  1. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 12:07 AM) I have given Kenny my fair (and unfair) share of criticism, but one thing I have always done is defend his trades. This trade, however, would be absolutely indefensible. Care to elaborate? This should be good.
  2. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 12:01 AM) I don't like to go THIS FAR out onto a limb, especially when I am in a rational mood like tonight. However, if true and this is a 1 for 1 swap, this would be the Sox dumbest trade since I began following the team almost 15 years ago. I pray to God this isn't true. What a shock! I'm sure we could bump both Danks/Floyd trade threads and find at least 50 different posters saying the same thing.
  3. Count me as one in favor (if true) of this proposed deal. From every thing I've read, Homer clearly wasn't 100% last year. He's a sick talent. The #9 ranked prospect in all of baseball a short while ago. That doesn't fade away because of 75-80 innings.
  4. Wonderful news. I can't wait for the draft.
  5. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) It's different because like you said he didnt play a full season and showed a scary in-ability to hit RHP (.213/.284/.393). He's also not shown the ability to hit a good fastball yet. I don't think for a second management would be comfortable going with Fields at 3B next season which is probably why Betemit was acquired and are at least kicking the tires on Cantu. I realized in '07 Fields had his flaws. But he showed more than enough that season that he should be given the chance not only to prove 2008 was nothing more than an unfortunate injury-riddled year, but that he's also made the necessary adjustments to be a better all-around hitter. If Cantu is an upgrade, it'd be a minimal upgrade at best. Pass.
  6. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 01:20 AM) Just for no reason, imagining the potential of a Danks/Floyd/Buehrle/Gallardo/Bailey rotation makes me tingly... We'd pretty much be the envy of every team in baseball. That much sick/young/cheap talent in one rotation would be unheard of.
  7. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) The Mets' bullpen sucked outside of Wagner. That's an unfair comparison. Thornton, Linebrink, and Dotel are all better than anyone else the Mets had. Um, OK? It sucked a lot more without him. And it was the main reason the Mets choked again. You don't trade Bobby unless you have a chance to legitimately upgrade at another position, and you believe you have a suitable replacement/replacements to plug into the closer role.
  8. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 07:36 PM) Now there's an unbiased, rational opinion. I know he's got a Fields-like glove, but what's so terrible about the .277/.327/.481 line he posted last year? I'm not cuckoo for Cantu by any means, but I think we could do worse. He isn't Andy Gonzalez. Besides average, how is that really any different than what Fields did in 2007? In only 100 games. Cantu in no way makes us better. Much better off just sticking with Fields.
  9. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) Jenks has been very good for 3.5 years now. You're taking a huge gamble that a closer will continue that run. It's just not good business particularly when the closer is due a big raise and has experienced decreasing velocity. Since when did 3.5 years become the lifespan of an all-star caliber closer? Last time I checked Bobby wasn't 35. The decreasing velocity piece has been beaten to death. Seems like Bobby is the only pitcher in baseball that is required to throw 100 MPH to get guys out. 92 or 93 MPH and getting guys out just isn't sexy enough. Again, Bobby isn't untouchable. If you can get a good return for him I say go for it. But to say trade him because he might break down (when he's showed absolutely no signs of breaking down) or because his velocity is down (when he's more than proven he can get the job done without hitting triple digits) are not legitimate reasons. As far as the big raise goes, and? You don't trade guys just because you might have to eventually pay them.
  10. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 12:51 PM) Jenks 62 innings can be replaced. The thing that made him most valuable was he was one of the best bargains in the game, that's going to change. I'll be disappointed if he isn't moved. Thing is, other teams know the value of Jenks was in large part tied directly to his salary and if you're expecting a big haul in return for him I have no doubt you'll be disappointed. ONE of the things that make him valuable is his contract. Another thing that makes him valuable is, well, he's pretty f***in' good. I think it's ridiculous and naive to think that you can just easily replace him. Look at what happened to the Mets when Wagner went down. I'm not against trading anybody for the right package. But it better be a good one. If not, you simply don't trade him. Simple as that.
  11. The bold is my favorite part of the article. I'm sick of being good every 3-4 years. As much as I like Kenny, we've gone home without a playoff appearance 6 times in his 8 years here (and were damn fortunate to make it last year). I want to see sustained success. If we have a somewhat down year in 2009 (I don't think we will), I'll be content if from 2010 on we can put ourselves in a position to be a contender for a number of years. And I think that's exactly what we're doing. You don't have to have deep pockets to do this. The Twins have done it since 2001. I love what Kenny has done so far. I hope it continues.
