder for this year and next, especially considering he's hardly drafted well early in rounds anyway. The man usually finds gems in the later rounds anyways. But I do agree that giving up a first, second, third, first, third, fourth etc.. giving up the universe (this is way past the moon) for Cutler is idiotic. I'm probably gonna get blasted from this (and rightfully so IMO) but I still think Hanie is gonna be a diamond in the rough. (won't go as far as a couple posters I've read on other boards calling him the next Romo, but I think he can be pretty good). Kid is athletic, good arm and can illude pressure. Sure it's a small sample, but hopefully we'll see more from the kid. But hey, you get a chance to get Cutler, a Bears fan at that, without giving up the universe... (the moon I can live it) you gotta do it. I'd 100% agree with you if we were only a QB away from contending. If the Vikings got Cutler, they're automatically a SB contender. Even with Cutler, I'm not sure were a playoff team given our other glaring holes.

Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!
QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Apr 1, 2009 -> 10:22 PM) If we were better at drafting I would mind but look at how many misses our front office has had in the draft the past few years. I totally understand where you're coming from. At least from an offensive standpoint. But Olsen in 2007 and Forte last year look like winners. No way to judge Chris Williams at this point.
-
Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!
QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Apr 1, 2009 -> 10:10 PM) Think about it this way. Orton, Chris Williams and Earl Bennett. You wouldnt trade that for Cutler? Or Peyton Manning? lol. Easy to pull that card after you know who's been drafted. And in WhiteSoxBrian's hypothetical proposal we more than likely give up a first or second in 2010. That's my whole beef. That is why trades like this rarely ever happen. It's almost impossible for both sides to come away satisfied.

Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Apr 1, 2009 -> 09:45 PM) Name me 3 QB's who have either been bad/medicore/whatever that have won a Super Bowl in the last 13. I'm counting Eli Manning as "good". Try me. You build your team around franchise QB's. We build our WR's, OL, and D with this upcoming draft and through next year's FA and draft. I guess Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson were All-Pros when the Ravens and Bucs won it all? Jake Delhomme sucked the year the Panthers got there. We got there with a guy who had 5 games in which his QB rating was less than 36.8. Yeah, ideally you'd build around a franchise QB. But guess what? Teams that have that franchise QB do so because they were in position to draft him. Different story when you're trying to trade for one. And I'd love to see how we'd be able to fill all the holes we have with no first round picks the next two years.