  12. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 09:55 PM) Overall, a very lackluster haul, but I am so glad Vazquez is gone so I can't complain too much. Lillebridge still has some nice potential at a couple positions and offers some power and SPEED. I think he'll be on our team in some capacity next year barring another trade. The other guys are really low minors prospects and I never get excited over someone in A ball, though the players we did get have some potential and goodness knows our minor leagues needed a shot of that. The fact Kenny moved that turd earns this move a B- in my book. I also think Kenny isn't even close to being done...I believe he is going to essentially rebuild this team in one season giving it a new look Flowers alone makes this a good trade.
  13. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 09:54 PM) Hate...? What board are you posting on? He gives Eric Chavez a run for his money when it comes to most talked about opposing players. Why this board has terrible taste in players, I don't know. Yes, hate. Seems like whenever his name is mentioned somebody goes off about how awful he is or how he sucks or whatever. The dude is like 25. Damn.
  14. QUOTE (BearSox @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 09:44 PM) Please justify how he sucks. He put up stats good enough for a no. 4 or 5 guy, has the potential to be even better then that, has great stuff, is cheap, and the Rays want to move to make room for Price. What's not to like? I'm starting to think Jackson murdered somebody's pets or something. The hate is off the charts.
  15. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 09:33 PM) The ESPN News ticker says Jo Jo Reyes is involved. WTF?
  16. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 09:26 PM) tribune now reporting it is indeed Lillibridge, Flowers, Gilmore and Rodriguez. J4L is a happy camper. I can now stop hoping and praying that Francisco Hernandez finally breaks out before 2015. We've now got a legitimate catcher prospect.
  17. It's so nice to want to follow the farm again. 2006/2007 was REALLY rough. We've got a chance to really stock the system come June.
  18. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 08:13 PM) That would be insane, but then I would doubt Logan as the second player. I can't see how they'd be able to deal Thornton with Jenks available, but maybe Dotel or something? Anyway, that is a f***ing ton for Javy Vazquez. A f***ing TON. Something is fishy here. Too good to be true as far as I'm concerned. It's gonna be a long night/morning wondering who exactly we're getting.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 08:02 PM) I really like it. A strong farm system, and in so little time, who knew? We actually have bullets to make real trades now if we wanted. We still have holes to fill at the MLB level now obviously but it's only December. I might be in the minority here. But I'd like to see us develop our own talent (even if we didn't draft it). If you can land a true impact guy, fine. Other than that, develop them and bring 'em on up.
  20. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 07:39 PM) If they aren't as high on him as they once were, I'd try to take advantage of that and get as much more on top of Bailey as I could. Oh I agree. Just saying that I'd be more than satisfied if it were a 1 for 1 deal.
  21. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 07:20 PM) Not to sound totally cliche, but look what we did with Danks and Floyd. Bailey's potential is probably better than that of Danks and Floyd when we acquired them. Imagine how Bailey may respond under Ozzie/Coop rather than Dusty Baker... Check out some of my posts from earlier in this thread. I'd do Dye for Bailey straight up.
  22. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 06:36 PM) I have an unhealthy mancrush on Homer Bailey fwiw. You are not alone.
  23. QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 06:44 PM) guy at WSI said he heard chip caray on atlanta radio say taht it will be javy and logan for lillibridge flowers and morton... I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. That'd be a wonderful deal from our side. Sounds way too good to be true.
  24. QUOTE (KevinM @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 08:29 AM) I'd like it to rain pop tarts, but it's not happening. Taveras is not going to replicate his extremely lucky 2007 numbers when moving to a more difficult league. In fact, he won't replicate them in the NL. He's not very good. Well it has been officially settled now! Kevin says Taveras won't be able to duplicate his "extremely lucky" numbers in the much tougher al (when did the any player from the NL will struggle in the AL myth start anyway?). So let's holler at the Indians and see what they want for Sizemore! And thankfully KW, Ozzie and anybody else who actually matters couldn't give a damn about what you want. I want a naked Beyonce sitting in my lap right now. Not gonna happen because I want it.
  25. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 04:09 AM) I've been making this argument for 2 days now and I'm over it. Bottom line, we don't have a reliable CF or leadoff hitter right now and unless we sell the farm we're not going to end up with Ellsbury patrolling center this next season. Taveras is an experienced player, plays good D, can hit and steal bases, doesn't make a ton of money, can probably be had for some minor prospects and will hold things down until we see what Danks can do. He fills two needs for us and does so cheaply. You can't have world beaters at every position on the field. Do people really think that a 28 year old Jerry Owens is going to be our man next year? He's got 1/2 season in the majors and is almost 28, doesn't inspire much confidence in me. This is kinda my thinking. I'm far from crazy about Taveras, but what are the other options? He's better than anything we have right now. He's provides what Ozzie has wanted for years (Key words being what Ozzie wants. Not what a Soxtalker wants or feels is an acceptable leadoff man), and won't cost a s***load. All I would want for Willy to do is get on base at a .360 or better clip (his 2007 season would be more than acceptable to me). Everything else would take care of itself.
